This happened to me last night, actually, except that the usb mode DIDN'T recognize my sd card (although, it did recognize it when i took it out of my phone and used a microsd adapter). The fix for me, in case you anyone else has this problem, too, was simply to reboot into recovery and choose flash from sd card, forcing your phone now to recognize the card. I'm not sure why this worked, but after it correctly brought up all my files on my sd card, I rebooted and all was peachy again.
Note that normal resets didn't work for me. It only began working after rebooting into recovery mode and accesssing the sd card from there. Also note that nothing was wrong with the card...I checked my other microsd card and it didn't recognize that one either.

I followed the idiot-proof root guide—guess it's not so idiot-proof.
I got up to the point where I was installing the stock rooted ROM (33b. After everything is wiped, navigate to "install zip from sdcard," then select "choose zip from sdcard."). However, when I chose to install the zip with the ROM in it, the screen just flashed a quick message and dumped me back to the main ClockworkMod screen. Puzzled, I hit "reboot" to see if it had actually done anything.
It booted back into full Android, but now it's not recognizing my SD card, saying it needs to be formatted. When I try and format it, it does nothing. Now, recovery is also saying "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (Invalid argument)". My SD card reader won't recognize my card either to the point that I can't even format it using my Mac.
Help!
SD format tool can fix many sd card issues:

Same thing happened to me.
You got two problems. One which the phone is messing up, and the other which more than likely you.
1) Mine wanted to format too. When I clicked it, nothing.
What I did: Restarted my phone and tried to format again and VIOLA! worked perfectly fine. Then I was able to use it again.
2) The problem you're doing wrong is: when you are renaming the file on your computer to "update.zip" you're literally making it "update.zip", so the phone will read it as if it's "update.zip.zip". Try renaming it to JUST "update" and try again. If not, then the other way around.
Hope that helps.
1 - I've tried that several times, here's to trying it once more... :/
2 - Recovery mode won't even recognize the SD card, so that's not an issue until I get my SD card working. But since I was able to boot into update.zip once, I doubt that's the issue.
EDIT: Nope, won't format from within Android.

Trying a couple of other things that aren't working either:
Code:
mount -t fat32 /dev/block/mmcblk0 /sdcard
mount: No such device
I tried to force it:
Code:
echo /dev/block/mmcblk0 > /sys/devices/platform/usb_mass_storage/lun0/file
This made my computer recognize the SD card as an unformatted 32MB disk, which is obviously wrong.
So: should I get a new SD card or something?
Not going to help as the SD card isn't being recognized no matter what I do. Can't do anything with it.

try and get/install the OTA with the sd card fix. you don't need the card to do that, i don't think. then reboot. see if that fixes it.

Go check out the EVO 4G Android Development forum. There's a thread in there from someone who broke the SD & USB and almost bricked their device. It contains a fix for SD card issues.
Nope. OTA doesn't show up.

Well, it seems to be the SD card. Bought a new one and it all works perfectly.
android broke my micro sd card too!!! I didn't update my rom or anything. It just hangs and i need to reset by pulling out the battery. And this is what happens!
Blackberry and windows mobile are more friendly to memory cards.
So guys in a dilemma. I was on magnusragnarok cm7ex +4g build and then i got word that cm7rc1 was out. How i usually flash a new rom is download the zip file via pc, then connect the evo through usb, unmount sdcard, drag and copy zip to my sdcard and then mount sdcard, go into recovery flash zip and reboot. Well when I go to connect the usb to the pc and then unmount my phone says the sd card is damaged and to reformat it. The only option i have is to format and erase everything from my sdcard. I did that and tried unmounting again. Same **** happened. Ive tried searching anything to reformat a "damaged" sd card. Does anyone have an exact link to a step by step process? Im not even sure if its the rom itself thta may have a bug.

Connect to computer, go to my computer. Right click your phones storage device and reformat.
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
If the card itself is damaged, there is no saving it.
When i go to rom manager and press flash CWM recovery it does nothing, not even ask for SU. is anyone else having this issue?
Same issue here... I even tried a factory reset and it still won't flash CWM! Anyone out there have a good idea?
FWIW, on the Play Store reviews for CWM, it seems like we're not the only ones suddenly having issues flashing CWM recovery...
Just a simple question...I'm guessing it's a dumb question and all...but I have to ask...you are rooted right?
Second question...you aren't trying to install cwm touch right? you are choosing the very top option correct?
Yep, I'm rooted and I'm trying to select the top option.
I guess Koush's server is down or something.
possible...
Same problem here, sbfed 3 times and was panicking over this issue, thought it was the app's fault only just recently did I realize it might just be the servers and find this thread.
Add me to the list of ROM Manager not flashing.
Couldn't have happened at a worse possible time, now that CM9 daily is out!!

They must've of fixed the issue! I was just able to flash the recovery and I'm installing CM9 now! Wooo!
I am having the issue where CWM cannot see my sdcard. I am seeing hints of this on this and other boards, but no clear solution.
I have formatted my card multiple times, either thru phone, in CWM (which seems to do nothing) or in windows.
This is some kinda sick joke... CM9 is out and I cannot flash it.

when you choose install from zip, there are two options: "choose zip from SD card" and "choose zip from internal SD card"
Try both and see if you see your files.
Thanks for response!
Ok I do not see the "install from internal sd " option, am I missing something.
I have ROM Manager, CWM 5.8.2.0. In Rom manager I have install from SD Card, but when I use that I get "Sd Card Marker not found" error when it reboots into CWM.
In CWM it I choose "Install zip from SD Card", I pick "chosse zip from" and it immedicately says "no files found" doesnt even show directory structure.
Should I get paid version of Rom Manager... is that what I am missing?

Try formatting your SD card in your laptop with the adapter and do it as Fat 32. I think people have had similar issues.
I did get it working. I had a 16GB card in my HD2, I pulled that and it worked without a hitch.
I did do a full format with card reader on my old card. They are both 16GB Class 2 so I will probably keep this one.
Thanks for replies... and CM9 is pretty schweet! I havent hit any significant hiccups.
Glad you got up and running. Seems these stock Sd cards are flaky.

If anyone else is having this problem, try using the official SD formatter tool here instead of Windows to format the card: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/
I think there is some small quirk in the way the SD cards are originally formatted that is making them unreadable by the touch CWM. And using Windows to reformat them doesn't seem to fix it. This formatter tool has revived an SD card I messed up before that nothing else could fix, so if anything can fix the problem, this thing can. Worth a shot before switching the SD card out.
16GB card
Guys
very new to this, first rooting, I struggled with my 16GB SD card (SD card marker not found, file not found, etc). Then I tried with another 1GB SD card and it worked perfectly.
Just another idea.
Thanks for all good posts and ideas from this forum!
Ok, I really messed up. the phone was almost bricked, but I finely managed to
get back to Clockwork Recovery.
Now I want to restore my backup or update the rom again, but it says:
No files found.
it seems that the SD card is formatted or unreachable.
What can I do? Any ideas?
It's easy to send your favorite Rom to SD
go to CWM --->Advanced ---> mount USB when screen changed connect your device to PC and then your SD card will appear on monitor now you can put Rom on SD and after flashing the boot.img install rom using CWM.

I've tried that just now,
it says: "unable to open ums file"
when I click it.
Edit: ok I updated the recovery
and now the mounting works!
Downloading the new ROM now, wish me luck!
Hello all, I recently purchased a new GS4 tmobile variant and have rooted it via Odin. SU shows up in the app section and TWRP installed successfully. My problem is when I attempt to flash a new rom i.e. GE 4.3, I almost immediately get a FAILED message and cant get it installed. I created a backup and have been able to restore so its not been an issue however I really cant figure out where im going wrong. The zip file is on my SD card but no luck... I'm just looking for some direction,
Thanks Andrew

if you installed the rom correctly to the sd card, using twrp, you should be able to do your wipe data factory reset, wipe cash and dalvik, then press install from sd card, choose zip from sd card and install. make sure the rom is on the root of the sd card. when i first started flashing i was having a issue because my device was mounted incorrectly and the rom was not going to the root of my sd card. i started using a card reader that i can mount as a disk drive and send the rom to that. that solved my issues. also i seemed to be having issues with twrp on my device so i started using it and installed clockwork mod touch recovery and things started working then. Also be sure you are trying to install the correct rom for your device variant.i hope this helps some. good luck

The .zip file is in a folder called ROMS i created on the root of the internal memory. Right now im stuck without anything as my backup seems to have failed now as well. I've flashed many roms before and have never run into this so im stumped! I've tried using both CWM and TWRP but both through a "failed" error. I downloaded both the rom package from the Tmo variant GS4 forum so i think they should be right...

I think ive found your issue. You said you placed the roms in a folder, try this, put the rom DIRECTLY on the root of your sd card, NOT in a folder. Give this a try and let me know. I know when flashing with my last device, the rom could not be placed into a folder, it had to be placed directly onto the root of the sd card. So try going back to the computer and mount as disk drive and directly place the rom onto the sd card, then just scroll down to find the rom while in recovery and this SHOULD work. I had a issue mounting as a disk drive so I just used a micro sd card reader and placed my sd card into the card reader, this automatically is recognized as a external disk drive and I'm able to place rom directly to root of sd card this way. When I tried hooking up my device directly to the computer it mounted as a media device and would not allow the rom to be placed correctly on the root. So that's how I got around that. So keeping these issues in mind, try again and place the rom directly to the sd and NOT in a folder and see if your able to successfully flash after that. After I did these things I was able to flash without any problems. Luke I said when I first flashed these were some issues I encountered that was prohibiting me from flashing correctly. Now I don't have any problems flashing. Please let me know if this works out and enables you to successfully flash. Hope this helps
