Iv read in a few places that in the newer versions of android (2.3.x) something on the WiFi signal strength was changed to -88 and a lot of el cheapo routers can't keep that signal hence causing the WiFi signal to drop out on your desire HD. Is there anyway to change this on the phone so it picks up the WiFi connection better and doesn't drop out / fluctuate as much?

The radio is what controls the WiFi signal. Different Roms will perform differently with different radios.
If possible always flash the recommended radio for each Rom.
I, however, have not changed my radio from the one the dhd came with. Never had a problem.
Some roms have an increased WiFi scan rate. I don't know how to perform this independantly though, sorry.
So to sum all this up. if your WiFi is dropping. Try flashing a different radio. Be careful though. This is the most risky process for bricking phones. But read plenty of posts and it should run smoothly. Hope this helps.

any solution?
I'm experiencing a fluctuating wifi signal even without moving at my desk. Is there any solution?

I've got a HTC desire running 1.21.405.2 stock, non rooted and I've noticed that the wireless signal strengths is by far weaker then on my other cellphones. I don't know if its my desire in particular, a general desire issue or a software issue.
I've compared the Desire to my old E51 and E66 both phones outrange the Desire and have a better signal strengths at similar distances.
Dose anyone notice there Desire to have a weaker wi-fi performance compared to there previous phone(s)?
Haven't noticed this myself, I got 3-4 bars in my room and the router is in the basement.

Have you compared the speed of pages loading?
The other devices might just use a different scale.

well the desire dose load faster then the other 2 cellphones as long as it has a wi-fi signal but it also looses the connection faster then the 2 cellphones when increasing the range. I don't think that the browsing speed is a fair test and can't probably indicate the actually wi-fi performance due to the fact that the E-series devices have a lot less processing power to render the page.
The limiting distance between my cisco class N router is about 2 rooms and 2 very thick concrete support walls. I've also tried this in a local restaurant that I often eat, I've noticed that the E-devices have a better reception signal and yes I've thought that the power scaling on the devices might be different but the fact that the desire is outraged by the E-series tends to show that that's not the case and weaker wi-fi radio is present in the Desire.
It does have slight wifi signal issues. Flashing new radio helps, though.
Just fishing for ideas on connection speed problems. A work mates is on t mobile also and gets speeds upto 1Mbit and I only get 0.35 at best ( behaves almost as if it's capped). I am running RcmixHD Rom with no other problems. Just curious to know if anyone has any ideas?

Does he have a custom rom as well or just stock? That can play a part. Also the signal as well but I guess you two were stood together. Maybe a radio update could help. Could be a bunch of problems. Talk to T-Mobile, see what they say about it. Maybe it is a hardware issue, maybe it is T-Mobile messing up. Who knows.
I have been running chingy's re-engineered and the rom rocks as well as cell reception! I went to cm7 to see what it's like and cell reception is horrible. I also tried redemption rom and noticed cell reception was horrible as well. I am back to re-engineered and 3g is consistently connected with anywhere from 3-5 5 bars, but when I was using the other roms mentioned I would see weak 3g signal and occasionaly switch to 1X. I tried searching and couldn't find anything on this issue. Anyone have any ideas?
I have also read that the issue is a cosmetic thing which I can understand. But when it switches to 1x, that in my eyes is an issue. But its strange that this only happens with incredible roms built from source and not with evo roms.
Chingy's ROM using the EVO's 6bar signal strength meter, but CM7 and most stock ROMs only use a 4bar signal meter. This is why you see a perceived difference, but honestly I've never noticed a performance increase or decrease for that matter when I switch betweens ROMs regardless of what my status bar says.
Thats what my thinking was. But, I see full strength with chingys but actually switch to 1x from time to time on cm7, which is the wierd thing.
i dont know if signal is worse, but i think they handle the lack of signal differently.
I am using myn's and when there is no signal and you try to make a call it fails immediately with no error at all whereas with the stock rom it would say call failed.
Different ROM's measure the reception differently, if you go into settings > about phone > Network -- you'll see the dBm measurement of your signal.
This jumps around a fair amount too, so take that into account. It will vary depending on where you're positioned in your building / house, the weather outside, etc.
Your signal should be exactly the same from ROM to ROM, flashing a new Radio is pretty much the only thing that will change that, and those aren't included in ROM's.
Sounds good! Currently running Miui which is great, and haven't lost 3g yet so maybe the past flashes were just flukes.

I can't seem to get a decent wifi signal unless i'm actually standing near the router (and even then it's 2 bars at most). I doubt it's the router (cisco linksys e2000) since my iphone and pc have no trouble staying connected while being further away. I remember having a better connection when i was using the stock rom (cm7.3 atm) so i'm guessing there's something i need to fix but im not really sure what's wrong and was hoping someone could drop some knowledge on me.

Hi there, This issue can be caused by a mismatched ROM and radio, each radio and ROM work together with a specific RIL (radio interface library) which can be flashed through recovery or CWM. You may find that the recommended radio for your ROM and the correct RIL could solve your problems.
The wifi signal on DHD is poor while comparing to other phones, I wish that we could modify its strenght.
Through a wooden wall and about 4-5 metres away the signal is around 65dBm, which is ok, but as soon as I move slightly so the the signal is going throught diagonally it drops to 80dBm instantly. That's only moving very slightly.
In my sig you can see what I'm using and so far that's the best combo I've found for a decent signal.

How can I fix this one? It is stable but weak.. When I am near my router everything is ok, not only my router.
I tried to find answer to my question in google but without any success. I was kernel Ktoonsez which has different drivers for WiFi and will this fix it?
Mine is pretty weak as well my one x had great WiFi strength ... have tried many different things and so far no luck. I might try a kernel out but I'm not sure that will fix it

I will agree that this phone doesn't pick up the strongest of WiFi signals. However, I noticed that removing my protective casing helps. If you use a case on your S3, have you tried removing it to see what happens when connected to WiFi?
