Hey everyone. I am running savagedzen 2.2.1 (CFS). Up until about a week ago it was running fantastic. However, it recently has started to give me tons of SDcard errors, but they're intermittant. For example when trying to run spotify, i'll get errors that the SDcard isn't currently accessible when the phone has been running a little while; but then I'll be able to open fpse and play an iso off of the sdcard just fine. Then i'll try to open a game in my snes emulator and it won't be able to open the save file even though the game works fine.
Weird stuff.
As of today I'm copying everything off and reformatting. Any suggestions on tools, utils, or some sort of fsck utility for the memory card to make sure its working ok? None of the tools seem to indicate that there is any problem. I'm still using the stock memory card so I may look into grabbing a class 10 16GB card if the time has come for a replacement.

reformatting is the first thing i would try.
you can also check to make sure the SD card is properly seated. perhaps it may have a loose/intermittent electrical connection.
i am not sure what else you can do.
Well, just copied everything off, and have formatted from recovery. Now I'm copying everything back - hopefully the wonkiness goes away.
Also deleted the /sdcard/android folder. Here's hoping that doesn't jack too much up. Worst case scenario is I install a new rom :X
Ok this is getting weirder.
When I try to format the disk (via recovery->wipe), it acts like it is formatting. However when i go into /sdcard, there are all my files.
I put the card in a sdcard reader, and opened it in windows - all the files are there. I am manually deleting them, and getting no errors. However when I open back up the card, all of my files are still there.
I'm about to try using dd and zeroing out the card - not sure what else to do. I don't think its write protection because there is no error when I attempt to delete a file. In explorer it even shows that the file was deleted. But if I unmount/remount the card... there it is again.
Thinking this may be a sign to get a new card.
Well, I'm about to declare the sdcard as shot.
Code:
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/mmcblk0
runs, and finishes with no issue. Then, wiped the card via Amon RA Recovery. Results? Files still present on the SD-Card.
The crazy thing is that I can add new files to the card, but I can't delete anything. If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it. Otherwise, I'm picking up a 16GB class 10 card on my way home from work.

Tried it earlier; format fails with an unknown error. mkfs.vfat appears to succeed, but then the files are still there.
Edit:
Just had a coworker attempt to format the disk using mac diskutils - same thing. Showed a successful format, and it looked like it was blank. But then after unmounting/remounting, there were my files!
Looks like I'll be picking up a new card. In the meantime I'll keep this one around as my indestructable backup copy

hey everyone..
i recently got my hero an have been upgrading roms back an forth, but each time i wipe to update the rom i lose all my apps.. i was wondering if anyone could please help me get app2sd installed or show me a step by step process for it.. itd help heaps an be greatly appreciated!!
thanks in advance,

I need help for this altso, dont realy understand how this works?

How to install apps from MARKET to SD card, so we dont have to reinstall them each flashing
you need root! and a custom rom (MCR2.2 or 2.3 are my faves) these have apps2sd built in.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552591
p.s your thread should be in Q&A NOT the Dev section
problem
hi. i've partitioned my sd card as per the instructions on this website. prior to that, i'd installed the modaco rom version 2.2, which is meant to have apps2sd on it.
i thought that after partitioning my sd card my apps would automaticaaly get transferred to the sd card. but that doesn't seem to have happened. how do i go about making that happened. i don't want to reinstall the modaco rom, it should happen already shouldn't it?
also, where exactly is apps2sd on the modaco rom? i can't find it.
try booting your phone without the SD card in....are your apps still there?
apps2sd is built in to the rom, you dont need to run anything. It does it all by itself in the background.
thanks. I'll try that tomorrow. Before I do, just one other query. I thought that after partitioning the sd card, everything on it would get wiped. But the same folders (ther were only 2 before i partitioned it) are still there with the files in them!
which makes me think, did i successfully partition the card? there's no doubt that when i typed 'print' in the adb shell/ gparted after the partitioning process it gave a list of 3 partitions in the sd card. I basically followed the instructions to the letter. I won't be in a position to check again until tomorrow.
Just to be clear before I do something I may or may not regret, to get apps installed on the sd card, I need to partition it first, correct? Once it has been partitioned correctly, any app installations I do, say via the market, should go straight to the sd card? I'm running MCRv2.2.
Yes partition your card first. (FAT first, then EXT3 second)
they usually go to the SD card after a reboot i think.
AFAIK it is a script that is run during startup.
thanks alot for that.. i done a bit more research an have it all sorted.. cheers.. brett
good news. happy to help
as suggested earlier on this thread, i rebooted my phone without the sd card, and sure enough, all my applications/ widgets could not be loaded (except those that were already on the modaco 2.2 rom). rebooting again with the sd card in place, and everything is back to normal.
however, when looking on the sd card with astro file manager, i can't see a list of the applications anywhere. also, after connecting my phone to the computer, and then looking under 'removable disc' on my pc, i can't see the list of apps on my sd card then either.
so i guess what i'm asking is, how do you definitely know that apps2sd has kicked in. i've read on this and other forums that people have checked on their sd card and seen their list of applications. how does one do that? is what i've done above, namely booting my phone without the sd card in place and demonstrating that the downloaded apps don't work, enough proof that apps2sd has worked properly on my phone?

You can't see them in /sdcard because that is your FAT32 partition of the card.
Apps2SD works by mounting an ext3 partition from your card, it is mounted to /system/sd/ normally I think. Have a look there with your filemanager.
The reason for having a separate partition for it is that Android requires the ability to set access rights and ownership to files for it work, and FAT32 does not support this.
if you load a linux live cd (i use ubuntu) and plug in your card reader, or mount your hero, you will see the two partitions (or 3 if you use swap).
Windows can't see ext3 partitions, but linux can, cos its great
yeah i had a look using astro file manager and went into system/sd but nothing is listed there.
anyway, now i have a whole new bizarre problem. most of my apps force close when i try to use them! for example, i open taskiller, and its fine while its running, but as soon as i select something to kill, a message pops up saying it has to force close. same with advanced task manager, shopsavvy, shazam, flixster movies and many others. i've turned my phone off and on, and rebooted a couple of times to no avail. phone calls and internet access still works fine.
all this has started since i tried booting my phone without the sd card. i've taken it out again and tried again, but still same problem. weird!
ok problem above solved! i uninstalled then reinstalled the applications, and then they work.
thanks for all your help guys.
i used to get that on my g1...un-install and re-install always solved it for me too!
happy hero'ing!
I am glad that there is a ROM that support A2SD, but i prefer to run the generic one, and if possible is there a code to make my generic pre-rooted rom A2SD abled?

Hi!
I tried searching the forums for the problem but couldnt find anything related to mine!
I have a problem where the phone suddenly just says "No write access to file" when i try listening to stuff on spotify, take pictures etc... Yet i can access the SD on ASTRO.
Has anyone else noticed this one? Any tips? Rebooting the phone fixes the issue for a while.
Same issue here. I found in other android related forums a lot of people complaining about this as well - seams there's no solution yet (reboot helps in my case - format the card didn't). Some people reported that a change of the sdcard hasn't solved anything. I guess we have to replace the device.

Don't give up yet, if you are running a task killer, remove it and try without it.
As I said on the other thread, I removed it and I'm now testing it. Atleast now it seems to sync Spotify's offline playlists without errors..

I have no task killer running but still the above mentioned issue. I also removed the sd-card and put it back in several times. I cleaned carefully the contacts of the sdcard, removed ALL apps but it still happens every other day.
And no, the desire wasn't plugged into the pc via USB. m(
i had the similar kind of issue. when I switch on the phone from standby mode.. sometimes it says "cannot backup the phone data.. SD card not accessble". When I opened the Estronge File manager I can see no files under the SDcard..
This problem has started to me only after I have installed ebuddy and started using it. Then I have uninstalled the ebuddy and till now i did not get this problem again (3days tested after uninstall)
You can give a try by uninstall any recently installed apps.. my doubt is some apps are creating this issue on slow writting SD cards (my Sd card is Class 2)..

Been there, done that! *sigh* It happens also with no apps installed (plain stock)
Also just happened to me after installing a Touchdown update - camera was reporting no access to SD card and Astro (file navigator) was showing some weird behaviour (opening the 'download' folder took me back to the home screen)
A reboot appears to have solved it but a bit worrying
Not sure if this is 100% related, but I'll include it here. This didn't happen to me at the start but has started happening in the last few days.
I've had my phone set up to connect by default as a disk drive without asking me. Now when I connect to my computer, I get the message on my computer that there is something wrong with the drive and it needs to be scanned and corrected. I don't because I don't always trust Windows auto corrective measures, you can't always go back.
The problem really kicks in when I connect my Desire to the computer and it (the computer) says card needs to be formatted. As soon as I get this message, I know it's all over. I can't access the SD card on computer or from the phone. When I disconnect, the phone says the SD card is empty, and I get the small SD card with question mark up in the top right of the notification bar.
My system is running Win 7 x64.
I get the same problem every other day with the "cannot backup the phone data.. SD card not accessble". I also got an error message when trying to download an email attachment saying that there was no storage space but Astro shows around 6gb free on the sd!

you have another sdcard than the stock SanDisk 4GB card, I guess? If so, could you tell us what sdcard you are running?
I have had the same problem as reported above (backup error) recently. A reboot solves it, but not permantely.. (I also had a problem where the home screen froze, but the lockscreen worked fine. I guess it could be related but I don't know...)
It's a bit annoying with these kind of problems..

It just happen again after I replayed to a text messages..
I started my terminal emulator and checked if the sd card was still mounted (which it appeared to be). But noticed that it's set to remount as read only on errors (Not saying it's the problem, just that it may be the cause of the symptoms..)
Then I checked the rights (ls -l -d /sdcard) It was set to ---rwxr-x (owner: system, group: sdcard_rw) = Owner has no rights, group has full right and others read & execute only..
Also one thing I noticed was that the date was set to 1970-01-01 01:00 (aka start of "unix-time"). That can happen, but it still seemed a bit strange..
BUT: Apparently, that is the way it's "supposed to be", as after a reboot it says the same..
This was just an update on my experience with this error, and what I've tried (so far)..
Stock Rom and card and it is happening to me periodically.

Update: A working solution?
I read on another forum where they (Vodaphone actually) recommended that you reformat the card if you have this sort of problems... So I thought: What a heck.. It can't become worse..
These is the steps that I did (pretty straightforward..) and it works (for about two days now without any big problems..)
Backup the card
You probably don't want to do that using Windows... (You can download free Linux Live-CDs from Ubuntu.com or other places)
Why?? For me, and I don't doubt you may encounter something similar, Windows wanted to reformat the SD Card before it mounted it (DON'T do that if you want to backup your files [and I'm not sure on what the phone would think about that]).
I guess it could work Fine in Mac OS X (but I haven't tested..)
Reboot the phone (mine had trouble recognizing the card after I had disconnected it from the computer)
Go to Settings > SD and phone memory (* ) >Unmount SD Card > Format SD card
Reboot again (not shure if it's needed but just to be sure)
Connect to the computer and put your data back on (be careful, the best is perhaps to only transfer "your stuff" and not replace any files that already are on the card). AND BEFORE you pull out the cable, make sure you unmount the card from your computer!!!!
Done!
(* Translated from Swedish, don't know what it says exactly in English.. )
If you need directions for how to use Linux for this, feel free to contact me..
Try doing a google search for h2testw its a bit of software that can be downloaded that test SD cards and removable drives. I recently had a problem with a new card ran that and it told me that the card had a problem, I sent it back and got a new card and don't have any problems now although they were different to what you were experiencing.
I get the same issue about once enery couple of days. I'm first alerted to it when I get a notification saying the automatic backup has failed, then no writes are allowed to the SD card. It's solved temporarily by rebooting.
Phone is stock, Orange ROM, stock 4Gb card. I use HTC sync and often use the phone in disk drive mode.
Simple damaged SD card...

All my issues disappeared after i removed the task killer.
Just today, I've started getting issues. It *only* happens when I try to open Spotify. It was working fine this morning on my way to work, but now every time I open the app, the SD card gets mounted as read only. I have used Quick App Clean Cache, and wiped the cache within Spotify itself. Rebooted, powered off, removed and reinserted SD card, and nothing fixes it. ****ing annoyed and pissed off that this keeps happening.
I started having an issue today when I downloaded snes roms for my emulator. They would download and work great until I rebooted or file shared with cpu. Then they would suddenly disappear. Then I started noticing some of my apps that were stored on my sd card lost there picture and weren't installed anymore. That pushed me over the edge to unroot, format sdcard and start over but then I found out I had more problems. I can see and access the existing files on my sd card but I can't move anything else to it. Everytime I moved over unrevoked s-on and tried to flash it, it wasn't there. Two times it actually showed in recovery but then installation was aborted due to bad file (I downloaded it from multiple sources, including unrevoked).
Should I format the sdcard?
I'm lost, any help?
If possible, backup the sdcard, and then yes, try formatting it.
Thanks for the quick reply.
I've backed up my sdcard's content on my computer but I'm concerned that after formating I won't be able to move the files back. Could that be an issue?
Naw, you'll be able to move them back. You just have to copy them back over.
I tried formatting the sdcard and it didn't do anything. It gave me the warnings about erasing all the files and everything...
Using clockworkmod I tried to partition the sdcard and it had a similar result. It warned me that everything will be erased but when it booted back up everything remained and it's like nothing happened.
Is it possible that the sdcard has been locked?
Did you forward with the partition? Cuz it does warn you. And when partitioned, it should have nothing on it...so try running it again, or do it on a pc if available.
I don't have an adapter for my computer so it looks like I'll need to pick one up tomorrow. Thanks for the advice!
Oh and yes I went forward with the partition along with formatting the card. Both had zero effect. Nothing had been erased.
Hmm that's weird, but alright. And you can shoot me a message if you need anymore help.
I got to work today and swapped a co-workers sdcard into my phone and took a picture. It showed up on her evo proving that my phone still is properly writing files. The sdcard must have just crapped out. I'll be formatting it using my computer today so hopefully that will help.
Well I got a new SD card and everything works perfectly. Now my 8gb will just be my backup after I format it.

Woke up this morning to my alarm not working (no big deal).
Checked my phone, said it was unable to mount the sd card.
Tried to access files from recovery - unable to mount sd card.
Checked sd card in computer, no file system found (RAW), required formatting.
Checked sd card in Kubuntu and was unable to mount it.
Finally found a recovery software program and ran that; found photos and some vids, but in generic folder/file names (i.e. DIR01/JPEG001).
Is there ANYTHING I can do at this point?
I tried formatting the drive in Windows and then ran a recovery again and found some more files (maybe 1/3 of my Titanium backup files, the .apk.gz file types; almost all seem corrupted though).
Am I stuck reformatting and starting over? I had just done a nandroid backup last week and now that seems to be gone, too.
As of now I have been able to access the sd card through an adb shell and pushed the newest MIKG ROM and flashed that successfully. But I'm still without any of my apps, data, pics, and everything else.
Any help is appreciated.
If that data was corrupt, then unfortunately its lost, and you'll have to unfortunately format it again.
I was afraid of that.
Well, guess I get to start off the new year with a "new" phone.

Hi,
I was running Flex ROM w/ the MicroSD swap Mod. I shutdown the device and took out the memory card. I used the card for transferring some files. After I inserted back the card and turned on my device, the A100 was no longer detecting the MicroSD swap Mod. I tried to install a new ROM, Green ICS, but it is still not working. The Internal and SD storage are reflecting the Internal Storage. I have set the permission correctly on the install-recovery.sh but I cannot get the MicroSD swap to work. Could anyone please help me with this?
Thank you.
Are you sure you set the right permissions? If you used Root Explorer, all the boxes must be checked. Also, have you tried running the script on boot (using script manager)? You could even execute the script manually.
Since this started after using the card outside of the tab to transfer files, I would suggest checking it for errors, or even formatting it and trying again. A bad removal from a PC can cause this to come up, it seems to happen occasionally on all devices when the card is removed and used on either another device or on a PC. Android won't always notice something is wrong, just won't mount it without reporting errors or things like that mount swap script will fail as the mounting isn't completed on the external SD, so it can't swap mount points (one is missing).
I say bad removal from PC because, windows in particular, will allow you to unmount for removal while STILL writing to it, which makes no sense to me. In my experience, even in linux, the file transfer dialog will say its complete, however the card is still being written to for up to a few minutes afterwards. The card reader I use has an activity LED on it, and I don't even attempt to unmount (or remove in windows) the device until after that has stopped blinking for a few seconds. Removal while still writing can cause filesystem errors that android will usually pick up, but not always.
If possible, try the card in another android device and see if it mounts.
If not, copy all of your data off to your PC, then format it FAT32, then insert into the tab and see if it picks it up.
If not, insert it into the tab and see if it will allow formatting from there.
If not, insert it into another android device and see if it will allow formatting from there.
If not, perhaps wiping in CWM or TWRP will allow it to be mounted.
If recovery will not mount it, even after ALL of the above steps, then the card may just be bad, its flash memory, it happens. A recovery log would help if this happens, and point out why it's failing. ADB shell can then be used to attempt to repair it by e2fsck for error checking, and mke2fs to format it. Final last ditch is zero it out and format again. That should overwrite any bad areas with zeros and "hide" the bad data by writing zeros over it. Takes a LONG time to do this though, roughly 20 minutes per 6 GB. But before we ever get to needing to zero it out, the other tools will report something like a bad super block which can easily cause failed mounts and won't always be reported in android.
Thank you for the replies. I have already reformatted the microsd card. It is actually read by the tablet and no problem using it but I still cannot swap the memory. It was working before. The permissions are correct. I've set it with everything checked for rwx. After rebooting, my internal memory is still the same but the SD storage becomes a duplicate of the internal storage. I have tried using script manager. I'm not sure though if I ran the script properly. Is there any guide on running the install-recovery.sh on script manager? Thank you again in advance.

To run it manually in Script Manager, just select it and click run (make sure you are browsing as root). You could also use Root Explorer (a bit more simple) - Simply tap it and choose execute.
Thank you for the response again. I tried executing it on Root Explorer but nothing happened. It says install-recovery.sh was executed but after restarting, nothing happened. My bootloader is unlocked and I'm using TWRP 2.1.1+. Both Flex Reaper and Green ICS ROMs no longer works with the MSD2INT Mod on my tablet. I'll try reverting back to HC then re-do the whole process of unlocking bootloader and rooting. If anyone has an idea or similar issue, please assist. Thank you.

If you use Root Explorer to do it, it will not work after a reboot. You would just execute it and use it from there (and re-execute after each reboot). Script Manager is best since you can set it to automatically execute the script on boot.
Thank you. I tried using Script Manager on /system/etc/install-recovery.sh and set SU and Boot then saved it. I rebooted but still not working. I'll just try from scratch and see if I get it working again.

Which explains the steps for both methods of using this script, acer stock/modified or AOSP based which uses script manager. Give that a read, it's quite detailed and boring, but it works.
This is also going to be added into the A100 guide as I get around to it, for anyone else having issues. Mainly, make sure the permissions are correct if it's not working, and you're giving it a minute to show up.
Thank you to everyone who replied. I was able to determine the issue and fixed it. It was a problem with my microSD card. pio was right. The card was corrupted. It was being mounted and detected in the ROM but I was not able to mount it on the recovery. It seems it is not read during boot up and it only gets mounted when the ROM is loaded. I tried reformatting it using the Windows format tool but it still didn't fix it. I was able to use the SD Formatter v3.1 application to fix the problem. The microSD to internal storage mod is now working. I'm back using the Green ICS ROM. Thanks again for the help and suggestions.
