Ok I saw someone mention this is some thread but can't remember where and searching for terms like manually boot into recovery is running me in circles so I thought this was valid and should be useful. * I recently flashed CWM5 and a new stock OTA rom and now, once the phone is powered down, pressing volume down and power button results in quick boot and not hboot/ recovery. * I do most modding with Ninjamorph and occasionally I will boot loop and need to be able to manually get back to recovery after a battery pull. (not good with ADB yet) Ideas?
Have you gone into Settingsower: disable fastboot? If so, pull the battery and try vol down + power.
I know some users are having difficulty with CWM5, I'm still using CWM3.0.0.8 cuz it works fine for me.
Nice dog... I didn't find it under 'power' cause the OTA doesn't have that in settings however, under 'applications' at the bottom you can disable fast boot. I'm thrilled. Worked great and earned you a thanks. Fyi, CWM5 (given that this was a non-issue) has been working great for me. I was even so daring as to flash it from Rom Manager... Thanks again dude.
That's what XDA is all about man. I'll update my CWM3x to CWM5x when I get tired of seeing my Rom Manager deny me from using any options

Just a quick post to all of you who are having this issue. This may be a repost, but I'll give the solution anyway.
If you have this issue after flashing Cyanogen Mod 6.1 or 7 just perform these simple steps to correct it.
First (if you haven't already), remove your battery, it won't hurt anything.
Second, replace the battery, hold down the volume down bottom and press the power button once.
(You may release the volume button once the bootloader screen appears)
Third, wait until it checks the MicroSD card for an update file, then using the volume down button, highlight "Clear Storage" and hit the power button once.
Once it reboots Cyanogen should load right up. Hope this helps someone!

No problem. Good info to know though. I've never really had any problems with CM7 but I've wondering if clearing data in bootloader as opposed to recovery might work as well.

I know a lot of people have had this problem. But not all, I guess its subjective.
But I have definitely had this problem, both with version 6.1 and with 7.
I love the Cyanogen Mod! What a difference that makes with Android.
The main reason I switched was because I wanted ad-hoc network options.
I soon realized it was so much more than that though!

I have followed these instructions but it either takes me back to the HTC Incredible splash screen (and hangs again) or to a Clockwork menu (black background with orange text). Either way my Incredible is still not booting back up. Help?

I'll be glad to help you. I don't have an Incredible anymore, but this is fairly universal.
Okay, so what have you done so far, give me the steps you used to flash CM.
Also what version of Clockwork and Cyanogen Mod are you using?
Do i need to wipe before flashing rom?
I have tried miui and CM7 both and after it gets down it gets stuck running the bootloader image. I just got the phone rooted and want to try a rom out, but i am having troubles...
Is good Rom cyanogen?,have htc sense 3.5?

Hey guys
I'm running MrGarak's fantastic MIUI rom however I've found that the kernel is booting my phone into that white HTC diagnostic screen by default. Unfortunately my volume down button is dead and so I can't navigate the menu; the only way I can boot my phone at the moment is to boot it connected via USB as that makes it boot to Recovery and I can reboot from there.
Any ideas? I think this and another rom I tried both used LordMUE's kernel, could that be the reason the boot preferences don't default to just booting the OS?
Any help and/or pointers would be greatly appreciated

So just flash another kernel. What's your problem?
Put a zip on your SD (with a SD reader or ADB pull), then go in recovery, navigate with the 4 keys under the screen (or vol+ and power)... and flash.
What is strange for me is that it seems to happen sudenly... so how do ou know it's the kernel. Anyway...
I have clockwork recovery, and can navigate it using the soft keys (home menu etc). You should also he able to use the vol up key to get to the bottom of the list, (depending on the recovery you're using I suppose)

Unfortunately it boots into the white HTC area (dunno what it's called). The one where you can see if your phone is S-OFF or not.
Also, I'm not sure what is to blame... but I've only just recently noticed that my phone cold boots this way so I assumed it was a recent rom that I applied. Will test this theory later.
Sounds to me like your volume down button is stuck in.
Definitely not a ROM issue, as it has nothing to do with the bootloader.

Basically if you're in warranty you need to flash the stock rom with S-On so you can get a new phone. You can get it to boot but it's really a pain. You have to play with the volume up when first turning on your phone. It took me about an hour. Then when it boots you'll be in a "Safe Mode" (no clue whats limited all seemed fine to me). Then do your backup if you wish.
Also note: Flashing the S-On rom is a PAIN, took me about 2-3 hours of rebooting, holding vol up, tapping vol up, to get it to boot right, but with patients you'll get it to go.

Ah, I'm definitely beyond warranty. The thought of vol+down being stuck down makes a lot of sense!
I'll just take it to one of the dodgy Asian repair shops, if it's a hardware issue I'm sure they'll know what to do.

I've currently attempted to root my Galaxy and everything went well until I tried to back up my applications.
I can't get clockworkmod to work, I hold vol up, power, and home and it shows my the android character laying back with a red ! in Android System Recovery.
Not really sure what to do. I've been searching for possible solutions but I can't find anything.

The FAQ section under it talks about two files that should be deleted as it overrides CWM but file explorer isn't finding them for me.

It sounds like whatever you did, it did not work and you still have stock recovery. Just do it through Odin as described in the thread linked - it is very easy.
Any possible chance of me bricking my phone by adding additional files along with the ones I've added? CWM seems to be working through the ROM Manager app but not working through Vol Up, Home, and Power.
You press power. Wait a second or two, then hold vol up and home.
If you hold power, the phone will never turn on. If you wait too long, the phone will boot into the OS. It's a timing thing.
I've done that and that's how I get sent to Android System Recovery.
I've downloaded CWM through ROM Manager but I can only access CWM right after I download I. It worked last night but today when I tried accessing CWM it sent me to Android System Recovery. I downloaded CWM again then it worked.
For some reason it seems CWM isn't sticking onto my device.
Oh, I misunderstood. To fix that, flash CWM (version 6.0.3.0) again. And when you reboot your device, before your device boots into the OS, drop into recovery mode. It will allow you to disable the script that keeps overwriting CWM for you (you will get this option when you attempt to exit CWM).
Oh wow, I did what you said my phone rebooted. I did vol up, power, and home and got sent into CWM. I think its working now

There is nothing wrong with CWM. There is nothing wrong (mostly) with TWRP. They both work. Pretty well, in fact. Though, I still have issues with TWRP pretending I pressed the back button when I didn't.
Since you are on TWRP, tell me if you can reproduce this: Go into the timezone settings and start selecting different timezones as fast as you can (also works with typing filenames for nandroids, but this is quicker for reproduction). What happens on my device is I get knocked back into the settings page. It is 100% reproducible, but inconsistent with presses/time required to make it crash. I have seen other people complain about this, but not nearly as many as I would expect, given the severity and prevalence of the bug.
Guys, I just installed a pre-rooted image ( I9505XXUBMGA) and it's working fine, but I have no recovery of any kind? I tried installing CWM by flashing through Odin, but trying recovery keys means it just goes to a black screen and then reboots once you let the keys go and boots into the phone as per normal - also tried installing Goo manager and TWRP but no joy there either.
A bit of an oddity is that after installing the above, I installed ROM manager, which subsequently detects TWRP (even though it was uninstalled at this point) but selecting 'reboot to recovery' means it reboots into CWM!! I definitely can't get CWM through the recovery key combination though....
I'm pretty stuffed without any kind of recovery at all, so am not sure where to go from here? Help anyone?

Instead of holding power + volume the whole time, try letting go of the power button as soon as you feel it vibrate but keep the volume up pressed. Once you see the first splash screen with Recovery Booting in the upper left, you can go ahead and let go of the volume button as well.

Jeez, it's always the simplest of things!! Slightly different than my old S2 then...... thanks, bud, you saved me hours of hair pulling!! Any recommendations for an app that'll detect the CWM? I thought ROM manager would, but obviously not..... not in my case anyway.... not the end of the world, as long as CWM is working, that's the main thing!

My wife's old S3 was given to me to use. I had originally flashed CM 11 on it and tried to upgrade to CM 12.1. In doing so I accidentally forgot to flash GAPPS.
I reverted to the stock ROM via Odin but now I'm stuck in a boot loop. The best part? The device's power button does not work and I cannot make any selections within the stock recovery to clear the cache and reset to factory settings.
Can anyone help me?
Pull the battery to turn off the phone and put it back in. If you feel the phone power up by vibrating upon putting the battery in and not touching the power button and go into loop then you have a bad power button. Do you have this problem? If so, then your only options are repair or remove the power button (there is an alternate way to power the phone up). Let us know if it is a bad power button or not so that hardware issues can be accounted for and go from there.
NOTE: The S3 has been known for some time now to have power buttons that fail. Mine did, and I opt to remove mine as I could not justify paying for a repair when the S3 is my backup phone and test platform and I have a method to power up. I use widgets for controlling power off, restarts, and recovery once powered up.
I no longer have a power button either and recently encountered this same issue after using Odin to flash a stock image.
My solution was to flash TWRP recovery using Odin, which allows one to perform operations using touch instead of the power button.

Bootloops have not been uncommon when reverting from LP to KK. Once you have flashed TWRP as others in the thread have suggested, you will probably need to wipe/ format the internal sdcard. The other remedy some have posted is to load a stock recovery and do a factory reset from within that stock recovery.
Not sure how to get into recovery without a power button.
Is the button loose or not functioning at all? You could try opening the phone and removing everything from the frame and see if the power button functions.
I haven't tried this with my SGS3, but on my Acer tablet I have booted into recovery using adb and fastboot. This requires connection to a computer, but not a power button. Unless you have a touch version of a custom recovery installed you still would not be able to select an item.
You may be able to flash a custom recovery using adb. I had broken my stock recovery on that tablet and used fastboot to reflash a working stock recovery.
