2 stupid features that should be fixed with root - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

There are 2 features on this phone that are just so stupid that i've seen so far which I am suggesting be fixed with a custom rom. The first one has to do with the pattern lock. I don't understand why samsung does this but when you set the time for the lock to come on, it only works if the screen turns off by ITSELF. If you turn the screen off yourself like most people do the screen locks immediately regardless of the time you have it set for. My evo never did this. It would set the timer regardless of if you shut it off or if it turns itself off.
A second feature that is missing from this phone that the Evo has is the ability to set your notification volume to the same as your standard ringer volume. This feature should be in there. It's ridiculous that you have to turn down each one seperately. Phones from 8 years ago had this feature. Whenever custom roms are made for this phone can you guys please add these into the phone.

My 2 fix request,
Proximity sensor needs to be a little more sensitive & less wakeup delay when turning on device.

Ability to turn off camera sounds.
Ability to turn off that horrible notification when the phone is fully charged. You come home from a long day, plug in your phone, and then go to sleep, and then in the middle of the night it beeps with a notification to let you know it's charged. What an *sshole.

Oh god tell me they didn't keep that! Lol the devs got rid of it for the og epic and I am sure they will here. There is a app called silent sleep that can help with that.

I talk to my phone a lot using Google search. On my Evo it worked great all the time. On this phone it seems to listen to me talk..then just sit there for a long time...like it's still listening, but i'm way done talking. then eventually comes up and says "no audio heard". Not sure what's up with that. Seems to mostly happen when I'm driving.
love to see that cleared up.

I hope this is one of the first things that is enabled after rooting.

Also, device and sd card encryption would be nice to have working.

Appreciate that, I'd probably still be on my EVO however, I dropped it and shattered the screen. Apparently, this warrants me to use my wife's upgrade

I'll pay a dev to mod the browser with a desktop setting!
First device I've ever seen that also disables this capacity with third party browsers.
Sure glad I got this FOUR POINT FIVE INCH SCREEN!
Dumbass Samsung .

could you explain exactly what is not happening here with the browser. i read this topic in the general section couple days ago also, and it seems like its wrong.
i use skyfire, and when in mobile mode, all websites load as mobile (that's the idea). and once i change it to desktop mode, all the websites load as they would on a desktop... if you are saying NO THEY DON'T, could you please tell me what website, cause i tried about 10-15, and they all loaded in the mode i chose

You couldnt be more wrong about the desktop view being disabled in all browsers. Yes its not a feature in the default browser...which is fine seeing as how most sites have the option at the botton to "Load Standard Page View". But most ANY browser Including Opera Mobile (The Best Browser IMHO Anyway) Dolphin HD Etc. For Opera Mobile go to Settings>Advanced>UserAgent>Desktop. And no you dont have to set this everytime you close the browser, it keeps those settings.

Yeah I'm perplexed when some say it works for them.
Haven't tried skyfire but all the rest I usually test nytimes, engadget.com, gizmodo.com for example.
Do those open in.desktop for you?

No i'm saying I don't want it to be immediate. I set it to 10 minutes and it will only wait the 10 minutes if I don't turn off the screen and wait and let it shut off by itself after one minute which is the absolutely the dumbest thing i've seen. Who actually waits for the screen to turn off all the time? You won't have akeyguard in your pocket and it wastes battery if you wait.

So far htc sense seems much better than the samsung touchwiz interface. Hopefully they can add some features from sense to this phone.

HELP! Can't answer phone while locked, wont unlock till caller hangs up

Sometimes when my phone rings I can't get it out of lock to answer the phone. When the caller hangs up only then I can answer. This is intermitant. I don't know what to do.
Running the stock ROM, and rooted with unrevoked.

What ROM are you running? Rooted or not rooted? These are things you should remember to post when you're having issues. Makes diagnostics much easier
All I have done was root it. I didn't install any rom or anything. I only rooted it to get the wifi tethering.
So screen turns on, but you are not able to press "answer" when a call is incoming?
Its telling you to hang up on stock rom and go custom. Plus you have better support specially being in this community.

I'm inclined to agree. Custom ROMs definitely go waaaaay above and beyond the stock one. I use a combination of MyBackup Root and Titanium Backup free for contacts/messages and apps, respectively. Once you go custom, you never go back
What I was trying to say is that the screen is locked when the phone rings and then when I go to answer the phone it will not unlock until the phone stops ringing. But like I said in the first post this doesn't happen all the time. I would say about 25% of the time it does this. Sooo... Thats what I was trying to say.
Are you using Google Voice?
Are you using Google Voice to direct your calls? I have 3 phones that GV directs my calls to, and I've noticed that sometimes that causes one or the other of the phones to ring "late". Sometimes the Inc, sometimes not. I don't notice an issue when someone calls my direct line to any of the phones.
I am wondering what you would get if you use an app like No Lock that disables the lock screen.
I started using it when I had a roms lock screen fighting with a launcher's lock screen. I would get stacked lock screens, but only sometimes.
Running without a lock screen is not for everyone, so think about how you use your phone before disabling this great security feature. For me, my phone never leaves my side, and I mean NEVER. And if a "friend" starts poking at my phone I start poking in their face or purse... They learn after awhile.

SetCPU?
Assuming screen is off when it cannot be unlocked - but...
Are you running SetCPU w/ a low screen off profile?
If not, maybe install SetCPU, and set a higher frequency in the screen off profile settings.
SetCPU is available in the market; it's also available as a free d/l for XDA members here on XDA.

Good call, I do remember when I was revving CPU way down with screen off. When it had been off for ~1-2 hours it'd be sluggish and take a bit for the CPU to rev back up. Never used it that long though because the Kernel I'm using now does this and using setCPU just chews up battery.

Well, there's something to try then - if the kernel is making the device slow to wake, use SetCPU to bump up the screen off profile and see if the issue persists.
Couple folk note just this issue in the kernel threads.
This is a known problem I struggle with myself. You may find that you can stroke up to deny the call but not unlock. It seems that this is some kind of grounding problem. Hearing that I tried setting the phone down and swiping while I wasn't touching it otherwise with some success. I've heard a quick cycle of the power button followed by an immediate swipe down can work. Some report pressing the screen firmly before swiping works. I usually just swipe up, call back and say "sorry about that, what's up?" After all, most people are used to drops and stuff because of Iphones.
I periodically goog "incredible can't answer" looking for the golden bullet.

WiFi goes to sleep when phone is locked

So after the screen goes off, the wifi automatically goes to sleep hence making those apps which can send toast/tile notifications like Flory and various twitter apps practically useless. Any work around?
Keep it plugged in.
Um...you just realized that? It puts wifi on standby (basically turns it off) when it goes to sleep, unless you are charging, in which case, the wifi remains connected. Data, on the other hand, does not have this problem, and will persist, despite the phone going to sleep/lockscreen.
I would also like a workaround for this... I don't own a data plan, and I'm pretty much always near some wifi connection...
thanks!
There is no work around. It is a 'feature' by design so that you won't ended up with a battery drained phone. Your only hope is complain loudly to Microsoft.

As usual with WP7, MS is taking "don't give a choice to the user" approach... I hope this and other small things get fixed sooner or later... like the stupid camera shutter sound!

Well if you're connected to WiFi but its in sleep mode, data doesnt just turn on. It will for some things, but I found out that for some games that have push notifications, they just dont happen in that situation. The 3g stays sleeping with the WiFi. I only get emails in this situation.

I thought the shutter sound was become of some law saying you have to have it on. Weird thing though, that law ain't in the US...I read that sht on cracked where they were talking about countries saying you have to leave the shutter sound on and that's to prevent people from getting away with sticking their phone under a girls skirt and taking a picture. Normally I'd be like "man, cracked is just making stuff up again" but I've been following that site for 3 years and read everything and can tell the joke articles from the legit ones.
And they probably dont have that many options because they dont want to see a lot of people complaining about battery life. Because if you google anything android related, you'll get a bunch of battery life threads and complaint. so they are just defaulting settings that offer the best battery life and they are getting rid of the option to change those settings. that way nobody can post a bunch of threads complaining about battery life and by that not happening, when you search anything windows mobile related you'll see more threads about its features than bad battery life.
And yes, if WiFi never slept, it would be using more power than the disconnected 3G option it defaults to.
having wifi turn off automatically completely defeats the purpose of background notifications for apps like twitter/facebook or any other IM since there wont be any wifi connection for them to use if the phone is in sleep mode. Not everyone has unlimited cellular data. This is just really stupid.

If those background notification use that much of data, they are not designed properly. For comparison, my son's Focus is on 200mb/month data plan and he never exceeds the data limit.

maybe they should have an option to change it - but it should default to the current settings as only a handfull of people won't have a data plan.

Wow, that's just weird. How come so many compact digital cameras can have the shutter sound removed then? It doesn't really make sense... anyway, I saw in the Reg Tricks topic a way to turn it off, will probably do after I get the NoDo (in a year maybe? hehehe)
Back to topic: sure the default should be the same as it is now, but give me the option to change it, and when I select it, give me a big warning telling me that this will destroy my battery life. Then I know what to expect (ok, I would already know, but many people wouldn't...)

Fantastic... Normally, though, that's true for "bugs," not "problems."
Well, I was unable to find any information one way or the other; this seems a lesser priority for many users. If anybody in the thread has updated, please let us know!

Missing Features ?

Had the phone a few days now and aside from the volume issues which I hope will be solved I have three other issues.
Can someone confirm 100% that there is no FM Radio - I'm 99.9% sure but I've seen threads from other people saying the radio quality is good.
No Self-Timer on the camera - I went to take a photo the other day and went to set the timer so I could be in it and there isn't one.
I can't seem to find anywhere to set the email sync frequency times (i.e. so it doesn't send email notifications in the middle of the night.
I've come from an HTC Desire HD and all of these features were standard so a little annoyed if they're all gone.
Were you running a stock HTC sense ROM?
I assume the camera additions were HTC's camera?
I thought stock Android used push notifications rather than polling and pulling every 5 minutes?? Maybe what you had was another HTC Sense feature?
Everything was standard out of the box, unlocked.
I know the Galaxy S2 has a self timer, also a radio, not sure about the email settings part though. I can set how often on the Nexus to pull from 5 minutes to 1 hour - but can't see any option of muting (off peak mode) it through the night so I don't get woken up every 10 minutes (business emails +100 a day)
I can confirm 100% there IS no FM radio on my Galaxy Nexus
The HTC Sense skin, in the same way that Samsung's TouchWiz does, adds lots of custom functionality on top of standard ASOP Android.
Maybe there are some apps out there to replicate what your Sense stuff used to do?
So to answer your thread title....... they aren't "missing features"...... its because you aren't running a HTC Sense ROM.

I disagree I'd still say they are missing features, If they were present in AOSP there'd be no need for HTC & Samsung et al to add them. Having a timer in the camera app is pretty basic functionality that should really be present as standard.

I understand what you're saying but to me a self-timer is a basic function that's found on most phones I've come across - the other effects are nice but in my mind not as essential as a timer.
I disagree with that. YOU look for those features. I currently been through 5 devices in the past few months that don't have your "missing" features. They are missing to YOU, but THEY are not standard features. I'd say only 10% at best of all the phones out there have those features so it's far standard(note: I do not know the exact %, but it has to be less than 20%)

Android tends doesn't notify in the middle of the night.. I'm not exactly sure how it does it but I sleep right next to a tablet and a phone both of which beep merrily during the day but I never get a peep out of them overnight.

What you're asking for and 'sync frequency' are 2 different things. You're looking for something to silence notifications at night; sync frequency is how often the phone pulls new data down for your accounts.
The name is slipping my mind right now (will update if I find it!), but there are definitely apps in the market that silence the phone for different intervals, such as over night. ROMs like CM7 have this built in as "quiet hours". You can choose to silence notifications but not alarms or phone calls, etc.
Check out Sweet Dreams. Think it'll do what you want.
Could also look at Bedside (Night Clock). It has a "white list" to block some notifications and not others.
The app Tasker is a bit overkill for just this (unless you use for other things too), but it'll do what you're asking.

That's probably because you are a heavy sleeper mate. Also people send out less emails and texts at night.
Anyway there are certain apps you can use to either change your sound profiles at certain times, or to disable data syncing. Personally I use Juice Defender to turn off data at night when I'm not using the phone. I don't have to set silent mode at night cause I am a heavy sleeper too and phone beeps don't wake me up.

I'd be surprised if only 10% of new camera phones had a self-timer function. It's a bit like saying a flash for the camera shouldn't be standard as they never existed on the first camera phones but you'd sure as heck kick up a stink if a new phone was released without a flash for the camera wouldn't you ? Or how about a car with manual locking instead of central locking. Surely with a phone of this caliber a self-timer isn't exactly a special feature.

Yeah that's exactly what I'm finding, I'm not receiving emails after a certain time on my phone. I work with a lot of companies in the US and I'm in the UK so I do many late nights and I want to be able to set when emails arrive or don't on my phone, not when they think I should be sleeping or awake otherwise I end up sitting with my phone and laptop both out if I'm expecting an important mail to arrive rather than relaxing in bed with the phone by my side, and even a manual refresh doesn't bring the mails down after a certain time.

Can someone confirm 100% that there is no FM Radio - I'm 99.9% sure but I've seen threads from other people saying the radio quality is good.

I don't have my GN yet, so I can only comment on your first question: I'm pretty sure, if people talk about radio quality, they mean either the quality of mobile signal reception or the sound/speech quality of incoming and outgoing calls. Radio quality most definitely doesn't refer to an actual FM Radio.
So to make a long story short: There's no FM Radio in the GN.
Browser Dimming
I know on thing that I will not miss coming from SGSII is the auto-dimming in the browser.. I have turned off all power-management tools (I think?!) but yet on the SII, anytime I tried using the browser, autodim!
Can anyone with a GN confirm that this "feature" is gone?
thanks!

It still dims, but if you go into settings > display, you can change the sleep time to like 10 minutes and it won't dim for ages.

I think that's a Cyanogenmod setting, not stock Android. Not that I can find anyway.

Thanks for the quick reply.. just to confirm, I'm not referring to the overall system settings of the display but specifically (on Samsungs) the auto-dimming of the browser.

Galaxy Nexus notification light with light flow

I am really really happy that the galaxy nexus has a notification light. That was the thing preventing me from moving on from my nexus one.
Of course I wish Google would make the notification light more customizable because as it stands its really worthless by default.
I'm using light flow to help but its not perfect. Maybe its just not ready for ics yet or I'm doing something wrong but these r the problems I'm encountering:
In Google talk when I type a message and the screen goes off, the notification light comes on as if the person has responded but its being triggered by my own message. The only way I've been able to help with this is to hit menu>end chat after typing my message.
The other issue is with Google voice. I don't see a notification light up for it. Do any of you know if the paid version of the app will do it for Google voice?
Thirdly it doesn't seem to stop the sounds from the notifications in the night time mode...it turns off the light, but even though in that option I have it set to do the sound as well, it doesn't do it. I had to go into the sound settings and just turn off the notification sound (which actually didn't help, I had to go into each apps settings and turn it off there).

The Light Flow developer is here on XDA. He's replied in a thread on the app forum. Perhaps your answers lie there:

Personally, I have the paid app and it has been hit and miss for me on ICS... sometimes I can't get the light to go away unless I FC the app. I uninstalled it for now until the niggles get smoothed out.

I was having same problems - light won`t stop flashing even after I checked received sms or missed phone call. Had to uninstall app But once its fixed, I will be first to install it - fantastic!
Anyone else know if there's any other app that can configure the lights?
I've bought a few over the years for my other devices but haven't tried any for Galaxy Nexus yet.
I've noticed though in Google Voice, when I get a text, the light is green.
I used light flow for a bit. but killed at after a day or so. Its still a little buggy in ICS as others have said
i had the proble with the light not turning off too. I had to turn off the notification light for no signal and low battery, and its been perfect since then.
I guess knock on wood, but I have never had a problem with the light staying on with Lightflow paid version.. I feel like if you swipe to dismiss a text message, it will stay on, but if you just open the Messaging app, it will stop blinking. Also, if you use the "x" on the notifications window, it will stop blinking without opening Messaging.
Edit:
With regards to the above post, I have never had the "no signal" light on, but I do have "low battery" and it works fine.
Strange, my problem is actually the opposite to you guys. With light flow my notifications clear just fine, every time. However, it seems like about half the time it refuses to notify me at all. Drains a bit of battery too.

I'm working on improvements for ICS. There's a few things I'm working on for a release in the next few days.
Firstly, at the moment gtalk just doesn't work correctly for identifying notifications due to changes in the gtalk app. I've pretty much rewritten the notification detection for gtalk now and it seems to be working fine in the test builds.
There's a bug I've fixed where for some people the app won't work after a reboot.
As for swiping away notificatons, that won't clear them. It's really frustrating that the accessibility service is so limited in this regard and won't report anything useful back on what's happened. Because of this, I'm adding a new option to clear notifications additionally when you pull down the notification bar as this is something I've managed to hook into. Therefore it'll clear when you either open the app, or pull the notification bar down (but will then be off even if you don't actually view the notification)
I've had a few crash reports (thanks to those who send them in) that I've been trying to fix also, but some of these can take a few iterations to completely stop.
As for battery use, after the next market release adding the above, I'm going to try and add a new feature to just display the most recent notification that's come in. Although it wouldn't be my personal choice, it'll use less battery than the notifications where it's changing in succession around all the notification colors.
---------- Post added at 01:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:12 PM ----------
As for the sounds not stopping, have you set the native app to "silent" for it's notifications. Just want to see if it could actually be the main app that's triggering the sound.
---------- Post added at 01:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:14 PM ----------
The paid version of the app also supports google voice.
I'm having a really bad issue where once the screen is off, I can't get it to turn back on. The only way to get it on is to reboot the phone via ADB. Then, once I turn it off, it stays off again. If I press the power button SOMETIMES it will flash my lock screen for a 10th of a second, but then turn back on. This started when I installed the app. I was able to test the LED colors, and it did that during the test, too. Hopefully it's an easy fix!

i got this problem too, turn off foreground, uninstall, install, turn off foreground, turn on. You should be good to go then. App is a bit buggy, but better than what google is currently offering us.
No dice
The good news though is that I can get my phone to work again by entering an ADB shell, entering "su", running a "ps" to list the running processes, then running "kill (proc number here)" to end the process, allowing me to turn my screen back on.
EDIT: Ok, so after killing the process using the method listed above, I re-entered the app, turned the "run in foreground" off, then turned it back on, then rebooted. Phone seems to be ok now.

You can also pull the battery if you want. There are several of us that have had this issue with light flow. The developer has stated that he is working on a fix. I would suggest removing the app until there is a confirmed solution.

Yea, battery pull works too, but considering how finicky the battery cover of the GN is, plus the case i have, it's easier to adb reboot or kill the process.
See my above edit, though. I seem to have gotten it to work.

Slow screen rotation..

Hey guys, on my nexus when im typing anything I turn it to landscape mode for the bigger keyboard and sometimes it takes ages for the screen to follow - sometimes it doesn't do it at all. Anyone else have this prob?
It is slow on purpose.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
So that if you are in bed and turn sideways it doesn't just keep switching, and other similar situations.
No guys, I mean REALLY slow, as in 5-10 seconds. Sometimes I have to keep movin it around untill it turns. Today however its really playing up and not turning at all.. haha

I find that actually it's the exact opposite.
When I want it to rotate, I need to wait ages (sometimes tapping the screen while waiting makes it faster).
When I lie in bed, it very often rotates when I don't want it to, and then I wait ages for it to switch back to the previous mode.
That pretty much forces me to disable automatic rotation every time I am in the bed. Whatever they tried to achieve with this, either they failed completely or I am somehow mysteriously missing the point..

Mine has been staying, and being used to the HTC Desire spinning instantly it was a bit strange at first. As regards to the tapping, there are some modes where tapping is what rotates it and it wont until you do.
Same damn concern very annoying

I mean in applications like the stock Browser. I'm not 100% sure, but 99% that it rotates faster if I tap the screen as compared to just waiting.

it's not slow
it's the smooth transition animation (like windows IE)
you will need some 3rd party tweak to disable it
