Verizon Forced Update ?? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

So verizon forces this update to my phone. Not sure what it was, but it didn't give me an option to cancel, or defer. Now when my phone tries to boot, I get the little android error screen with the triangle and exclamation point, and the phone will not boot. I have already booted into recovery, and wiped everything with no luck at all. Did a full wipe and restore, which had it up and running again, but this morning, same thing. Triangle and exclamation point error screen from where the update was unsuccessful. What do I need to do to block this update so I don't have to do a restore every few hours? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Anthony

Same crap happened to my wife's phone yesterday, she is running Skyraider and VZW keep trying to forced update and fux0r the rom, had to wiped cache/dalvik, reload the rom on top of it so she can retain her data, as soon as I loaded up the phone I turned off the wifi, 3G, and auto sync then immediately performed the following steps to stop that ****.
otacerts.zip (rename it .bak or whatever)
com.smithmicro.dm (freeze it with titanium backup)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...ing+OTA&page=2

I don't have the "donate" version of backup, so I can't freeze the stuff. If I unroot, I assume it will fix the problems.

Here's what I did after accepting the update:
I am rooted (stock rom) and accepted the OTA, after the install the phone will not boot completely it will fail with a white triangle, yellow exclamation point and blue android. To get the phone working again pull the battery, re-insert after a bit and boot into hboot, go to recovery and clear cache partition, this will put the phone back into service. I didn't wipe the davlik.
I got another forced OTA d/l yesterday and had to redo the above. I have renamed the otacerts.zip to .bak and I am anxiously waiting what happens the next time the OTA tries to d/l.

there are 2 otacerts.zip files:
etc/security
system/etc/security
which one needs to be renamed?
thanks.

I used AntTek App Manager (free in the Market) to freeze it.

You are kidding right? The one app that just about everyone should have (and support the developer so he can continue to provide support to us) and you resort to Warez?
Lame.
And to the OP - once you have secured the donate version of TiBu you can freeze the com.smithmicro.dm file like stated before.

I paid for mine and many other apps, and I have donated to devs who gave us root. As you said Titanium Backup is one of those must have apps that we all should buy, but don't be so arrogant to assume everybody has the extra cash to pay for the apps.

If you have paid $100~300 for a smartphone and pays $30 a month, I think you can pay $6. If you can't pay for one time deal, why would you have a smartphone that costs you $30+ a month? Promoting warez site is against the XDA rule and no respect to developers

Maybe I was a bit harsh - and I am sorry for calling you out.
Its just that I would find it hard to believe that the OP couldnt afford a 6 dollar app after paying a couple hundred bucks for the phone and about 70 to 100 a month for service.
Its like buying a luxury car but not being able to pay for the maintainence and upkeep.

I proudly pay what little money I can to developers.
If I "Try" an app and plan to use it, then I pay for it.
I try to show some form of dignity to people that follow my lead..
An option would be to unroot and do what vomitrizen wants you to do.
If you can't afford to support the development community you should not be here.
And to crazyfireman, the same file is showing in two paths only because there second folder containing actual file.
Change either one and youwill be good.

Don't apologize. Anyone posting or recommending warez here puts the community in jeopardy. It doesn't matter how many "other" apps one has paid for, that entitles you to NOTHING extra; one theft is still theft. Posting advice on how to commit piracy is a potential liability to the site itself. Mod notified.

Having the same problem, but HBOOT is behaving strangely: it is not allowing me to use up or down arrows to go through the menu. It immediately asks "Do you want to start update?" and then allows me to select yes or no with volume up or down. It then prompts me to reboot, at which time I'm back to the same routine: Phone shuts off after about 20 seconds, ends up with exclamation point inside white triangle with green android guy.
Phone is not recognized by windows despite updating drivers so no luck with adb.
Any ideas?

You have a file in your SD card names PG32IMG.zip. so it sees it, and needs to "update"

I am having this same issue. From what I gather in reading this thread, I first need to clear my phone’s cache, then rename 1 file, and freeze another. I have a few questions about that I hope someone is willing to answer for me.
First, to the best of your knowledge are the steps I described above correct?
Second, before I clear my cache I want to verify that I’m doing it properly:
What I think I should do it boot in Revolutionary Clockwork Mod and then select “wipe cache partition”. Is that correct?
Lastly, I don’t have Titanium backup or AntTek App Manager installed on my phone. I can probably track down the apk on the net somewhere but how do I install it without being able to get past CWM? Can I just move the apk into the system/app directory?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can help shed some light on these questions for me.

That's my problem. HBOOT and Clockwork Mod seem to be working fine for me.
Also, I have no problem paying $6 for the app but right now I cannot use my phone so I cannot install anything from the market. If I can track down the apk (which I have been unsuccessful at doing so far) I can move it onto my phone and into the system/app directory through the adb shell.
So, do you have any thoughts on my original questions? Thanks!

Last night it tried to push this update when I was sleeping, but I didn't have enough battery life for it to do it (thankfully). Anyways, I deferred the update for 5 days, and have frozen the file someone mentioned to freeze; however, I cannot find this otacerts.zip on my phone anywhere. Any ideas?

Labor day drunkness made me mess up my Evo

I rooted the other day and am running CM6 on my Evo. I don't much like ADW launcher, so I installed Launcher Pro. Every time I reboot my phone it defaults back to ADW. So today, I decided to buy Root Explorer and delete the APK for ADW in my system/apps folder, along with a couple other apps that I don't use. Without doing much research (drinking), I proceeded to delete some APKs. My phone will now not boot. It is stuck on the boot animation (which is beautiful).
Does anyone have a suggestion as to how I can fix this issue? I promise to never delete anything again, and stop drinking.
Thanks!

Yeah hold the volume down +power button while the phone is off till you get to the white screen and select recovery.
reflash from there.

well what you should have done is:
1. don't delete something if you don't know what it is
2. simply go to menu>settings>apps>manage apps>adw launcher and hit clear defaults
now to fix it... boot into recover wipe everything and re-flash
HAHA yes thank you. I forgot about my nandroid. Extended memory loss is one of the greatest side effects.
So do you know the proper way to remove apps using root explorer? Or will CM6 trip out if I touch any of its preloaded apps? Thanks for the help

I understand this. I did read to delete the apk in the system/apps folder on multiple articles. It's a completely legit way to remove apps according to many people.
And of course I tried to clear ADW's defaults, if that worked I wouldn't be trying to delete it. It starts whenever it wants to despite me telling it not to.

I want to delete some of the stock apps but I can't figure out how it keeps telling me that it cannot be deleted .I downloaded titanium backup and tried deleting with that n ended up having to take my battery out of my phone after 5 minutes of an exclamation triangle and android
Well deleting them should have worked. And can you get into recovery?
I would unroot and figure out how to root and everything involved with rooting. Then, I would flash a ROM that has the sprint bloat out of it.
Also, there is a list of "safe to remove" apps out on this site somewhere. You may want to find it and keep a hold of it.
With Titanium, just freeze the app, you don't have to uninstall it
then drink
Havent tried to get to recovery. I was told I could delete them with titanium backup??

Why would u pay someone to root ur phone bro. Its so easy. That Guy ripped u off and u should get ur money back. Plus sounds like he did it wrong.
I just wasn't comfortable doing it myself, I paid $20.00 and that's not even a month of free wireless teather so that's ok. I just want to delete NASCAR and Facebook and a few others.
If I where u I would just install another sense rom cause that have more features and faster

First id check and make sure your phone is actually rooted.
Secondly I'd consider a sense Rom like mikfroyo or myns. My setup is in my sig. Mikfroyo has the bloat removed but also includes the apks if u want any of it back.
Last bit of advise...read about rooting, flashing, roms, kernels, etc. All the info is here. If your tech savy at all ill be doing it all urself with ease. If your not tech savy then either don't root or pay someone who knows how to do it right

if you do indeed have root, just download system app remover from the market. Be careful of removing apps that seem like they wouldn't be needed, you could mess your stuff up.
OP, sounds like you got ripped off, and paid someone $20 to do jack squat to your phone.
Download root checker from the market, it'll verify that you're rooted and have busybox installed. If you don't have busybox, I'm pretty sure you can get it through titanium backup or through the busybox app in the market. If you download busybox from the market, you still need to launch it - it's a busybox installer - and follow the prompts in the app.

Ok I downloaded un installer for root from the market and it has allowed me to delete. Chuck Boris was on on my titanium backup but I only had the free version maybe that's why it wouldn't work?
Arnezie,
shoot me a Private msg with your email and ill email u
Delete if you must, but there are risks with synching after doing so. Many of those apps you might find undesirable are integrated into Sense.
You would probably find backing your rooted stock ROM and then flashing a custom ROM that you like a safer choice.

Currently 35% downloaded. Is there any way to cancel the install phase? I was not prompted and cannot stop the download. I hope others aren't next, I tried various tricks when I first rooted to break my communication with the OTA update but obviously that didn't work.

Probably too late now 20 minutes later, but you could always pull the battery. That will buy you a little time. Then you could fastboot boot the recovery from the dev forum, access your phone with adb, and delete the update application apks from the system.
Quick uodate, I was able to postpone the update with the remind me later option I was given. Luckily it asked me at some point but my issue is still there, how do I get rid of this uodate pest? Renamint the ota-certs.zip file isn't enough because I did that a while ago.
I will try that when I get home. Is this system updates apk something I can get to from root explorer? I would love to end while I'm still at work.
Thanks Mills! I used Titanium backup to back the system-update.apk to my SD and then removed it from internal. The option to update disappeared in Settings. I out it back just to make sure I fixed it, the update option reappeared so I removed it again and now it's over. Thanks so much for helping me in the clutch. Felt like my phone had a bomb strapped to it. Oh and in Titanium I deleted the app data just to be safe and remove that update. Hopefully this info gets around so no one else is surprised.

Looks like I was wrong, the phone updated while I was busy at work and is now not turning on. With my lady at home expecting anytime I was in a catch 22, do I turn the phone off and try and help it's safety or do I do what apears to have worked. Well I had faith in what I did and now have to revert back to a crapberry. Understanding more after root

So i have read many post and i mean many and i am still working my brain on catching on to all these. If you all notice, there is a lot to rooting, what you can do, names to things, so so much my brain hurts lol.
But, finally after almost 2 years of being here, 3 phones i grabbed my cojones and rooted my SG2 while still stock. So here are some things. I was going nuts to get Nandroid backup, come to find out that is just a normal back up while in recovery mode.
Now i was trying to do some things with Titanium Backup but got a bit confused. I noticed that with the lite version, I can only uninstall apps not freeze. I want to clean my phone from all the clogs, especially when i notice my memory use shows most of the time 550m-769m, which i have to keep cleaning it. Hoping, removing some apps will help this. What is the difference between freezing and uninstalling. Also, i came across:
https://spreadsheets.google.com/spr...SENVeXlqUm5vV0E&single=true&gid=0&output=html
Which it suppose to tell me which i can which i cant. Does this still apply with ICS? And looking at the list, all greens are good, correct?
Also, using root explorer is kinda weird. I was trying to install S Voice which it seems to be a big pain. For one, i have the package in a folder. When searching for it with Root Explorer, and i find S Voice, try to change permission it wont let me. Telling me the following, "Permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
Also, trying to copy something into my system/app wont let me either.
What am i doing wrong? or missing?
thanks in advance.

I know the difference from freezing and uninstalling is that freezing halts the app from running and removes it from your app list. If you are uninstalling something you think is bloat, back it up first, in case it screws things up you can restore it. Freeze is a good way to test whether or not you want to just simply uninstall it.
Titanium Backup Pro is totally worth the few bucks though if you can afford it.. a real good buy..
As far as the other stuff, I don't mess with system/app things so maybe someone else can help with that.
For the green-coloured apps, I would make sure I have an alternate app that can take care of that feature of the phone. For example you can remove the camera app, but without a replacement/alternate app your phone won't have a camera function.
TBP is the perfect app to test whether an app is good to remove. Just freeze it and see if your phone acts up. My understanding is that freezing=not letting an app run, uninstalling=getting rid of it.
In terms of not having the permission to copy files in the system directories, you may need to install a terminal emulator to change the permissions and do the copying manually.
Thank you guys and sorry for the very late reply. Using TBP i was able to FREEZE many apps, decided to go this route, i was and still am abit afraid of damaging something and not being able to go back and fix it.
However, i still have a few situations. Even freeze so many apps my battery still dies very fax with little use i give the phone. I also see the following apps under my memory usage and i do not know what they are and if they can be froze too to even get more memory back.
Enterprise VPN Service
IPService
SIM Toolkit
CSC
Bluetoothtest (i know that is the bluetooth but do not know if there is a way to freeze this program)
Google Services Framework
Package Access Helper

Atmazzz i want to say thank you. Doing what you said helped my hang. I do not have that problem anymore. But i am wondering if fixing the permission could have be the cause i lost S Voice talkback feature. What i mean, is that after doing the wipe cache/dalvik and fixing permissiong, now my S Voice does not talk back to me. No matter how many time i restart the phone or whatever i do, it wont talk anymore.
On another note, thanks to you, i have come to understand more about all the rooting. All i have to do now is soon gets some strength and install a new rom than stock. But there are so many, i do not know which one to use. Especially with the official ICS i bet they are better now.
I just also hope that neither of the rom come with the bricking problem. As far as i read it only happens when using ICS kernel and my phone is 0X12 so i get worry.

Please help me understand what I did wrong

Okay, I want to be out in the open. I have never rooted a phone, nor ever wished to do it for myself. Unfortunately, I have a father who believes everything is a 1-2-3 clicks away from perfection, which is why he prefers not to do it himself.
Anyways, he requested that I root his phone because he believe it will make it run faster
I tried following the steps on this website, from a link which was for the phone SMG-M919(T-mobile S4)(Ver. 4.3) . This is the link, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2294005
So I did finish all the steps required. I got my phone rooted, i checked by downloading "Root Checker". SuperSU even asked for permission, to my limited knowledge that means the phone is rooted.
Anyways, the problem seems to be that when I first opened the SuperSU app, it asked to be updated, it just kept loading and loading, 20 minutes must have passed. The loading screen said it it takes too long, just try again by restarting phone. I did that, but the app never asked me to update again, which is weird. Under the APP or the Logs tab in the SuperSU, it just shows a circle loading pic.
Can someone help me to understand what is going on. Also, apologies in advance if this is the wrong place to post about this in this forum.

Rooting doesn't make your phone faster. In any way. Just gives you "admin" rights to delete crap and change stuff you normally couldn't.
Changing roms and kernels can tho.
You're fine. Make sure it's updated thru the playstore, if up to date and pop up doesn't come back don't worry about it.

Yeah, I definitely know that Rooting wont make it faster ;D but he doesn't despite my nagging.
Anyways, so if I want to delete apps like the T-Mobile App or those Samsung apps, how can I do it
Also, if I click on things like Clear Logs, the loading circle just loads.... never stops.. Is this really how SuperSu functions

Download a file Explorer with root access, I use Root Explorer, but there's free ones like root browser, I think es file Explorer has root, open it up, navigate to system/app delete what you don't want, and go to system/priv-app and delete what you don't want.
You can delete all tmo apps without affecting anything, pretty much all Samsung apps, travel crap, yahoo, etc. Just be careful, delete something like your home launcher you're screwed.
If anything, install TWRP or cwr and make a back up of the system to play it safe.
Or say screw all that, and download a touchwiz rom in Android Development and flash it. If you want latest greatest version both Sickness and myself have some 4.4.4 roms up. Take your pick
Orrrr aosp rom. I don't usually recommend roms but I will say I love nameless rom....
