One more radio question - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, I wanted to ask you this question that was probably asked a million times before...The thing is, I already changed my radio, and, that's what nearly ruined my phone, and made me take it to the store where I bought it for warranty. My motherboard was replaced. Currently, I'm using coolexe's Bliss Sense 3.5 rom, and he stated as a developer that it is recomended, that us users use the latest radio image. Now, since my motherboard was replaced, and the phone came with FroYo radio version 32.49.00.32U_5.11.05.27, I am currently using that version, and the rom seems to be working fine. I'm just curios, will I actually gain anything from a new radio in means of stability, battery life and stuff like that, or should I just not risk anything, and stick to this old radio version.
Hope someone answers me, or if you have to lock the thread, point me to an other thread where I can ask the same quesition.

If you have no issues with signal reception or WIFI/BT then you don't need to upgrade radio.

Signal is ok most of the time. Wifi and Bluetooth work ok too. I guess that means I should stick to the original FroYo radio. Thanks

If it ain't broke, don't try fixing it...

is the radio responsible for proximity sensor too? I just know that after flashing dev RUU 2.3 my service drops when my screen is locked (or locks itself when I pick up a call)

Noobs,and Everyone Alike(Update Your Radio)

I know a lot of you out there are obviously updating to newer, cooked ROMs. This by far is the best bet when spending the kind of money we are on these phones. You get much more out of your new phone than it is capable of doing from the factory or retail store.
I want to instill in everyone's mind how truly important it is to check out the new radios available for the phone. It takes literally 5 minutes or less start to finish to flash a new radio. You won't lose your newly flashed ROM or any settings that I have found. So, please take notice to my advice. Below is the link for all the newly updated radios for our device. Check out a few of them and make some calls, use your gps. I believe you will be much happier with a new radio, because frankly the stock radios are garbage.
My call signal strength is maxed out in my home whereas it only had 2-3 bars before. My gps doesn't lag behind me anymore, and My Location works perfectly since flashing a new radio. So, try one out. It definitely can't hurt. Below is the link to the thread with all of the newer radios. ENJOY!!!

He mentioned in another thread that the radio he flashed to is the one ending in .57, and that's the one I'd suggest you start with. I happen to have it already because it's the one that comes with the stock T-mo 6.5 ROM...but if you've running any ROM's with a different radio, you'll want to give this one a shot. A few other T-mo users have reported good results with the .77 radio, but I'd still start with the .57 if you haven't already.
thanks outerdepth...
I have always figured I should update my radio, but never bothered/got around to it. Your post re-motivated me, so I updated from .25 to .77 and...
100% improvement!!
My gps accuracy used to be off by about a city block, which I attributed to the fact that 'oh well its a cel phone, what can I expect', now is accurate within a meter or two.
My data speeds are much improved, and I dunno if its my imagination or not, but calls even seem clearer and have a better sound quality to them.
Dont know about battery drain yet, but its not really important to me cause I'm a truck driver, so I can leave my phone plugged in most of the time in the truck
Thanks!!
So this might be a dumb question but are these radio updates official? They overwrite ROM so I'm kinda always wary to ever try this. I have the official HTC ROM from their website and I assume you can flash it back but I'm not sure.
The ROM will stay, all your contacts/text/etc will stay, and you SHOULD NOT have to worry about losing anything. You can use a program like SPB Back Up or Sprite back up if you are worried though.

The thread about TP2 Radios tells you how to choose the ones that will work for you, just look for the ones that say AT&T and start there.

The radio-roms are "official". However, in order to flash one you have to first do the HardSPL, which isn't official....and may not be completely reversible, depending on what carrier-branded (if any) phone you have.
The only reason this SPL issue may matter is if you have to return for warranty return. If they swap the phone for you in a store then surely nobody in a store will know the difference...but if you have to send it to HTC then non-stock tampering may be evident.
That being said, it hasn't stopped me from taking full benefit of what this site has to offer and make full use of what is possible with my TP2.
Good advice for everyone.
Some of the newer cooked roms require a particular radio...or at least will work best with a particular radio. Before flashing any new rom, read to see if the chef suggests a certain one.

No, the security lock only prevents you from switching carriers. Shouldn't affect the radio.
And in any case the phone doesn't have to be unlocked to install a custom ROM, it has to have a different hard SPL.

[Q] Wanting to flash new radio on the Tmobile G2.

I want to flash a new radio to my T-Mobile G2 but i am Really scared on which one i can and cannot flash because they can brick my phone. Any Suggestions and or comments/advice? I have read over the offical Radio Thread and cannot find anything to specify which is which. Thanks in advance

Im fairly certain that all the radios so far in the Radio Thread can be used with the G2, I myself have used these three:
Vision_RADIO_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17( best results for me with this one)
Vision_RADIO_12.28b.60.140e_26.03.02.26
Vision_TMOUS_RADIO_12.21.60.09b_26.02.01.15 (G2)
don't worry as long as you have prem root and s-off with eng-hboot you should be fine flashing a radio. I was able to flash it using PC10IMG way and it worked fine lol

Thanks for the quick response! Is "Vision_RADIO_12.28e.60.140f_26.04.02.17" the best one so far to use? I just flashed it and everything went okay but i cant really see if it improved anything.... :/
Well there's a new one out but its not posted in the offical radio thread yet (maybe it is haven't check yet lol). Well for me I mainly saw a diffrence with the signal bar never going to zero. Most of the time its 1-3 bars at the 1st floor of my house and on the second floor I get about full bars at the most. Oh yea for some reason I saw that my wifi was stronger to but don't know if the radio fixed that to

Whether a particular radio improves reception (and therefore battery drain) or hurts it, often depends on your local geography. Newer radios often have other fixes as well, so they are a good place to start. But its usually more trial and error, and there is no overall "best" or "better" radio.
Also, there is not one "stock" radio. It depends on what version of the phone you have, what region/carrier, and when you got your phone. There are often different radios for different carriers, and each carrier usually gets a radio updates, which then get installed on the phones as they ship.
If you don't understand these concepts, you probably should not be flashing any radios on your phone to begin with.
Your better off going to this thread for RADIO'S http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970809

I'd tend to agree. You'll always find people claiming every single radio is working great for them. If your service is good and you're not having lots of issues I wouldn't mess with it.

Thanks guys. I tried a few radios, and they all seemed to work alright. The reason I was asking is because I wanted to know if there was a known problem with a specific radio I may have overlooked, however, after search, I didn't find anything, so I thought I'd ask you guys. Thanks!
Not true. Use the radio that CAME with the rom. Tmobile releases a rom and radio together for a reason. So if your talking about the ginger leak, the .30 radio is the one that was released with that. Of course you don't HAVE to change it, but why wouldn't tmobile just not update the radio from froyo if there was no reason or nothing to be gained? The rom was built to work SPECIFICALLY with that radio. If we were talking about a custom rom, then ya I agree with everything said above. Since were talking about a stock rom, its a little different.
Radios are flashed through the bootloader. The chance of bricking or messing anything up when flashing through a bootloader is .0000000001% if not lower. So if you got an extra five min in your life go flash that .30

[Q] Stock Incredible 2 + downgrade to h-boot 0.97 + CM 7.1 = bad signal

I have a new HTC Droid Incredible 2 that came with Android 2.3.4 and h-boot 0.98. I followed the instructions here (http //forum.xda-developers. com/showthread.php?t=1298990 <- sorry, can't post links yet!) to downgrade the phone to Android 2.3.3 and h-boot 0.97.
After rebooting the phone, an error message (that I failed to write down) said something to the effect of not being able to get a signal and so was switching to GSM. This was alarming, but after shutting the phone off and pulling the GSM SIM card and rebooting, the phone still worked, but with a weak signal.
I used Revolutionary 0.4pre4 to S-OFF and install ClockworkMod, then installed the stable build of Cyanogenmod 7.1. Everything appears to be working fine except for the cell signal. I have a Moto Droid and it pulls in 3-4 bars from the same location that the Dinc2 pulls in 1-2.
Info at bootloader:
* HBoot-6.13.1002
* Radio-1.09.01.0622
This is a brand new phone and the connections to the antenna in the battery cover are pristine. My assumption is the problem is in software, but I don't know how to fix it. Has anyone else had a similar problem and fixed it? Any ideas what I can do to get better signal strength? Is there a better radio that can be flashed, and if so, will that wipe the whole phone (again)? I really would like to keep CM7, but this could be a showstopper if I can't get it fixed.
Thanks in advance!

May sound dumb but is your battery door on? The door holds the antenna.....
Yes, the battery cover is on and the phone is brand new, so i don't think there are any issues with the connection to the antenna. Based on the dBm level with the 711 antenna, I think things are working more or less as advertised, but the signal strength indicator is different than the one with the stock rom and so shows a lower number of bars.
Yea that's because with a recent ota we went from a 4 bar indicator to a 5 bar signal indicator which may be why you think you don't have a good signal.

It shouldn't.. the Rom doesnt change your radio. No matter what Rom i flash; cm7, cm9, miui, sense.. I stay with .1111 you can flash radios seperate if you want to. The signal bars was just an update to the stock Rom. With the ota came both the rom and radio update

[Q] Weak Wifi Signal

Hi. I am having very weak wifi signal and the signal keeps droping on my one x while my old sensation at the same place has better wifi reception. Any one facing this problem or any one has any fix? I have the insertcoin 3.3.0 installed. Even with the stock firmware i faced the same issue. Thanks in advance.
Hi,
I'm facing exactly the same problem...
only when standing in a range of a few meters from the router, I have a good connection.
My desire has a much much better connection.
do you think we have to send it back?
gr,
F
I had to buy a plug in wifi extender, put it into an area in the house quite far from my wireless modem router, One X now has much better wifi reception.
My Samsung Galaxy Nexus never had this problem, or Nexus S, or Nexus.... seems the wifi reception of the One X handset is weak.
By the way my modem router is Netgear 1000SP and my wifi extender is the Netgear one. Very easy to set up. £69 (in the UK).

but that will only solve the problem at home and not at work or other places
I have the same problem. My HTC Desire has much better WiFi reception than my One X. I tested it with the WiFi Analyzer app and the difference in signal strength is on average 10 DBm, which is quite large difference. For me it makes WiFi unusable on the top floor of my house, where the Desire never had problems. With the One X I have set WiFi to Best WiFi in Settings, but it didn't help much.
What I also noticed are very large variations in signal strength. In a room next to the room where my WiFi router is, I should have strong signal, sometimes I have 2 arcs signal strength in the WiFi icon, but sometimes those bars drop do only the dot in the icon, so a large difference.
edit: as far as I can remember, before the update I didn't notice the WiFi problem, but that might be due to the fact I just got my phone. I haven't unlocked my bootloader so I can't test it myself, so maybe somebody else is willing to test that? It's important to find out, because if WiFi really was better before the OTA update, it means it's just a firmware issue. If not... it can be hardware.
I think its a software issue as many of us are facing the exact same problem only when away from the router. My router is on the ground floor and my room is on the second floor. Its just that floor where I am facing the problem while my sensation has got a decent signal. I feel its a software issue and the next update should hopefully solve it.
I am also having weak signal on ground floor rooms where the router is just 7-8 feet away from me.
I just sent my One X back because the wifi signal was so poor
about 15 feet from the router i had 1 bar signal any further non, what so ever. Pretty much made the phone a useless pile of ****e when it comes to using wifi.
Spoke to HTC regarding it but they told me to send the phone back, i will see what the next phone is like, most likely the same by the sounds of it if other people are having this issue

I just got my replacement. The Wifi is alot better. I have full bars in the same location that i had 1 bar on the old one
There is definately a big difference, my main problem was at home, but i had 1 bar at my desk at work aswell, i now have full bars.
I havent updated it with any firmware as of yet, but it said there was non available when i last got it to check.
If it helps at all its Build 1.26.206.2
Worth sending yours back, there seems to be a few people with this issue, but if it was a fault with the model i would expect alot more people complaining, not just the few of us
I think my replacement phone they have given me an o2 Rom one due to the fact it has crappy o2 software on it... not to happy about that but at least the wifi works
And did you update your first One X? (or do you know which version that one runned on?)

This phone is o2 branded by the looks of it, its not what my original phone was it was unbranded completly, i may take this one back aswell, tho not sure if its worth it as at least the wifi works. O2 wont release the update as early as the unbranded presumably.
Suppose i could just custom rom this and get rid of the o2 stuff

With my old Desire I would just flash a different radio myself, but that's not possible without S-Off.

I think its possibly firmware, like wph says in his posts, I'm sure before the phone had latest firmware there wasn't a problem.
Is it possible to flash the older Rom and firmware?
No that's the problem. Flashing an older RUU will not work, since the bootloader has changed and doesn't allow an older bootloader to be flashed. Unlocking the bootloader doesn't help since it doesn't give S-Off and therefore it's impossible to flash a different radio/baseband.
So will have to wait to the S-off to flash a new radio and hope that could solve the problem?
Like I stated above, if I recall correct, the problem wasn't there with the old radio. But I only used it a few days before the update came. If it's just the radio, maybe HTC will fix it with a new update, so it could be with the next OTA update. If the next update doesn't contain a new radio, then the wait will be longer. If the radio from 1.26 was really better, it would be nice to know that for sure. That means I don't have to send my phone back. And there S-Off would be handy, then I could test my premise. If the radio isn't the problem, but it's hardware, then waiting is pointless and we just have bad luck with our devices.
I mailed the seller yesterday concerning this problem, and they are going to change my device. I will send it today, hoping to get it back asap.
