3g data speeds on 9/20/2011...strange - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Driving around and then hanging with a friend at a bar. Both of us were getting between 1100kbps and 1600kbps download on 3g as reported by speedtest.net. Our 4g was only getting 300-800kbps.
In the exact same location we usually get 50-250kbps on 3g and 6000-11000kbps on 4g.
Now I'm back home (8miles away) and back to the usual non-existent 4g and 20kbps 3g
SOmething is going on with the tower where I was. I'm thinking its part of the upgrades I've read about. Any of you seeing crazy 3g speeds? in normally slow areas?

I complained to sprint for a week about my horrible 3g signal at home and work. At the end my speeds at home went from .02 mbps to 1.5. Has to be a fluke but it's nice nonetheless. I still get horrible speeds at work.

This was in Visalia, Ca

I opened a ticket with Sprint about their horrible 3G speeds (100-200 kbps) during peak hours. Spoke to their advanced support who claimed that the towers I'm connecting to are functioning fine, but I strongly believe that Sprint's 3G network is not scaling up well with all the new Android users they've been adding lately.
I remember when the Touch Pro 2 was Sprint's top of the line device, their 3G data was pretty good.

4G in Northern Colorado?

Anybody in Northern Colorado, or anywhere in Colorado, had success in getting some 4G coverage?
I just flashed to Baked Snack from cm6 to create a backup I can use while I'm in Vegas this weekend so I could test out 4G finally and was able to connect to 4G from my basement!
Ran some speed tests and performs better than the 3G here. I actually normally get 3G speeds in the 2000's at UNC which has a Sprint tower on one of the residence halls. At my house it's rather slow, the 826 download is 3G, the rest are 4G except the wifi.
Anybody have any luck in this area?
I am in fort Collins and have not managed to get 4G anywhere around here or in loveland. I am not really checking very often to tell you the truth. I hear there are areas in denver. Did you get 4g somewhere in northern colorado?
I've gotten pretty damn nice results with only 2 bars of 4G here in Orlando, Fl
Yes i live in Greeley, about 3 miles west of UNC and that's where I got those results from.
Ive never even bothered to turn it on before either until recently just to make sure the radio would work.
I'll keep it on during the day and let.you know how things are working.

I guess I am just going to have to start randomly testing around here. I did not think it was in this area so I have not bothered even trying that much.
Try out Map Viewer on the market (Sensorly), you can see where other users are getting Wimax 4g in your area, you can also let it track where you're getting 4g. Also tracks GSM, CDMA, and wireless connections.
Some 4g in the downtown Denver area along I-25, US 6, up and down Alameda, Sheridan and Wadsworth.
Short Sprint outage in Greeley today = 4g coverage around 36 and 47th (the only area I have been in so far speeds as tested with Speedtest.net app = 1.5 down 800 up.
I've got 4G at home now. it has been off and on, but I've got it at home and at my office.
Denver Tech Center definitely gets it...haven't tried any other places.

4G In Chicago

Anyone have connection problems with 4G in Chicago? I'm running Myn's 2.2 and connect to 4G and average 4.5 MBS. However my phone constantly switches back to 3G.

Ive been on 4G all night and this AM... No issues here.. I use it all the time.
It's on and off for me but that's on the road.

For chicago it really depends on where you are. Check out clearwire's website for coverage, they list where their towers are. This is what I have figured out, if there are not more than 2 towers around a building it will give you spotty coverage. If you are above the 25th to 30th floors your coverage will be hit or miss. If you are in the loop/financial district your coverage will be very hit or miss due to the size of the high rises general lack of towers. The best bet is if you know anyone with clearwire's 4g ask them. They will know where they best coverage is and where there is none.
For the suburbs, 4g is WAY better, it is seriously night and day. I think the lack of high rises make it easier for 1 tower to cover a larger area more consistantly. Also many of the metra routes and highways (290, 88, 294) have towers along them so usually 4g coverage if pretty good while commuting.

T-Mobile vs Sprint GS2 SpeedTest

For what its worth did a little download test about 10 sites.
Cleared cache. Both had very good signal. I'm on 4G of course. All browser settings identical.
And...yep...Epic was faster 9 out of 10 sites, usually by quite a bit.
And I'm no 'Homer'...actually pushed TMobile a split sec faster to make sure.!
That's because T-Mobiles "4G" is the GSM varient 3G technology equivalent to Ev-Do Rev. B. It's not official 4G, it's "3.5G" technology known as HSPA+. But glad Sprint's 4G speeds are kicking butt where you are. At my house, 4G rarely connects and when it does, it's slower than my 3G speeds. (I luckily pull 2300 kbps on Sprint's 3G.)

I'd rather get that kind of 3g speed then have 4g IMO. 4g kills the battery

WOW, 2.3 down on 3G
id take that any day over 4G, especially if it was consistent
but im not complaining I can pull 3 down in my office, and 2 down in my house...just have to stay still lol
it kills the battery, but my 3G is in the 300K range---
in the dallas area 3g speeds suck all around ... limited to 300 500kbps
4g is awesome u get 2 3mbits easy

You are very luck on 3g! Most people on Sprint 3g get 100kbps to 900kbps. 4g for me anyhow inside or out is 300kbs to 1.9 kbps...Upload 500kbps to 700kbps..I am in Dallas TX in the top 10 market for any rollouts! Sprint sucks when it comes to data. Had a friend that did a speed test yesterday on regular 3g on Tmobile and got 3000mbps up and down. SMH I just only wish.....Feel sorry for the iPhone users who will have no service lol to 500 kbps on average.
Yeah I don't know what's happened to 3G here.
When I had the Evo 4G...Chicago had a big surge here...like AVERAGING 2500kbps on 3g.
Was poorer on the Evo 3D days but not too bad.
Now (with Epic) it averages 600 or so here.
All I can say is....if there is a surge of IPhone buyers coming in they are going to.be monumentally dissapointed in data speeds!
Whatya thinkin Sprint?
I remain on 4G here...(have a MiFi unit in my bag which helps!). Almost always run 4M average on either 4G or WiFi MiFi.

Hell just going to click on anything on the website would seem to just pop up on screen as if the computer read my mind.

This is a stupid thread. Wifi is the only way to test tue browsing speed. If youre concerned about network speeds, this kind of test is pointless. Congrats, you found ONE place where sprint is faster. Meaningless. At home i get 2mbit down on 4g, at work i get 12. Both spots are deep inside buldings, both in the city.

Ok Einstein....never said it reflected GLOBALLY. Why so irritated?!
It WAS a data transfer test of Wimax vs TMobile HSDP++ of 10 sites I use for 'testing'. Connected to respected networks...not Wifi. (WiFi isn't a network test).
Both had superb signal strength. Both with identical browser conditions.
I suspect if I took both deep inside a building Wimax would not fair as well.
U OK now?

WiFi can only run as fast as the wifi radio can run, which is around 12mbps. I can easily pull 30 mbps on my computer via wifi, but my phone pulls 10 mbps on the same network.

dont like your approach, but totally agree with the message. There are places where tmobile is faster on 3g/4g and vice versa. Not a fair comparison.
Put them both on the same wifi hotspot and then run some tests

My cuzing showed me 20mbps speed test on that dual core LG phone on T-Mobile. Seems like double our 4g...
I was in ATT today speedtesting my Galaxy Note 4G+ vs Skyrocket LTE.
Skyrocket avg'd 12M Note avged 7M.
Then Dually downloaded Gizmodo, and howardforums etc (bout 10 different sites).... and Note downloaded those sites slightly faster than Skyrocket. Also downloaded a 250+ file and same result.
The LTE speedtests are a crock vs real world performance. Who cares......less you just get off on speedtest app contests.
Edit... Both devices on ATT network. Wifi testing:Note was better by more.

[Q] Should data always be 4G?

Reception is weak in my office at work. On my previous phone, Motorola Defy, I noticed my data would go back and forth between 'H' and '3G'.
With my GS2, data is stuck on 4G. I have watched it for hours now and even though I have no bars it does not change. Am I missing something? Is my device defective?
I appreciate your help with this.

There might not be a 3G (icon) for the phone which is why it stays on 4G rather than drop to 3G.
At least that is the case with my G2X, it is either 4G or 2G but never 3G.
Not sure why, but that's how they made it.
Have you done a speed test to see if you are on 4G or not?
This phone also might have better connectivity to the network.
....
I can at least confirm there is an E for edge Found out today at my apartment in Boston (normally I have 4G with great speeds in Boston, but I guess the bathroom doesn't get good reception)
Thanks for the replies. Yes I ran 4 speed tests this morning in 4G and my max was 1490 Mbps so I think it's working well.

There actually is a 3g icon. It is only displayed for Umts networks. The reason it was done that way is because there is no way to differentiate hspa from hspa+. Two network technologies for 3g were in use anyways and so it was easier to display all hspa and hspa+ networks as 4g and all umts as 3g.

Edit due to phone auto correct fail.

Unusable 3G... Speeds are barely above dial-up.

I don't even know what to say here. I have a Epic 4G Touch and the speeds suck.
I can barely use the 3G data services. Things simply do not load when I'm on 3G.
An average speed test for me is roughly 900~1000 Ping, 7~13kbps down and maybe 40~70kbps upload.
4G is fine but we only have 4G in ONE small area of the city. When I'm on 4G, I see like 10~12Mbit easy.
I use my phone for work. I need to be able to tether or load pages on the phone when I'm on the go and this just doesn't work for me.
Normally when I'm running these tests, I have 4 or 5 bars. I also work about 45 minutes from home and I experience these speeds in BOTH areas and everywhere in between.
Would calling Sprint and complaining be worth while? Any fixes?

It is sad right?.....I been dealing with 50k-maybe break 100k for a long time in my area. That is just the way it is in "your area" at this time for 3G. Maybe when they start upgrading their tower things will get better. The reason I say it is their network "Area", is that I can go to San Antonio and 3g works great nice speed..etc., but every time I go back to my GF house in South Texas 4-5hrs away I can't break 100k download on 3g again that has been going on for 1yr or more.
There is a link floating around that will give you info on towers being upgraded.
I agree, in Chicago 3G speeds suck worse than my first internet computer in mid 1990's.
I have had the EVO 4G and now the Galaxy SII. Both get 50-75k/sec download. Searching web sites is insanely slow. YouTube is a joke buffering non stop.
4G. LOL. What a gimmick. Very spotty hard to hold a connection which always drops. And big baggy drainer. I never use 4G.
Sprint Galaxy S2 w/ Calk's 1.5a + ICS 1.6
Welcome to the club. I came from T-Mobile where I was enjoying download speeds that are 10x faster then I get now with Sprint's 3G.
4G in my area is not bad ~1MB/sec but I don't get it consistently..
3G upgrades are badly needed, the Sprint tower upgrade site says the towers in my area were already upgraded within the past 6 months, I'd hate to know what it was like before those upgrades..

LOL, I visited Chicago for 4 days over Veteran's Day and thought to myself "Wow, these speeds are awesome!" I was getting >1 MBit on 3G and 5-8 MBit on 4G in the center of town.
I live in Vegas and thought Chicago was at least twice as fast as here...
I hear you!
I live in the SLC area of Utah and came from T-mobile. With T-mobile I could get 1-3MB with a low 3G signal on my Vibrant, now on Sprint I get much lower than that with full 3G bars and WiMax is a joke in UT still..
Memphis Tn and I am getting speeds like the OP is getting. I have tried three modems and they are all the same. I am hoping it is due to something with Sprint going on right now. Before this weekend I was getting some where near 900 down and 400 up going over 1000 at times. This is really BAD.
Yeah it does suck. We have such a nice phone but its pretty much all data driven. I don't even like to usr y phone unless I can connect to wifi cause 3g is so slow. Sprint needs to do something fast. I can't take it.

Guess what me too lol. The tower I use from my house is less than 50 kbits anytime of the day no matter how close I am. And thats 3g not 1x.. Even better they say theres no tower upgrades planned and the tower functions just fine
Yet, everyone else with sprint here has the same results.

Just ran a speed test.net from around Allentown, PA. 5 bars, ping 86ms, 958kbps down, 701kbps up. Fairly typical for this area, however no 4G here. Generally I've had pretty good luck with 3G.
3g and 4g in SoCal..

I Get 2-3mbps on the down and 1-2mbps on the up here in Salem, NH and its a heavily populated area....Might just be your towers
I remember back when I was using an HTC Mogul and they first turned on EvDO Rev. A. I was getting maybe 600-800k/sec down and honestly that was fine. I would *still* be fine if I could get 600-800k down on 3g. The problem is that my speeds are now somewhere around 10-20k/sec down if speedtest.net is to be trusted. I broke my launch day Evo and upgraded to the e4gt about a week and a half ago. I hoped that would fix things but so far it's just as bad. I think the highest I've gotten on any speed test this past week is still under 50k/sec with more typical speeds around the 15-20k mark.
I just did a backup so I can restore this phone back to stock and stop by the Sprint store tonight. I'm curious as to their explanation. I'd also like to see if their demo units and personal units have this issue. Honestly if they can show me that it's a defective phone I will be thrilled because I am still in my 14 days and can have it swapped out. If it turns out to be a software bug endemic to the phone then I'm in a less pleasant spot. I could wait to see if the rumors of the new ICS build pan out and fix anything but by then I am past my 14-day window.
If I'm stuck waiting around for a newer phone down the line I might just have to suck it up and swap for an iPhone since I can sell it for more in 6-8 months. I just don't really want an iPhone. I use my girlfriend's and it's pretty well built but the screen is so tiny and I hate losing built in Google Talk, Nav, etc.
Freaking annoying.
I live in Aurora, CO and work in Broomfield, CO (approx 50 miles away). Between the two, I'm lucky if I'm able to get 350kbps down. Worst of all is the inconsistency. Connections drop constantly, making it impossible to stream music.
I remember when I first came to Sprint, I could stream music almost non-stop on my 700wx from the time I left my house till I got back home. Those days are loooooong gone.
I don't understand how Sprint stays in business with such a low speed 3G network. I also get VERY slow data in my area and was very close to leaving Sprint, but they offered me an airave, so I can now use my phone in my house. 90% of the time, the data speed is terrible anywhere I travel. I like to stream some music (foreign radios) on my way to and from work and it is terrible: constant buffering. I was tempted to switch to T-Mobile since they have great coverage in my area, still thinking about it...
Very frustrating!
Welcome to Sprint, the Now Our 3G is SCREWED Network.
