[Q] Unlocked Xperia Play for $229.99... legit? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Copy & Paste/Type into Google:
"boost electronics shop" xperia
Can anyone confirm if this online seller is a legitimate business, and that there's not a catch I'm overlooking due to my trigger finger itching close to my money?
If this is real, I'm completely disregarding the AT&T version coming soon.
$229.99 seems like a damn good price, considering my brother just got a PSP Go for $99.

i wouldnt go for it you cant even buy using google check out paypal etc they just want your card info

Ask them if they are on ebay and if not then probably fake. I always use Ebay for the paypal insurance.
One guy was selling Ipad 2s cheap. LOL I god an email warning from Kijiji (Sale website) saying it's likely fraud.

Where to buy Rhodium without contract in UK

Where can i buy Rhodium without Contract in UK. I buy HTC touch HD without contract at Carphone before but just wonder if i can buy Rhodium there too ^^. My house is quite far from it so i dont have time to go there to ask -_-
Not sure where the best buy is at the moment
Check places like Devicewire, Expansys, Clove, and Handtec I suspect they will be cheaper than Carphone Warehouse. There was a thread here about prices, but not sure if it's still active.
Good Luck!
Gordon
Hit google with the UK only radio button. There's 1000+1 places to buy from. I got mine from launch at Amazon.co.uk
The good things from carphone is u can go there to check if there is something like dead pixel on the fone before make decisions.
Last time when i bought my HD there it took me only 450 GBP for the fone while i checked at clove it was around 500 GBP -_-.
#3: I know how to search man -_-
Try eBay.
oh man ebay is not different from the other online site. If u buy it and u get smt like dead pixel on the screen u have to send it back -_-
I got mine from http://www.mobilephonesdirect.co.uk/ £434 on voda pay2go. For some reason it was cheaper than simfree. Phone is not branded or locked as using with my 3 sim.
That's a pretty good deal from mpd ... only problem I'd have with buying from them is that I've heard nightmare stories about people having probs with the phone, and mpd won't have anything to do with them...
For Sale Touch Pro 2 - Vodafone Branded
I currently got a touch pro 2 on vodafone as an upgrade but the wife had already bought me one offline.
So it is up for grabs for £375 plus £5.00 to cover royal mail registered post.
cash to be paid ia bank transfer or paypal. If paypal used then buyer to pay paypal charges.
How about handtech which advertise on xda forum. I found it quite cheap only 438 with simfree
the problem with a lot of uk sites these days is their quality control. i always buy sim free and hate it when the "new" phone arrives in an opened box, factory screen protector half off etc.. they do a **** job of putting it all back in the box after "checking contents".
i used to buy from Play but their prices aren't competitve any more and no confirmed despatch date.
try King of Gadgets. all their stuff is factory sealed and there's a really good bloke over the phone who wont muck you about.
good luck.

Thank u very much ^^ . And about handtec ? Do u have any info about them ?
no experience sorry. but I'm always weary of low prices. I think with them you still have to pay a fair amount for next day delivery. over the last few years I've learnt the hard way there's no such thing as a bargain
i've just chatted with them online and they told me that i don't have to pay any fee for nextday delivery but the problem for the dead pixel is. HTC only accepts to replace fone with more than 3 deadpixels -_- .
Handtec sell brand new and sealed phones but they are gray imports meaning no automatic network settings and detection and probably some warranty issues. This was the experience I had when I bought a Kaiser from them and when I returned it and asked for a UK spec, they simply sent the same phone back to me in a UK spec box (lol). I returned it and did a charge back when they started trying to act funny. Devicewire sell UK spec phones at the most competitive prices in my opinion.
Seriously boss. You can buy from anyone of these sellers and if you're not happy, dead pixel or otherwise then you can send it back with no obligation citing distance selling act. The common vendors like expansys, amazon etc are all good for it. Pick someone whom you trust and pull the trigger!
thank you very much. Maybe i will try with clove.co.uk kkkk

HTC Desire from China bought on eBay

Does anyone have any experience buying the HTC Desire from China?
I read that the Nexus One has been cloned. I see no official report that the HTC Desire has also been cloned, but I have noticed a lot of suppliers selling the Desire through Alibaba. I am wondering if these are clones too.
Today I bought an HTC Desire off eBay from China which is supposed to be brand new in the box.
It was rediculously cheap - 50-60% cheaper than the cost of an HTC Desire from a US seller.
Now I am worried it's a clone.
I have protection from eBay PayPal so I should be ok, but I am curious to hear what people think.
Also, does anyone know of a program which will read and tell me the hardware specifications of my HTC? I'm looking for one of those apps like Intel provides to give you the model and serial number of your processor on your PC. I figure this is one way of confirming whether I have a real HTC phone when it arrives.
Any link to the eBay auction?
The "clones" of these high end cellphones in China are pretty fake. They resemble the real ones, but one can easily tell the difference. They definitely don't run android, and run some variation of Linux that is skinned to look like iPhone/WinMo/Android.
Once you have it in hand, it would be very obvious to you whether it is fake, either from the hardware or from the software, so there is no need to use any software to check the hardware specification.
There is no Nexus One/Desire clones that runs real Android or equipped with Snapdragon. Again, if it is a fake, it will be VERY obvious.
Thanks for your reply.
Here is the link.
I will ask the seller to send me pics he took instead of the ones he copied.

Judging from the fact that the image is just ripped from some blog site and not even an HTC press release shot, combined with the sellers score: 0. So no sales or even any buys to the account...
I would be very surprised if this guy has even seen a Desire in person, forget you receiving one in the mail from this seller
Is it really worth the trouble?
I can tell you with no doubt, its a fake one! Because even in China, you won't get a real 2nd hand desire at that price.

This alone does not convince me.
When I sell items, I am lazy and rip images and descriptions from other listing.
However, add this to the fact that the seller has no scores...so maybe.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm
If it's too good to be true, it definitely is.

Are you serious when you said you bought it? HTC desire for 170 unlocked..really?
Where I live, I can barely get a dumbphone unlocked for that money.
Well, the picture was taken from some blog and the spec were copied from HTC website. That page alone can't tell whether the phone is real or not.
But as I said before, those Chinese clones of high end phones look really fake, and those Chinese sellers are not trying to scam people into believe that they are real. There is a market for cheap look-alike phones in China, and that market is what those "clones" are for.
People, the $170 final price is the result of an AUCTION, not a buy-it-now price. My bet is that this phone is real, but the fact that the seller is from China, together with the fact that he has 0 feedback, making no one wanted to bid on it. I highly doubt that he will ship you the phone, given how low the final price is. He will probably make up an excuse not to ship you the phone (out of stock, wrong listing, blah blah blah), and then refund you (I you had paid already). If he did ship you the phone, you win. If he shipped you a super fake clone, Paypal will get your money back. The only thing you will lose is time.
I took a chance on a simular "deal" for a HD2 and I was sent a small pink noname brand(actually works, my woman loves it) and a FAKE Iphone 3G. Get you paypal refund info ready.

I had the same thoughts.
I will see what I do.
I have not paid yet and can back out if I like by cancelling my transaction before payment.
I emailed the seller and asked for real pictures, why he is selling, what the serial number is, etc. I will see if he answers.
Unfortunately the seller's English is pretty bad so communicating is difficult.
Thanks everyone for your replies.
HTC doesn't sell cellphones in China offically
ebay buyer protection isn't worth ****. I got screwed when buying a PDA a couple years ago. ebay contacted me and told me not to send payment as his account was suspended. Unfortunately, I already had and received a box with a small rock in it which weighed what the PDA should.
I got about $200 back from ebay but I paid the guy $600.
USE YOUR CREDIT CARD AND YOU'LL BE FINE. THAT'S THE ONLY WAY.
Here are my golden rules for ebay, I hope this helps ....
NEVER buy a 'brand new' phone from ebay. You probably wont ever be able to return it, and might not have any kind of warranty.
Never buy anything from a seller with zero feedback. You simply cannot trust them if they do not have any reputation.
Never buy anything from China (unless you are sure about the seller).

Add to this list only buy form China if you think the money is worth the risk
But 170 bucks isnt worth it for me maby for you then take your chances
0 feedback seller from China...
I bought a while ago a Sony headset from China (was dead cheap so gave it a try), the seller had plenty of feedback and I eventually got the headphones. They looked so good, very real. But the sound... was worse than the cheapest pound store ones!! Funny thing is the seller disapperaed from Ebay straight after the paypal payment... no refund for the fakes. I def learned my lesson.
I have seen a lot of this fake seller in china, all of them have 0 feedback or some fake feedbacks. Usually the sell all phones they can in a short period of time, and after that you get nothing and they will delete their ebay account.
I hope this one is not like it
It's one of either two things.
You got scammed and will be sent nothing (Which is what i'm expecting)
Or
You're going to be sent a very very bad nexus one clone.

Is it still the cheapest to buy GNex from Clove.uk now?

I am in US so shipping from there is <$700 now,
is it still the cheapest now?
Will it be cheaper after 12/9 that the canadian version had come out?
Who knows if you'll have to pay customs fees... I paid the extra $50 ($764) to go with a US reseller but they're being sketchy at the moment... See my post (Negri Electronics is being sketchy).
I'd say go US but maybe not Negri.. I'm sure everything is fine but still... You could pay more than you think with credit card international fees and customs fees depending on the shipping company they use.
EDIT -- I JUST GOT MY SHIPMENT NOTIFICATION!! WHOOOOO

International pricing is pretty firm. The UK prices aren't going to be effected by whatever happens in the rest of the world. A lot of folks in the UK and EU buy their phones outright so demand is what drives pricing. The SGS2 stayed pretty firm for about four months and then started to drop a bit. It's still over $500 having been out since May. If you're importing, don't look for bargains and sales because they don't exist (through legitimate resellers). I've bought from both Clove and Handtec and was pleased with both.
Found this: http://welectronics.com/gsm/Samsung/SAMSUNG_NEXUS-PRIME-TITANIUM-SILVER.HTML These guys are located in Chicago and selling for $724.99. Supposedly these prices are wholesale to the public. Anyone ever dealt with this retailer before?
how much is it gonna be in Canadian GSM version?
I imported from clove.uk to the US and they were great service. Shipped on a Wednesday, got here that Friday.
Though I must say, it shipped with DHL and the packaging was kinda sketchy for a $700 dollar electronic device. It was in a plastic DHL bag and the box the phone came in was just wrapped in fine-bubble bubble wrap. No damage and it works fine, but still kinda irked me when I saw it.

I ordered two GNs from clove which arrived today. No import duties. I have a thread in this forum showing the current policy regarding importing cellphones to the US (with documentation from the corresponding government agencies).
As for the packaging, I too am a little disappointed that they only used bubble wrap and a dhl bag. The corners of the boxes where slightly damaged; however, the phone itself was fine.
I preordered mine from Handtec and the experience was awesome. I ended up paying around $700 total and somehow the phone got to me within one day!!! It was awesome to see that tracking from Fedex on the day it was shipped telling me it would be at my doorstep by the very next day before 10:30am... now that's fast, especially coming from Europe!

Popular Electronics, which is right next door to Overseas Electronics has it for $699 in store - cash only. I plan to go there this week and buy myself one. $700 is the cheapest I've seen it go for. I've bought a phone and sold a phone from them before so they're legit.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/108564/IMG_4995.PNG
I decided to email Popular electronics about the Galaxy Nexus and it seems like they're willing to bargain about the tax. Chicago has ridiculous tax at 9.75% so the phone would have been $767.15. With a simple email, they were willing to do $710 flat. I'm sure when a little more persuasion, I could get them to $700 or throw in a free case. Just a heads up to all the Chicagoans. Probably pick this up this weekend.

Don't you find it kinda shady that they're cash only and are willing to negotiate to remove sales tax? lol. I'm sure its fine. Just sayin'.
That does seem odd that they have a cash only policy. Really weird for an electronics store. Maybe they have a no receipt policy too.
But back on topic, I just bought my nexus from clove last night. Order is processing and now it's just a waiting game!

When paying with cash, it's always considered under the table. They probably don't file their taxes legally so it helps them when people pay in cash. Good for both parties. They're a small electronics store, nothing huge but they do carry the latest phones.
Not sure about the receipt policy, probably isn't one but as long as it's brand new, I'll be happy.

You forget about the third party. The government and all society that utilizes tax money. (Including yourself)
Taxes are there for a reason and should not be avoided by dodgy business practices.
I would check the phone out in-store to reduce your risk of having to return the device since you may not be able to.

Of course it will be checked.
Tell that to Apple, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and so on. They all dodge taxes. What they're doing it is legal but it's effects you also. It always seems like when a little business does it, they should be shunned by their practice. The way they're doing it is probably illegal but it's still dodging taxes.
http://publicintelligence.info/google-3-billion-tax-loophole/
Don't assume that paying with cash is always considered under the table.
Another reason for the cash policy is that is removes the credit card processing fees for the transaction. Depending on their processor, it should be around $0.25 + 2% of the transaction amount. So on a $700 transaction, that is roughly $14.25.
(American Express' fees are around 3.5%, so the cost on that transaction is around $25).
If you are a retailer, that extra credit card fee hurts quite a bit. Think about that the next time you buy a pack of gum with your credit card.
http://truecostofcredit.com/378767
That being said, in this instance their's a good chance that this is under the table. I would much rather buy the phone on my Amex and get the additional warranty they provide. Also, why not just import it from clove for $670 rather than paying $700 cash? Makes no sense to me.

Should i buy the GN from nergi or bell?

i live in toronto, negri is cheaper, but i wanted to buy it from bell / virgin because of warranty reasons, but i will have to pay more
649.99 plus tax would come up to $734.48 and negri has it for like 680 i think?

It looks like Negri's price is $730.50.
And even if it was $680:
$680 USD = $692.68 CAD. Add 5% GST and you get $727.31. I'm not sure if there would also be duty on top of that. There might also be brokerage fees, depending on the shipping method used. So at best you save about $7 and then have to deal with shipping it back to Negri if you have a warranty issue, instead of just taking it down to you local Bell/Virgin store.
Maybe I'm missing something, but the choice seems obvious to me.
Bell wouldn't sell me the Nexus with activating a line for at least a month.
So 35$ for activation fee and 30$ for the cheapest "plan".
Same for Virgin but no activation fee.
I had to buy it from a random dude on Kijiji who had some BNIB Nexus for 730$ locally in Montreal.
The name Negri kind of sounds racist so i wouldn't buy from them...

You'll have to pay HST + duty to bring it into Canada, and I'd be surprised if they'll ship for free to Canada.
When I bought my N1 from Google, the courier showed up with a bill for $89 to cover fees, on top of the price I had already paid. I had to give him my credit card # before he'd release the package to me.
You can buy the GN at full retail without a contract, just depends on the store. I bought mine at a future shop with no problems (oddly, Best Buy won't sell without a contract). I think you'll find warranty issues less painful if you buy locally, and if it's that much of a concern for you, then you can buy the extended service from FS and they'll basically swap your phone for a new one if anything goes wrong.

Honestly, I think it is hit and miss. I bought mine on launch day, the rep told me that a few people had already been in to buy it outright, and asked me which network I'd be activating it on. Told her Rogers, and she said that's what everyone else had said.
But I've also heard that some people have been told at Future Shop that they can't buy without a contract, so it's not consistent. I was turned down at Best Buy, but I've seen others post on the interweb that they bought from Best Buy. There was also another post here saying that the Source was selling outright, which is surprising since they're owned by Bell, but at the same time, as someone who has dealt with Bell corporate in the past, it wouldn't be surprising that the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.
You may have to store shop a bit, but I'm sure you'll find one that will sell it outright if you stick to the major retail outlets. I'd suggest staying away from the dealers though, they have more of a vested interest in signing contracts and receive fewer units for inventory so will be loathe to sell them outright this soon after launch.
Hope this helps...

$400 from expansys or $445 from google play? Which should I do?

Hi,
I am ordering yet another gnex. Got the docomo version over a month ago from negri for 460. Has been great and gave it to my mom who lost her iphone
I want to order from google play but in terms of final price, due to taxes and shipping, its about 40$ more than the one on expansys and supposedly the expansys one is from the UK with yakju build. So I don't see why I would go with the google play version since its exactly the same basically and expansys supposedly is very good with warranty support.
Part of me wants to order from google to show support for the direct sales and also for US warranty though.
Anything I'm not thinking of?

In my opinion, I support direct store for US warranty. I have heard expansys sends warranty phones back to UK for repair. It is going to take weeks vs. 2 days shipping to U.S. repair center. In addition, it's going to be easier for you to claim extend warranty through various cards.
I went with google play just for the piece of mind of having the US warranty.
Plus like you said, I want to support direct sales of devices in the US, hopefully this will be a trend so we do not keep getting raped by our carriers.
Yeah, the mobile activist in me wants to get it from google play, but the businessman in me says get whats cheaper. In all honesty, I am not really worried about the warranty issue. Its more the idea of supporting the contract-free thing. But at the same time, it feels weird giving a "donation" to a corporation, haha.

Go with Google Play. They just got raped by XDA returning 10 million purple screen phones in 1 week.
If I had the choice I'd go with Google, that way you know you can guarantee it being a yakju build and (most likely) better customer support if the phone were to go bad for whatever reason.
Go w/ Google Play. If you actually do get a lemon / have problems down the line, you will be very thankful, trust me.

What do you mean purple screens? I saw something about that but does that have to do with a large percentage of the phones that google is selling directly in the US? Or is it just a few? And in any case, super amoleds just have wierd colors. You either love or hate it.
Thanks for everyone's opinions. I think I will just go with google, put my money where my mouth is.

I meant that Google probably lost whatever margin they had on the Nexus by paying for overnight shipping on all those "defective" phones (not sure if they had to pay Samsung for returning all those opened units), so they probably need your donation.
That said, it also illustrates what that extra $45 will get you (excellent support, free shipping, etc.), especially if you plan on getting 3rd party insurance/warranty which can cost you up to $100-$200.
So that batch with screen issues has been resolved by now?
I would go with Google Play. You can get a SquareTrade or ZaggSafe or whatever 3rd party warranty service you want with it. You can't if you order from Expansys. I ordered mine from Expansys and I'm very happy with the phone, minus the lack of extended warranty, but I ordered my wife one from Google and her screen is a little better than mine. When comparing the two, mine has a very very slight yellow tint to it, it's very slight and not really an issue, but side by side, it is noticeable.
Or have a buddy from a state that doesn't have sales tax (i.e. Oregon) and have them buy through the Play store then ship it to you. saves about 40 bucks in tax.
But either way I don't mind paying the extra for the US warranty. I'll never know when it'll save my ass. Good luck.
Or you could order from Negri.

$412.50, no tax, full warranty. This one isn't the Docomo version I don't think.
This thread makes me wonder now. I was about to pull the trigger on Google Play, but the white one on eBay can be purchased for $470 including shipping. Hmmm $440 for the gray, or $470 for the white?

Definitely from the Play Store, can't beat the 2 day shipping from UPS. Also, direct sales from Google will definitely keep the unlocked phones coming, and tell the carriers to **** off with the BS rates/contract prices.
