[Q] LED notifications - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

Having come from Windows Mobile, Blackberry, Android phone I really miss not having an LED notification for new emails and SMS messages. I have an HTC 7 Pro (unlocked with 7720) and it has an LED which flashes when charging, when I miss a phone call, and if the battery is low. Does anyone know how to enable it to flash for new messages or when in signal (like a BB does)?
Thanks.

If this is even possible, it would require the following:
1) Native code to access the LED (theoretically possible but not done yet).
2) Native code to access the email/SMS database (same caveat).
3) Running the app in the background (possible, but impacts the whole system).
Alternatively, there may be a way to control this from the registry, if the phon'es firmware supports it directly. That simply requires finding the relevant registry keys (should be possible, if they exist) and modifying them (possible on HTC, Samsung, LG).

easier to use rom for youngsters and oldies

Question to all devs, android and winmo alike:
would it be possible to create a rom for a davice with a large (3"+) touchscreen that gives the option of calling only a few preprogrammed numbers and receive incoming calls from only a few programmed numbers?
also, restrict access to all the advanced features like web browsing etc?
something that will respond to an sms from a certain number with a certain content by performing an action? like silent callback or sending gps fix?
this would be for a child.
as for older users, a large number keypad on the touchscreen with a list of contacts? displaying none of the more advanced info that would scare an older luddite using it?
think jitterbug phone, just better.
I would love to be able to get my 6 year old son and an old friend of the family a phone that is tailored exactly to their needs without having to go for some ridiculously xpensive scheme lie jitterbug.

Why do you need a child carry a WM or an Android device? You may "restrict" the access to a browser simply by not including a browser in a rom. Let's disable in registry installing new programs by running a .cab and the problem is solved?
You may have a look at Spb Kiosk too.
Dunno how to restrict numbers, you may try a Call filtering app, put some white-listed numbers there and exclude the program from the start menu. Or just don't include the shortcut into rom. No idea how to restrict outgoing calls.
I saw a phone creeper app that can track you down the smses that the phone receives, so I think that's worth a try too.
I hope I explained a little.
it seems to me like it would be easiest to create a solution for ease of use and in the case of the youth version restrictability by customizing a smartphone versus trying to customize a featurephone.
the old age version is basically intended to be something as easy and intuitive to use as an old bakelite phone.

[Q] Find Phone via WiFi? (e.g. turn Ringer on, Vibrate)

I'm trying to find an app which runs a server or something on the phone and is able to turn on the ringer.
I keep loosing my phone in my house and it takes me ages to find it again. Even calling myself doesn't work since sometimes the phone is in silent mode without vibration.
Is there an app on the market which remotely turns on the ringer (even the phone was in silent mode) and has a simple web interface? Lets say my phone is connected to Wifi or 3G, I type in the IP Adress of my phone in an internet explorer and click on "locate" or something
Thanks
Tasker can handle something like that. It's an amazing program, so worth the $5 (or $6 from the market), but you can download a 7 day trial from the website:
http://tasker.dinglisch.net/
You should be able to set up a task to turn on the ringer (or to play a song or tone or whatever) when a particular text string is sent to the phone. Or, presuming you have a landline, you can turn the ringer on when you call just from that line. Lots of ways to do it.
Have a look on the market for
Wheres my droid
A simple text can set off the ringer, enable gps and txt you location etc...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
tasker sounds interesting, does it need root?
Wheres my Droid is exactly what I'm looking for, but it would be great if I could activate it by mail and not by phone only (cant send mails to a phone number in germany)
Tasker doesn't require root, I don't think there's anything it does that would require it (could be wrong, I do have root, but it's not listed as a requirement). I don't think it handles emails, though, either. But I'd say you can call it and use Tasker to handle the call from a specific number. I checked and nothing else comes to mind as a way to find it, but it's worth testing out if you think you can use Tasker for other things (I have alarms, various profile changes, app events, headphone plugins, etc) - with some work, it does replace several programs I was using. Haven't lost my phone, though
On the tasker website, it lists "Email (K9)" as a compatible event - does that mean emails through the Gmail App will work as well?
sorry to bring up an old thread, but is there an app that works stictly on WiFi only? I have an Android phone with no service and I would like a Find my phone app usable on WiFi

Auto read-receipt?

So turns out my phone is sending read receipts for incoming mail (via exchange).
I can't seem to find a setting for this. I NEED to turn this off...
One of the main purposes of having a phone for e-mail is to make sure I get important stuff ASAP, and leave non-important stuff for later.
Are auto-read receipts enabled standard on WP7?
bumpidy bump bump
I don't think there's a way to enable or disable these. Check your Exchange settings (maybe via PC) and see if there's something set up there. It won't be on the phone side of things though.
On the older Windows Mobile phones, you would control the setting on the device.
Now on the new Windows Phone 7, as soon as you read the message on the phone, it sends a receipt. This is SUCH a bad thing for me... lol

[Q] Internet connection popups

Hello
I have HTC Touch Pro2 rhodium with Windows. I have some applications frequently connecting to internet, e. g. email, weather etc. Now problem is, that I traveled abroad, where I don't have data tarif. So I disabled internet connection, but all apps are still trying to connect. As result, approximately every minute phone beep with popup screen "cannot connect" and backlite is turned on.
This behaviour
a) reduces batery life to less than eight hours from previous 1-2 days due to active backlite.
b) is making normal work with phone quite annoying as I must every moment click on some popup.
So my question is. Is it possible to somehow supress this popup?
(I don't want to hear advices about disabling automatic connecting in every single app
Thank you
No way the question could be answered comprehensively not knowing all your apps, but at least for the generic ones like Weather, Location, etc., as you noted there are check boxes that can disable the attempt-to-connect if you are in roaming state. If you don't want to do this manually, it would not be that hard to build a .REG file that includes the settings to turn this off, and either import the reg file into a reg editor or convert the reg file to a cab file you can just click on and run. In the past I have found those reg file settings documented in these forums if you want to go that route.

[Q] Apps starting up or accessing wifi/net without your permission

Hi Guys,
Let me start by saying this is my first Android phone, and I'm loving it. I do have some questions I can't seem to find solutions for.
Some apps don't seem to offer you the option to select/unselect run on startup. I'll check under settings>apps>running and won't see them listed, yet if I say shake the phone(way to activate app) it starts up. So is the app running or not? I'm basically looking for the windows msconfig version on the GN. A way to know for certain that apps aren't running if you don't start them up yourself.
Secondly, on my previous old nokia, when I opened an app (or anything wanting to go out) it would prompt me for permission to access the net. I would like to be able to control via user intervention access to the net. Like the old zonealarm for pc's.
And lastly, it would seem they have overlooked some of the fundamentals of mobile/cell phones. I loved the options to set ascending and descending or beep once ring tones, to stop push services at night so you're not receiving updates at 3am, to stop all none essential services by default if your battery hits x%, and many more basic yet what I would say essential services for a phone. I know that some apps cover some of these things. I've found an app to turn of volume after X time, but really... this should be core services built into ICS imho.
Cheers in advance,
Droid wall lets you decide what apps get internet access if you are rooted.
Autostarts will let you see what conditions an app starts under and disable the app from starting if that condition is met (if you so choose).
