What is the best way to test the 3G speed of the phone? I'm about 2hrs away from 4G, so 3G is all I've got and my last phone was only 2G. I've no idea how 3G should operate in my area and wanted to test it.

many people myself included are getting very slow speeds and often losing data all together
Download an app called "Speed Test" by Ookla and it will test your network speed.

So anybody who gets T-Mobile 3G now is able to take advantage of The new upgraded HSPA 7.2Mbps 3.5G network. Phone that are able to take advantage of this are the HTC G1, HTC MyTouch, HTC Dash 3G, HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Behold 2,and I believe the Blackberry 9700.
Check your speed using you phone browser at www.mobilespeedtest.com
Here is my speed in Miami, Fl.
Must not be in every market. 3g In phoenix seems to top out around 250kbps...at least right now.
Should in all 3G markets. It might be rolling out to different cities throughout the day.
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/01/t-mobile-officially-upgrades-to-hspa-7-2mbps/
Also try doing the 1Mb or larger test.
Yeah you're probably right. I'll just keep checking through the day. These speeds will nearly make the fee for 3g worth it.
Mine is 541kps, is that good? lol Have no idea about phone speeds.
The way ISPs advertise speeds is in bits. When we download is its bytes. So 7.2MBPS should be equilvalent to 7200 / 8 = 900 Kbytes a sec. So 900kbps should be max on our phones which is in between dsl and cable modem speeds. This is of course on the Tmobile Network. The fastest I got on my Tmobile TP2 was 800kbps full 3G bars.
I'm in the Tampa Bay area with full 3g bars. I did the 1MB test and got 717kb's per second. Not sure how to tell if I improved from before tmobile "upgraded" to hspa

Sound just about right for 7.2MBPS.

Me too, just about the same, which is an upgrade at least 50% from before. I can't wait to try it out at work tomorrow with a full signal!!!
1774kbps in phoenix right now...pretty decent...
I have always used :
http://www.dslreports.com/mspeed?jisok=1&more=1
However the site posted here gives me much better results, so I think I prefer it. Bit odd though.
Ok guys. When you test it out it gives yous the small download test. You need to retest at 2Mb or higher to see the real speed. I used the 7Mb test to test my connection and was consistently getting 6500Kbps - 7000Kbps
I noticed quite a difference between Opera and Opera 10 Beta. What's the most accurate browser to use?
To get a "true" test I use Internet Explorer
Too bad all this speed won't mean **** because our CPU is slow. You will only take advantage of these speeds when you tether to your computer.
Not sure the test is reliable, got so many reading on my end. 700+kps, sometimes 25kps (huh????) sometime 650++, etc.
I've tried 3 times using dslreports simple mobile test. 1MB and got
~700kb
~800kb
~900kb

Yeah I'm now getting all over this range.
I am unable to test with PIE for some reason though. Just hangs at "running test"
I was just wondering if there was an app that showed when I was actully on HSPA+ or just 3G cause as far as I can tell its either H, E or G. I've yet to see 3G. Id like to be able to see without going to settings, about phone, status. Cause I want to run speed tests on HSPA+.

I think if you go to phone status. You would be connected under umts which would be 3g or hspa as hspa+ but hspa n umts its technically the same thing. It never shows hspa+ even though I live within the coverage with hspa+
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App
That would explain why my speed test have been the same on umts and hspad on the status section =( thx mate
Sent from my G2, XDA app =)
When in a HSPA+ area your phone should show HSDPA under About Phone>Status>Mobile Network Type. The 'H' indicator will show no matter what 3G network you're connected to. I'm assuming T-Mobile did this to avoid confusion between 3G and HSPA+ which is technically still 3G.
Yea I know I was just looking for like a widget that told me constantly so I know when I can speed test

Yes it would. I'd give it a try but I'm clueless on how to make an app =(

I have been using Netswidget. It seems to do the job, possibly a little buggy still at times. But it does show edge, umts and hsdpa on it. I even saw gprs the other day for a brief moment out in the sticks. But it seems to work fine for me.
I have mobile signal widget. Changes icon for edge, 3g, and hspa.

Max download 0.89!
Hello,
I am new to Android - do I have to turn on something to get higher speeds?
I consitently get 0.89 no matter where I am.
In fact, our region is listed as 4G speeds on TMobile website... McLean VA.
I am thinking a bad phone, maybe? Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
Mobile Signal Widget for me also

Just because you are listed on the coverage map as being in the HSPA+ area the towers might not be actally all set up for the top speeds. I live in Massachusetts in a suburb of Boston where we are on the coverage map as being in HSPA+ area but the next town over is ony getting top speeds of around 950 kbps download. The network has not been stretched out to it's maximum yet, you will be getting your speed probably very soon. It is still very spotty. This has been my findings in the Boston area. One town in HSPA+ will get 750 MBPS download (very fast) and just a short distance away will only get top speeds of only 950 kbps (not bad) It will get better soon.

Im also in VA and dont see "4g speeds" but it depends on certain areas just because your in "4g" area doesnt mean your going to see it, like if your inside in a building, or just in a bad coverage area. Ive actually did a speedtest under 2 different cell towers and the most I ever got was 5down. They say the g2 is capable of doing like 14, but I dont think anyone is ever going to get that I would say 10 the most.
In the phone manual it shows the different types of networks the phone would show. This G, E, H, and H+. It wont show 3g because H is the same as 3g and H+ is "4g".

I've not heard of anyone seeing an 'H+' on the phone... *going to read manual*
I just ran a speedtest on my 3G and got 108kbps. This is horrible, especially when I see others with 1.5mb on 3G alone. I'm lucky to get that on 4G.
Even when I'm at home on my wireless internet, it seems like when updating apps my speed is throttled at 400kbps. At least that's what it looks like it's going up in increments.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Welcome to Sprint. Get used to it, I haven't got above 150kbps in over a year on 3g.
Could it be my ROM that is affecting my 3G? I updated radios and did the data reset with my MSL and still get HORRIBLE 3G speeds. I tested my 4G and it was 3.4mb down...
I'm currently using Mikrom btw
I was wondering what other peoples 3G speeds are? It's unbearably slow for me here in Seattle, on speed test app on 4G lte i get around 11,000 kbps. But on 3G i'm only getting like 84 kbps. is this usual?

That doesn't sound like you're connecting to 3G, more like 1x. There's an app called "network info II" that will tell you what type of network it's using. It should show it as EVDO if you are on 3G
No 4G here where i live so i stay on 3G and even then since im at home 90% of the time, I stay on wifi.
I went out of town today to Tallahassee FL where they have 4G and really wasnt impressed with the speeds.
Maybe im spoiled by wifi or maybe it was just a bad day for the network being they were having LTE outages all day today
Is it normal for the HTC Wildfire S to have slow data speeds or could it be because of my area? I rarely get speeds much above 2Mbps. The data speed I get on 3 UK is around 1.4Mbps average and the connection keeps dropping. I get almost full signal so that shouldn't be the cause. The speed often goes really slow at peak times. Does anyone else have speeds this slow or are they much faster?
Disabled 2g

What is your connection now? 3G or GPRS,
In options tried to select Inalambric Conections, the mobile data or similar and be sure that "Only use 2G nets" are disabled, if it isn't disabled it can be a solutiion...

I have the Network Mode on WCDMA only. I get slow download speeds most of the time even though it's showing the H symbol and doesn't matter what network I use. Is there a trick for getting faster data speeds by editing the build.prop file or something?
In many areas Three doesn't provide a GSM service, and in others it is out-sourced to Orange's network. Even though you may be connected to their HSDPA (WCDMA) service the speed is entirely dependant on the signal level. The speed is also dependant on the time of day, obviously the network is going to be more congested during peak times.
I usually get a download speed of around 350kB/s (2.8Mbps).
To be honest your speed doesn't sound that bad, and if you want a much faster experience you're going to have to get a phone that supports HSPA+.
The speeds I now get are always absolutely rubbish. I nearly always get below 0.5Mbps on Orange. 3 aren't much better. Below 1Mbps most of the time.
