no data when roaming? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

My epic 4g touch does not 3g while in a roaming mode. I've checked the coverage map and it I am within the 3g area on network. The reason that I am roaming in the area within my network is because I live in a 4 story building, even though I am on the top floor. Anyway, is there a reason why I don't have data in a roaming mode?I get a little triangle with a ! that says "you have lost data connectivity be.." can't finish reading the message because it is cut off.

Check your roam settings and allow roaming.... Mine roams just fine... (If thats a good thing?)
2 miles out of my town and I roam wtf sprint!

Roaming is enabled and roaming guards are disabled. Even though I am getting four bars in roaming, still no data is available.

Buy "roam control" from the market, and try forcing ur phone into roaming... if it doesnt work, return the app within the 15 min period

don't I need to root the phone first to use roam control?

yes ... not sure why it was recommended

I had to disable roam guard for domestic data.. then I had to toggle data roaming. even though it was checked, it wasnt working. So I toggled data roaming and then I got a popup asking me if I really wanted to data roam. I hit "roam" and now I see a 3G with a Triangle where previously I only saw a triangle
but good god its slow data

make sure data roaming is enabled for domestic and international

Thanks! This got rid of my data roam error. I am connected to WiFi right now so haven't checked the network data speed yet.

Worked for me also. disabled and reenabled roaming and it asked me if i was sure if I wanted to roam. Finally I am able to get 3g while roaming.

Force roam with roam control

Hi
Has anyone been able to get there epic to force roam using roam control on any of the new ext 4 roms.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
Works for me using nebula rom and ext4.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I swear I was on that rom yesterday and it didn't work. Ill give it a try. I know for sure I tried super nova, cm6, and quantum and all 3 didn't work. Btw I'm in aguadilla PR and my wifes EVO is working fine using the roam control here. Fyi if your coming to this part of PR roaming is a must to get the best 3g.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
It was my understanding that at least with roam control on the epic, you can only get a 1x forced roam. Roam control only uses verizons towers. The best speed I get while using rc is 150kb down.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Here in aguadilla PR you actually get true 3g roaming 800kb. When im not roaming im lucky to get 60kb.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I just tested it working fine on mine, Quantum Rom 2.7 EXT4
I used to use it. No, it isn't verizon only roam. My phone roams on to us cellular. To figure out what network you're on, dial a number that requires an area code without it and the message telling you that you misdialed will tell you the carrier.

Strange why I can't get this to work. Everytime I set it to roam only I just lose the connection completly. Anyone get this working on supernova rom?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I just got it on my stock DI18 rom and it works beautifully! Sprint sucks in my area (I'm lucky to get 1 bar and dl speeds at dial up speed), but now I'm listening to pandora and browsing xda! I love this app!

I've been using Roam Control since the day it started supporting Samsung phones. It has consistently worked for me regardless of the Rom, kernel or filesystem I'm using.
I'm in the middle of a cinder block building with NO Sprint service...Works great with Nebula ROM, except for texts? Internet and e-mail are fine, 3 bars. I stream stream on-line content without a hitch...can't send or receive SMS. No clue why.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
Guess ill have to odin to stock and work my self up to find the source of the problem.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
So guess what.. I'm back in nyc and roam control works fine here!! and I didn't change my rom. So it seems that you can't force roam everywhere on the samsung epic for some reason. I wonder if it has something to do with the PRL. And the thing is when I was in Aguadilla it would roam on 3g but of course only in automatic. So one would think that the PRL is ok. Anyone else in the west side of Puerto Rico near Aguadilla try using roam control with there Epic.

Roam control works great here...blazing on VZW EVDO. I use it all the time with the mess they have here on EVDO...50-60 kilobit if you are lucky on Sprint.
I tried out roam control and it seems to work. The phone seems to switch and everything but cant find a signal and I just get the no signal icon. Any ideas?
I still can't get 3g speeds while using roam control. At my house I get a more consistant signal with roam control on however my download speeds never get above 50kb. When I get a sprint signal I get 600kb+ When I purchased the app I was told that it only accessed verizon towers and would only get a 1x signal because sprint doesn't have a 3g roam deal with verizon. However people are saying they are getting 3g speeds from vz towers using roam control.

How do you know if you are roaming 1x or 3G, for some reason on my epic I am getting about 120kbps download on roaming with 4 bars and it says 3G?

Download "Mobile Signal Widget" from the market and it'll tell you whether you're connected to to 1x or 3g. I'm currently roaming on 1x, but at least I'm getting (good) signal at my house!

[Manual PRL Update] better voice, moar! 3g! for rooted and non-rooted devices

Super slow data speeds?
Poor voice coverage?
Try a custom PRL
Custom PRL files
if you live in an area where you only get 1x this mod will work for you
I use 0001.PRL attached at bottom. it works best for me.
Notice: Custom Prl's will force you to roam causing mostly all data to be roaming. if you use more that 2 gigs a month this hack may not be good for you as you may get booted off their network for to much roaming.
I put together a guide on how to manually change your prl on the epic touch. This will work with rooted and non rooted devices.
For windows users only.
First you need your MSL code.
1. go to the market and install terminal emulator
2. Type ‘’getprop ril.MSL’’ this command is case sensitive so make sure it’s typed correctly.
3. Take note of the 6 digit output number.
or
1. Call sprint and tell them you want your MSL number to do a data reset or some BS story like that. They will usually give it to you. If they don’t hang up and call back until you get someone that will.
2. Make sure you write down the number.
Now on to installing the software and drivers.
1. Download, and install the QPST application
2. Download, and install the Samsung drivers
3. Make sure USB debugging unchecked. Menu>settings>applications>development
4. On the dial pad dial ##8778# and select all. Click home
5. Plug in your device and let everything install.
6. Check the ‘’USB tethering’’ ox under menu>settings>wireless and networks>tethering. This should install a few things needed to create a com port.
7. Open up device manager on your computer. Check to see if you have a tab called ‘’Ports (COM & LPT)’’
8. Take note of what your com port number is. Should say ‘’ SAMSUNG mobile modem diagnostics serial port’’ Mine was 9 yours will most likely be different.
Now let’s change your PRL
1. Open up ‘’QPST Configurations’’ on your computer Start>All Programs> QPST> QPST Configuration.
2. Make sure you are on the ‘’ports’ tab and click ‘’add new port’’
3. Look for the port number that you got from device manager
4. If it’s not there uncheck ‘’ Show Serial and USB/QC Diagnostic ports only’’ if it still doesn’t show unplug usb and restart phone and computer.
5. After you add the correct comport click ok.
6. Now highlight the com port and click ‘’Start Clients” on the top of QPST and open Service programming.
7 .in the screen that opens you should see the phone name FFA6550-ZRF6500, the phone number should be wrong but that’s ok. Select it and click ok.
8. Click the ‘’Roam’’ tab and browse for the .PRL file you wish to load to your phone
9. Click write to phone. QPST will now ask you for the ‘’service programming code’’ this is where you type the MSL code
10. Your phone will automatically reboot and you should be on the PRL you flashed.
11. To check menu>settings>about phone> status check the PRL version. it should match the prl number that you flashed.
12. down load Netmonitor from the market this will tell you the carrier you are roaming on, in my case its sprint, and the network type, mine is EvDo rev.A! :-D
13. Don't forget to add a check to ''USB debugging'' in menu>settings>applications>development otherwise some applications like titanium back up wont work.

For those people don't know, it force you to roam on Verizon network
OP please include a warning about using this PRL and possible related issues to it.
There was a thread like this for the Evo when it launched, and if I recall correctly, it wasn't even worth it. Barely worked for anybody. Connection was very flaky.
Hopefully this is different though. I'll give it a shot after I root.

Yes. Use this PRL very very very carefully. You can, and will, be kicked out of your contract if you use this PRL exclusively and talk a lot and/or consume a light-to-moderate amount of data.
You've been warned.

To get back to normal update your PRL as you normally would. This is different from roam control in that it puts you on Verizon/Alltel towers exclusively and instead of forcing roaming which would be at 1X it is full-speed 3G.
It works very well, especially if you are in a congested or low-signal area. It has helped me out on a number of occasions.
That said, be warned. This isn't something to play around with if you don't understand what is going on.
Roaming costs Sprint money and they will happily give you the boot for costing them too much money. Typically, but not always, they will send you a letter or call you before cancelling your contract. 1000 minutes/300mb is the guideline to go by. Plenty of people have gone far beyond that without a peep from Sprint but I wouldn't risk it...
...unless you want out of your contract.
Thanks. I get it now

Anyone can confirm if it can roam on pcs band with prl 11115. Since the og epic would not do evdo roam on pcs band.
Can someone post some speed test results? I want to see if they have improved. Thanks.

I'm curious to see some speedtest results.. This is intriguing, I wouldn't mind swapping the PRL at the beginning of the month until I hit ~200MB of 3G data usage and then 'updating' to the Sprint PRL for the remainder of the month. My 3G speeds here are horrible, I left Sprint last summer and at the time 3G speeds weren't bad at all.. now I'm back a year later and I'm getting 10-15kBps.. unacceptable! When I can get 4G signal the speeds are usually between 150kBps-1,000kBps (very acceptable) but most of the time the signal doesn't penetrate buildings at all.
Sprint kicking someone off of their network because of the excessive roaming would be a slap in the face in my opinion.. if they upgraded their network then we wouldn't have to be putting matters into our own hands!
In areas where there is no Sprint 4G coverage but there is Verizon 4G would doing this make it so you'd pick up Verizon's 4G signal?

have you tried removing the proxy settings?
Here's what I've experienced:
3G Sprint Proxy Enabled: About 600Kb/s
3G Sprint Proxy Disabled: About 1000-1200Kb/s
3G Verizon (with a verizon phone, droid x): about 500Kb/s
So basically I get better speeds with sprint .. unless i'm in a place that roams

I'm going to have to go somewhere and roam now...(I purchased Roam Control a year ago for my Moment, but I don't want to root my ET until there is an unroot method)
I ALWAYS had data while roaming with my Samsung Moment. Granted, sometimes it was slow as molasses, but I always had it!
I'm actually seriously considering turning this phone back in... With Sprint's crappy network, once you get inside a building, often the only signal you can get is a roaming cellular signal... which makes the GSII a hair more than useless.

I had this happen. I had to go under Wireless and Network then to Roaming. Uncheck all settings in Roaming guard and Roaming settings. Reboot phone then go back and check everthing under Roaming settings again. I think I had to enable the data block under roaming guard. Anyway - it finally told me I was roaming and asked for permission to connect to data. Also using Roam Control.

auto switch between wifi and mobile data

i want to know if there is any setting or app that can detect the presence of wifi and automatically switch from mobile data to wifi and vice versa.
scenario - my office has a wifi network available, i prefer to keep my mobile data switched ON at all times, so is it possible to have this in such a way that as soon as i enter office, the phone detects the wifi, switches off mobile data and starts using wifi till the time i leave office, and then it goes back to mobile data ? this way i save on my mobile data usage. also a notification would be preferred to ensure its workin as desired.
any ideas ?
PS - i read about an app called "tasker" however i am not sure how to use it and if it will solve my purpose or not.
Just leave your WiFi on all the time and when your in range of a wireless network that your phone has remembered it should auto connect and will use the WiFi over your mobile data. I think most smartphones do that by default.

No it not a home office. Its open wifi at a University. I dont think its a firewall issue because when I got up to the third floor in still connected to the same wifi and I am able to send and receive text.
It still could be, if you went 4 floors up a building, you undoubtedly changed access points, different floors usually means different switches as well, and the switch could also be connected to a different router, or VLAN in the switches. Different VLAN's can and often do have different access... based on access control lists or ACL'S. ..

You are correct but I know that all our APs are on the same switch and vlans. I should have said tyhis in my orginal post that it does work sometimes. Its usally when my cell bars drops below 3 bars that it doesnt work..
Okay, then it could be that it's intermittent on the cell connection, and the phone tries to run most of the connections through the wireless, and it's missing the connection on the cell side, and since it's intermittent, and it has a connection via wireless, it's not trying as hard to make the cell connection, and can't get the push notifications on the LAN side. When it gets enough of a cell connection, the sms push notifications make it on the cell connection, if you force the cell connection, it tries harder to make the connection work, it normally wouldn't to save battery use.

I went into wifi calling setting and choose use cellular first. Is that what you're referring to?
No, that's not going to do anything about the push notifications from the carrier for sms messages, that's for routing voice calls. You may want to contact your carrier, and explain the situation, and ask if the sms push notifications go only on the cell network, or if they go across the Internet, if they go across the Internet, talk to the universities IT help desk and ask if they block sms push notifications. As far as making your phone deal with the cell network differently, that would be a question more for a developer. ..

This is how I fixed my phone from not sending/receiving text while connected to my Wifi at home. Copy down all of the stock APN settings and then create a new one and change the APN Protocol and APN Roaming Protocol to IPv4/IPv6.
I try to spread this information as much as possible because of how frustrating it was not getting Text. Also you have to turn off Wifi Calling or switch it to "Cellular Preferred.
Hopefully this fixes your particular problem. It did for me, after switching to T-Mobile.
Good luck!
