Micro SDHC Classes - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I need someone's advise here. is class 4 has a big difference with class 6 using app2sd? because here in our country (PHL), i can't find class 6. i found some but i'm afraid that its fake. I'm planning rather to use class 4.
anyone using class 4 for app2sd on coolexe rom? Thanks!

Minimal difference between class 6 and 4 - maybe faster file transfer to the card from the PC. I used a 8GB class4 before I got a 16GB class 6 with Insertcoin (froyo), but did not notice any significant change. By the way, if you get a good brand class 4 it can perform as a cheaper class 6.

Thanks for the quick response. I'm thinking of Kingston vs Sandisk on same class 4. Which brand is better?

They are both good. Buy the one which is cheaper.
And don't say thanks, use the button.

got it. i wish i can push it 100x to you.

I'm using a Kingston class 4 at the moment and I can't fault it
Swyped from my CM7.1 Desire using XDA Premium App

Card's class doesn't relate to sequential read and write speeds which are crucial for a2sd and data2sd scripts. Therefore, it could happen that you have a class 4 card which could outperform higher class card in terms of performance.

how about moving dalvik cache to sd-ext? what can you advice? will these class 4 or 6 speed will vary? please help. thanks!

It is always better to have dalvik on nand as it seems to be more consistent regarding what I already wrote. Nand is equal to about class 5 or 6, but that means only when you are transferring large files. If you have a2sd+ script, dalvik is already on sd-ext.

how about on cool3d sense 3.0? i think the dalvik stays on the nand. but the apk is on sd-ext. and it has a zip add-on to move dalvik cache to sd. am i right? i'm not so sure.

On the Cool3D sense 3.0 rom standard the dalvik stays indeed on the nand, but you can flash the zip file at the bottom to move it to the sd-ext. The performance afterwards stays more or less the same.

can't wait to try to move dalvik cache to sd-ext. i have class 2 microsd right now but i'm planning to buy a higher microsd. but i will try it before having the class4 or 6 sd card just to see the differences of the microsd class.
do you think this will have a slower effect?

ok so i bought a kingston class 4 and in sd tools it says the cards name is sd16g something and im getting 3.6mb/s write and 17.5mb/s read. is this normal?

i'm getting 5.+ mb/s on write and 13.+mb/s on read with class 2 sd card. try CrystalDiskMark to test your sd card.

still getting these values. is this normal or this sd may be fake?

maybe it's not. just like what they said in the first page. some class 4 performs better than class 6. maybe my class 2 performs better than the other class 4. try to see the speedtest by using crystaldiskmark. maybe that's better than sd tools.

[Q] SD card speed

I have been trying some roms over the last few days and experience quite a big difference in speed. Some roms lag quite a bit, especially when opening sense apps.
My question is, does this depend on the speed of the SD card? I have a class 2 now (ordered a class 10 though). Are sense apps run from the SD card or the NAND?
Yes, it depends on the speed of the SD card, as in case of custom ROMs, all the apps are usually stored on the external partition. Plus at least a class 6 card is suggested in order to avoid the lags.

I wouldn't buy a class 10 SD card for use with the Desire. Not all class 10 cards work, you best bet is class 6.

Is sense also stored on the SD card in case of custom roms? Or just the apps?

Well, ok, the class 10 has been delivered today, so I'll check it out tonight.
What kind of problems could a class 10 have in the desire? Not working at all?
Class 10 works ok as long as they are a respectable brand. Also you may want to consider installing SD Booster from market to increase deafult cache size to 1024kb or 2048kb

Performance problems, the cards not doing there proper write and read speed. Let us know how you get on with new card please
Have tried the new card. It's a Transcend 16GB Class 10. Getting about 18Mb/s sequential reads and writes in windows.
Have benched it in stock froyo on my desire with SD Tools: 14,5 MB/s write and about 8 MB/s read. Strange that the read speeds are lower. Then again, it seems that there are no reliable SD speed benchmarks on Android..

[Q] microSD class 10

Hello,
I tried to use app2sd and move the cache, dalvick cache and all application data to the microSD class 2 but my phone got very slow response and I had to wait about 8 seconds for each application to open after I click it's icon.
I want to know if I bought microSD class 10 and then try to use app2sd will I still experience the slow response or will it be fast enough so that I don't find a difference between the internal memory and the class 10 microSD?
differences between class 2 and class 10 is huge, but for app2sd class 4 or 6 is highly enough,
i use class kingston class 10 + cm7r2 hboot tried many roms and no problem at all
so if you buy a class 6 or class 10 you wil be satisfied very well

Card class indicates minimum sequential write speed achievable on the card.
It's good for writing big files like movie files.
But when it comes to writing small random files, it can be the opposite. Many people reported having bad random write speeds with C10 cards whereas others reported better speeds with lower class cards.
It's a matter of sd controler quality and size of erase block size. Bigger and faster SD cards have bigger erase block sizes (up to 256Ko). It means that those cards need to write 256Ko of data even for writing a single byte on the card.
That's why C10 are not the best choice when it comes to DATA2SD or any kind of similar solution to short data storage on the Desire.

about 8 seconds for each application to open? u have some serious problems...that is not normal....wipe all partitions form recovery, re-format/re-partition the sd card and install the rom again..even with a class 2 every app should open instantanly, not in some seconds..
in addition avoid the stock "move to sd", leave all the apps in the internal memory/sd-ext, but don't use move to sd, as it sometimes that get the phone slow..better only use app2sd

also the speed depend on the kernel i guess, as i said with my class 10 no problem on any rom, just suprb speed, buy class 6 then instead of class 10 and do some reasearch your move
I have no issues with stock class 2 card, so something has to be badly broken with his device. I am merely pointing that class 10 obviously is not obligatory gadget for dalvik cache to work properly - if we assume it is responsible for poor performance.
I would strongly advise against buying a class 10 for the Desire. I bought one thinking it would be faster as did a friend of mine. My friends class 10 refuses to work point blank with either his or my phone, my class 10 works but it's very unreliable and I'm seeing some very low Quadrant scores. When I say unreliable, I have a 1Gb ext partition on it that seems not to work properly and I also had a Nandroid backup restore fail as the MD5 checksum failed. I'm getting a class 4 16Gb off Ebay now.
how can i check what class is my sd card ?
without opening the phone if it is possible
and what is the preffered class for data2ext ?
I also got a Class 10 and I am running InsertCoin 1.1.1 with CM7r2, no issues at all regarding speed. Whereas the speedtest shows that I do not reach full speed for the class 10 (just around 6MB/s write speed, with version 1.1.0 I had 8-9MB/s).

SD card confusion!

After lots of searching and reading can anyone help with SD card choice? Why is it such a problem for this phone? Is there different hardware in the phone or is it the way the ROM or Kernel addresses the card that seems to cause so much trouble?
For every card that is recommended you can find somebody who has had issues with same card so do I need to find out about the hardware in phone or stick to ROM or kernel threads for best card for me?
Have tried 3 cards so far and the lowest spec one was the best!! I know there are lots of reported problems with class 10 cards but also lots say their phones perform great with them but I found the class 10 PNY 8GB card the slowest I've used and a class 4 8GB sandisk the fastest with a class 6 8GB samsung nearly as fast but still cannot work out why there is so much trouble with SD cards
Ive been using a class 6 A-DATA sd card for quite a while now and I must say, I'm impressed with its speed. Its great for A2SD and SD ext. I tried sebastiaans rom, and it runs pretty smooth on this card, WAY better than on my class 2 samsung sd card.
In the end its just a matter of taste, some say Samsung is better, some say A-DATA is and others Kingston. Ive read that a class 10 card is a bit of overkill for the usage and that a lot of them arent as fast as they claim to be. I'd say class 6 will do just fine! The brand does not matter, stick with the big names tho . Kingston, A-DATA and Samsung seem to be bought the most!
Thanks but still want to know why, what is the limitation...the phone hardware or rom/kernel? I'm on seb15 AIO5.0.2 now with cm7 r2 hboot and the class 6 samsung 8GB in much faster than the class 10 PNY 8GB so not getting any lag now but seems no different to the class 4 sandisk that i replaced due to card errors but that was on standard HBoot.
Have just ordered a sandisk ultra 16GB card for extra space so hope it is as good or better and it was a bargin http://www.play.com/Mobiles/Mobile/...-Micro-SD-HC-Memory-Card-Class-6/Product.html
but what is the fastest read and write speed you can expect from the hardware? I use antutu now to check speed.

I have tried 2 of those 16gb ultra mobile dual color cards and I had a lot of frezes, with AIO 5.0.1SE rom, CM7r2 Hboot. So I had to go back to my lexar 16gb class6.
Hhmmmm like i said for every good report on a card there is a bad one, have read a few good reports on this card and the original class 4 sandisk card has been the best i've used so far so thought would give it a try...hope I'm lucky with it!!
It should arrive today or tomorrow so will repoet what i find
Well the sandisk 16gb ultra mobile has turned up and been running it for a few days now with no problems, ROM is running smooth with no freezes so far.
Using antutu to bench mark it and it appears to be slightly faster than the class 6 samsung 8GB it replaced, alot quicker than the class 10 PNY but still slower than the old class 4 sandisk 8GB!
ROM runs sloothly and I have enough space for now so will stick with it.
Yep... ultra mobile is the best card that I ever use till now.

Thanks to let us know, but can you tell me what rom are you using with it? are you still using Seb rom? CM7r2 or Stock hboot? Thanks
Seb rom still, version 5.1AIO and cm7 r2 hboot

We recommend a Class 6 Transcend for any kind of data swapping like data2sd, or data2ext, on the basis of maximum positive feedback. A class 10 is more often overkill and most brands are incompatible with the Desire, while a Class 2 might be underpowered (in terms of speed).
Personally tested cards with data2sd:
Class 2 Kingston-Ok
Class 6 Transcend 4GB-Great
Class 6 SanDisk 16GB-Lags
Class 6 Samsung 16GB-Great
Class 4 3CPro 16GB-Great
Class 10 Transcend 16 GB-lags
The polls section of supernova.droidzone.in has some polls regarding speed of card with my roms.
..and you can't get a more useful response than that!

What Class SD Card is best for SPEED/SMOOTHNESS for DATA 2 SD CARD SETUP ROMS

Also, whats an easy way to find out what Class your SD card is?
It is written in on the card itself.
Why two threads? This is not a news group.

The higher the class, the faster the card, max = class 10.
Class 6 card should be fine for speed and will cost less than a class 10 card which is only needed for speed freaks.

Just look on your card! On my Sandisk 16GB microSD there is an open circle with a number (4), this number is the speed-class!
Recommended for the Desire is Class 4 or 6, Class 10 seems to be incompatible with Desires Hardware and produces lags!
Regards,
Guido
I use a 16 GB Trancend class 6 and it works perfectly. My 6 GB class 6 card was way faster though.
By the way, the method of A2SD used is also very important. SenseEvolution was a lot slower on my HTC desire than Mildwild and both use A2SD, though in a different manner.
I'd recommend a Transcend Class 6 for Data2SD
Im currently using Marange's MIUI V4 rom latest version 2.5.18
my set up LX2X
Shaky's kernel,
wake min 245000 max 111300 lagfree governor
sleep min 245000 max 460000 smartass v2 governor
the rom is really fast and pretty darn stable but every time i open an app that downloads alot of data or is larger i have to wait from 5-15seconds for the menus to pop up, its basically just waiting at black or white screen, i believe this to be because of my sd card but im not sure... alot of apps are normal but some like facebook is the worst and whats app takes about 5-8seconds to open up fully aswel...
is there anything i can do ? i have a 16gb sd card
I have testet with benchmark and found, that the class 10 card has no more speed as the class 4 card. So what, i use the low budget but high capacity class 4 card 32 gb.
Thanks for your observations which are probably useful to someone interested in those kind of roms, but when you say something is...

Because sdcard and it's class is only one part of the coin. You have random i/o and phones memory controller. Any of the links in chain not working as expected (to be taken relatively as Desire was not intended to use >class6) and you'll get crappy speeds.

Even class2 runs fine for me and it is faster than the specification since it does anywhere betweeen 3-5mg/sec instead of only two.
Its an original sandisk

3micro sd class 4 vs 10

Planning on getting either a 32gb or 64gb depending on the price.I planned on using app2sd mod to use the micro sd as my main storage instead of the 16gb internal storage. And the micro sd card has to be in FAT32 or EXTFAT format.
1.What the real big difference between class 4 and 10? Beside the price? Is class 10 speed much noticeable or just a minor improvement from class 4?
2.Since i plan on using this as my main storage. Will opening app/games, playing music, viewing video/picture and saving picture on a class 10 be a lot faster than class 4? Also how about coping the files from pc to sd card? Any difference?
3.What brand would you recommend? Is there a difference between a sandisk class 10 and lexar class 10 beside the price?
4.What format do micro sd card come in? If it not FAT32 or EXTFAT, can i change it to FAT32 or EXTFAT?
1. Speed. Class 10 has much faster r/w speeds.
2. Not sure how big a difference itll be. Read speeds should be good enough on either for apps. Its hd video and such that will require higher write speeds though.
3. Dont much care for sandisk oersonally. But I think theyre the only ones offering 64gb. Never tried lexar but Samsung memory has always been the best for me. Jus make sure you trust the seller.
4. FAT32, for most. ExFAT for 64gb. Yes you can reformat.
