Atrix to ATT xperia play - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a bootloader unlocked, rooted atrix running ninja speed freak. I love it! I have been useing an Android device for a little over a month. I really would like to go buy the xperia play for att when it comes out. I am just worried about the 400mb of internal storage. I am under the impression all Apps must be stored on the device, not the sd card. I hear if you root your device you can then store apps on the sd card, I just have not messed with it since this atrix has 16 gigs internal storage.
From my reading it looks rather difficult to root a branded phone. Now id love to unlock the bootloader to flash the doom kernal to overclock a bit for Final Fantasy IIV. I am a big gamer and just love the slide out control pad though.
What would you all think? Keep the atrix, get the new iPhone if it ever comes out, or get the xperia play for ATT?

im using a r800x which is the vzw version
this thing is crazy fast overclocked and stripped of the bloatware runs smooth on stock rom
thats what i did i stripped the crap outta the stock rom i removed the preloaded games only kept crash due to needing the files for psxperia
i bought this with the intention of psxperia fpse and ALL the emulators enough to fullfill my naughty needs lol
downside is the internal mem but depends on the users if your an app whore then you need to figure shi out
but i uno it does come with a 8gb pre installed
the bootloader was a bi#% to unlock for vzw r800x
gsm models can be unlocked thru the website you just enter your imei number and root away
im happy with it due to the gaming capabilities and things as far as rom dev etc is barely beginning cant wait to see what happens
i honestly just hate the storage nothing a 32 gb sd card wont fix
just boils down to if ur a gamer and a techy
it does take some time to use psxperia but def worth it
i uno in the end the hardware is good just a matter of software which sony is notorious for this thing is just underrated due to lack of support nothing a little xda love wont solve lol
i will never go back to the icrap

If other carriers are an indication, the AT&T play will not be rootable.

Exactly what I want to do with the AT&T version! Hopefully I can. Comes out the 18th. Gonna pick it up then. Hopefully I can figure out a root, and bootloader unlock solution

App2sd is very easy on the Xperia Play, even without root
Get android sdk, open up command prompt (for windows users) navigate to platform-tools, and type in:
adb shell
pm setInstallLocation 2
reboot
Saved so much space with this!

sim unlock is different only thing sim unlocking will do is let you use tmobile or any other gsm service(sim card) on it
things are a bit hasty right now for unlocking the bootloader but im sure things will get moving again
guess we can only wait and see until its released to see about the website bootloader unlocking

Ah I see. Well hopefully it will run decent till a good solution is found. This play will be my second android device. Still a bit new to this platform. Gotta say its easier then messing with consoles!
Now to overclock and remove bloat is the bootloader unlock required or just root? I'm sure if I could just freeze apps that would help out

i personally love it
plus just the novelty of it
unlocked bootloader is needed for for overclocking because it involves flashing files thru a custom recovery
not sure of the gsm version but the cdma version thru verzion the bootloader needs to be unlocked to flash the root files thru custom recovery also
yeah you can carry the majority of the consoles in your pocket lol

Come on 18th!!!!
Might even sell the atrix then

I was one of those people who switched from an iPhone 4 to the Xperia Play and let me tell you I am happy that I did. I loved my iPhone4, but gaming on it was not the same without that gamepad. The only downside (for me at least) is that the XPlay isn't as snappy or responsive as the iPhone (even overclocked and with bloatware stripped).
But like I said, you should get the XPlay if you're more of a gamer...

Dunno if you heard or read that unlocking bootkoader wipes the phone so be prepared to back up and restore as best you can without root apps line titanium etc. You should do it now. Also biotloader is relocked in a similar way to unlocking forget exact command ....

yeah i know. i always wait. especially since i am an early adopter this time. some of my apps are going on my nexus. i gotta trim some fat and mp3's. and it's fastboot oem lock but i'm sure samsung can still check unless you jig and reset it.
My GN was unlocked out of the box. so look at the lock symbol when starting, when its a bit open, its already unlocked.

I'm coming from sprint but got tired of their horrible service and I'm hoping Verizon will live up to their name and provide better service..any app recommendations or tips on how to maximize my enjoyment with the nexus?? If your going to root it do so before anything else as unlocking the boot loader deletes everything. That's my only suggestion. Welcome to Verizon I'm loving my cell provider and my phone.

I agree with this. What I will add is that you should just unlock your bootloader right away. Even if you had no intention of doing so, it would save you a lot of headache if you happen to change your mind. For warranty purposes, locking the bootloader is just as easy as unlocking it.

No. You unlock the bootloader so if the OP does decide to root, he can just root without losing his app data and then he can use Titanium Backup to backup/restore his data without losing everything because "fastboot oem unlock" will wipe all.
Good try at trolling for calling us "nerds" though.
I remember when I was this excited for mine to arrive in the mail. Its the best feeling ever when you see the fed ex truck roll up.
Make sure you unlock first things first so you won't lose your data if you do ever decide to root or anything and trust me you will eventually.
Also are tons of apps and mods for you to download when you get it. Volume+ is definitely one you need because of the weak stock speaker. Also, for the guy who is getting the unlocked GSM version you don't have to root to use wifi tether ... it will work right out of the box. If you guys have any questions just pm me and I'll do my best to help.

Once you unlock the bootloader, it resets your phone. That's why its best to unlock it from the moment you receive it because you won't have any personal files, pics, settings, etc.

How to use it properly:
1. rip it out of the box as fast as possible.
2. Take out the battery, and the usb cable.
3. Put the battery in the phone (this will take 5 minutes)
4. Fastboot oem unlock

Thinking about buying a Play

Hi all,
I currently have a Fascinate on Verizon and am sick of the issues it is having. It seems a large number of them have memory issues and it's constantly restarting and bootlooping at an empty battery screen. Long story short, I want to buy a used Play. Mainly for two reasons. One, I want a working phone, and two, I love playing emulators but hate on-screen controls.
How are you folks liking the Play currently? How are the ICS ROMs running? How is emulator performance (PS1 specifically) on ICS ROMs? Does the gamepad work on ICS ROMs?
Thanks for your help; I really don't want to switch phones for something worse :/

I got my Xperia Play for 169euro in Vodafone IE, so i think it was the best value android phone ever! But i was worried becouse how come Vodafone reduced 500 euro price to 169, i thought it must be crappy phone! But after bootloader unlock and flashing .58 firmware + TrueAncestor Rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546134&highlight=true i think this phone is great! Works fast and smoth, battery for me is long enough too, around 3 days for some wifi use, text and calls. Im not playing so much but i used keypad on GTAIII or Shadowgun and it was good fun! I hate using touchscreen if I played some game ever More likely i flashed few Custom Roms but the best working ICS ROM for me is AokPlay! http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582118. So many options!!!!!! and theme manager and many many more! good luck!
I wouldn't because in terms of performance, it's not an upgrade from your old phone, just install cm9 or something and keep using your phone till your contracts up :O
I don´t know If I would buy it again, it´s the best phone ever, BUT, it´s the WORST built quality I´ve ever seem, and I´m serious, it´s the cheapest plastic on a mobile I´ve ever, after 1 week only some cracks appears on the plastic, it hapenned twice, when I first bought it, and after I sent it back and received a new one, they both had the same problem...
Really a shame, it´s the perfect smartphone, with the worst material, don´t know why Sony did that...
I have dropped mine a couple of times but there are no cracks at all...

I'm not looking for an "upgrade" to my old phone. My old phone doesn't work properly as I said in my OP. I already had ICS on it too. I'm looking for something to hold me over till December till my upgrade is due, and I love emulators but hate onscreen controls.
I just ordered one today so it should be here Tuesday/Wednesday. Thanks for all the input guys

(FYI) Inc 4g has s-off coming

Does this really belong here? prolly not
but i know a lot of inc2 users dont want to upgrade and loose unlimited data, and buying phones off contract can be crazy expensive to keep it
inc4g can typically be had for under $250 on ebay/cl, and now we have s-off coming (which being locked was a major point for many to avoid the phone)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1944157
basically thought id throw this out there, for those looking for a pretty good (i love it, others refuse to use anything smaller than 4.3 inch screen these days) 4g phone that can be had off contract used for just about upgrade pricing, can now not worry about having an unrootable/locked phone :good:
it will most likely be getting official jellybean at some point, which the rezound probably wont (nothing against rezound, but that could be a deal breaker for some)
Awesome, the not unlockable at all part was definitely what had me staying away from this, I knew it'd get done eventually though, thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for this nits. Are you on the dinc4g now? It's something to consider at that price. Is battery comparable to what we have now on dinc2? I may have to Google to see how big an improvement it is. I don't recall any of the tech specs for it.

yeah ive had the inc4g since launch...i was one of the fortunate ones (maybe 80-100?) that got dev unlocked through htcdev when the phone was unoffiicially supported for its first 10 days post launch...after that htc killed support to it...
theory was either a) verizon told them to (verizon claims our stock release software and unlock would cause issues...according to some support folk) or b) verizon just didnt want it unlockable
in any event, it ll work out in the end, cuz we probably wouldnt have soff if we had dev unlock as andy might not have had to reach out to the i/o guys if we still had unlock...and soff is so much better
but our sense4.1/android 4.0.4 update this week contained the exploit the guys needed to get temproot and soff the device supposedly :good:
as for the device?
battery life is incredible for a 4g device...on the stock battery and kernel i get 4 hours screen on time regularly (more than my inc2), in lte coverage the whole time...radios are very good
comparing it to the inc2, i guess form factor differences would be iphone 4s vs iphone5...the inc4g is narrower, but qhd res....i happen to like the screen a lot (even though some blogs killed it)....its very responsive, and smooth (even more so now on sense4.1 vs 4.0)
Keep us posted on the s-off. Thanks nit.
Thanks for the info Justin.
Well I will certainly be getting this phone for sure.

Since when did CM only support moto phones?? Only reason we aren't supported is because we don't have kernel source, we used to be for GB.

If anyone cares for another opinion, I can pretty much confirm Justin's take on the Dinc4. I had the Dinc2 for quite a while and absolutely loved it (now my dad loves it.) I was predisposed to the Dinc4 because the form factor of the Dinc2 was perfect. Once I noticed Justin had the phone and knew it would have great ROMs, that sealed the deal. My phone arrived THE DAY HTC removed it from their unlock tool :'(
So after 3 months with the Dinc4, I'm a little baffled by the amount of negative reviews on this phone. The screen is fantastic, the camera is outstanding, and the phone (stock) is smooth and responsive. The latest update made it even better. Battery life is great. If you like your Dinc2 as much as I did and aren't looking for a phablet size device, I think this is a great upgrade.
Cheers.
+1 I just got mine and I love it. Except for the lack of root, but like nits said that will be available in the near future. The form of the phone reminds me of the og inc and I loved that lil guy
if root ever becomes available for it, i might look around to trade my dinc2 + some cash maybe, for one. dinc2 is my first Android based phone and I really love it. I even liked it on stock, but root is just amazing lol
We're told root is coming soon
Once the s-off tool is released, i'm sure root will accompany root.

yeah, just fastboot a recovery and flash a superuser package and youre set (post s-off)
I think just maybe HTC threw the dinc4g a bone. They have supported the android underground in the past. They still would if very greedy wireless hadn't stepped in.
It makes sense to me, that they released an update knowing full well that we could exploit it.
Anyone else think the same?

I haven't experienced a single unwarranted app crash. The few times I did have a crash it was do to user error or restoring app data. Did you make sure that you wiped everything between roms? Any left over data can cause all sorts of issues down the line.

Rooting the Note 2 doesn't take away any functionality, if anything it adds extra functionality that wasn't there by default.
For example: Do you happen to use the multi-window capability that the device has? If you do, wouldn't it be even better if you could use any app you wanted and not just the predetermined choices? Most custom roms offer that to root users.
What apps are useless with root? How is the Spen useless?
The only time that my Spen has ever been useless is when I'm not using it. Even aosp roms that don't natively support it have apps that will bring most of, if not all of, it's practical applications back. And aosp is only an option and not a requirement to being rooted.
I apologize if this seems overly harsh or blunt but for someone who blatantly states "I have never rooted any of my device [e]ven my gn 2" I would refrain from giving out false information, and if you truly wish to help out someone with a question pertaining to things that you don't understand (as of yet) that you would research it to give your response a more meaningful bit of advice. They run on different network types, they have different software and some different hardware and entirely different model numbers. You want the gt-n7100/n7105 forums this is the sph-l900. If you use anything from this forum you run a real good risk of bricking your phone. Your total lack of knowledge between the device differences is one reason you definitely shouldn't be rooting your phone and most likely the reason you broke the last device you tried to root.

I never root by reading on xda I just Google for the roms or pda files for my model........ By the way what different hardware u got in ur model. My GN2 costed me rs. 40000=approx 930 USD(after conversion)..........Plz mention the hardware difference.... It's damn so disappointing If u got tegra enabled GN2 much cheaper than me......N 1 more thing I rooted my device

We have CDMA radios, LTE radios, no wireless charging, partitions are formatted differently for the different partitions required by the network differences and other country specific differences. The differences aren't huge but their enough to make them 2 entirely different devices that can't share software/firmware without modification if it can share them at all, some things arent interchangeable no matter how much you modify them, like modems.

You could unlock your device if its not already (not sure if international devices are tied to a specific carrier) and use any of our GSM networks like at&t or t-mobile or the numerous prepaid variants of the 2. That's the one nice thing about unlocked GSM devices all you have to do to change networks is switch out the SIM card.

We have lotzzz of carriers here and I have 5 sim cards. Sometimes, I use 2 cards simultaneously with a dual slot chip set does this means my model is unlocked?

Most likely, im not even sure foreign carriers lock their devices like they do here in the US. If you bought your phone full price then its more than likely unlocked, the more I think about it I'm almost positive most foreign carriers don't provide locked phones outside of a few UK and French carriers that sell carrier branded hardware.

I suggest you unroot your device. You seem you didnt get any advantage from rooting other than wasting your own time.
OP,
You have an international version so you're already unlocked. Is there any app that you need super user access for? Do you care to modify your phone, or are you happy with it the way it is? If you like the phone the way it is, leave it unrooted. You'll get software updates faster, won't void your warranty, and won't mess with something you may have no need for.
