Softkey backlight? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

I love the DINC2 so far, but one thing that I wish I could change is the softkey brightness.
Are they supposed to be always on? Even with the clock in night mode?
I tried LED hacks and a few other brightness control apps, but no luck so far.
Does anyone know of an app that can dim/turn off the softkey backlight?

LOL just flash virtuous 2.35 softkeys don't work, but everything else does. No softkeys lighting up is not all that bad.

If I get desperate and there are no other solutions, I might try it.
Does global mode work with virtuous?

Nope

Well, so much for that!
Thanks for letting me know.

what rom are you running? stock? on cyanogen mod the softkeys go out on night mode in the clock app.

Right now I'm running the debloated stock, but am thinking of skyraider zeus.
Had it on there yesterday, but then lost mobile service after unlocking the SIM, and decided to try the stock rom. Service came back, and now I'm chicken to try flashing again.
Does global mode work with cyanogen? I will use this phone in Europe later this year and want a stable rom with working global.

According to post #18 SkyRaider Zeus does work in global mode. I haven't tested it, but I have been running SkyRaider Zeus for about a week now and I love it.

Yep, that's part of the reason I want to use it, but I'd like it even better if it had softkey backlight control, too. I guess I will have to risk flashing and seeing what happens with the softkeys.
When I ran it yesterday, it was bright daylight, and I only noticed how annoying the backlit keys were later that night, when the phone was running debloated stock.

There's no risk flashing most stable roms from the dev section. Make sure you have a working backup of your current rom and you're good to flash new ones. I had an issue trying to mess with global mode on my phone once and it required me to do a restore of a working backup I had then all was fine again.
Also in the cm7 thread this post confirmed working global mode recently. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17245922

Thanks for the info!
When I ran into the no service problem after unlocking the Sim, I restored via cwm, but nothing
worked. Got an endless 'loading, this can take several minutes. Please wait.
This was the backup of the stock ROM, though.
Sent from my ADR6350 using XDA App

if you had issues restoring a backup in clockwork then it wouldnt have been because you unlocked the sim card. sounds like you had a corrupt backup or something went wrong with the backup you were trying to restore. but out of curiosity, how long did you let it try to restore before you gave up?

The restore went through successfully, according to CWM, but when the phone restarted, I was stuck with: Loading! It can take several minutes. Please wait.
I waited for an hour, and then flashed the debloated ROM.
What happened after the SIM unlock (I was running Skyraider Zeus at the time), was that I lost my mobile service.

I am sorry to hear you are having problems. I hope you didn't lose any data. I run cm7 nightlies. I have heard that cm7 supports global mode. I also use an app called "Screen Filter". When I was unrooted/stock, the app would not turn off my softkey backlight (there is an option to enable or disable softkey backlight), but on cm7, the feature works. I have two widgets, one set at 46.8% without softkey backlight, and one set at 97.8%, also without softkey backlight. The second one barely dims the screen, and turns the softkey backlight off. And best of all, with cm7 I am able to assign one of them to long press search key, so I can turn off the softkey lights from anywhere. I have not tested it, but there is a chance this could work on a rooted sense rom (the screen filter setting). I know it works on cm7 though.
Also, with cm7 you can control the brightness of the softkeys (if you only want to dim them) if you customize the auto-brightness (the setting is built into the rom), but then you have to use auto-brightness (I do that as well).
Hope that helped!

Thank you!
You don't know how happy it makes me to hear that cm7 does global and screen filter works with the softkey backlight!
I'm a big fan of Screen Filter, anyhow.
Can you tell me where I can find the latest stable version of cm7 to try out? Or do I need to grab a nightly?
Any ideas on battery use, and signal strength with cm7? I have pretty horrible signal strength with the debloated stock rom, though it was no better with the unrooted stock.

There is no stable version yet, but here is the link for the nightlies:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1156343
I find them stable enough for daily use. I have used WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth, 3G, Tethering, SMS and MMS with Handcent, etc. and have never had any problems (other than the compass issue with AOSP, which I really don't mind, as it's fine when I'm moving).
There is also a beta:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153261
if you don't want to deal with nightlies. I haven't used it, but I have heard it's good enough for daily use.
I do have pretty bad signal strength with this rom, however I have always had bad signal strength and have never dropped a call/had to resend a message. At best I can get around -80 dbm, but usually I'm around -90.
My battery use has been okay. Not 72 hours like some people report (I don't see how that's possible with any rom), but with ~2 hours of screen on time, I'm usually just below 50% at the end of the day. So I charge every night, but I never worry about making it through a day. I use the Tiamat kernel because without it the speaker on calls is too low for me, but another benefit is that Tiamat includes the smartass governor, which is supposed to help battery life.

Thanks again!
I'll check out cm7.

Yes! It works!
I have the latest nightly and screen filter controls the backlight!
Thanks a million, and also for mentioning the long press option.
Now I use that for turning off the soft keys when reading. Much nicer than having to go back to the home screen.

Epic woes

Ok to make a long story short, after I themed a whole bunch of themes I did not like the end result so i wanted to go back to where I was before. I loaded my backup and everything backed up but its like the backup was not clean or something because my phone has just been to unstable and acting stupid. It force closes some things and I have to pull the batt about once a day because I can't answere the phone. Also something about google services framework keeps popping up when I call someone. I am fed up. I am on srf 1.2 with the genocide 2.0 kernal.
Any thoughts on what I should do? Odin back and start over? Or is there anything better out there with gingerbread? I have not looked into anything current. Seems like there is a lot of stuff I have not seen before. Looks rather cofusing. Cwm5, selfkang cm7, acs rom manager. I am at. A loss for words. Can anyone help me.

this. No really!
if youre looking to start over i can tell you i went from stock to acs ics v5.5 right before marcusant stopped dev and did his red revival rom. it was smooth, just a little buggy, but was eating my battery alive. I then switched to legendary 2.1 which was ok but in the end i opted for cleangb. its just simpler and i dont really need all that much. good luck
Ok so I cleared data and that solved the google.framework issues. But my gps button on the pulldown bar does not turn gps on. I also still can not send audio messages with the stock messanger.
Any thoughts? Should I be looking at gingerbread at this point or should I wait for a while?

Does it work if you turn it on in settings? If not then Odin back to EC05, check GPS, if it works root and flash your ROM. Check it. If it works THEN do an advanced data restore from your nandroid and see if it still works. If it is broken then, try a factory data reset. If it is working again then reinstall apps from the market and set everything up again without restoring the bad data, or restore from an older nandroid where it was working.
The gps symbol does not show up when I turn it on in settings, but I have noticed that if I use an app that requires gps to be on it will take me to the settings menue where I can turn it on. Depending on the app the symbol sometimes shows up. Gps always seems to work when a gps app needs it. It just really bothers me that the button does not work in the pull down bar.

You will probably have to Odin to EC05, check your button, if working root and flash ROM and check it. Should still work. Do not restore all your data. You will need to do a Titanium backup and pick and choose apps and data you must have.

You do realize that the GPS icon will only appear on the status bar when GPS is being used, right? Just because you have it turned on, whether with the pull-down menu or not, does not mean it will appear on the status bar. It may be on, but in standby waiting for an app that uses it. GPS kills battery, thus standby mode when not in use.
That said, while I don't know which ROM you've been using, most--if not all--generally "light up" the toggle buttons when something is turned on, even if it's in standby mode. Does the toggle button change state, i.e., light up, change color, or switch between "ON" and "OFF" when you toggle it?
I am on srf 1.2 and genocide 2 kernal. That makes sense, yes the button changes color and says on and off. I just thought that the icon used to appear when I pushed it. Maybe not.

I don't remember SRF 1.2 doing that, but it's been a few months since I was on SRF or Android 2.2. What's important to know is that as long as the icon switches state and GPS works when you need it, everything is functioning properly. IIRC, for the past few ROMs I've used the icon is only present when GPS is actively functioning, not when in standby mode. This is a good thing, it lets you know when it's burning up battery.
BTW, SRF 1.2 with Genocide 2 was my ROM of choice for Android 2.2! I recommend you upgrade to a 2.3 ROM these days though. To be honest, I've only used EpicMTD CM7, but it's awesome. The devs are knocking out issues very quickly, and we should be an officially supported CyanogenMod device soon.
Thanks for all your help. I guess I will not worry about it then. So I am kind of new to all the gingerbread roms and stuff. Is there or can you post some links that would be helpful for me to read? I have heard about acs rom manager and selfkang cm7 and cwm 5. I know nothing about any of this stuff. Ever since I rooted and romed with srf and genocide I never kept up to date with all this new stuff. Thanks

[Q] cm9 buttons dont illuminate

I installed cm9 after using cm7 and cant get the four buttons on the phone to light up. They are accessible but not illuminated. has anyone else encountered this problem.
Also I was wondering if the Cm7 uses more battery than cm9
You have to use auto brightness.
cm9 illumination
If you mean display auto brightness ok but when I'm outside I can't see the screen...guess ibhave to toggle back and forth. I had switched back to cm7. In your opinion is 9 worth changing to. It seems like in 7 everything is working pretty well.
Thank you for the reply

Ive been using the dinc2 since last July and I got used to the buttons to the point that I noticed they didn't light up, but until I saw this post, I never considered it a "problem". Since I knew where they were and didn't need to see them to use them. If they ever do "fix" this issue I hope they allow for a settings option to keep them turned off. I actually enjoy them off, in my mind its just one more security feature. I know when my wife tries to use my phone she needs to see them, and since recently rooting to CM9 I don't want her bricking my phone. Because of the unlit buttons she has stopped using my phone (she uses some cheap AT&T phone, refuses to switch to Verizon). Just throwing my opinion in the mix. Thanks for the post as well I wasn't sure it was intentional or not.

I believe in the advanced brightness settings under CMSettings you can do just that. Whenever I run a CM rom, I always go to the brightness settings under edit Other Levels and set all the softkey values on the far right column to 255 so they're always the same brightness and look nice. I like the sheen they have, but I can only see it when they're close to full brightness.
If you did the opposite, set all the values to 0 and then click Save and Apply Values at the top of that screen, they should, theoretically, never turn on.
Thank you ....as I am new to a rooted phone and this forum I didn't know those adjustments were available...learn something new everyday ......
Does cm9 drain the battery alot quicker or is it unnoticeable

Post issues found in the ICS Leak (I927UCLG9)

its real nice to finally have some ICS goodness on my phone, but i have found some issues.
my Motorola Roadster 2 bluetooth speakerphone does not work well with this version of ICS. will not let me use the call/text button.
i am finding some apps not working correctly, i.e. Pushover - the notifications do not make a sound. Not sure if that is an app issue, or an ICS issue.
*edit* ok so it seems that i am not getting any notification sounds. sms, voicemail, etc...
also the volume in general does not seem as loud as the 2.3.6 firmware was.
anyone else find any issues?
*UPDATE* after wiping within cwmr most of my issues were no longer present. the only problem i had still was that notification sounds didnt work after a couple hours. i dont know the cause, but i used audio manager widget and set the profile to loud, and restarted phone. havent had them go out since.

atleast it is not me.
i am going to reflash my phone to see if it may be an issue with not clearing out the phones memory and storage first...
My wifi didn't work for a while. It would see my access point but wouldn't connect. Reset the router and everything went back to normal. GPS works, Stereo BT/OBEX works, 4G works, camera works. Those were my big items, as I'm sure they are most people's.
My only issues are that I can't switch to 2g (At&t rom....) and how friggin Touch-wizzy everything is. I was expecting them to embrace the whole holo thing a lot more, but all the buttons feel like they belong in GB, same with the notification menu and the settings icons.
EDIT: I am on rogers, in case any rogers people see this so they know that everything works on our network
i wiped via cwmr and reflashed the ics rom. notifications work again. have not rooted yet, wondering if that may have been an issue with it...
Changing the lcd DPI causes the rom to corrupt i guess, since when i do it, after the reboot, i get to the samsung "logo" and then black screen, and it feels like the device has shut down. The only app that would say "success" when i change the value is Lcd Density Modder.
- i had the notification sound bug, but then i changed the notification sounds to my likings, and then i used Audio Manager widget to set the volume loud, no problems ever since.
ok rooted and all is fine. maybe i just had a bad flash. my bluetooth speakerphone still doesnt work, but that is an issue that i will have to research
For me, i had the only issue with ICS (excluding the known thing with the keyboard not flashing) - timezones from 2011 year with wrong summer times.
Luckyly fixed it with timezone fixer from google play.
Tethering doesn't work, seems to be broken and results in a blackscreen.. Both Usb and Wifi Hotspot give this issue.. Anyone else getting this
One weird thing my phone does is when it's been asleep for a while, the lockscreen clock will fall behind and when I wake it up, it'll catch up a couple dozen minutes at a time.

I've rogers version but unlocked and working with a local carrier. Wifi is not a problem at all, i'm getting the same speed and used wifi continuously for over 2 hrs to download all my apps back after the update.
When typing with the keyboard, pressing the alt. Key once makes it select all the special characters. I liked the older one where if you press it once, it operates just once when selecting the special character, and pressing it twice makes it select more than one. Not that big of an issue but to some people it may be.
Also, the brightness thing. When I turn off the screen, and turn it on again, it flashes from the highest brightness to the current.

On AT&T here, and having wifi issues as well... Once the phone drops wifi at idle, it doesn't want to pick it back up unless I turn wifi off and back on again. Setting the wifi to never sleep has been my only workaround.
Also having some issues with the button backlights. If I don't touch the phone long enough for the button backlight to turn off, touching the buttons won't turn the light back on. Touching the screen turns the backlight on again, but it's slightly annoying.
I haven't noticed any wifi issues and I use my Glide exclusively as a wifi device. I'm copying my backup of Inception v2 back right now though because the battery drain on the ICS ROM is definitely an issue. Losing like 10% an hour with my phone just sitting there with the screen off.

Have you ever took note of your battery life with a custom ROM or kernel? When I picked up my Glide it had a stock ROM but I only had it for an hour before I put a custom on it. I didn't mess with the stock one at all so I can't compare to stock 2.3.5/6. But with Inception v2/ardatdat, it was definitely better.
I was going to restore my backup but copying it back to my phone made me realize how painful it is to copy backups with CWMR 6 compared to 5. That new blobs folder makes so many files that it took 3 hours to copy 3 of my backups over USB. Ouch.
But since last night, the battery life seems to be behaving better. Its been sitting here and not just dying. I'm wondering if it could be the battery stats file. Maybe I'll try wiping it. I'm sure once we get a lower voltage kernel and I can underclock with profiles for the screen-off and stuff, it'll be fine again.
Unrelated but has anyone taken a screenshot with the ROM yet? ICS is supposed to have it built in, power button + volume down at the same time for a few seconds from what I read, but didn't seem to work.
Edit: Its home + power button at the same time.

There are some cool features tied in with touch wizard specific to our pen capability. If you go custom you may lose that. So I would look more at rooting like such. Do I want root to bypass tethering lockdown from the vendor or to make backups with Titainium? Do I really need to overclock or undervolt? Do a new ROM's features negate the potential loss of pen related features

1. Free wifi tethering (it's a must for me since T-mobile charges $15 for me to use data that I'm already paying for).
2. Wifi calling (good option to have in case I do not have signals) - the jedi 10 rom offers this.
3. Multi-windown (any app) - a cool feature. I don't think I will use it much though. But it's good to use to show off.
4. Samsung keyboard with auto-correct. I wanted to keep the samsung keyboard so that I can use the s-pen sometimes. But the jedi rom has the auto-keyboard switcher embedded.
??????
I rooted my phone I think but now I dont know what to do next! How do I pick a rom and where do I go to pick a rom or download one? Also what are kernals and overclicking?

Before you do anything else, search "nandroid" learn all about it, and make one.

I was stock until about 3 days ago. I moved into the Jedi ROM. I used CWM, the non-touch version. I don't know if I'm old school or worried about a non responsive screen but eh.
Originally I'd just thought to stay stock and not rooted so I could get OTA'S. Though with a ROM, I'm already miles ahead of the game.
As another person stated, using the tethering has really been good for me. I'm paying $70 a month, $15 more for the hot spot would of been ridiculously overkill.
Also, I've never seen or witnessed a phone become so buttery smooth and perform so well. I'm happy. ^_^
Just make sure you do back ups through TiBu and do nandroids.

I rooted, went to Jedi ROM, but had issues, like screen tearing, slow response (probably aggressive underclocking) and some other weirdness. Went to Tweaked ROM, and had to pull battery after using CNN app for 5 minutes. Also phone is very slow to wake. Turning screen off makes music player unusable. I think I should go to stock, but I would love to have TSM Parts thing on it. Wonder if there's a way to install it.

This would likely be better off reported in the Tweaked thread...
But, w/ the CNN freeze up (was this an app or website? Reading text or watching video/listening to audio?) was there any FC at all? What kernel were you using? What version of Tweaked were you running, and what sort of options did you have installed? A logcat of such an issue would be immensely helpful Also - were you charging the phone and have the MIUI battery bar active? On other phones I've experienced issues w/ video playback and that combo.
Turning screen off makes music player unusable - what do you mean? The long-press volume controls weren't working? The music stops? What app were you using to listen to music?
Very slow to wake - is there anything more specific you can offer here? Like an amount of time it takes to wake? That really shouldn't differ from stock at all - and there will always be a bit of lag there (though I never have anything more than a second or so).
And fwiw TSMParts is regrettably not an independently functional sort of apk. It requires a bunch of other edits throughout aspects of /system to actually work. But man that would be nifty
Fyi...noting what I said before, I am currently running one of Tesh's rooted stock ROMs for the international version. I can run backups, do tethering (no carrier lockdown for international), and run another kernel if I wish. It also allows me to use some of the Exposed installer tweaks to keep the Note2 touchwiz benefits and still use things like per app resultions and all apps in multiwindow.

I didn't really so a lot of troubleshooting. It was a CNN app. I pushed Back button from an article and got a black screen only with top bar active. Pushed power button, screen turned off. Then it stayed off. Had to do a battery pull. Not charging, no MIUI battery bar.
As for music, turning off the screen makes it stutter and slow down. Turning screen back on fixed the issue. I am guessing with screen off, clock rate is way too low to support music playback.
Very slow to wake could mean 2-3 seconds after I push the power or home button. Same thing with phonecalls. I can hear the phone ring but screen would stay black. 2-3 seconds later I can finally see who's calling.
I guess I can resolve most of these issues by tweaking clock rates, just wish I had time to read up on it.
Edit: Forgot to mention, I am on 1.4. Downloaded and flashed yesterday.

Hmm... my thoughts:
- That may have just been wonkiness in the CNN app - not sure if anything I did could impact something in the way you described (but of course I could be wrong).
- Yeah that is way slow - and uncharacteristic from my experiences at least
- That plus the music issue makes me wonder - are you just using the stock kernel? If so you can't do much in the way of clock rate tweaking, but I also find it curious as I've heard little in the way of issues regarding the stock kernel.
- Did you do a full data wipe before installing?
Regardless - I am sorry to hear about the poor outcome - feel free to PM me if you want any suggestions/help troubleshooting. I'm not the best at it (especially remotely), but I'll try
Sorry for the off-topic stuff OP!
The question doesn't make sense.
Rooting just means you unlock the root account on the phone to have superuser access. This is required by some useful apps (ProxyDroid, Paragon NTFS & HFS+ which lets you mount any USB stick or hard drive using an OTG cable, backup programs...). You can very well keep the stock firmware and just root it, which is what I ended up doing on the Note II.
On my previous Galaxy S2 CM10 was working like a champ, so I figured I would try it on the Note II... I think at this point it's a total disaster and completely unusable, just not ready for prime time. Bluetooth is completely broken, the camera doesn't work, the video driver has problems, and most of all you lose a lot of the cool things you get with the stock firmware (multi-windows, stylus-specific features, etc...). Good enough if you're contributing to the ROM development and testing for bugs and missing features, but painfully not ready for prime time. The big problem is that you just don't know what feature will break next and will let you down right when you need it.
So for me, it's stock until CM10.1 goes RC. But of course I rooted it because I want to be able to use some apps that require rooting.
Note that some Samsung apps (Readers Hub) detect SuperSU and refuse to run. Uninstall SuperSU and use Superuser instead, and use Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper to temporarily unroot the phone if you need to use them.
Rooted on Stock Rom is the way to go.
I stay on stock ROM for Wi-Fi calling, but I had it rooted in order to transfer application data.
Backup your efs as well, because there has been several people that have lost their imei.

[Q] Graphic glitches and other problems

So I've been having a bit of trouble with my t989 lately, when I try unlocking the phone I will either get a black screen (the lock screen will appear for a split second before going blank if I hit the lock button again) or it won't track my finger movements on the screen. If I manage to unlock the device I end up seeing numerous graphic glitches ranging from the bar at the top w/ the clock/battery meter just gone and the keyboard not working.
I'm runing CM9.0.0 because I had issues with 10.2 (battery wouldn't charge) and 10.1.3 (similar to my lock screen issues but not as severe, still agitating) and also 9.1 which had the same exact issues as I'm having now. I've tried installing with different gapps but the same thing happens. The phone will work for a day or two, then the glitches come. After resetting, everything is normal for a day or so, then it's normal a few hours, etc. The time is getting narrower between reboots and it's a bit frustrating.
Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong, if anything? I flash via twrp and wipe, then install the rom, then install gapps, then reboot, wait 20min, reboot, and go about my business w/ the setup and such. I would be fine going back to 10.1.3 but jellybean roms and snapchat don't really like to work together on this phone for some reason. It's really the only app I use because it seems like the only way my friends want to communicate nowadays, so I'd prefer to stay on ics if possible...
If anyone can give any insight I'd really appreciate it

Have you tried using Odin to flash back to stock? That is usually the recommended step if you are having problems with custom ROMs.
And the newest stock is 4.1.2, so at least you wouldn't have to be on ICS.

I'll give that a try. Odin is just the program used to root originally, correct? Also, I want to stay on ICS if possible. So after doing that I'm going to try CM9 again and see how that works.
Anyway, the past few days I've been using AOKP mr2 milestone 1 and it's been okay. For some reason the battery life is bad even with juice defender and a task killer taking care of things. In a matter of minutes after clearing tasks I'm down from ~350mb of ram free to 60. Is that normal with that rom?
I'm not sure what to do at this point. I'm not the best with technology but i figured i was smart enough to figure this out...
bump.
I still haven't tried flashing w/ odin yet. Does anyone know where I can find a gingerbread stock rom? I've been looking for a while and can only find the jellybean one. Since I want to stay on ICS what I want to do is go from gingerbread and up to that rather than downgrading from the jellybean stock rom if that makes sense.
