Does anyone know if juice defender is actually a good app or no.
I use it on my phone but I never keep and data connections on anyway 3g 4g and wifi r always off unless I need to use them and then I turn them off when I'm done.
Since its "job" is kind of already done by me could it be a source of battery drain since its always running andin a way its for no reason.

Just think.its another app that wl run.just go to settings and customize that way.task killers waste battery and take up space.to maximize battery,research and try roms and kernels with different settings.im on miui rom,kernel v8,panache radio,and am at 38% battery,so with moderate use,its 38% after 10 hrs.gps off,with sporadic use of wifi.in otherwords,try different setups,but juice defender is up to u.

That's what I was thinking.
So you also think that advance task killer isn't nesessary?
I use my phone a lot for almost everything so I try to keep my battery as high as possble but sometimes after just 3 or 4 hours I could be at 30% or lower.

It is a very useful app, it will disable your radios when the screen is off to preserve battery life.

And I usually have problems with my signal I'm not sure if it could be from it or not but I'm gonna just uninstall it for a whil and see if there's any differences.
Juice defender works well for me. At work I would have to put my phone on the charge at noon just playing mp3s. i get through the hole day now with 40% or better. i stream music for about 7.5 hours of the work day.
I've used Juice Defender since I got my Epic.
Though now that I'm running an EH17 ROM, and frozen DRM services, it's really not necessary for me anymore. Been off the charger for 11 hours with light use and it's still over 50% - on the rom it shipped with I was lucky to get 8 hours before it would shut off (with JD I'd get about 18 hours).

It probably helps you cuz you have internet connection on and it turns it off when your phone is sleep. I keep all my internet connections off all the time so I don't think out does anything in my case.

I'm on eh17 too and I froze drm, sns, and system updates. So far I've been on my phone for an hour and a half and in still at 100% this is great. I installed juice defender last night.
I have been using juice defender for a few weeks and it helps my battery life a lot. It really depends on your usage. I am in roaming areas fairly often where my phone used to search for signal for a long time if I keep it on.
I installed Juice Defender the other day & my phone had issues right away. I unistalled within a couple of hours. However, afterwards I was unable to access my pictures or videos stored on the SD card. I know this app caused the issue because I was looking at some pics right before installing it & could not access them after installing. Luckily I ran accross a post in th PA CM10 thread that gave me the solution. For some reason the Juice Defender app placed a .nomedia file on the root of my SD card that was causing my issue. I deleated that file & the media scanner autmatically started running. Just like that I had pictures again.
I hope this helps anyone that may run across this issue.
It wasn't juice defender... if you have rom manager it was that... I use juice defender and have never had it place a .nomedia anywhere... the app doesn't place files anywhere...

Thanks for the correction.....I assumed that since installing JD was the only thing that had changed in the hour or two that the issue popped up, then that would be the cause.....I have had ROM Manager & GooManager for a while but have had no such issues before....I guess if it becomes an issue then I will have to loose those......I only use them to check for updates & always do manual downloads & installs for the ROM's anyway......

Your good... a recent update to rom manager messed some things up... if you check its all over the forums that everybodies media is disappearing... rom manager is to blame... but I believe it has been updated and fixed....

I find it depends on the ROM. I was using it for CM9 to help but I find the CM10 pre+kernel+nexus modem combo is doing me wonders. I also stopped using the facebook app, uninstalled facebook mgr as well and use Trillian to connect to FB, AIM, etc. also trying to get rid of this media server.. seems I dont need it. I expect more battery after that (if removing it is possible) because it's #3 on my batt draining list right now.

If you listen to music and such (I believe whether it be streaming or mp3s from the sd card) that's why you see media server so high... same for me, but I'm constantly sitening to music while surfing xda... and still pull off 16+ hours on cm10... I used to use juice defender, but found if your gonna turn of data and such, it saves more battery if you can remember to do it yourself instead of having an app use resources to do so.........

I used to use apps like JD or advanced task killer to kill background processes and turn stuff off until I found out how Android handles programs in the background so I became less concerned.
If you're having issues with massive drain on battery life, make sure its not because of weak cell phone reception. If you're in an area with little to no signal your phone will use up extra juice to try to attain a connection so it'll drain your battery like 50% faster. Also make sure you have things you don't use turned off... like BT, GPS, WIFI, 4G anything thats optional.
Also consider the battery and whether or not it needs replacement. I got a defective battery and didn't know it until I had the ability to compare my phone to 4 other Epic 4g phones.

I have done everything imaginable to improve battery life and my battery monitor shows that 93% of my battery is taken up by my screen. I always thought this was a good thing as it means my system isnt raping my battery.
Im using syndicate 1.2 and i have everything disabled drm/sns/sys update etc etc.
I just dont understand how my battery gets drained so quick. Honestly with regular usage (no games...just browsing and news) on a regular battery it maybe will last 6-7 hours. Doesn't really make alot of sense to me. Was hoping I could narrow down specifically what may be causing it.

I have seek droid installed as well as lookout and I'd like to keep gps on but if its draining battery just by being 'on' without being used i'll leave it off.
Yeah, widgits will wipe out your battery. Especially if they are constantly updating....

Or, you can pay for Titanium Pro or Bloat Freezer And freeze apps that run even when not in use like Maps,Poweramp,Root Tools, there are lots that do that I bought Bloat Freezer and found out even Google+ runs when not in use. I had like 16 running unknown to me. Launcher Pro was and I use Zeam....

You can't have your cake and eat it too. The best thing I can recommend is to put app shortcuts on your home screen, you can afford 1 more tap but you can't magically add more battery.
Also turn down your screen brightness. The display is the biggest drain on your battery than anything else. I can literally watch the percentages click away while browsing or reading through XDA. Screen off I use about 1% an hour. Reading XDA I can drop from the 90's to the 70's in 20 minutes.

i am running cm9 alpha 4 with kernel fe16 and i cant get through 5 hours without having to charge or throwing my extended battery in. i need my phone to last the day with the job that i do email,calls,text,social networks,ect. i would really like to know why my battery is draining so fast. i deleted alot of apps that were draining the battery, but it dies too fast still. please help.

are you using a custom ROM? I'm kinda new to Samsung devices, but I know HTC's Sense was a battery hog, so I'm sure Touchwiz is the same.
Try installing CM9 or AOKP build 37.
I have AOKP Build 37 installed and my battery lasts the whole day.

Try a different rom, tfe16 has been the best yet for me and agat has an updated version coming soon. Also dont use 4g, wifi, gps etc unless you need them. Solid black background and lockscreen, inverted apps and dark settings. Ditch facebook twitter and crap like that that updates and burns battery.

Go outside and play instead of sitting on your phone youtube'in
Whatever guys that stuff applies to any mobile device. Turn off stuff you arent using, ditch the live wallpapers, worthless apps, and status updates and you get more battery life. You want to surf, download, stream then by all means toggle wifi or 4g on but no reason to leave it on while you are doing nothing. Same goes with gps and bluetooth.

With the exact same setup I have now, I get 20-30 hours on gingerbread. On cm9... I get five.
I don't leave wifi on. Don't leave 4G on. Usually have a minimal screen on time of around thirty freaking minutes.
Don't tell me that I need to cripple my phone (i use it for business). Because there is something clearly wrong. I suspect it is the kernel. I don't have unnecessary apps installed (aside from ones that work great with gb). Don't use a live wallpaper. I do however, refuse to disable auto syncing.
There is clearly an issue with ICS.
I'm not going to turn my smartphone into a paperweight like you suggest.

Google plus, drive, picasa all sync pics and other crap in the background without telling you and it kills your battery especially if you are in a bad signal area. Figure out whats draining your battery by using better battery stats and apps like system panel lite http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179809
Honestly though try another rom and do a clean install. If you get 80% less battery life no amount of tweaks will fix it and the ics leaks are good now. Several months ago the battery life was half of gb and now they are about the same.

Trust me, I've done all this. I have the same battery life with ICS now that I did a couple months ago. Going to stock, it is wonderful. Had my battery tested by sprint yesterday, it's fine. So, i'm just waiting for a real kernel and hoping for the best.

Turn off LED notifications they're a known issue for wake-lock.
I get terrible battery life on alpha 5. Change to a stock kernel might help.
Kobridge's tweaks http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668853 along with Badass Battery and CPU Spy have helped me trace battery drainers. Also wholeheartedly agree turning off apk's and functions that are of specious value helps greatly ie.( auto rotate, auto brightness, dialing back on sync; etc.)

My phone was getting hot because my Media Server(Media Scanner) process was eating anywhere from 10 to 30 percent of my cpu and battery.
My numerous attempts to disable it were unsuccessful,i deleted over 80 apk files and it was still running,lol.
I did a a temporary fix by placing .nomedia file at the root of my sdcard,and guess what?Its still fckn running!
I gave up and thought that it must be just on my phone,guess what?I just got brand new GS3 for my girl and same thing is happening on her GS3 and she is running stock and never been rooted.
Im trying to disable this Media Scanner from running because from what i read on the internet there is no permanent fix,its ics issue.
Im asking people to take screenshots of this process like i did and post them.Because im sure that there are others out there that have this problem that are not even aware of it,and it contributes to bad battery life and phone getting hot.

You can take a screenshot by pressing and holding power button and home button simultaneously.
I ended up getting a hyperion extended battery. helps alot!

Media Server is the name of the process for ics Media Scanner.

Flash Trinity Beta 4 kernel.I had about 4-5 hours screentime,now i have 5-6½ hours and zero lag.This is the best thing you can do for your phone.

If you say so.. .........but uh I'm pretty sure I've always been able to track the direct correlation of it using cpu time to my music habits. And the CPU time of my music player, etc or Bluetooth audio activity. Not that I run ics any more. ...its old hat

i never run anything that plays music or bluetooth and mine is always running. I text, play words with friends, draw something, and use craigslist. thats about it. My husbands phone lasts longer than mine did when I was using the reg battery.

I'm having the same issue running AOKP JB with the Jb koonst something or other kernel and i have to go in and kill the service everytime I boot my phone up..... After that it's ways fine... Have you found a solution just yet?

Just checked my phone and the 42 minutes of stayawake time listed on mediaserver correlates to the amount of time I listened to podcasts today. My phone is sitting at 74 % battery left after 8h17m on. That's in a crappy coverage area. No issues with mediaserver here. Running Stock ICS, rooted, stock battery, I've done nothing to kill or freeze any apps.
On the other hand, I don't use the stock media players. I use Poweramp for music and BeyondPod for podcasts. They both seem to use Mediascanner for a backend.
i have Allshare, Media Hub, and Maps, constantly running and i don't even use it and GPS, etc.. are all off.
to me, Android manages apps poorly, yet i've read app management is good for apps that are idle.. if it's so good why is battery life so poor. the problem is they make apps launch faster by having them "saved" in background but to me that still use resources.. I rather the apps take a second of two to load (by killing them when not used) rather than constantly chewing battery by having stuff cached/background running. despite the CPU going into "deep sleep" it manages to chew 7-10% battery life overnight just sitting idle. the only solution is to root and hack all the $#*s out.
i hate to compare WebOS with Andriod but on my Webos tablet it can stay on for a week or two with a full charge (with wifi on) it barely uses any battery when idle.

No,there is only a temporary solution.Just google "ICS Madia Scanner" and you will find that people are having problem with this on just about every phone.
Media Scanner(Media Server service) should only use 2-4% of your battery-thats normal.But if its using 10% or 20% thats not normal and your phone will get hot.
Mrdia Scanner should not be running at all,it doesnt run at all on my Epic 4G and Epic Touch.It should only run fot a minute or two when you reboot the phone or add/delete files.Dont take my word for it just google the issue.
It has something to do with ics not liking certain media files so it keeps scanning them over and over.

Just use 7zip and remove every app you dont use then flash your custom rom.I have GS2 that is not used as a phone so i deleted even phone and mms apk files and turned it into Galaxy S Media Player.

PowerAmp uses its own media scanner so it should not be running at all.Its a good player but i like Neutron better due to 64bit sound.

Best battery saver is your self. These apps don't work any better than you doing the things it does manually. If its using resources which they all do to "save" you battery... Its not really saving you battery.. But in fact using it.
Some tips I suggest:

for me best battery saver app is still juice defender ultimate. used it on my S3 once (2.5x longer batt life) but not on my N4.

This isn't particularly good advice in my opinion. Are there apps that do use battery power when you don't force close them? Yes, sure, but many don't. And those which do without a good reason.. try to find a replacement.
Force closing apps all the time especially on a device with lots of ram will mean that your device has to restart the app completely if you open it again, which takes time and energy.

Also, turning off sync doesn't really help that much if you still use your apps often but instead refresh manually with the screen on, I'd expect. Of course everyone can decide for themselves, but one of the reasons I own a smartphone is because it can notify of an incoming email or something without me having to go to gmail.com manually. It all very much depends on what you want from your phone and how much you are willing to compromise. Using an App like Lux for example could also save you some battery depending on how bright you need your screen to be etc. There are so many variables to this.
Best battery saver is to not run crappy battery hogging apps like juice defender.
Turn on auto brightness, check your apps and make sure you are not syncing very often unless you need it. For most apps you can turn off auto sync and probably sync manually. I just turn on auto sync for handful of important apps which I open regularly.

Manually turn down screen brightness, don't leave the Wifi or bluetooth on when you're not connected, make sure apps you install aren't keeping the phone awake. Not much else actually works in the real world.

I get two and a half days from my Nexus 4 battery, I can thank Juice Defender Ultimate for a large part of that.
I could do all the tricks that Juice Defender does manually, but it would be a PITA and I'm sure I'd forget some of those tricks.
Better to pay a few quid, take a little time to set up Juice Defender, then sit back and enjoy your doubled battery life.
the best part of Juice Defender was turning off Wifi when not at home.. if you like this feature, search the playstore for 'Y5 Battery Saver'. It does the same thing, is simple and free..
Note: dont backup and restore it in titanium though. If you rebuild, install from the playstore. I have found it doesn't work right if restored
IMO if all you want is bt/wifi to toggle when you aren't home spend $5 on a few nfc stickers and stick one by your front door. You could also go with tasker.
As for battery life, francos kernel is giving me 2 days of battery (far more than I need) with wifi/bt on, whatever apps need to sync do so and I have brightness set to auto.
I found juice defender good for phones that are bloated with crapware and not rooted. It hurt battery life when i used it for phones with custom roms and kernels.

I've had juice defender ultimate since my Nexus S days. I wouldn't be without it as I can't get my battery to last a full day without it. When it's fully configured correctly, it works fantastic. I especially like that I can configure wifi to turn on and off automatically in areas where I have a saved wifi. I can decide the interval I choose for syncing data, and there are many other features. I'm not going to be manually turning on and off functions all the time, all that does is create more screen on time and is a waste of my time.
Bottom line, for me juice defender ultimate works because I spent time configuring it properly for my usage.

1.5 hrs screen on, 1.5hrs on call...I got close to 6hrs screen on when I did a drain test.
And no, I wasn't getting 2 days out of the phone stock with the same usage, it was more like 12-18hrs.
I tried using Juice Defender on a different phone and all it did was make the phone buggy with problems with wifi connectivity and other minor irritations and I could never configure it in such a way that didn't give me problems.
Are you having trouble making it through the day on one charge? I don't think I could use my N4 that much if I tried, I sat in a doctor's office the other day for 2.5 hours listening to Pandora on a bluetooth headset while reading a book with the screen on and still made it until I turned in for the night. Perhaps it is the Trinity kernel or custom ROM I am running, I never ran my phone stock so I don't have anything to compare with. I guess some of you want to go longer than 24 hours but it would be a really bizarre situation for me to need to do that.
So I tried juice defender ultimate and it did significantly increased my battery life. I am now getting about 30 hours or more with my regular usage. Even right now I have 63% remaining battery with 1 hour screen time and 17 hours total run time, see screenshot for usage.

I know this horse has been beat to death, I'm just hoping I can get maybe one bit of info that will help me resolve this issue before I just swap out to another phone. I really don't want to, but I'm just so sick of being chained to a charging cord all day. My phone should be able to hold a charge for at least 1 day, I don't even use it that much!
So with my little tirade out of the way, let me give you the facts I've got a Samsung Galaxy S II/SPH-D710, and the battery just drains down so fast, and the phone's barely 6 months old. I've downloaded numerous process monitoring apps, designed to see what's going on, and they all point at WiFi being the culprit. The phone never hits deep sleep because the wireless is keeping it awake. Sure enough if I turn WiFi off and I go 3G/4G all day my battery is fine. Problem is I can't get to that next level and find out what program or process is causing the WiFi to be on all the time. Even more frustrating, every time there's an upgrade like FI27 or FL24 which I'm on now, the battery works fine for a day or two. Then something kicks in and destroys the battery. My thought is it's got to be an app, I just don't know which one.
So before I kick this piece of **** out the window, I was hoping someone could please help me figure out what app/process is the cause of my battery drain.
Get DS Battery Saver. It will force all of your stuff off when you turn off the screen so that it will go into deep sleep.

Get a new battery?
Apps, batteries, ics vodoo it's a host of things that can solve your battery drain issue. Being that your phone is 6 months old I have to rule out the battery. The fact that your on ics is going to be main culprit, stock ics was not the best at managing battery use. There's something revving the crap out of your Wi-Fi, while Wi-Fi is on even while your screen is off there are processes going on in the background that are using Wi-Fi to send receive, update, sync, you name it and all you need to do is pinpoint these processes.
Some apps in the play store can help, but some of these apps can consume battery also, so it's best to delete it after troubleshooting.
If your phone is working properly and your not a social media junkie while it sleeps it should not be using any battery at all, just enough to keep your processor awake.
I keep notifications are sync off on my phone, while I'm out and about I'll check email or do a quick sync if I want to check for some incoming whatever. Most of the time I want info on my terms, not every minute with chimes beeps or lights flashing.
If you use google maps disable background location reporting, location services just use "location and search " disable Wi-Fi and GPS usage for location services.
This is a start, but I recommend Jb ga10 stock/rooted to give your phone a stable os.
I run stock/rooted Jb de-bloated with minimal apps, no games (all the games I like are on my Galaxy Tab 10.1) I use my phone for calls........... navigation and media player while driving. I get 16 to 20 hrs on a charge.

I get about 20 hours on the Vanilla RootBox JB ROM. YMMV. I also had terrible battery life on the stock ROM and every other one I tried. This is the first ROM that's bested 10 hours. Again, YMMV.

Have you used Better Battery Stats? Or the JB release candidate GB08?
Not to raise the dead, I've just been busy, but this is still an issue for me. I upgraded to JB GB27, and I love the GUI, it’s such a step up from ICS. But I’m still getting **** for battery life. Yes if I use DS Battery Saver it works and I get good battery life. However all those programs cause flaky restart issues. The phone will just restart for no reason. More importantly it’s not getting at the root of the problem.
IRL I’m a computer tech and I can’t just let this go, as previously stated I’m tired of being shackled to the phone charger. I’ve swapped in a new battery, it’s not the battery. I even turned on the setting “Keep WiFi On > Only when plugged in”. That did improve the battery a little, but I still can’t make it through the day without being charged. I’m on the phone maybe combined 30min of phone calls, 30 min checking email, and an hour or so of miscellaneous watching video etc. I know heavy users that are on their phones all day, or let their kids watch Disney movies all night. I’m not that guy, I’ve had numerous cell phones and never have I had one that couldn’t hold a charge all day.
I will be diligent in monitoring this thread, please give me your troubleshooting tips and I’ll report back with the results.

EDIT: Actually I read multiple issues with SG2 and BetterBatteryStats. However your wakelock comment made me stumble onto the app Wakelock Detector. Again I'll run it and report back. Thanks for the point in the right direction.
Ive noticed no better or worse battery between being rooted/custom rom and stock not rooted. However my phone gets about 16 hours on average. My friend has an epic as well and gets only 10 hours. I feel as though it depends on the user and apps. Facebook is a silent killer. As is any app that uses backround. Best setup ive had so far is billgeryans Quattro Rom with ds and greenify. I pulled a whopping 25 hour minimal use before charge and 13 hour heavy use day.....

With titanium backup. You can also install greenify. It puts your apps in hibernation when your screen is off. So basically it's like freezing and unfreezing. Tbh I think it's better using greenify.

so my 2 cents:
1) get a second battery and charger.
2) betterbatterystats to identify "bad" apps and either get rid of them or deal with them.
3) "autostarts" app to stop crap from auto starting on boot that you don't need running as a service.
4) dim screen! huge huge savings. keep it dim enough to use the phone.
Battery issues well I have a solution that won't solve but greatly helps. It's called greenify. It puts all running apps in hibernate mode. It's not like a task killer that just screws things up. U can choose what u want to hibernate and all that jazzy stuff. It's worth a shot. All in all if you want a bada$$ battery efficient rom go with wcx stock rooted rom. It's simply amazing. Check out greenify if you're rooted. It removes all currently unused apps and processes from memory, essentially putting them into deep sleep. That combined with ds battery saver and watching your wake locks will drastically improve battery life:beer:

Okay so does Greenify do this freeze automatically, the interface is a little clumsy. I appreciate all the help guys.
