Successfully Flashed to JG5 - Here's what I did

Hi all,
Thanks to those who have helped along the way. None of this is my work, I am just putting it all in the one place for those who are in a similar situation as me - wanting to do get onto JG5, but not knowing how. Hopefully you can follow along!
This is the first time I've ever done anything to an Android phone, so consider me a noob! Here's all the files I used - multiupload.com/66CNCCTE4W (you will need to copy and paste the link into your address bar as I can't post links yet
Before you start, I did this on my Australian Samsung Galaxy S, so I'm not sure how different your model is!
Before starting, unzip the downloaded file above to your hard drive, and extract it to an easy to find folder - I'd suggest somewhere on your desktop.
1. Open the Odin3_v1.0 folder
2. Run Odin3_v1.0.exe program
3. Select the PIT, PDA, Phone and CSC files by clicking on the button, then locating the file in the I9000XWJG5 folder
a) PIT - s1_odin_20100512.pit
b) PDA - CODE_I9000XWJG5.tar
c) PHONE - MODEM_I9000XXJG1
d) CSC - CSC_I9000OXXJG4.tar
4. Remove the External MicroSD Card and the Sim Card
5. Turn the phone off
6. Get into download mode by pressing volume down + home key + power button
7. Connect the USB Cable from phone to computer
8. Wait for the drivers to be automatically installed.
9. Once drivers are fully installed, click START in Odin.
And that should be it!
P.s. I had to manually select my Network by going into Settings, Wireless and network, Mobile networks, and then selecting the Network (for me it was Optus). You will probably want to select Swype as the default input. To do this, press and hold a text input field, and press input and select Swype.

You don't need to do step one and two.

lol,why bother about root ur device when u can straight away flash it like step 3??

Since we are going to flash new rom and will need to do those again ????

Didnt work
So i tried to flash my SGS last night but it didnt turn out so well.
put all the bits and bobs in (.pit pda phone and modem) and then connected the phone in Download mode, seemed to connect to Odin, ID:COM 0:[COM20], clicked start, it seemed to be working so went to check on dinner and when i came back it didnt seem to be doing much, screen on the phone was blank and odin looked like it was tring to move across factoryfs.rfs, i look in the CODE file and saw that the factoryfs.rfs file was huge so thought id just leave it and wait. but nothing left it for 4-5 hrs then left the comp on all night when i cam back it was in the same spot but said removed and the phone was showing a phone then triangel with a ! inside the computer. so i unpluged it took out the bat and put it back tried turning it on, same thing, turned it off again and put into download mode seems to work but didnt get a chance to play with it at home, at work now and cant do it because it asks for admi privileges to install the drivers, so ill wait till im home again. anyone got ideas of what it might be? should i have connected to port 7?

Really? There ya go. Told you I was a noob! Sorry to confuse people. I have edited the original post so it only shows the flashing part.

#4 is not needed.
BTW: your tutorial is already stickied in the big faq (post 2).

I think alot of noobs will find this very useful. It's easier to follow for those who are flashing for the first time, i'm sure others wil appreciate your effort.

Don't worry if the steps are already in post # 2. I find yours better and more direct. More importantly, your phone is also from Australia, same as mine.

The only problem is that I don't seem to be able to download it. It stops after a few bytes. Know of any alternative links?
Edit: On the other hand, after going through some of the comments on threads related to JG5, all the problems are still there, so I don't see any real advantage over JG3. Will stick to this, since I'm about to get a replacement for my phone soon.

How do i get Superuser in to this?? And can i use Lagfix 2.0 too?? Please answer to me..i'm so so so damn gr8ful about all your hard work! Do i have to root my SGS again and where i can find the latest file update.zip which works with this your version?? I have already update.zip but it's kinda old file though.

LauncherPro problems
Hiya!!
U have any idea when i installed this jg5 my launcherpro won't work anymore at all, it just force closes all the time and i can't open my phone at all?? Why this is happening??
How do install this but still use LauncherPro??
( Though it works when i install it but immeadiately when i try ty restart my LauncherPro it starts to force close 24/7)
When i did a factory reset it didn't make it completely, it left something in in phone about this jg5...maybe that's why my LP is not working anymore...

Sorry but i'm a noob so don't judge me, i have a question now, where i can get "Stock 2.1 Eclair"?? I have now FRF91.372 2.2 in my phone it works like ****!! I don't even get LauncherPro work without continious force closes...i want that firmware where LP works without any force closes!!
Please help a noob...please, now i know how to use Odin, cause i have flashed already 3 times. But all the firmwares what i've tried have sucked.
PS: Is there any way i can do a raw clean for my SGS before install new firwmare, i ask cause i want to SGS completely empty before i install new firmware, is this possible?? I heard that if you swype your SGS empty new firmware will work much better...but this is just a rumour though

All the ROMs that are released by Samsung themselves are stock ROMs, e.g. JG5 is a Stock Eclair 2.1 ROM.

I just switched from the Evo to the Epic and love it so far. My ? is I can not for the life of me root the epic. I downloaded everything it says and still nada. If there is someone on these forums that can walk me through because it may have to do something with my computer I dont know but it is just so frustrating. I had the Omnia at one time with Verizon and I learned how to root with that but I just need someone to help me I have read all the post on the topic still no luck its just so frustrating

Well 1st question what kind of os do you have on your computor?
2nd did you download one clock root and recovery?
3rd did you turn your phone onto debugging mode?

Don't forget the samsung drivers need to be installed on your pc..

1st you need the samsung galaxy s drivers
2nd download the one click root and recovery FINAL with clockwork mod 2.5 or something
Then plug your phone in with usb debugging on, let it insall whatever on your computer, and then run the run.bat or whatever file in the one click recovery folder and it'll root it right in front of your eyes

I keep getting an error come up saying I do not have privelleges and I did download everything that was needed and it seems like it will only let me download anything only from the market maybe I need to switch to allow 3 rd party applications or something alont that lines and thanks for the fast responses Ill figure it out and my operation system is Windows Vista eternity if that means anything diff than normal windwos vista 2209 64 x with a quad core proc
Intle R Core Quad cpu Q9300 thats given me no problems in the past I rooted the samsung omnia with this ok its prob just one stupid thing im doing wrong

As it has been stated before, you'll need those drivers.
I've rooted 2 epics, the first one was done slowly and worked fine.
2nd one. I thought I got everything, but rushed it, and kept getting errors.
Had to re-read instructions,.. Make sure you follow everything, I remember I had to mount the SD card. (or was that flashing recovery...)
steps might have changed as this was so long ago.. I remember that kept getting me stuck.

[Q] HELP PLEASE! bricked or semi bricked...

either way im screwed, i have been searching for hours and i knew the risks involved but i proceeded anyway. not blaming anyone just asking for some help please. im 700 miles from home sitting in a truckstop gameroom leeching of mcds wifi cause they are closed all i have is my laptop and phone. i have looked at several posts and have tried different things with hiemdall and odin including downloading files multiple times, different cables, different usb ports, and nothing is working. im really freaking out here. please help...

lol ok thanks that was good thinking to blame them for it phone was rooted using superoneclick and i couldnt get cwm to work to flash any roms, so i thought i would go back to stock and start from scratch. so i downloaded everything like the many tutorials said followed everything step by step and now it wont do anything except download mode. so do you think if all else fails blaming sprint for the brick will work?

ive downloaded the stock tar from about 3 maybe 4 different threads and was using odin. is there a smaller tar available? i have been trying to fix my phone for hours upon hours and the stock tar takes awhile to download on this connection. thank you guys for all the responses so late guys, please keep them coming.

Thats the only tar you need . It is a large file your going to have to wait and let it download. At this point it is your only option. Wait and let it download . its the ec05 tar and the only way your going to be able to fix your phone now. Pull out your phones batt so it does not die and wait for the tar to download , and then follow those directions to odin it and you will be back up and runing

Sooo, you installed the ei22 update with your current clockwork? I'm confused now. If u have a pc, just odin ec05 once in download mode and re-receive the ei22 ota download. Boom, you'll have a working phone.

Thats Qbking77's video on how to bring your phone back to stock its also a brick fix, when i first put a rom on my phone something went wrong and i was bricked, that helped. Then id suggest using OneClickRoot and CWM. He also has a video on that. its this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymN1H2e9YMk hope everything turns out for you. These videos helped me a lot.

b16flybye, you know what i am extremely grateful for those that are trying to help my fix my phone, however you dont seem like your helping much. ill admit im a noob when it comes to this stuff, how ever im not when it comes to dealing with electronics repair and computers. and i wouldnt be freaking out so much if i didnt NEED my phone for work and IF i wasnt so FAR from home with no real access to the internet. i get that you are smart and experienced in dealing with this sort of thing but id be willing to bet that you too were once a noob that prob messed up a phone or 2. so if you would like to help try breaking your first post down, if not then just keep you high and mighty comments to yourself.

ok so the wifi connection i was on last night sucked. it would get halfway through and then just stop and say the download was interupted. so yet again im sitting in another mcdonalds trying again tonight to download it. to clarify what i did maybe for other people. i was trying to flash the gb update from qbkings thread. CWM was not installed on my phone so i was having problems getting it to work. i tried some different things to unroot my phone so i could start over but none of it worked so i thought i would just flash using odin back to stock rom. i figured out that the stock one i was downloading said it completed but only about 20MB downloaded so when i flashed it was the incomplete rom and that then bricked the phone. once again thank you to everyone who took the time to answer last night to help me out. i may have some more q's but for now im just trying to download that one file.

ok another update... so i finally have the file downloaded and now i cant get my phone to go into download mode...i have 3 different cables and have tried each of them, 2 usb ports and have hooked each cable and 2 batteries nothing is working...any suggestions?

Take your battery out for about 45 minutes then put it back plug in charger. If still nothing try geting into download mode with out the battery in. If still no dice either your battery is dead and u need to find a way to charge it then try again or your now hard brickd and u need to order or make a usb jig to fix it oh u saidbu have 2 batterys so now most likely you are hard brickd. Here read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=954458 your going to need to get one of those now. Order that it will get you into download mode thdn u still neex to odin that tar. And 20 megabytes is wayyy to small that tar file is 291 mb

k thanks i have the full tar. go figure my phone would be hard bricked. i didnt do anything to it since last night but try to get that file to download. once again i dont have access to any resistors i checked the pos and neg pins on the phone with the battery out and they have juice to them with the charger plugged in. is there another way? i have the plug just no resistors.

As for the poster one above, how much do you charge with that donate button if you know how to revive my phone? I don't see how it can ever be fixed, because it wouldn't do anything...not even open download mode, no showing battery charging pix, nothing.
Leave the battery out, remove the microSD card, hold down the power button and leave unplugged for a bit, then plug in to computer while holding down 1 and power. This will hopefully get you back in download mode.

That has fixed many a phone. Some people...like that Thunder hoser are too lazy to read through the thread to realize his red box was the result of a bad cable. Some people can't be helped no matter what. Use that thread. Dyehya and I answer all questions in that thread.

try leaving your battery out and plugging it into the computer and put it into download mode without the battery in... i have had success with doing this and i know other people have also

Hey People.
I am wondering if anyone could take a second look at my problem. I have had a lot of help from the forum from HTCNerdYoda and i feel guilty for taking up so much of his time and expertise.
Basically I guess my iniitlal unroot attempt went wrong in some part. Now although Rootchecker states i am not rooted. I have files lingering connected to SuperSu....I have been advised the files i need to flash to the phone through boot loader, but i don't seem to be able to connect from my mac using./adb devices it says List of devices attached FA46MWM12742 Offline....i have tried powering down, rebooting, turning off the mac reconnecting....although the phone is on and connected still saying Offline and been trying for hours now.
Can I ask for a fresh set of eyes to cast a look and see if anyone can offer something i am not doing or missing.

Help Rooting/Updating Tab 3 SM-T217s

Would someone please help? I would like to install updated android version but everything I read seems to have links that are broken or otherwise not current. I thought I was smart but I guess I'm mistaken because everything I read is just confusing me because the guides seem to assume previous knowledge or seem fragmented. No disrespect. I am not technically challenge but I have ZERO experience with the tools/jargon etc.
I don't exactly need to be breast fed but I would be VERY VERY appreciative of some hand holding. Thank you.

Download the rom + recovery
Enable usb debugging through developer options
Put ur tab in to download mode
Connect and instal the recovery using odin
Re-start the tab and go to recovery
Copy the rom file into ur mem card
Put the memcard into tab. And install the rom thought recovery
These are the brief details of installing a rom
