I was just wondering if someone could tell me which Galaxy S II line of phones are these custom kernels being built from?
It's been posted in the development section, that their based off our Epic Touch, however, the flash screen indicates different.
I thought I read they were based off of the European source.

That's what i assumed as well. Only because of the flash screen.
It could base of Epic touch, when Samsung made ET kernel, maybe they didn't build it from scratch, but they based on Europe version, so the trace was there
Kernel is from epic touch source. They needed something from S2 to get it to boot, but kernel is still S2. For Bubby323 however the kernel was pulled directly off of a stock et4g.

Easiest root: sfhub's one-click methods. If you have used Odin before, you will find this the easiest method. Actually it is the easiest no matter what, it is ONE CLICK! If you want stable, stick with any ROM for EL29 which was the official GB release from Sprint. If you want to experiment with ICS leaks, then that is up to you.
Really just get versed with how to flash properly on this phone (read the stickies, trust me) and you can really find out what best suits your needs SAFELY. Also most ROMS come with a custom kernel already, so just read the OP on what is being included on each ROM. For ICS we don't have source code yet so there aren't really a lot of options for kernels - it depends more on what type of ROM you pick (AOSP, CM9, TouchWiz).
Just remember to stay away from CWM Touch recovery, Rom manager, and wipe data/factory reset using custom recovery on ICS and you're good (atleast for now til ICS source drops for us). I'd recommend CM9 alpha 4, very smooth and battery life is good for me.

.....aside from Calkulin's E4GT 2 rom, since it seems he's moved on to other projects. Is there another currently maintained ICS rom which tries to stay faithful to the appearance of the original samsung stock rom?

um, the stock FF18 rooted. I'd say go thru the dev section and check out the screenies of all the ICS roms and see which one you like.
1) Have any Mac users successfully rooted? I know there's a new release candidate for Heimdall, but there's no Mac binary yet and compiling from source is way over my head. And apparently older versions of Heimdall don't work with the T999.
2) For the S3, do you always have to flash recovery separately from the kernel? I just came over from the Epic 4G Touch, and those kernels had recovery baked in.
3) Which TouchWiz ROM offers the best "tweaked stock" experience?
Thanks!
1) no idea, I'm sure there have been Mac users rooting
2) yes we flash recovery and kernels separate.
3) all of the touchwiz ROMs are pretty similar. Try the ones that are still updated and find one you like is the best advice

Sorry, I don't have a mac so not sure bout that one.
I'm not sure why you would want the kernel and recovery to be baked together. Just pick your fave recovery and you can then flash any rom, mod, kernel, etc you want. Never knew they did it the way you were talking about. Sounds like it'd be a lot more work for tge devs.
Third one is one you will have to decide for yourself. There are fantastic roms here but my taste may be totally opposite of yours...

My personal favorite and most stable I have tried is Wicked ROM. The dev just released a new version.
Hi all,
Since we have a pure stock rom now, if anyone has the stock kernel extracted; would it be possible to get the stock kernel to AndreiLux so he can modify his Perseus Kernel for the sprint Galaxy Note 2? I'm not sure if things are happing behind the scenes or not? I remember browsing his thread and him saying that he would be willing to port over the kernel if he had a copy of the stock kernel for the Sprint version.
By the way, the custom rom development for the Sprint Galaxy Note II has been stellar so far! I really appreciate all of the devs and contributors here who are helping to make this phone the best it can be! I couldn't find a thread like this so I thought I'd make one.
i was looking for a new rom and i know a lot of people ask about the best rom for our nexus, but i'd like to know if there is some rom optimized just for the galaxy nexus......i mean that i know that cm and aokp are very good roms, but they are not specific for the nexus. I'd like to get a rom with all those features, but optimized for nexus hardware
optimized for galaxy nexus?
stock rom and kernel of course..
btw u post this on the wrong section..
As you post the question wrong here, you can browser here lots of roms are for Galaxy Nexus here now!!!!
Want to know the taste of these rom? Browser here, take a look of some users comments and Choose ONE to TRY!!!
Mine is Xylon! Enjoy~
Thread moved to q&a
It's not a taste matter. I would know if there is a rom tailored for Nexus

Every ROM in the Dev section is built for Nexus. WTF are you talking about?

if you are looking for a rom that is soley build for the nexus and no other devices, i guess try to find the lesser well known ones. i dunno though i never run those ones. jbsourcery, aokp, cm10, etc i BELIEVE are all built for the galaxy nexus as well as some other devices. this has nothing to with how it will run on our phones. what matters is how good the developer is, and how effective you are at flashing new roms. dont dirty flash. wipe it like you wipe your ass and returning to stock via adb between flashes or every few flashes will help keep perfomance up. flashing to stock via adb isnt like flashing another rom, it will format and repartition your device. there is a difference between formatting and erasing.
any rom you will find for our phone is optimized for this phone, it has device specific drivers included, and is tweak and optimized to the devices specs.
What do you mean by optimized for Nexus hardware? CM and AOKP ROMs for each phone uses the unique drivers and stuff of each individual phone; otherwise the ROMs wouldn't work.
Optimized for Nexus hardware is pretty much just AOSP.
ok thank you for the replies.
For whom didn't understand my question, i meant that roms like cm are builded for different devices and the devs are not concentrated just for our nexus. In fact less known roms got more optimizations for our hardware. Maybe i'm wrong....this is the reason i asked here

perhaps you need to do a little more reading as to what a nexus device actually is....
if you see a rom in our dev section, it was built for our phone...its that simple. The best optimizations will come from the kernel of your choice, not the rom.

I am fairly new at rooting, flashing etc. This is the first time I've heard it's a good idea to flash back to stock every once in awhile. When you say flash back to stock, should a person be unrooting and locking the bootlader as well? Or just flash the stock rom and carry one?
