After reading about someone else trying this I decided I'd give it a go too.
I'm writing this up for anyone else with enough skill who would like to try it themselves.
Before I continue, disclaimer time
I WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR DAMAGE TO YOUR PHONE, BATTERY OR SELF FROM FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE!
If you do it correctly, however, you will probably get really good battery life, if you bought a quality item.
I have chosen a claimed 3500mAh battery designed for an HTC HD7.
You can get these batteries direct from china, or alternatively (like me) you can source them through our well known friendly auction site.
I chose this battery as it is the same form factor and similar design specs as the HTC Wildfire S original battery. The only difference between them is that the battery contacts are on the wrong side of the battery (right instead of left).
So to begin, I remove the sticky film from the battery, to get to the cells inside.
If you are careful enough you could remove this film without ruining it (like I did!) but its not essential. The more important thing is to not damage the cells inside, keeping your craft knife blade flat to the battery helps prevent this.
Once you are in, the cells need to be removed from the plastic skeleton that gives the battery unit its solid shape, battery contact cutouts and battery retention notches (that keep the contact end locked in place).
I found with the battery I had bought, the two cells were connected with thin metal strips. These made it easy to realign the contact PCB (and foam pads) to the other cell (which would effectively make contact with my phones battery bay possible), the foam pad was glued into place and the contact PCB is just resting on it.
By moving the PCB and turning the plastic skeleton, the original holes for the contacts (four of them) were now on the wrong side, it was a simple case of cutting a new hole for this contact plate to show through.
When trying to retrofit the case back into the phone, I realised the notches that keep the contact end in place didnt fit correctly, this meant I had to cut away the edges on the new battery contact side for it to fit.
Once the cells were back in place in the skeleton, it was just a case of replacing the sticky-backed film and fitting a silicone case to prevent the battery from falling out!
I havent had time to test the full life of the battery, so the 3500mAh is only "claimed" and not confirmed for now.

Those pictures are the biggest I've seen, what camera you used?
Sorry for the large pics! I just IMG linked from photobucket...
They were taken with a Nokia X-6 8Gb (the wifes).
I can confirm that the battery must be either low quality twin 1750mAh cells or high quality twin 1230mAh cells.
Voltage has ranged from a normal 3.7v to 4.2v, I've had no bad side effects from this.
Temperatures have been better than with the normal cell. It sticks at a steady 25c and 26c while charging.
I have been getting 6 days standby/very light use (two calls a day, data mostly off) and two days extremely heavy use (calling, SMS, full data incl. WiFi 802.11n unrestricted plus regular GPS use).
So all in all, a healthy increase on standard battery life. I've gotten used to the extra thickness and the silicon case holds it in very well, with no restriction on the camera lens or flash (I presumed with stretching it, it may obstruct the camera and flash).
Just thought I'd add, I've rooted and stripped back the OS and I'm getting even better battery life.
Please compress Your images to a reasonable filesize before upload with www.gimp.org e.g. Thanks
I would be worried about an overheating problem.
No over heating at all.
It still provides the same life as it did when I first hacked it.
I would never be able to go back to my original battery now.
Since updating the ROM I can control the clock speeds more effectively, giving me more than two days on heavy use (Its always being used as a hotspot for my A500 on the train and when local WiFi is crappy).
I've been able to live with the extra depth to the phone, worth the effort IMHO.
I've just taken an interim screenshot at 14 hours from 100% and will post it and the follow-up sometime after tomorrow. Gonna run it down to nothing to prove how worth it this hack really is.... well, for someone who cant afford a better/newer phone that is....

Cool, will do after I've got the last screenshot as I dont want to interrupt the battery graph.
I've just taken the silicone case off and found the battery to be cold, nevermind hot.
I think its probably because of the lower drain on it. It was designed for a more powerful and feature rich phone after all....its probably only drawing 2 thirds the current that the HD7 requires at normal usage....
EDIT- Done. Photobucket allowed me to re-size online....
I think I might get round to making a more permanent back cover from my original too...
Phone screenshots attached.
This was from a standard early week usage scenario, I use my tethering on the train twice a day and when the studio's WiFi craps out or someone decides to stream. I call a few people here and there and text quite a bit.
Seems as though the major drain is the screen, I never think to turn the brightness down these days as the handset is that quick with Alquez' ROM and its OC that I'm seconds doing whatever....
forgot to click upload....duuuurrr!!
it is worth giving a try.Later will post the result
good job but LOL... that reminds me of teletubbies!

1000% AGREE !!!!!
Man, that makes the Artemis look ugly.
when you have business trips, you will change opinion.
This is a nice battery.
I am using it
I agree with what biou said, go on a longer trip where you have no access to electricity.
I bought a double capacity battery for my Ipaq rx3715 which already has one of the best battery life on the market. With the big battery I managed 40 hours continuous use with minimal settings, 20 with normal and 12 with heavy use like video or 8 with extra heavy use, so video + WLAN + big headphones.
When I watch videos my Artemis lasts about 8-10 hours but when I surf the web power drains so fast! I think it lasts for max. 3-4 hours with WLAN on.
I might buy one of these or I buy an emergency charger wit mini-USB. I still can't decide which one I want to use.
Where and whec is it going to be available? Shipping to eu?
I agree that it is ugly, but going on a hike in wood i would better have this fat one as a spare in case i got lost. Happened to me - first thing u notice when lost in wood is how fast gps battery starts to drain and that brings surge of adrenalin/panic.

I have a similar one to this which I use on my extended trips away from the office which also generate heavy phone use and often using a BT headset.
On the positive side it can last up to 3 times longer than the original battery without charge especially when using BT functions.
On the negative side however with the extended battery in use the PDA does not fit the desktop cradle or my GPS car holder.
In my opinion well worth having for those times away from an AC or car charge.
I want to buy one, but what battery is the best? I don't really trust all the cheap batterypacks on E-bay, do you guys have some experiences with a good battery?
Please help me pick one. Thanks
I bought mine from eBay and have not experienced any problems at all.
My battery is black in colour with white text. 2500mAh 3.7VDC and clearly marked for the DOPOD P800W so should be easy to identify on pics of the eBay listings.
My only word of caution is that the two top (closest to camera) plastic tabs on the battery cover are somewhat exposed and therefore fragile when removing the cover and can snap off from repeated swapping of extended battery back to standard battery.
My first cover tabs broke and I bought a second extended battery just to get a new cover when I snapped the tabs of the extended battery cover. Now I leave the extended battery on all the time.
I can do that because I located a different desktop cradle where I could cut some of the plastic away to accommodate my Artimas with the extended battery fitted. I also have replaced my OEM card holder with a universal style so I no longer have the issues which required me to swap back to the standard battery.
Extended battery is great and IMHO not too bulky despite the initial look in the photos.
You can start with THIS then order THIS
Heheh, technically I don't have that exact silicone case, but I'm sure most will work the same.
I can't tell you how the battery behaves as I haven't cleared the battery stats and only started using it today, but I am struggling to get it down from 70% to 0 if that means anything (screen at 100%, everything turned on, playing games and flash, etc)
i9000 batteries don't fit the i897 so you have to peel off the label then cut a small piece of plastic off the end as you can see in the close-up. It only took me 10 minutes with a kitchen knife but it fits, it's secure, it lasts longer than stock, and it's $10 including the case then you can turn around and sell the cover to your buddy with an i9000 for $5

Good job! I was wondering if that would work. Does the case hold the battery securely? On the flip side, is the case overly stressed?
Excellent idea!
One thing I am worried though, is Captivate battery cover that also acts as ground?? gps antenna?? Phone has two contacts on both sides of the cover...
I am not sure what all the unintended consequences would be if you run the phone without the cover for extended periods
The slider locks the battery in place so that isn't an issue. As for the case, mine is a little thicker than most of the other silicone cases I've seen. I'm doing the same thing with my x10 but because the cover is a thinner material, it fits even better on that phone.
As for the ground, I was under the impression that it was only there to amplify wifi signal. And wifi is working fine for me without it.
I thought about doing something like that if I could find a cheap replacement battery door. Cut a square hole where the larger battery fits, epoxy the battery around the door, sand and paint. It would be slimmer but might look ugly and wouldn't fit the dock anymore. The silicone case would at least make it less noticable.
Functional: Yes
Ugly: Yes
It's just a question of priorities, I suppose.
I'd rather keep a spare battery in my backpack.
I actually don't care too much for silicone covers, I'd much rather use a tpu cover. Problem with those is that they don't stretch enough to accommodate these batteries. It fits, but looks awkward.
I wonder if I took a heat gun to it, if it would stretch. I might order another one just to test that since they only cost about $4 on ebay.

Yeah, no **** it's ugly...but due to the placement of the battery at the half-way point of the phone, any extended battery cover will make it ugly.
I have 2 spares but there're occasions when I don't want to have to swap batteries.

Like I said, it's a matter of priorities.
If battery life is your main concern, go for it.
In my typical day I still have 60-70% left when I go to bed anyway, and I have a spare battery and charger for my travel days.
I only need an extended battery when I plan on streaming a soccer game or UFC or something. Even while connected to a charger, I can barely stream a UFC event unless I have the brightness turned right down. (and I use up >700mb )
Having used up one full charge, I'm pleasantly surprised with the performance (which included over 4hours screen on time and 11hours since plugged in).
This is probably a 2300-2500mah which I'm happy with for the price. I was expecting 2 900-1000mah batteries tied together, so this wasn't bad!
Good idea i'm gonna look into trying it out
The cover they send doesn't look like it would work on our i897 phones. Did it fit on yours ? I really don't want to just try and hold the battery in place with just a silicon cover.

You have to understand that because of the design, I had to cut a bit of the plastic around the battery cells. As long as you cut it correctly, the battery is locked in when you close the sliding tab. I can take the silicone off and shake the phone with no fear of the battery falling out.
I added a new pic to the first post to give a better idea how the plastic was cut.
On my x10 only the silicone holds the battery in place and even then I never had a problem.

your pic still isnt the best. try editing with paint and add some arrows. and describe more than, "you cut part of the plastic on the battery".....
Oh an important thing about your mod, the metal backplate (that you dont have) is part of the wifi/gps antenna. thats what the 2 gold contacts on the back of the phone are that touch the back plate.
Whoever orders the battery will be able to see what needs to be cut unless they are complete idiots (in which case they shouldn't be playing with knives in the first place). Look at the first picture and remember that battery was originally square. I didn't intend on making a tutorial out of this, I'm just trying to help some people out (people who prefer function over beauty of course )

I was concerned about that since people have mentioned that on several occasions. WiFi works fine without it, and on my way home, my GPS worked quite well without it also (didn't really notice any degradation compared to GPS with the backplate on).
Now that I've done some testing, I'll be reverting back to standard battery for general usage. This one will be used for when I need to use GPS for long trips or stream over an hour of flash content

I haven't noticed a difference on either wifi or gps. I haven't even bothered to trim the battery yet, just slipped my silicone case over the battery to hold it in place. I kind of like the result - it's a lot slimmer than a plastic back with an extended battery case over it.

True. I went ahead and did it last night. The pack looks like it was built to be trimmed. Under the label, I found a plastic spacer which lifted right out. Then I just used a Dremel to cut off the remaining thin strip of plastic.
Thanks again for the idea.

You can see that now my phone has a Back-lit Speaker port! This is made using a PCB using a simple Resistor/LED serial connection. For those without aa thicker cover, this is still possible because the LED circuit is the same size as the speaker port (though it will muffle with a normal back) or you can put it in the back area of the headphone port.
My reason for this is I am a girl, so I put my phone in my purse when moving about. DO YOU KNOW HOW IMPOSSIBLE IT IS TO FIND YOUR PHONE IN A DARK PURSE? This solves that without being too bright. Also, do not worry as it uses almost no battery and will continue to shine, even if the phone does not have enough voltage to run as this needs only 2.0v to have full illumination! Also, doe not violate the warranty as you do not have to crack open the phone to install, just wrap the wire around the spring loaded battery connections! To connect, just use the FAR RIGHT AND FAR LEFT of the 4 pins, otherwise your phone will get very angry with you and will not charge. Tape is used to diffuse the light.
The red is the base plastic of the phone (used to be covered with black rubberized paint). This has been initially removed by using the back of a razor blade and then finished with plastic polish using a dremel.
Finally finished off with a $7 shipped eBay extended battery with cover.
Nice work!

i notice u have one of those ebay batteries. how is it working for u?
Cheap Battery that does a good extra two and a half above stock out of the box. great deal
you're my kinda girl ;]
Cool mod.
Use your handy dandy DMM to check polarity & voltages?
On the battery or the LED?
Basically, the battery will keep the phone on from a peak of 4.2V and low of about 3.3-3.4 depending on what your setup is. Now, where the led is hooked up is after the battery charging circuit that brings down the voltage to 4.0-4.2V from 5V (again depending on if you have 002 hardware or later versions). That means that this battery will essentially show the same brightness from 3-4Volts and my choice of resistor for this was 103ohm as it was not too bright, but bright enough. The light will show down to 2V with decent brightness, at the limits of the discharge circuitry in your battery (stock cuts itself, the chinese ones do not and do allow overcharging).
You do not need a DMM or Scope for this (even though I love my DSO Nano V2, always in my purse for when I need it!)

Do you notice a difference in battery life?
This is a review of Wristband External battery from dx.com. http://dx.com/p/1500mah-silicone-wr...r-w-adapters-for-cell-phone-more-black-122654
I have done my fair share of battery reviews in this forum (just check my signature link), and made a decision that I'm not doing any low capacity ext battery reviews unless it's something very unique and cheap. This wristband external battery definitely qualifies as both! It's funny how every time I read about smartwatches and their poor battery life, this battery always pops into my head as something they can use as a wristband to clip their watch to lol!!! You never know, when you are away on a trip or outdoors maybe someone decides to use it, although it obviously will be a challenge with all these smartwatches that use a proprietary charging connector. But one thing this wrist band can be used for sure - when you are watching movies or recording videos or playing video games. It will come handy in any situation where you want to give your smartphone extra juice while using/holding your phone with your original case on (no need to hold separately an external battery or to get special battery case).
Advertised as 1500 mAh capacity, I wasn't quite sure how comfortable it will fit on my wrist (I do have a small wrist) and how heavy it's going to feel. To my pleasant surprise I found this wristband battery to be very light at only 85 grams and with its soft silicone mold it was very comfortable to wear. Silicone material completely wraps and seals around it so there is no worries especially when you are outdoors. The battery cells stored in 6 rectangular sections, and there is a separate section in the middle with a sealed power button and 4-led indicator. Such design makes it very flexible to wrap around your wrist. It locks with a snap button and you get two position for a smaller and a bigger wrist. The middle power section has mini-usb connector which is used to charge the wristband battery and also to charge other devices connected to it. For that occasion included in the package is a total of 13 different tips. I'm pretty sure I have seen some for Nokia phones from 6 years ago lol!!! The most important, you get your micro-usb adapter and that's all that you will probably need.
From a spec perspective, this battery doesn't have the fastest input or output charging speed and neither does it has a super high capacity. Charging speed of the battery is not a big deal since the capacity is not that high anyway. Charging speed of the device is probably close to advertised 750 mA, where using my Galaxy Charging current app it showed 600 mA and I know that app is not accurate. When I was timing charging my phone, the charging speed was more in line with 750 mA. And speaking of charging, based on the % of my battery charged in the phone, it translated into the actually capacity of closer to 1650 mAh, which is higher then labeled 1500 mAh. That was the biggest surprise considering the actual capacity is typically 30% lower then labeled. For a phone like my Note 2 with 3100 mAh battery this will obviously not charge the full battery and will not do it at max 2A charge speed, but it will definitely help if you are watching a movie or playing a video game from draining your battery. The most important point of it - the convenience of being able to wear it on your wrist while holding the phone.
Overall, I'm not saying this is a must have accessory for everybody, and for emergency back up charging of your phone you would probably want to look into 10k-15k mAh capacity batteries. BUT, for the purpose of convenience this wristband battery was designed for - it does an Excellent job, feels very comfortable, provides actually a nice chunk of battery boost, and cost about $20 plus change. And the reason I like to deal with dx.com for such gadget purchases because I prefer their customer service, selection, and them always take care of you if something doesn't work. Buying from ebay is like playing russian roulette.
Here are the pictures.

With this review, I decided to include a bonus mini-review of another cool "toy" I got from dx.com along with my wristband battery. You guys, and maybe some gals, might appreciate that This is a review of Stainless steel manual-release folding knife with a clip. http://dx.com/p/stainless-steel-manual-release-folding-knife-with-clip-20-0cm-full-length-48331
I review a lot of gadgets and always try to share with you cool stuff I find on internet. As part of my reviews, I receive a lot of boxes in the mail and realized that I usually reach out for scissors in the house to cut/open the box with a pointy tip. So I figured I need to get a cool knife to open all my review boxes. One thing led to another, and I was browsing through dx.com catalog trying to see what they got. A lot of stuff looks cool, and it was hard to choose. Therefore I was relying on a number of positive customer feedback comments, and came across this super cool knife for an unbelievable price of only $7.99.
Now since I received and played with this knife (ok, this is not a toy but a serious tool, so "play" with CAUTION!!!), I thought it was so cool that I wanted to share it in my little review. First off, its all stainless steel. It feels very solid, has a nice balanced grip, and a decent 152 grams of weight. Folded, the knife is about 120mm, with a fully extended size to 200mm. All the pieces are held together with hex screws so you can always tighten it, if needed. It has a metal clip on one side, a well hidden rope cutter at the end-side and a window breaking solid metal point at the end point. This knife opens up with one hand flick and spring loaded assistance, and you can close it with one hand as well by pushing the inner spring leaf out of the way (btw, very impressive safety mechanism). The blade itself has a nice baked in color, while the knife handle has it painted with a shiny coat of finish (that might peel after awhile).
Overall, I thought it was a very well made piece that can find so many uses either to open a mail or for any handy activity around the house or outdoors, or just to keep it in the car since it has a rope cutter and glass breaker (for seatbelt and glass, if God forbid you need to use it). For the price of only $7.99 it was very impressive considering quality of the build and the material.
Here are the pictures.
I love travel, especially remote area. I want a great phone with long lasting battery. Nexus 5 is a great phone, but battery only last less one day under moderate use.
So I made a extended battery, the capacity is about 8000mah, 3.6 times of the stock battery:

I am waiting for the 3D printed back cover to finish this project. According to my test, under normal use, this phone can last 3-5 days with one full charge. The charge time is about 5-6 hours. My wife love it too, I am making another one for her. She asked me why don't mass produce it and sell?
The only thing about this extended battery is the complexity. Like other recent cell phones, Neuxs 5 put NFC, wireless charging coil, antennas and vibrator on the back cover. So to make this extended battery work on Nexus 5, beside the 8000mah battery. I also designed NFC Coil, Wireless Charging Coil, WiFi Antenna, GPS Antenna, and a vibrator. All these components adds up the cost. The retail price may reach $70-80.
I started this battery as a hobby. Is here anybody like my design, and think I should mass produce it? Will you upgrade your Nexus5's battery to 3.6 times for $70-80?
Yes!!!
At that price? Yes, really just depends on the bulk added
-guess
Looking good! 8000mAH is a lot of juice. How much bulk (in term of thickness and weight) is this going to add?
This is a great idea, but way too big. If you made one with a 2000mah battery I'd be all over it. Good luck!
I would take one for that price.

God damn!! I wouldn't mind using it, ingress destroys my battery.
Sheesh that's a lotta juice!
Looking forward to seeing that cover and how the phone looks after juicing
How about adding a MicroSD slot, I'd imagine you could graft it onto the usb port somehow... I never understood why nobody does that.

Technically, MicroSD slot is doable with the usb port, but we may need to cut off the data wires of the usb port. I haven't tried that yet. Don't know if the SD card and USB data can be connected at the same time to the PC / Mac.

Thanks Everybody for the supports. I am glad to see you guys are interested.
I worry most about this mod is the installation part, since Nexus 5 is not deisgned with a removable battery. Please let me know if the following installation is suitable for most of users:
1. We need to take your nexus 5 apart to take the original battery out.
2. Install the small battery of the extended battery and plug in the connectors.
3. Install the circuit board which connects the vibrator, antennas and coils.
4. Flip the large battery back to cover the small battery.
5. Connect the coils on the large battery to the circuit board.
6. Snap the extended battery cover on. (Coming Soon).
Please let me know how do you guys think about the installation part.

About the thickness: according to the 3D file, the thickness is about 17.5mm. I think it's okay.
The last phone with extended battery I used is HTC Sensation XE, with the extended battery is 18.5mm for only 3800mah
The thickness of galaxy s5 is even thicker: 21.4mm for 7500mah (With this thickness, we can make about 10000mah for nexus 5).
The thickness of s4 is 17mm for 6400mah
OMG like really this would be awesome could you post some pictures of your phone with the inserted?
And ps be sure to ship outside the US too
The worst of Nexus 5 is the battery...
This "mod" its awesome! I cant wait to see the Nexus 5 ensambled with the 8000mAh battery!!

I'll Buy
this is awesome. Though i would prefer something along the lines of a 3000mah battery, just so its that much thinner
This looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see how it turns out.
Just perfect
This would be soooooo good. The installation doesnt look hard and you are getting 8000 mAh. Ridiculously good.
Waiting to see that final image with the printed back cover.
I will buy it
This is very good work you've done. But it is a very niche product. Not many people are willing and able to disassemble their phone. Fewer of them own a Nexus 5. Fewer of those want a bigger battery and will ever learn about your product. And fewer still will swallow the price.
I encourage you to charge as much money as you need to, so you can make up for the low sales volume. Don't short-change yourself. This looks like a $100+ kit to me. Maybe you can hold a group buy, massdrop-style, where the price falls as more people commit to buy.
I'd definitely pay for it, well worth the money! but would want a bulky case to fit it lol.
Easily $100 or more wouldnt pay more than $150!
Like he said it's something only certain people would buy and be able to fit it properly, well I would!
I would love to have that battery power but i'm afraid that thing will ruin camera performance.
An extension battery pack can't add any thickness where the camera sits, otherwise it will impact on camera
If it's not bulky, I don't mind paying up to $100-$150. It would be nice if you can make the size smaller and fit it inside.
