Video Review: Phonejoy Bluetooth Controller (plus emulator demo!) - Galaxy S II Accessories

Hey guys,
While I wait for the AT&T model of the Galaxy S2 to be released here in the States, wanted to bring you all a review of the Phonejoy bluetooth controller (both the analog and non-analog models) - this is an accessory I'm definitely impressed with, and I honestly believe it will change the way we see mobile gaming.
Check out the full review below, my giveaway video is coming next! So stay tuned for that too

good video mate looking forward to the giveaway thanks

thanks for the review. I cant wait to try mine on my TV

so pissed that youtube is screwed up, none of my subscribers are getting the video...ugh

Great review, I'm definitely considering getting one now. Wish I had known it came with a stand, otherwise I wouldn't have bought one separately

Thank you! The stand gets the job done but its nothing special, I use an aluminum stand anyways, this one is just more portable.

The problem with the analogue phonejoy is that Bluez IME doesn't do true analogue. You can see in the video there is a button in the middle. It changes the sticks between digital and true analogue.
I'm not even sure it can be fixed either...

That's true - for the games I play it doesn't affect me but I'm sure some people might encounter an issue.
We can only hope there is someway of fixing it!

I've had a lot of contact with the Phonejoy makers and they tell me that full analog is supported by the controller, but the emus/Bluez IME need to be re-worked to support it. I believe they are in contact with the devs of the respective apps to work it out.

Thanks for sharing (and helping me with the Phonejoy!) - hopefully they'll be able to solve it soon!

For all I know yongzh is actually working on implementing true Bluez-IME support. This will allow N64oid to read all the keypresses and analog values, without needing the user to switch IME. Hopefully true analog support will be given then.

Thanks for sharing - I really hope he can get that done, would make the experience that much better.

New N64oid supports true analog and 4 player mode now. Really awesome now.

Ive been eyeing that mini one for a while now. I think TV out + emulators would prove to be pretty awesome. The only thing thats keeping me from getting it is that I havent seen any evidence of being able to map hardware keys (menu, home, back, search, or trackball/arrow) to it.
EDIT: Actually we are probably going to have to wait until Froyo is released before something like this will work. JI6 doesnt support Bluetooth HID's, so bluetooth keyboards and Wiimotes are no go. Though snooping around on youtube, this thing has more potential than I thought. The most in-depth video showed a guy using the special function keys (volume up, down, mute, media keys and the like) they all worked as expected, so Im hoping the same experience can be achieved on android. If not, Ill probably end up getting it for my HTPC anyways.

EDIT: Right now that app is sitting at two stars in the market, mainly because it isnt working on Evo's or Galaxy S phones... Oh well...

This guy has his attached to his HD2. Also, the Vibrant is just about the same size as the HD2, so this makes for a good size comparison. I kinda wouldnt mind having that hinge thingy, and long as I could add it to my black gel case, and have it fold back instead of over the screen.

Wasn't the wiimote not working because we have bluetooth 3.0. So what does froyo have to do with it?

I believe the problem before was that it didn't have the Bluetooth HID drivers. I think those are supposed to have been added in.
Well weve got perfectly working Froyo roms now. Anyone here have a Wiimote they could try pairing?
I am running bionix_obsidian v2 froyo build. I also have a wii remote and can confirm it does not work!!. it will reconise the wii and will try to pair but asks for a pin. to my understanding the wii remote does not use a typical pin to pair.

yes I did to no avail. people that are using it for pc games can get around the pin but not on android.

I'm currently using this one, and works fine with bionix Obsidian
When pairing, Vibrant asks to input one time PIN from keyboard. I just typed what it said then all fine.
Awesome!
Would you mind testing out some of the function keys, like volume and media buttons?
And also any way to use Menu Home Back and Search with this?

[REVIEW] Phonejoy bluetooth gamepad - new video bluetooth multiplayer via MHL!

A little something for retro gamers (or just gamers) amongst us:
http://blog.clove.co.uk/2011/07/21/...phonejoy-refresh-dual-analog-sticks-are-a-go/
...and now N64oid updated to 2.4 for bluetooth multiplayer support!
http://www.androidnz.net/2011/09/n64oid-updates-to-24-multiple-bluetooth.html
Nice video.
I've already pre-ordered mine. Hopefully it will come soon enough.
Talking to Martin at Phonejoy it should be very soon!
i liked this concept, but it would have been a 'yes' from me, if only they incorporated a keyboard style controller, which we could attach to our s2 ;(
I got an email from the makers just a couple of minutes ago to say they are making one just like that (similar to the iControlPad, one that the phone sits within). Its presently in the design stages.
Wanna have one

I already thought of making my own construction.
Clove have a pre-order going on these now, they need 50 orders by the 15th of August to go ahead (no idea how many they currently have). If you are keen its worth looking into.

Disappointing. So the 'Analog' sticks aren't Analog after all, hence running everywhere in Mario and the sniper issues you mention. Pretty pointless upgrade from the original then no?
Or is it that the emulators are just not programmed to understand the analog instructions?

It'll work with any HID supporting device - which at the moment is a lot more devices that you'll find with PS3 support.
True PS3 support is starting to get out there though - if you're on CM7 or MIUI you should be able to use a PS3 remote right now, since there is a software out that can do it (forget the name, search for sixaxis in the Market brings it up).

If you have a custom ROM with a normal bluetooth stack, yes. There is a sixaxis app in the market for a couple of dollars IIRC, there's also a free app to make sure it'd work before you buy it.

Yeah that's a big plus for me at the moment I guess - I'm now rooted but I'm happy with stock (and don't fancy playing with buggy nightlies again).
It just struck me as a little pricey for something that sounded very cheapo (maybe it was just the recording). My Datel retro controller only cost £17ish - although that's as limited as a PS3 controller with regards to bluetooth, sadly.
Do we have MIUI for SGS2? I might look into that...
In hindsight, I think I'm gonna try and get one of these - there's a crappy dilemma with the PS3 controller:
- Put custom ROM on, allow PS3 controller to work with 'normal' BT stack, sacrifice TV-Out via MHL/HDMI
- Stay stock, retain TV-Out but obviously unable to use PS3 controller.
Seems Clove decided not to stock them though, that sucks.
Ive ordered one from the phonejoy website. I was using CM7 before to play with my ps3/wiimote controller, but I need my TV out too. So back to a rom which allow my TV out and buying that controller.
I was going to go with an Icontrolpad, but its at least X2 more expensive than this one... Gonne give a review when ill get it, it should take +-1-2 months... that suck haha

Yep, the TV Out is an important aspect for me, and part of the reason I'll be sticking with the Phonejoy for now at least.
iControlPad is just plain worse for use with TV Out, while it is better for portability the price seems pretty unrealistic to me. Phonejoy have been developing a similar control pad to the iControlPad style, no ETA on availability etc, but its in the works.
Incidentally, the latest Jirioni Arcade update is compatible with the MAME4ALL ROM set, pretty good with this set up!

And why icontrolpad is worse for tv out? You dont need to have the cellphone right to it, so icontrolpad or phonejoy will do the same thing in the end. I know icontrolpad can have some claw to hold the cellphone, but theyre not needed to use it.
some Phonejoys are appearing on ebay UK now.. i got mine for like £41.00, cheaper that his website and shipped from the uk
I'm really quite impressed with it, love using the sticks in games like Syphon Filter. So good using TV out on a big screen, my phone is now basically a super portable multi-console. love it
Reason the iControlPad is worse is that its a worse controller configuration for emulating systems like the PSX/N64, if you're tethered to the TV then its mobility advantage is irrelevant.

android alarm clock dock?

is there one for our phones? a universal one that works with all android phones would be better, since ill be getting the s3 in a bit.
There is a ihome that charges android phones but the audio doesn't go through the dock. You need to plug in the 3.5mm jack for the audio. It's an alright dock, i guess. Only bad part (for me) is that the audio turns off if i turn off the screen to my phone for some reason.
There are docks from Phillips like AS111/12 (and some bigger ones)
Audio by bluetooth
I use the above by myself with my S3 and the app AtomaRadio as an alarm clock.

Hi,
I work for GEAR4. We just announced the AlarmDock Connect - the first alarm clock dock for Android that uses only the USB cable to connect to the phone.
http://www.gear4.com/android/
It has a USB port on the back so if you need to use a tablet with a proprietary connector, you can.
It charges (obviously), plays audio over USB (Gingerbread 2.3.4 through JellyBean) and also sets the time and alarms from the touchscreen.
Not enough? Oh yeah, it also has an FM tuner. Control the FM tuner and presets from the touchscreen.
It's been designed to work with tablets, phones, wherever the USB port on them may be.
Have a look - feel free to ask me questions.

is a video engadget took of it.
There's a recessed channel that the bottom edge of the phone sits in, or tablet rests in. There's a hole that goes through, so you can pass the micro-USB (or proprietary USB cable) through, or just rest its connector in.
We've gone this route using the USB cable instead of a connector like Philips did because we want to be compatible with as many Android devices as possible. Some (Samsung, Asus) have unique connectors that aren't standard micro-USB connectors.
Thanks. Bigger in the video than I expected. I am not clear on this aspect of the forum rules, but I hope your posts are not seen as advertising, since you are making us aware of a product and not attempting to sell it, plus you are adding to this discussion. Anyway, I guess the only issue I have is that my Sprint Epic 4G Touch hasn't even been updated to ICS, so I don't know if it will ever be upgraded to Jellybean... so I would have to use your app to listen to music and couldn't use something like Ambiance, for example? I suppose there is no way around this limitation?

It's product has not been cancelled. as a rule we don't talk about products a lot until they're ready for release. This product was the exception, and that's why we've been quiet.. The website redirect happened when we updated the website (yeah, we should have kept it live.)
We'll announce more when it's closer to shipping.

Yeah, I have my note 2 setup like his and people are blown away on how I did it. I am using most of his wallpapers so the phone's background never is the same. He is pretty artistic in the way he has everything setup.
That's awesome! Maybe I'm missing something, but from what I see, everything he's using is native, there's no special software except that floating browser software. Then obviously the hardware (adapter, mouse, keyboard).
Does anybody know what UI he's got?

No, both apple lol. I am guessing he might be using blue tooth for one and usb for the other.
Both bluetooth. I used to use em with my iPad (which I sold to buy a non contract note 2). The apple magic mouse, however, only can use its nice touch features while connected to a mac so its really just a simple, thin mouse. The logitech version of the keyboard has a nice case that it comes with, might be a good alternative.

It might be confusing in the beginning but as you watch the video, pause it and do each step as he tells you. The end result will be so worth it.
Great video, as soon as that dock releases, I plan to do something like this.
Nice video. It would be great to see how well Ubuntu (or some other favorite linux distribution) does. This would give you many other office and math applications to use. Anyone try linux on android yet? Downside would be that it has no audio. But performance should be very good.
Amazing stuff. While I'd have to wait for a dock myself, the USB-to-go cable looks like a wonderful alternative. Now, if I can find a reasonably priced portable monitor, I could truly go mobile - no need to worry about lugging around a laptop.
I wonder where he got the tripod or phone holder for the Note 2. . .
Yeah, can't wait to play all my games on the big screen, Arcane Legends, NFS MW, Shadow Gun Dead Zone !!

After seeing this I decided to give it a go. Sadly I don't have a mouse or the MHL connector yet, but it seems to work, at least for productivity. Got ubuntu 12 running with minimal effort, working on debian right now to see which I prefer. It seems pretty hard to use without a mouse, and I am lazy so instead of searching my house for a spare mouse, because I am unwilling to unplug the mouse from my desktop, I instead ordered a cheap bluetooth mouse. When I have everything I will probably make a video for myself.

Universal Remote control for S4

Anyone knows of any app that can use our S4's IR to control things like the Harmony remote or things like:
garage door opener, tv, xbox360, ps3, amp receiver thermostat, ac...?
Is CM is going to generate some app built-in like this? This would be good PR I think.
As far as tv is concerned it has samsung watch on but while the others are nice not sure if anything is actively in the pipeline but also not sure the general public is ready for that given ir vulernablity in such cases when not secured.....

I bought this and it works great. Programmable macros, custom remotes, huge device support (you can even manually enter in IR codes for devices it doesn't have - S4 hardware doesn't support IR learning though) that is constantly growing, the devs are very quick to respond and improve the app.
It looks like Logitech is brewing up something too...but at hefty price of $129.99 (pre-order)

Got this. There's a less expensive one, too. It works well. Give it a 4 out of 5, imo. Just wish it would allow to completely rearrange screens with any buttons.

ThT looks awesome!! i added that to my wishlist for now.......
I dont get why anyone would pay that much for a remote IR app. Hopefully the google version of the S4 comes with a native one.

I think that remote app connects to the base via wifi or bluetooth.
It does not send IR signals from the phone itself.

In case anyone else wondering...
I bought it yesterday. It only picked up the Sony TV, Dvd player, Onkyo av receiver.
It did not detect Pioneer tv, PS2 (with IR dongle), PS3
It did work powering on the Xbox360, but cannot turned off and other buttons did not work.
It does not have any option for garage door opener (Genie).
Hrm...I wonder if it'll work with car alarm too? I'll write the request to the dev about this.
I think only way to make this grow fast is if CM or some org with bunch of testers worldwide assist with building up the collection.
Does anyone know if the Touchsquid is better or worse than this Smart Remote?

They are not selling an app. They are selling a universal rf remote with ir base station to control out of sight components. It just so happens to also include an app to control the ir base station over wifi. The functionality of this remote is way beyond what meets the eye.
These universal remotes are for home theatre junkies. While I do not currently own that model, I do own two of their remotes. I promise you when it comes to harmony remotes, that one isn't expensive at all.
