battery life - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

anyone else having outstanding battery life with this phone?? I am at 18 percent after 17 hours i honestly can't believe this battery life is this good. amazing.
---------- Post added at 09:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:48 PM ----------
btw when i got it yesterday i let the battery run all the way down then charged it all the way back up it at around 1 yesterday central time ran it all the way down and charged it all the way back up around 7 pm and it's still on the same charge. and i have been using the hell out of it (no 4g though)

I only got 7.5 hrs today

I got 12 hours today, HOWEVER, 8 of those hours were with music playing none stop and 1 hour of internet while music was playing. Didn't touch a charger once. My EVO, rooted with godmode and freedom kernal still had to be charged at lunch to last throughtout my 10 hour shift.
I love this phone.

I had a weird issue just now. Battery was at 26 percent. Did a reboot by holding the power button down for 8 seconds or whatever it is. When it booted back up about 30 seconds later i had 10 percent battery. anyone else have this happen?

I just had the exact same thing happen. I'm wondering if there is a bug with the battery gauge and if our battery life isn't as good as we think it is

Since today was back to work day I decided to test the ET in a "real world usage scenario." All radios were on, including Bluetooth and Moar-Geez. I had sync enabled and hourly, including a push E-mail account. During the "beefy part," of the day, meaning 8am - 3pm, I was using moderate to heavy. During the downtime between 2pm - 5pm, I was using heavily and from 5pm - 8pm, there was moderate usage. So, I came home and right before plugging the phone into the charger I was at 40% battery on 15 hours. I am stoked. It is good. Zen.

You guys should calibrate your battery. Let the phone charge to 100%, run the app, unplug your phone.
This will wipe your battery stats and SHOULD give you a pretty accurate description of where you stand. We did flash a new kernel, and that can take some time for the system to get used to it. That's what I've learned from my Evo anyways.

Yeah same issue here. Phone been disconnected for 2 1/2 hours and 50 min of screen on time lost 40% battery..almost makes you believe people that are claiming good battery life are full of it.

I had that as well. I've also found the power save settings such as the screen timeout stick at the lower level after it is recharged.

This happened to me, but it went from about 45% to 20% after I reset. However, it took for ever for it to go down to 19%, 18% and I still had about 17% when I plugged it in around 11p.m. after taking off the charger around 7:30a.m. That was with a little over 3 hours of on screen time. I was surfing the web, about 100 texts, xda, about 10 mintues of vid games. I had skype running in the back ground most of the day. I had Wifi on all day and connected about 90% of the time. I didn't have GPS, 4G, or Bluetooth on. That's pretty damn good. I think the drop must have been a software issue.....?

from 7:30am - 12:48, I'm currently @ 72% from full charge.
Not as good as i hoped it would be.
Could it be from Launcher Pro?
my evo 4g would get to 50% from 7:30-5:30.
I dont have my 4g or bluetooth conected. just 3g data.

Not too good from me. 2h49m screen time only have 20% left ....
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk

My battery life has been killer since day 1. Unplugged Saturday night at 8pm and when I woke up on Monday morning I was at 5% left. Over a day of use is amazing compared to my old hero and the evo 3d I test drove for a month.

Amazon?
Out of curiosity, do the people who get astoundingly good battery life have Amazon's app store installed?
On my Evo 4G I used to sometimes get up to 48 hours on a charge. Then it went down considerably and I could never figure out why. Even a new battery didn't work. I uninstalled a bunch of my key background apps like Settings Profiles but they didn't do the trick either.
The Amazon App Store runs poorly at best. Thus I always wondered if it could be the culprit.

Coming from the OG Epic, the ET's battery life is amazing. I haven't yet needed to reboot my phone due to the battery problems I've been hearing about. *knocks on wood*

Battery draining way to fast

I let my phone completely die last night because I wanted to get a full charge on this thing. I wake up this morning, and after 4 minutes, it had gone down 4%. It has now been 7, and it's down 7%. Anything I can do?
PS, it is now down to 90%.
Running Calk's rooted FC15 with ics4ics theme and the lockscreen mod.
88% now.

Been on it since Sunday. Location services are not enabled. Yesterday I noticed it had gone down faster than before, battery only lasted just over 8 hours with minimal use, but the wifi kept disconnecting, as did the 3g when wifi was off (this didn't happen in gingerbread).
I wonder if I don't need a new battery. I have noticed battery performance getting worse and worse over the past couple weeks.

I would take your battery and have it checked at Sprint. They will replace it for free if it's bad. My battery gets better after a day or two. I lose 2-3% while asleep on wifi and regularly get 4-6 hours of screen on time depending on how I use my phone. Did you check your wifi sleep policy?

Check what accounts you have setup, and if anything is syncing.
Goggle+, dropbox, and other applications have auto picture sync options which will KILL your battery.
Also location services in google or westher applications, and as always poor signal or no signal.

Sync is always turned off.
Well, I tried something: pulling the battery for a minute, then when back in, plugging it into the charger. I would give me a false full battery light, because when I unplugged, it showed 90%, and it kept doing this every percentage point, so I kept unplugging and plugging until it showed 100%. Well, 10 minutes have past, and it hasn't budged. So I'm chalking this up to false battery stats.
Thanks for your suggestions!

Yeah, I was going to mention wiping the battery stats but I figured someone would say that does nothing. I always do it when I set up a new ROM even though some do it on install
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using xda premium
How many apps do you have installed? Could be a rogue app in backround eating your battery up.
Also with wifi/3g constantly disconnecting also taxes that battery juice faster then a constant steady signal.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
FYI, I am having this same problem on the same ROM for the last couple days. I thought I had isolated it to a problem with having USB debugging running when charging from the computer but that's not it either. Last couple days battery is draining so fast that I lose charge while plugged in! Have to charge from wall plug to get an increase in battery. I am having Android OS AND Android System at the top of my battery stats eating 35% and 34% respectively. Clealry not due to syncing or email checks or anything similar as this is the exact same setup I have been running for months (other than the upgrade to Calk's ICS ROM). I'm baffled....
Install these 3 apps:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.asksven.betterbatterystats
This app will tell you what is holding wake locks on your device. Anything over 30 minutes over the course of a day would be problematic imo. But it depends on what you have installed.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.bvalosek.cpuspy
This will tell you how much time your processor spends at each clock speed. Deep Sleep should be close to 80% with moderate use.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.WazaBe.android.BatteryDrain
This will show you your percent per hour usage of battery. It's optional, but it helps me debug battery use. Typically I run 3-6% per hour with moderate usage.

So it figures, downloaded those apps, rebooted the phone and now its not happening anymore. This has been the problem the last couple days, its intermittent so I keep thinking I've figured out what's wrong and then it happens again. I'm thinking about going back to Gingerbread or trying one of the AOSP roms to see if the problem persists...

Gonna have to disagree with you there, maybe you have a bad flash. I'm getting an average of 16 hours with fairly heavy usage. FC15 has been fantastic, no issues whatsoever.
Im having kinda the same problem. I just had to get my rooted phone replaced yesterday not that it matters it was rooted I had no roms or nothing on it just rooted at the time, but my battery was fine. I got a white one I havent rooted or nothing yet and battery is going fast. I kept the battery from the previous phone. I was looking through appbrain and seen the app "bad ass battery monitor" and my kernal is killing my battery as of today.
Argghhh Bricked it!
Tried going back to Gingerbread and hard bricked the phone! 5 years on android and four different phones and this is the first time I really truly bricked. Blue led on and not a thing else.
Well I guess getting a new phone is one way to get back to Gingerbread.... For now, I'm sporting a cutting edge Blackberry tour!
Why is this phone so easy to brick? I've had 4 other Android phones and I see more bricked posts for the e4gt than all the others combined...

Before the ICS leaks, this phone was virtually unbrickable. Once we get the ICS source and the recovery issues are sorted out it will be that way again. If you stay clear of wiping individual partitions and follow directions in OP you are safe

Ummmmm I use it when I need to. Im not a "heavy" user I guess. But it works for me. I don't care much about battery life. As long as it lasts a day that's fine for me. I have a charger at work, car and home so I don't worry about it. You have to realize, I charge before I go to bed. So the phone sits all night for about 8 hours. Then goes the full day. Then again that night it sits for about another 8 hours. So there are pretty much 2 nights where it sits and is not being used.
I use to get a day and a half charge same method but now my phone dies so quickly I don't if my car charger could be the reason for the sudden change I've been using it a lot for gps
I had a problem with mine the other night too, I charged it, took it off the charger at 100% and 15 mins later it was down to 91 % without being used. Within two hours it was down to 31% and extremely hot with no use. When I checked what was using the battery it showed android os . I did a factory reset and the phone has amazing battery life again!!!

Most of the bloatwares can be disabled by going to the Settings-Application Manager and then select All. Now select an app, for example at&t navigator, you'll see a button that says Disable, hit that button and you have successfully disabled that app. Do the same for rest of the other app.
Note: some of the default apps won't need disabled, until you are rooted and have Titanium backup.

new battery

Hi,
I got a new battery for my GS3. There is a lot of conflicting info out there. Do I first charge it right away before using the phone or do I use it until it dies and then charge it?
Thanks
I always thought it was a myth until I tried it out. My sister's phone had the same things as mine all stock and widgets are the same. I drained my battery right away while she kept her battery full. The result? Hers averaged 4 hours screen on while mine is 2 hours

The let it die first then start charging is a myth... just research it, there are numerous sites claiming the results will diminish and kill Li-Ion batteries faster. Just use it as normal.
How does she get 4 hours of screen time. What is she doing during that time? I can barely get 2 hours but that includes about 2 hours of talk time. Does my usage sound normal or on the low side? Based on what I read here on xda I was expecting better battery life.
We would need more info on your use and what not, after a full days use post screen shots of your use time awake time and call time. We also need to know if you're stock rom and what your signal is like.
My signal is always full bars 4g. I am 100 percent stock. For example right now I have 37% left after 11 hours of uptime. This includes 1 hr screen time and 1.5 talk time. I did nothing but talk email and text today. I did about 20 emails and 150 texts. Is this on the low side? This is why I had t-mobile send me a new battery and am considering trying it.

I would call that kinda normal, I don't talk on the phone for more then 25 minutes per day, and send about the same amount of text and data massages (whatsapp and gtalk) few emails, I average about 3.5-4 hours through out the day... If I were to talk on the phone I'm guessing I'd be getting around the same as you, and I have a spare battery that gets about the same performance.
What percent are u left with by the end of the day once u get the 3.5-4 hours? Now I'm wondering if I'm being paranoid. And if there's a point of trying a new battery if u think my usage is somewhat normal.
On average while stock I'd say 20ish percent... no on non stock roms I play with my phone more and use more battery haha... that's up to you I've seen reports in between both of ours from 7 hours of on screen time to people with barely 2 on screen time. Everyone uses their phone differently.

Limit the Note 2 from 1.6Ghz to 1.1Ghz with build in feature to save battery

I know most of you already notice this but if you don't:
In Setting/ Power saving mode, check the "CPU power saving" then your phone will be limit to 1.1GHz max from 1.6Ghz.
I would suggest to tick on the "Screen power saving", "background color" and "turn off haptic feedback" to save some extra juice.
LTE on. 24h unplugged. 75% screen brightness. Full heavy haptic feedback. Heavy gaming and Internet use. Phone calls. Texting. 3D live wallpaper. Still 7h screen on time before the phone finally had to be plugged in.

Try a day without charging your phone at your desk. Yesterday I pulled in about 7 hours of on-screen time. That's with LTE and anything else internet intensive you could imagine. The only way you'll overcome that worry you have is to test it out yourself. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I would understand this philosophy if the Note 2 didn't have an easily replaceable battery, but in a years time you could replace a poor battery for cheap. Just recently the stand with extra battery and charger was $30 on the Samsung site (it may still be that price)

LTE on. 24h unplugged. 75% screen brightness. Full heavy haptic feedback. Heavy gaming and Internet use. Phone calls. Texting. 3D live wallpaper. Still 7h screen on time before the phone finally had to be plugged in.
I don't know what you use your phone for but I'm going crazy on mine and can't kill the battery. If you need more juice, then more power to ya. I can't fathom why.

Damn, I wish I could get run times like that. I usually get HSPA signal and after 16 hrs I'm dead with 4-5 hrs of screen on time. I mostly text and do web browsing. Maybe an hour of music with wifi on all the time and auto brightness. Still lasts longer than my SGS3 did.
My first charge is 7 hours screen time for 24 hours unplugged. Now it's going down hill to 4-4:30 hours after i rooted and remove bloats. Installed couple MoDs.. Dammed i wish i can go back to 7 hours screen time

You do know to "remove bloat" all you had to do was go into the stock app manager in settings and disable anything you didn't want. That is actually a much better solution than "freezing" with TiBu or removing altogether. I'm not convinced root and mods are 100% stable yet. Most people reporting decreased battery life are those that have rooted or modded something. I'm still 100% stock with ATT stuff disabled and batt life is still 7+ hours.

Even bare stock I wasn't getting that much screen on time. So far I've only rooted and changed the kernel. Though today my battery life is starting off good. Yesterday I ticked the power saving option for the screen. I'll post an update tomorrow.
Today I was on for 5.5 hours, screen time of 2.2 and was at 54% with Power Saving On
So I went to bell and grabbed another battery
Time will tell if that helps
I could never reach 5 hours of screen time but could have the phone on for 30+ hours
I cant wait till we get more developer support, I used Francos Kernel with my galaxy nexus and it improved battery by 30 % and made my 8 hours overnight use only 2% battery. I was using 12-17% overnight with my note 2 asleep. Aside from kernels and roms I use this phone exactly the same as I did my Nexus. wifi off, bt off, gps on, push email on, auto brightness

Lithium Ion batteries actually do better if you don't charge it constantly. In other words let it run down a bit before charging. You don't want to always keep "topping it off". But in general these batteries are much more resilient than others.
Just do some research. There's lots of info out there.

Umm, no, it does not. You are stressing the battery out. Unless needed, dont keep the battery below 20%. Its healthier to charge the phone sporatically throughout the day.
These aren't nickel batteries...they dont need to be trained or "cycled"

I'm a battery test engineer so I have played around with Li-ion batts.
If you can keep the phone at cool temperature and charge at 40% and stop at 80% then keep doing 40-80, your battery will last double long

Agreed. Full discharges are not necessary for lithium ion batteries. Full discharges were needed for NiCad or NiMH batteries as they suffered from memory effect. LithIon doesn't suffer from this. With that said, a lot of experts do suggest discharging a LithIon periodically, maybe once a month or every other month.

Battery life?

What sort of battery life are you all seeing with this years note? come from the ipad 3 where i usually saw 10-11 hours screen time and 2-3d standby, today is the first time ive had it from 100% and i only lasted 6 hours screentime with 7 hours overall on time, i still havent run it down completely yet but surely i should be getting more than this?
Its such a shame because i love it so much, but i cant deal with this short battery life
It's much better than that. I found it better after a couple of charges. I rooted mine and deleted or froze b.oatware and I get 13 hours heavy use

I came from an ipad 3 as well and had the same problem until I disabled several apps, turned off GPS, etc and over the long weekend I was getting ~12 hours of web surfing.
I haven't rooted yet so that should be a number that can improve. I'm sorta trying to wait for a root that doesn't trip knox. I don't want a custom rom so no reason to install a bootloader and lose my warranty if I can be patient. Tried Cydia Impactor but I had already upgraded to MK1. I'm wondering if the shipping rom (P600XXUAMIE) might have the 4.3 vulnerabilities unpatched.

What apps did you disable and how Exactly? Thanks alot

I've freezed all unnecessary apps and i am getting like 9 - 10 hours screen on time with 8 hours standby. Standby is great for me nearly no battery drain.

I thought it was more, but looking at the list.. go to settings, General, Application Manager, select the prinstalled apps you don't want running all the time and click Turn Off. I've turned off BlurbCheckout, Businessweek+, NYTimes, Polaris Office, Screen Saver and Twitter. I think more important was turning off GPS, Screen Rotation, Bluetooth, Reading Mode, Smart Stay, Smart Pause, Smart Scroll, Auto Brightness then adjusting the screen brightness to something a bit less retina searing than the default.

I've had mine since Saturday soooo, 5 days now. I get easily 10-11 hours of screen time. I loose about 1% per 8-9 hours in stand by and i loose about 9% per hour of video streaming from either my Netflix, HBO GO, or Slingbox account and that's with brightness about or just above 50%. I'm also NOT rooted yet. Totally stock with just certain apps turned off and i restrict a lot of the background data on individual apps that i don't need running background data
Have you guys try using this damn thing at 100% while indoors? It hurts the eyes with a white screen.

Hmm, I think I misspoke about the background data on this tablet. I do that religious with my phones (Bionic, GS4) but I went to look at what i did and there is no option to turn off background data. I would normally go to settings>data usage and tap whatever app and the check "restrict background data". I must have thought I did that on this tablet but obviously not.
i think the battery life is great on my tablet - i dont game with it - today it has been running for 13 hours 48 minutes with 5 hours and 48 minutes of screen on time and battery is at 52% - not rooted yet - i have everything i dont use turned off ( ie. smart stay/scroll, air view ) and running nova laucher prime and dont use power savings mode
Face it - it's nowhere near ipads. That's my biggest concern.
It lasts the day, charge it at night, what's the problem, as long as it lasts all day there's nothing to worry about

I dunno, doing pretty good over here. Rooted, but have no froze anything. Only rooted to get gameCIH installed screen is between 25% and 50% brightness depending on what im doing or where i am. I mostly just use it for playing a few games here and there, taking notes during lectures.. etc. This is about typical, sometimes I get a little less, screen brightness seems to play a huge role in battery drain (obviously) but ive never run it dead during the day.. ever. I start every day with 100% charge and dont usually plug it in till I go to bed. If I have a charger around and im not doing anything ill plug it in (I mean.. why not) but I don't ever have to "worry" about it going dead on me.
I'm currently on 9 hours of battery time, probably at least 4-5 hours of that is screen on time reading comics or doing sketchbook pro pictures.
Battery is on 46%.
So yeh, battery is fine. Brightness is about 30%.

Right... It's better then an IPad. I doubt the IPads beat 11-12 hours of screen time at roughly 50% brightness and an IPad has a smaller screen and less pixels to power.
freeze those mofos
I use app quarantine...
theres a dude that posted all the system apps u can freeze
and I followed his suggestions
cant find his post
when I do I will update this one...
Hi all, I just bought this tablet, I have not turn it on yet...
Do I have to charge the device fully before turning on like some cell phones are?! or I can just start using it right away?!
and what kind of battery it does?! how's the charging process?! should I wait for it to be fully discharged, and then charge it to 100 percent?! or should I keep it between 40 to 80 percent to save the battery life...
in a nut shell, if you have any forum or link or information that could help, please share

Dude, just turn it on and use it. The days of cycling a batter (let it drain and then charge to full) were over in the 90's with Ni-Cad batteries.. these do not develop a memory. From dead, the tab will take 5-6 hours to charge with supplied charger and in the wall. Using it while charging will still cause it to lose battery but a a much slower rate.
