Is anyone working in any of these for the Samsung Admire?
I have used every method possible and I'm still unable to obtain root... Will admit that this is a quick phone and a definite step-up from the Optimus V...

Same question, anyone working on the capability of flashing cwm or custom roms to the admire?
Is someone working on this by any chance? A few of us are looking to expand the Admire community.

PM me with the link. Or maybe the name of the site.
Thanks in advance.
on the admire-root-windows.zip i viewed the run.bat file in notepad. there's a line that needs to be changed.
open in notepad and change the line:
adb wait-for-defice
to
adb wait-for-device
the f should be a v lol. then file and save. it works.
actually just checked and even though the thing ran i haven't yet got it to work. i got a segmentation fault of the
adb shell "app_process /dev/null"
line and i dont this the superuser.apk installed right. when it loaded up the phone it asked me what to run it with. i had the option of: go launcher ex and launcher. neither worked. i read online just go to the market and find the app superuser. am trying that now.

sometimes you might have to run the program 3x or more so just be patient.
you will also have to install the superuser.apk & the busybox.apk
before you will be able to verify you are rooted with root checker.
I am also looking at getting one of these phones in the near future (Vitality through Cricket).
I'll be sure to update this thread with any customizations/themes/ROMs I make in the coming months.
Cheers.
Just picked up this phone today.
Flashed my own root to it -- OK
flashed CWM -- OK
Packaged up system image and xferred to PC for decompile -- OK
I'll be working on a custom ROM for this phone soon enough.
I hear theres a beta CM7 floating around the net somwhere, but its spotty at best.
I'll be making a ROM similar to my OpenPDP/Zio flavors located in my sig.
Look for it.
~Cheers.

Hi all,
Thanks to those who have helped along the way. None of this is my work, I am just putting it all in the one place for those who are in a similar situation as me - wanting to do get onto JG5, but not knowing how. Hopefully you can follow along!
This is the first time I've ever done anything to an Android phone, so consider me a noob! Here's all the files I used - multiupload.com/66CNCCTE4W (you will need to copy and paste the link into your address bar as I can't post links yet
Before you start, I did this on my Australian Samsung Galaxy S, so I'm not sure how different your model is!
Before starting, unzip the downloaded file above to your hard drive, and extract it to an easy to find folder - I'd suggest somewhere on your desktop.
1. Open the Odin3_v1.0 folder
2. Run Odin3_v1.0.exe program
3. Select the PIT, PDA, Phone and CSC files by clicking on the button, then locating the file in the I9000XWJG5 folder
a) PIT - s1_odin_20100512.pit
b) PDA - CODE_I9000XWJG5.tar
c) PHONE - MODEM_I9000XXJG1
d) CSC - CSC_I9000OXXJG4.tar
4. Remove the External MicroSD Card and the Sim Card
5. Turn the phone off
6. Get into download mode by pressing volume down + home key + power button
7. Connect the USB Cable from phone to computer
8. Wait for the drivers to be automatically installed.
9. Once drivers are fully installed, click START in Odin.
And that should be it!
P.s. I had to manually select my Network by going into Settings, Wireless and network, Mobile networks, and then selecting the Network (for me it was Optus). You will probably want to select Swype as the default input. To do this, press and hold a text input field, and press input and select Swype.
I hope this helps - please let me know how it goes for you!
*(Edited to include only flashing phone - I originally thought you had to root it first!)
You don't need to do step one and two.
lol,why bother about root ur device when u can straight away flash it like step 3??
Why do we need step one and two before ?
Since we are going to flash new rom and will need to do those again ????
Didnt work
So i tried to flash my SGS last night but it didnt turn out so well.
put all the bits and bobs in (.pit pda phone and modem) and then connected the phone in Download mode, seemed to connect to Odin, ID:COM 0:[COM20], clicked start, it seemed to be working so went to check on dinner and when i came back it didnt seem to be doing much, screen on the phone was blank and odin looked like it was tring to move across factoryfs.rfs, i look in the CODE file and saw that the factoryfs.rfs file was huge so thought id just leave it and wait. but nothing left it for 4-5 hrs then left the comp on all night when i cam back it was in the same spot but said removed and the phone was showing a phone then triangel with a ! inside the computer. so i unpluged it took out the bat and put it back tried turning it on, same thing, turned it off again and put into download mode seems to work but didnt get a chance to play with it at home, at work now and cant do it because it asks for admi privileges to install the drivers, so ill wait till im home again. anyone got ideas of what it might be? should i have connected to port 7?
Really? There ya go. Told you I was a noob! Sorry to confuse people. I have edited the original post so it only shows the flashing part.
#4 is not needed.
BTW: your tutorial is already stickied in the big faq (post 2).
I think alot of noobs will find this very useful. It's easier to follow for those who are flashing for the first time, i'm sure others wil appreciate your effort.

Hey Zac,
Don't worry if the steps are already in post # 2. I find yours better and more direct. More importantly, your phone is also from Australia, same as mine.
Thank you for taking the trouble to post this. I've been helped. I'm a bigger noob I guess
The only problem is that I don't seem to be able to download it. It stops after a few bytes. Know of any alternative links?
Edit: On the other hand, after going through some of the comments on threads related to JG5, all the problems are still there, so I don't see any real advantage over JG3. Will stick to this, since I'm about to get a replacement for my phone soon.
Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!! Thank you!!
I really want to thank you 4 this!! Damn you're the man!! This fixed my broked SGS immediately!! I can't thank you enough my best friend 4 ever!!
How do i get Superuser in to this?? And can i use Lagfix 2.0 too?? Please answer to me..i'm so so so damn gr8ful about all your hard work! Do i have to root my SGS again and where i can find the latest file update.zip which works with this your version?? I have already update.zip but it's kinda old file though.

LauncherPro problems
Hiya!!
U have any idea when i installed this jg5 my launcherpro won't work anymore at all, it just force closes all the time and i can't open my phone at all?? Why this is happening??
How do install this but still use LauncherPro??
( Though it works when i install it but immeadiately when i try ty restart my LauncherPro it starts to force close 24/7)
When i did a factory reset it didn't make it completely, it left something in in phone about this jg5...maybe that's why my LP is not working anymore...
Sorry but i'm a noob so don't judge me, i have a question now, where i can get "Stock 2.1 Eclair"?? I have now FRF91.372 2.2 in my phone it works like ****!! I don't even get LauncherPro work without continious force closes...i want that firmware where LP works without any force closes!!
Please help a noob...please, now i know how to use Odin, cause i have flashed already 3 times. But all the firmwares what i've tried have sucked.
PS: Is there any way i can do a raw clean for my SGS before install new firwmare, i ask cause i want to SGS completely empty before i install new firmware, is this possible?? I heard that if you swype your SGS empty new firmware will work much better...but this is just a rumour though

All the ROMs that are released by Samsung themselves are stock ROMs, e.g. JG5 is a Stock Eclair 2.1 ROM.
Hello,
I know nothing about rooting so I may be using the wrong terms. I've read a number of people are having issues with their phones after they've rooted or changed to rom or something. I've also read you can run stock(?) but be rooted (or something like that) so you won't have any issues.
Is there a way to give root access without really changing anything about your phone other than enabling tethering? I really only want to enabling tethering. Oh and the sonicwall client says the phone must be rooted or have root access or something before I can run it.
Yeah that can be done, but once you're rooted, you'll end up flashing roms lol

Thanks. If anyone has been flashing or rooting on Samsung Androids for a while, what do you think the chance is that I'll be able to do the over the air update for this phone when it comes out if I do root it?

Thanks. I appreciate you taking the time to reply. To be honest I really don't know what you said though. I'm sure it is simple and obvious but I don't know squat about modifying my android phone so I'm not sure what you said really means.
Anyone know if there are any videos I can follow along to get to where I need to be. I think if someone tries to explain it to me in text I'll get lost and people will get frustrated with my lack of android knowledge.

Here's what you will be doing:
1) Use "Odin" method to flash kernel+cwm recovery (.tar file) from your computer to the phone.
2) Use recovery to flash su.zip from the phone itself.
3) Same as 1 but stock kernel+recovery.
Here's how to do it:
1) Install Samsung Kies software on your computer. It installs usb drivers necessary to communicate to the phone.
2) Install odin software on your computer. Download .tar file for kernel+cwm.
3) Open odin, follow directions in the first thread to point to the .tar file you download from the same thread.
4) Shut down phone. Use key combination to reboot the phone into "download mode". Connect phone to computer with usb cable. Use odin on computer to commence flash of .tar file. Phone will reboot.
5) Download su.zip from the first thread. Place it on usb storage of the phone.
6) Shut down phone again. Hold down Volume Up and power buttons until you see orange menu. That's CWM recovery.
5) Choose install .zip from sdcard (it really installs from usb storage, not from sdcard). Choose select zip on sd card. Navigate to su.zip, confirm.
Then use the menus to go back and reboot the phone.
6) Download stock kernel+recovery from second thread. Start from step 3 above to flash the stock .tar file.
EDIT: Oh yeah, there's a video in the first thread. Not sure how useful it is though.
EDIT2: The video is old. It has conflicting information with the stuff in the first thread. Use it very cautiously, use the links to download from the first thread. You also don't need .pit file. Only .tar files.
EDIT3: these are the file links:
Kies: link
odin: http://forums.acsyndicate.net/ACS/Odin3 v1.85.zip
CWM+kernel .tar: http://forums.acsyndicate.net/ACS/acs-eb30-clockwork-epic-touch-4g-sep-20-4-00-pm.tar
su.zip: http://www.multiupload.com/TD3X6TM9O1
stock .tar: http://www.inspiringandroid.com/mirrors/devices/epic4gtouch/kernels/acs-eg30-stock-kernel-pulled.tar
Thanks! I'll give it a try.
I installed KIES it says "reconnect the device in Samsung Kies (PC Studio) mode. Current connection mode not supported by Kies. I'm not sure how to connect it in Samsung Kies mode.
Odin 1.85 shows it connected as ID0 (com5)
I only have auto reboot selected and the check for PDA as well as the acs-eb30 ewm file.
The phone says downloading but the first box in odin says fail.
Not sure if it is safe to reboot phone.
To answer a question you asked earlier, if you root and take an OTA update the chances are very good you'll lose root. If you're rooted and want to stay that way, wait until devs work with the update and come up with a "root-safe" version.

You don't need to run kies to use Odin. Kies is only installed for usb drivers.
I'm not sure what would happen if you had both running at the same time.
If you want to use Kies later, you would need to uncheck USB Debugging on the phone in Settings/Applications/Development.
The phone says "downloading" regardless of whether it is flashing the kernel or not. Did you follow the instructions from the first thread?
4. Open Odin3 V1.85 and on the left side ONLY have AUTO reboot checked (VERY IMPORTANT)
6. Check the PDA slot and then press the PDA button and navigate to the Tar file and select it
7. Now power off your Epic Touch.
8. Once fully powered off, press and hold volume down, home key, and power button at the SAME time.*This will take you into Odin mode.
9. Plug your phone into your PC.
10. You should see COM# (the number doesn't matter) in the ID:COM box
11. Press start and let it run through the process!*

There's a step missing, but I suppose they didn't mention it since it's fairly obvious. I don't know if it matters...
The step is 8a) When you see odin prompt to continue, confirm to enter odin mode.
Also make sure that those .tar files downloaded correctly.
Thanks - you nailed it. If you have kies running you can't get odin to update the phone. My phone is all updated - ran all the steps.
Do I use a built in app on it for tethering or add an app?

I think you need Wifi Tether. Search for it, it's gonna be on code.google.com. I myself don't use it, but I heard it works pretty much out of the box w/o tweaking.

My sonicwall client works great with root access. I haven't been able to get the wifi tether to work yet. I can't find the device if I enable security. I can't seem to find the right BT drivers when my computer finds it via BT. If I disable security I can findi it via wifi but with our without acccess control disabled I can't actually complete the wifi connection.
Update - I did get it to connect via tether after all. I hadn't ever had an issue connecting to about 20 wireless networks with my laptop but I did notice a 5002 event churning away in the event viewer when I tried to connect. I updated my wireless drivers and I'm all set!
Thanks for all the help and patience!!!
People have requested that the initial thread from the general section be cleaned up into a step by step, so here goes. This is ONLY FOR HONEYCOMB 3.2 for the SGH-i957.
NEXT WARNING: USE OF ODIN CAN DAMAGE YOUR PHONE IF USED INCORRECTLY. WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE DUE TO FOLLOWING THESE INSTRUCTIONS. PROCEED WITH CAUTION.
Method 1
This is for people who want to keep the stock kernel. This will not trip the flash counter.
1. Download and Install the Samsung Drivers for your device. Install Kies, or the latest mobile drivers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
2. Download CWM Recovery (courtesy of utkanos)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9459955/recovery/testing/SGHI957/v2/CWMR5x_i957_recovery.tar.md5
2. Download Odin 1.85
http://www.mediafire.com/?cghfk06lcfiwi29
3. Open Odin 1.85 as administrator
4. Place the CWMR.tar file in the PDA slot. (Make sure you do not have any boxes in the options panel checked besides the ones that were checked when opening the program - should only be auto reboot and f.reset time)
5. Place the tablet in download mode. Hold vol up + vol down and hold power until the device powers on into download mode. Hit volume up to proceed after the warning screen
6. Plug the tablet into the computer on a main usb slot and it will be detected by Odin in one of the ID:COM slots (will appear as yellow)
7. Hit Start - cwm recovery should will be flashed to the tablet. Tablet will restart.
8. Download superuser.zip from the skyrocket forums (courtesy Copperhed)
http://www.mediafire.com/?4h8cmh287mcxuf8
9. Copy superuser.zip to the tablet
10. Reboot into recovery (Power + Volume Up)
11. Navigate to 'Install zip from SD card' and select 'superuser.zip'. You will get an SD Card error when it is done installing, this is normal.
You are now rooted with stock kernel.
Method 2
This is Da_G's work. This will trip your flash counter.
Steps:
1. Download and Install the Samsung Drivers for your device. Install Kies, or the latest mobile drivers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
2. Download Da_G's modded kernel

2. Download Odin 1.85
http://www.mediafire.com/?cghfk06lcfiwi29
3. Open Odin 1.85 as administrator
4. Place the modded kernel .tar file in the PDA slot.
7. Hit Start - the modded kernel should will be flashed to the tablet. Tablet will restart.
8. Go into market and download the Superuser App.
Optional - you can flash the stock kernel back using steps 3-7 above.

Thanks Orlando we needed do that as there have been an increasing amount of people asking "how do I ". By the way if you type Odin 1.85 into Google it will come up with the first result being a link to a direct download from XDA. This makes it easier and faster to download because you get an instant file save dialog.

If you have your phone synced maybe it restored superuser.

Shame I didn't back up my Bell ROM. Bell doesn't disable the built in hotspot functionality.
Good news is, there are several international versions of the Tab 8.9 LTE about to hit the ground in Asia and Europe (along with another Canadian carrier). That means that the chances of getting a good "generic" ROM leaked are looking pretty good. Check with Samfirmware on a regular basis.

Good news is, there are several international versions of the Tab 8.9 LTE about to hit the ground in Asia and Europe (along with another Canadian carrier). That means that the chances of getting a good "generic" ROM leaked are looking pretty good. Check with Samfirmware on a regular basis.

there are a few guys who have bell who may have just flashed the kernel and not the ATT stock first. Maybe they can do a system dump?
Hi guys!
Is it possible to reset the Flash counter in this Tab using a JIG ?
I have a microUSB JIG I bought for my SGS2.
Can I use it also for the Tab...?
I guess I can buy a standard USB to microUSB converter,
and connect it to the Tab's original USB cable.
The question is if those are the same pins in the Tab's connector as on the USB JIG,
Or the Tab needs different pins to be connected (with the 300 Kohm resistor)...
Newer bootloaders from Samsung are jig-proof. No resetting the counter at the moment.
Does Root remove the Bell SIM lock?
Or another way of asking, is there a way to remove the SIM lock without getting an unlock code?

You'll need to get a code the conventional way.
So far it looks like Samsung finally caught on (or rather, finally cared, or rather the carriers made them care) that it was stupid easy for the end user to unlock a Galaxy device.

Do you know any legit place or sites to get the code?
As I wrote the guide I realized the files, scripts, and images are scattered through multiple threads, which makes finding what you need difficult, even from a main thread (the guide for example). This was compounded even more when I was writing the CM9 Install Guide for the CyanogenMod Wiki and listed the commands themselves, it became huge, intimidating, and looks extremely daunting, I can only imagine what a new flasher must think seeing it! And and so I decided perhaps I can fix this, and with that I present to you...
The A100 Flashing Toolkit!
What is it?
A single zip file that, when unzipped, contains EVERYTHING you need, ADB, fastboot, scripts, CWM recovery image, everything you need to take your stock ICS A100 through rooting, unlocking the bootloader, and flashing CWM recovery (twrp coming soon)!
How is it used?
Its a set of 6 PC scripts, 3 for windows users (.bat) and 3 for linux users (.sh). Run in order from the same folder, and you can just click and run, reboot, click and run, reboot, click and run, install custom rom, done!
You MUST already be on ICS! This is not for HC, if you are on HC update to ICS FIRST!
Instructions
Make sure you are on ICS! Read the bold red letters above! You have been warned! You should already have installed the Acer USB drivers for ADB to work.
Ok, now you're on ICS....right?
Download and unzip the file to whatever folder you can remember, for example c:\acer or ~/acer.
Open your file manager of choice and browse on over to where you unzipped the files, and get ready.
Windows
Right click on A100-root-win.bat and select Run as Adminitrator.
Once that is finished, let your tablet reboot.
Once it's rebooted, right click on A100-unlock-win.bat and select Run as Administrator.
Once this finishes, let the tablet reboot again (the script will tell you what's happening)
Once it's rebooted, right click on A100-recovery-win.bat and select Run as Administrator.
Allow it to finish, it'll reboot a couple times.
Half the time it reboots into recovery, other reboots into system, not sure why it happens.
If it boots into recovery, go ahead and make a full backup, might as well.
If it boots into system, reboot into recovery and make a full backup, might as well.
At this point, you can now wipe and install a custom ROM, see the A100 Guide in General for ROMs and instructions on this.
Linux
Execute A100-root-linux.sh and allow it to run.
Once that is finished, allow tablet to reboot.
Exectute A100-unlock-linux.sh and allow it to run.
Let the tablet reboot
Execute A100-recovery-linux.sh and allow it to run.
It'll either reboot into recovery, or system, it does one or the other for some reason.
If rebooted into recovery, make a full backup.
If rebooted into system, reboot into recovery and make a full backup.
Wipe and install a new custom ROM, see the A100 Guide in General for ROMs and instructions on this.
How to boot into recovery
There's a few ways, 1 way is an app like quick boot, you can use adb by typing adb reboot recovery or you can do it manually.
Power off the tablet.
Press and hold the volume - button, closest to power and lock switch.
Holding volume - press and hold Power.
Hold until the screen says Booting recovery kernel then let go.
You should be in recovery, either CWM, TWRP, or stock, whatever you have installed.
As always I am open to suggestions, advice, or reports! Feel free to post up or PM me with any issues, questions, bugs, or ideas!
Download
A100 Flash Toolkit 1.1 7-16-12
Now featuring the correct bootloader!
Thanks to smokku for pointing this out.
Who do we thank for this package?
ZeroNull: Alot of the scripting is based on his work, and borrows his ADB and fastboot executables.
ptesmoke: Uses his CWM recovery.img file
CyanogenMod Iconia Team: For allowing me the chance to write for the Wiki, and realizing this NEEDED to be done.
Anyone else I'm forgetting, I'm sorry I will add you as soon as I remember (feel free to drop me a note!)
Sounds great, many thanks.
Thanks for all you hard work and patience.

After several hours trying, having trouble with some of the batch files. Appears some file names called in .bat different than actual file names, also had to invoke adb from Command prompt window, wouldn't work from windows file manager. Followed instructions but process is breaking down in second batch file. After correcting file names, batch file runs but recovery.img is failing. Need help figuring this out.

Oh wow OK I'll take a look I must have mixed everything up. My desktop is littered with files from all these projects. I'm sorry about that I should have double checked everything before I uploaded it. If the called files are different then the scripts it must be the old version mixed with new scripts or something. I should have it squared away sometime tonight/tomorrow morning.
Edit: I'm assuming by saying command prompt you use windows, the a100-root-win.bat file looks fine, was this one giving any issues?
I'm checking the second and third now for whatever is going on.

You have to be FAST when it gets there, it times out in like half a second it seems.
When you run it, have the tab in your hand, fingers on volume - and volume + (volume - is next to the lock switch). As soon as you see the screen change, hit volume - then volume +. It takes a few tries usually. It'll just sit there until you reboot afterwards.
Hi, I was wondering, since I just rooted yesterday (got this tab last friday) should I skip the script for rooting and simply run the other two or do I have to run the root script anyways? by the way Im having some real weak reception from this tablet, like 2 bars only and thats when standing about 5 feet from the router, Im willing to follow this procedure in order to try one of the custom roms to see if the wifi weak signal goes away (Ive tried most of the things there are to attemp to fix this, including messing around with my router) do you know if any one has successfully fixed this with a custom rom? if so which one? thanks in advance and sorry for (kinda) hiijacking the thread.

Congrats on the purchase and welcome! You can skip over rooting if you already have rooted ICS. Not HC.
The weak wifi is pretty common, mine is weaker then any other devices I have, usually by a bar or 2. Custom roms won't fix it, I think they just have the power turned down on it. Its also possible there is a bad connection to the antenna internally. If you're very unhappy stop Modding now and return to stock and exchange for another unit or brand.
Any other questions feel free to ask.

thanks for your fast reply, I was contemplating the idea of flashing some custom rom as a last resort before either opening up the tab's case to check for myself that everything was "wired right" as Im not too happy with the idea of sending this off to acer's as I live in the Dominican Republic and I'd hate to pay the overpriced shipping fee if it is something that I can fix by myself, but on the other hand I might as well break something new instead of fixing the wifi anthena, so I guess I'll have to claim the warranty and hope the wont send me another faulty unit (I've read somewhere some people had issues with the replacement units). Such a great little device cursed with bad QA. anyways, if I hard reset the tab it'll be back to stock right? (as of now the tab is running stock os with root access and the modified wpa_wifi apliance to gain access to adhoc networks) Thanks

I'm not sure, but I don't think resetting these puts them back to 100% if rooted, the root stays since it sits in /system. You'll have to manually remove SU then reset to get rid of the root, I think. Other option is restore through the update.zip method which should wipe /system. You could try a hard reset and see if it removes SU or not, it might.

Not quite clear on what you're asking, but as far as I know it should work on any version bootloader unless they changed it on some update, which wouldn't surprise me.
What is the whole message, and when is it occuring?
I have the latest ICS version availble thru OTA.
Or i´m not being fast enough?
Already tried a million times the Volume - and Volume +.
Guetting this message:
"Bootloader V0.03.11-ICS Starting fastboot usb download protocol"
Should get the unlocked mode right?

Ok if you don't get the new screen with two icons, then it isn't unlocking yet. It seems the script is hanging before passing the next step.
When it gets to that screen again, type
fastboot oem unlock
as soon as you hit enter, get ready for that volume down then up, so maybe have it in your lap with your fingers on the volume rocker.
I'll look at the script again to see why it's hanging, or if it isn't hanging, why it's shooting past that point without waiting.
Forgot to say i´m using the windows version.
Thanks

The issue is that you included the A100 bootloader in the archive with a script to write it.
A100 bootloader (version 0.03.11-ICS) is not unlockable.
You need to write A200 bootloader (version 0.03.06-ICS) to your device, to have the unlocking option.
You know you have unlockable bootloader when you see green ACER logo in the bottom-right side of the screen instead white one in the center.
The script and blob you included is used to restore the original A100 (not unlockable) bootloader.
For the ones looking for the unlockable bootloader, it's here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1557445

It's just labeled a100, it isn't the actual a100 blob. But go ahead and use that link until I get the chance to go back through it, I'm obviously messing it all up somewhere, I may have used the a100 blob and gotten it mixed up with the a200 blob when I was renaming and shifting things around. I'll pull the download for now until I get the chance to get it all sorted out, sorry guys.
Edit OK its back up with the proper boot loader for unlocking. I can't believe I did that. Huge thanks to smokku for pointing that out!
No worries.
And yeah, you have to be quick when it asks to toggle unlock, like half a second quick.
Yeah I'm a bit confused at the methods. One guide tells you to use the official website, other threads take you to that same one. I havent had an Xperia Play since late 2012 - early 2013 and I found this one back in my old stuff. Sony website tells you to check with the dialer and see if it says yours is allowed to be unlocked. Mine has NOTHING. So what I'm supposed to suffer about 3-4 years later in the future because Verizon still decides they want to continue hiding whatever secrets this device packs?
I'm trying to experiment with custom roms. Stock is boring and would also love to root (which I can't because I'm on 2.3.4 since I'm an idiot).
We didn't even know about jellybean when I first had this thing. Now we have KitKat which is also aimed and claimed to run on a minimum of 512mb ram.
Any help?

Hi Crossvxm,
You can definitely unlock the bootloader on your phone. The Verizon Xperia Play doesn't show the bootloader unlock status in the service menu, but it's been confirmed in lots of other posts where R800x owners have unlocked their bootloaders. I have also done it personally with the Sony Official method. Here's the link to the Sony website if you want to give it a go: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/
You can also root your R800x while it's still on 2.3.4 using the Eroot method. See this thread for more information on Eroot: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2240285. Please make sure to hit the thanks button for Nabeel, wym986, Vokal1992, and any others who helped bring this root method to us. The direct download link for the Eroot version that I have used is: https://www.dropbox.com/s/jnwl5r3fnsssbuu/Eroot_V1.3.4.exe. If you want to check the MD5 checksum after downloading it, it should be: 459d8bdda203a5f5e9d28231fa6df6b0
Here are some instructions that I made for my friend to help him root his R800x, but the thread mentioned above also has instructions...
-Eroot Instructions-
1. Disable the anti-virus software on your computer to prevent it from stopping the root exploit
2. Go to your phone Settings/ Applications/Developer Options and Make USB Debugging is enabled. (I don't know if it's necessary, but I also check the box to allow Unknown Sources).
3. Plug your phone into the computer with a USB cable and make sure your phone is recognized by the computer before proceeding
4. Right click on the Eroot application and run it as Administrator
5. Eroot should recognize that your phone is connected and after a brief moment, it should prompt you to click on a green “Root” button. Click that button and it will show steps 1-4. Once it completes its process, your phone should be rooted with the Superuser app installed.
(PS: After it roots the phone, it will turn off Wifi. Just go back into your phone's settings and toggle the Wifi back on to get it working again).
I had some trouble getting the Superuser binaries to update after completing the above steps... so I used Titanium Backup Pro to wipe data/clear cache and uninstall the Superuser app. I then went to the Play store and reinstalled it. (This is the Superuser version I am using and it works fine: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.koushikdutta.superuser&hl=en ).
Good luck.

Cool man. I hope you can get the bootloader unlocked and get rooted so you can experiment with some of the newer ROM'S. I recently bought my Xperia Play really cheap off eBay and I'm having fun playing with it. I'm really only using it as a gaming device because I have a rooted/ROM'ed Samsung Note 2 as my daily driver.
Let us know how things turn out.

It worked, my bootloader seems to have successfully unlocked. I also used the root tool you mentioned and in about 3 tries it actually rooted it! And BTW, i found this Xperia Play in a box from when I moved to NYC and i forgot all about it. I also use it for games that cant be playes on a touchscreen like Megaman X4 and Super Mario World. But I use my G2 for everything else. Its just hard to run and jump on Mario with touchscreen buttons when you have to use your entire thumb for both of those and your other thumb to move.
Now my question is, how do i install a custom recovery? I used the X-Parted apk and a CWM installer apk from the same dev, and it seems to flash the recovery, but when i click for it to reboot into recovery the device reboots normally. Also, when I try to manually reboot it into the custom recovery, it just powers off after the android symbol and restarts normally. Has me stumped as to why.

Cool man. That's great that you can ressurect your Xperia Play and enjoy using it again. I'm having a blast with using emulators. My friend recently introduced me to Quake and I've been playing it a lot lately. (If you have any interest in Quake, I just started a thread in the Theme and Apps section with instructions on how to get it running on the Xperia Play using the FTEDroid port and Gamekeyboard+, which allows you play it with the phone's hard key controllers). .
Anyway... I also had trouble using the Xparts app to install CWM. I found another thread that provides a command script to install it, and it's worked perfectly for me every time.
Here are some instructions that I typed up a while back when I was helping my friend root his R800x... The credit for this should go to the original poster in the thread and to all of the people who helped develop the CWM .
--------------------------------------------
INSTALL INSTRUCTIONS FOR CWM
**I believe that around 2 MB of Internal Storage is needed to install this CWM version on the Xperia Play
1. Go to this thread ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390771 ) to find and download the file "CWM-Install.rar"
2. Unzip the contents of the downloaded package into a file folder where you can find it later
3. Make sure USB debugging is enabled on your phone and plug your rooted R800x into the computer via USB cable
3. Navigate to the folder on your computer where you unzipped the .rar file. (Per the above thread's instructions, you need to run the command script for "install-cwm1.cmd." You can do this by locating that file and double clicking on it. This should start a command terminal window to install CWM...just follow the prompts in the command terminal and you should have CWM installed on your phone
**In order to boot into the CWM Recovery on the Stock Kernel, you need to press the phone's Power Button and then repeatedly tap the Volume Down button as it boots up. Once you are in the CWM recovery, use the Volume keys to navigate up and down, the Home key to select, the Back key to return to the previous menu.

Worked 100%! I owe you big time! I am now running Super Jellybean 8.0 along with Turbo Kernel and honestly the performance on this rom alone is "godly!" I first tried Racing Speed rom but reading on the features of Super JellyBean made me want to try it out. Although the touchpad support breaks (no more Mario 64...) its overall performance makes up for the loss. Either way i do use the buttons more anyways on ps1 and snes games.
I now feel like the Xperia Play "caught up" with my other devices, it was the only Gingerbread device i have touched in a year.
I would love to see the KitKat rom thats currently a work in progress someday work completely.
Since KK was said to be able to run on 512mb ram, i think it would further improve this device's potential.
That's good to hear you're rooted and unlocked and glad I could help. I know that I found it frustrating when I was trying to figure out how to root and unlock the bootloader for our Verizon version of this phone. I kept reading that you couldn't root it on build 2.3.4, but finally stumbled onto Eroot. It seems there's not a lot of Verizon R800x users in the Xperia Play threads... so we got to stick together, lol.
