Nils' Business GingerSense 3.0 (9/1/11 V2.2) Internal Memory Issue - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

love this rom, upgraded to 3.0 and dig it, only hangup i'm experiencing is that i'm suddenly having issues regarding internal memory...other than updating the rom from 2.1, i've made no changes nor added any apps, however, upon upgrading, i all of a sudden didn't have enough space for all of the apps i had on here before and now i'm constantly getting low storage prompts when attempting to get on a browser or updating existing apps...initially thought maybe it was due to not going through full wipe on update, so went back and completely wiped and installed rom, issue still remains, please advise on what might be happening here, thanks in advance
JC

Your best bet would be to wipe the cache of your apps. I think there are apps in the Android market that do this for you.
If I've helped you, hit the thanks button!

well i have done that as well via ES Task manager, but still come back to the same problem; "low memory" and unable to load any of my previous apps, nor update the ones that actually did load..i don't see why it would suddenly be an issue, when it never was before changing the rom, doesn't make sense..confusing, but would like to get this resolved..thanks

Turn off Automatic restore in Settings - Privacy
Boot into recovery, wiping system / cache / dalvik
Only install NBS 3.0 v2.2
Reboot
Do Not sign into any account
Do Not restore any apps
Do Not use Market
Go to Settings-SD & phone storage-
Note your Phone memory "available space"
Use the "Make more space" option if desired
Restart normally
Sign into your Google account
Start restoring apps manually through the Market first
Keep track of your phone memory and wear the apps are being installed to
The idea is to find out what apps take up the most space in your phone memory and move whatever you can to your sdcard. Also, by not checking "Automatic restore" in Settings-Privacy, you control what gets installed.
Good luck and please repost here your results, good, bad or indifferent.
Much love my friend,
Chris7os

thanks chris, i'll give that a shot, but still leaves pondering why it would all of a sudden be an issue, where it wasn't before? thanks

How to clean the cache (globally) in the internal memory?

I think I should clean the cache a bit, i tried to uninstall some apps but maybe it isn't enough. The Android market is unable to download new apps while BlackDroid still works

We need it rooted fpr apps2sd, but still waiting so we must just be patient.
I don't know if it's the same thing you're talking about, but you can clear the cache from the recovery menu.
This does not require root:

But you cannot clear all caches at once. Still handy though.

Awesome find gogol, very handy indeed, less time consuming... would like to see a clean all feature though!
EDIT: Unfortunatly, Android does not offer the possibility to delete data of other applications (on unrooted phones) for security reasons ... the only way to clear an application cache is to call a system application which is allowed to delete it, that's the reason why several caches can't be cleared with one click, just like with this application.
Alternatively, instead of installing such an app, you can practically achieve the same results by going to settings>apps>manage apps
then menu and sort by size
the top 3 or so you can quickly clear and be done.
A quality utility, thanks
Ok I done a factory reset and gained 128 meg Install lots of appz and still have over 90meg free

Low internal phone storage

I just got a notification that my internal phone storage memory is low (10mb left). My phone is only a few weeks old and I've installed maybe 20 apps, and I'm using the stock Telstra rom. I don't recall putting any large files or anything like that on my phone, I put all my photos/music/etc on the SD card. Is this normal? I have A LOT of apps installed on my Hero and I don't remember it ever having a problem with the internal memory.
Also, is there a way to install apps to the SD card? Or is it really only possible to have about 20 apps installed at a time before you have to delete some to make room for new ones?
The reason your Hero's internal memory doesn't run out as quickly as the Desire's is because the Desire's OS files are simply larger. I'm guessing this has something to do with the screen resolution being higher resulting in larger image files.
Anyway, if you want to install applications to SD card, you have 2 options:
1. Root
2. Wait for official Froyo update from HTC
Tips to free up some memory
Go to "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage applications" > press "Menu" key > "Sort by size"
See what applications are taking up the most space and re-evaluate each application's worth to you. See if there's any one that you don't actually use so you can uninstall it.
Clear cache. The browser ,photo viewer, and maps comes into mind as applications that use up a lot of space for cache.
Soft reset your device occasionally. Doing so apparently initiates some sort of cleanup process. I've consistently recovered chunks of internal memory by simply doing an occasional soft reset. (Note: You'll need to shut down and and then restart. Doing the hardware key-combination or yanking the battery won't work)
Thanks. Is there an official Froyo update planned for anytime soon? Also how do you clear the cache?

Official word from HTC PR is Q3 for official Froyo update. Every other rumor you hear about it coming "in 2 weeks" is unsubstantiated. See following link

To clear cache got o "Settings" > "Applications" > "Manage applications". Go into the application you want to clear cache for. If you're allowed to clear the cache, the "Clear cache" button will be active.

I have a Hero with 1.5 and the 2.1 update was supposed to happen 6 months ago and still hasn't. So based on that, if they're announcing a 2.2 for the Desire in Q3 2010, I'm guessing it'll actually come out around Q2 2011. I guess I'll just have to uninstall some stuff

[Q]CM7 apps Force Close

I have used CM7 on my Incredible for a while now and have had to constantly wipe and reinstall every week or so. When i install, the ROM runs perfectly, with all my apps working and everything. After a few days though, most of my apps force close whenever I open them. Namely, messaging, Gmail, and browser force close, along with my market installed apps.
This has happened to me many times now and I can't figure out how to fix this issue. I have changed different options when installing the ROM and tried Fix Permissions in Rom Manager and nothing fixes it .
My friend's phone as well as my dad's have had this same issue on CM7 as well. Any help would be greatly aprreciated!

Check and make sure your data/data partition isn't full. If it is, grab a cache cleaner from the market to free up some space.
This actually happened to me earlier tonight.
Had to reinstall to get through the night til I got back home, but I may need to go back to another ROM if this keeps up. Glad to know I'm not the only one though.

That's true, didn't think about that. Will I have to keep doing that more and more if i install more apps though?
This happens to me and all my friends phones with the cm7 final. They keep telling me its user error. We all have to clean wipe about once a week because of force closes. I finally switched it redemption rom

If what Smabbage said is true then hopefully that'd make sense. That way when you consistently install the nightlies, there is no way for the data partition to fill up all the way. Good to know. thanks!
I've been fighting this exact same problem. The only way I can keep it from happening is to do a full wipe and let the Android Market reinstall most of the apps. Then I can use titanium to bring back the missing apps and system settings.
Here's the things I've tried, with no success:
Wipe Cache / Wipe Dalvik Cache
Fix Permissions
Nandroid Backup then Restore (ok so I didn't expect that to do much)
Uninstalling apps, moving apps to SD (using the Android method, not Apps2SD)
Another interesting thing is that I run Watchdog, but instead of force closing, it pops up a message saying "Disk IO Error in Watchdog". That makes me wonder if some partition (Cache, data, I dunno) is out of space or worse, there are physical problems with the internal memory of my Incredible.
I have one question for everyone - How do I see how much space is available on each partition? I mean, I can go to the Android settings and see App Data storage left or SD card space left, but is there an app or tool I can see that will show me each partition with space left?

Had exactly same issue (even same Watchdog error) and Smabbage's answer was spot-on.
To check, open terminal emulator (gives you shell prompt) and do "df -k" - this will list all filesystems and, among other info, how full they are. My "/data/data" partition was full. Cleaned up some cache's and my phone is back in action.
Seems like a lot of games (and Netflix) fill the /data/data partition. Wonder if it is possible to make it larger at the expense of built in memory?
In any case, may be a good add-on to CM to monitor space in /data/data and give a reasonable warning when you close to running out.
I have been using CM7 for a while now and the apps that force close, are usually tied to the SD card. Try moving them to internal and see if it helps.
same here..
I use galnet miui (cm base)
after a few weeks, it shows 'disk io eror in watchdog'
and many programs fc.
never had this problem before.
someone can help me?
how can I fix this..
I know this is an old thread, but ive been searching around to see if other people have this problem.
i have found a temporary solution. open Root Explorer and go to /cache/dalvik-cache....use multi-select to select all items and then delete. reboot (IT WILL TAKE A WHILE TO REBOOT, IT IS REBUILDING, IT CAN TAKE UP TO 15MIN DONT PANIC) yes, this is in fact "wiping dalvik-cache" but ive gotten much better results doing it manually than through CWM.
this will calm your phone down at least for a few days with no force closes/service interruption, but you will have to do it again..........and again, and again. its better than having to do a full wipe though, obviously. hope this helps anyone who is still having this problem.

[Q] "UIDs are inconsistent", most apps are FC'ing -> Can't Download from Market

[Q] "UIDs are inconsistent", most apps are FC'ing -> Can't Download from Market
So yesterday I ran your run-of-the-mill market search for updates, "update all", phone back in pocket while downloading.. when I pull it out, it's frozen up completely. I leave it for half an hour before pulling the battery, but on booting, the updates start again, and sure enough before long the damn thing freezes up. I try this again a couple of times before clearing all data of the Market and Download Manager apps. Woohoo, seems to prevent the downloads automatically starting, and thus in the short term my phone works. I'll sort out the problem app in the morning (ROM Manager seems to want to go to 4.x from 3.0.2.4, and it's by far the most system-nosy app on the update list, so I'm eyeing it with suspicion).
Morning comes, quick check on facebook and xda in the morning, seems fine. Phone in pocket. Next time I take it out, the bastard's frozen and needs a battery pull again. Swearing a bit by now, I see with some anxiety that when it finally boots, it's throwing something about "UIDs are inconsistent. You should wipe /data." Ohhh dear. Interestingly (and adding to my stress levels), it seems to have started the Sense launcher instead of Launcher Pro, and I'm getting "Swype has FC'd" errors every half a minute or so, on top of the fifteen or so FC messages for various apps after dismissing the UID error. Thank god for the hardware keyboard.
Having a look around on the net, there's a few references to a file called 'uiderrors.txt'. I've taken a look in this, and it seems to have every single app (i.e. everything listed in the All tab in Manage Applications) listed with a mismatched UID.
Any ideas? I suppose the next step is formatting the SD card, but I was wondering if anyone knows what's actually gone wrong here before I start down the path of blindly resetting things in the hope that something will work.
Virtuous 1.02 with the Standard (not Stock) kernel, on an Indian model Desire Z.
Hello... Okay first thing is wipe everything. Then reflash the Rom. If that doesn't work download a different Rom and redownload the Rom you were using. After you flash back try to fix permission. Don't format your SD card yet, let's do that if the wiping and reflashing doesn't work.

Sorry double post.
Thanks for the reply. I first formatted /data with CWM; on rebooting everything was nice and factory-like, but for the fact that nothing could install from market. After trying various fiddling around to make it work, I gave up and re-flashed Virtuous 1.02 (clearing cache and /data) - but still I can't get market installations to work. It eveidently worked for a while, because this time it managed to automatically re-install most apps from my Google account, but now I get "download was unsuccesful" for everything; paid and free. I've tried downloading on both wifi and 3G, uninstalling market upgrades, clearing cache and data for Market, Market Updater, and Download Manager, using ROM Manager to fix permissions, renaming /sdcard/.android_secure, unmouting SD card completely, and rebooting after each of these steps (except the SD card unmount obviously). I only have my primary Google account set up at the moment to try and eliminate any issues with my secondary account (which is a Google Apps email address). Now I'm at a bit of a loss. Does the download manager keep a log of the actual errors encountered?

Because sometimes the sd card can be corrupted and when you download stuff from the android market you will get an unsuccessful or your app says its downloading but never installs. When you restore the sdcard to its original factory it should work again. Well thats just me i guess. but i hope everything goes well my friend

i am having the same problem, i am about to lose my mind.
same issue here cant install anything on any rom
I just ran into this issue today. Anyone know if formatting the sd card actually worked? Backing up 7 gigs of whatever is on my phone is just gonna take too long. I don't wanna do it unless I really have to.
I've wiped multiple times and tried several roms, and I've even checked the rils on my radio and fixed permissions. The whole 9 yards.
Edit:i give up ._. im gonna try formatting it. are any folders on the sd card necessary to keep in order for the phone to function or keep it's root? if not, im only going to keep my music and clockworkmod folders.
had same problem, but a full wipe and clean install helped.

450 apps seem to be too much. It could be that your data partition and cache are nearing full. Also I would like to see a screenshot of the apps usage details-
Settings / Applications / Application Manager / All Applications where the phone reports available memory.
See Screenshot I have posted for you.
You can get a micro-sd card. Partition it and use Link2Sd to install applications on the sd card.
Just install the most needed & priority apps first and see if get force closes. If no, proceed to install the remaining in batches (of say 25 apps per time). If you do fine, proceed until you find the misbehaving app.
Touchwiz needs more space than AOSP Roms so maybe your phone is not getting enough memory.

Thank you for showing some interest in the query....and i m absolute sure that not a problem of storage/memory....now this problem has become universal for me...even if around 100 apps are installed they start giving fc.....internal storage even if around 450 apps are installed...is free around 3-4 gbs. And cache etc is also not full...even ram usage i examined not a problem there..any help...??? Is their anyway for me to find out what is the reason behind fc's or any help from ur side ???
Frequent force closes mean files are corrupt some where.
I would recheck the md5sum of Rom before flashing. But you are saying that the issue has persisted over multiple Roms.
I would take a backup, reflash, start from scratch and install all the apps one by one again restoring only the core data which is really important.
But you can try by fixing permissions through the recovery and see if any luck from there. Also clear the cache & dalvik after fixing permissions.
Ravi.
