I'm going to start this off by saying that I'm using Cyanogen Mod 6 and I've wiped between every nightly and before installing RC2.
The AOSP messenger that comes with Cyanogen is great. In fact, it's nearly perfect and that's why I'm going to the bother of making this thread. With every release of CM6 for the Evo, I have been unable to send messages longer than 160 characters. It seems that GSM networks can take large messages and split them up before sending them to the recipient. However, the Evo runs on Sprint's CDMA network. CDMA networks unfortunately don't split messages up well. The stock HTC Sense messenger app sidesteps this problem by manually splitting the messages before sending them out. Unfortunately, cyanogen's messenger doesn't have an option for message splitting.
I know this is a small thing since most text messages aren't very large, but it is incredibly annoying. Even worse, if I accidentally try to send one, I am unable to send anymore messages until I get an error messages a few minutes later. Strangely, this problem doesn't seem to affect everyone. In fact, it seems to be dependent on location. On vacation, I was able to send a large message, but I can't when I'm at home.
Can anyone else running CM6 test this to see how it works for you? I know I could switch to Handcent SMS since they have an option to split messages, but I love the look and feel of the AOSP messenger.
I'm having the exact same issue. I'm thinking about getting away from CM6. Too many weird bugs, like the voice mail.
Its a problem with cm6. I use handcent. You can set it in options to split texts unlike the stock in cm6. I thought something was wrong with the rom with freezing or my reception. Its not. Its the SMS program. I also made handcent look like the stock SMS. Instead of the bubbles. No more worring about freezing after I go over. Don't know why there isn't a setting for this in stock or somewhere on phone. Since most if not all the other SMS do this on their own or has a setting for it. Lame...

You can change alot in handcent. Instead of bubbles can do the threaded style like stock. Change color on everything to match stock. Just wish put a little more space between the messages.. other than that looks the same except the top part where all the messages from everyone you received or sent to is different than stock and can't change. Play around with it. I was exactly like you. Love stock. Even switched to fresh new rom and was on there for few days. Wentbon cm6 topic and someone suggested hamdcent and change the options to look stock. Gave it a try. Not exactly like stock but close and don't worry about freezes..

Thanks, I will try Handcent now.
Uhg. This has been addressed a million times. It is *not* a bug in CM6. The stock AOSP messenger app *does not split messages* The stock HTC messages does. Handcent does. This is like saying it's a bug that Twiteur doesn't split your tweets up automatically.
I wish they'd add this functionality, sure, but it's NOT a bug.
My advice is to either use a 3rd party app (I don't like any of them, personally,) go back to using a Sense based ROM or to just simply use e-mail if you can't be brief in your SMS messages. Remember, the first S stands for *SHORT*
Just saying.
Cyanogen did NOT like make the messaging app. People keep trying to blame Cyanogen for this and that is incorrect.
Its the stock messaging app for Android. This is not a bug!
I understand some peoples frustration with this but stop blaming cyanogen for this! If you want to blame someone then blame Sprint for using CDMA.
I don't like the fact that the STOCK email app doesn't do exchange HTML email! Do I blame Cyanogen? NO!
I would have to buy Touchdown from the market to have HTML email. Maybe one day CyanogenMod might add it who knows but it is what it is.
Download Handcent or whatever from the market or load another ROM geez!
Having said that there are MANY users myself included that send 160+ txt messages just fine with Cyanogen, myself included. Which would lead me to believe its something not related to the stock messaging app.
MrDSL, I'm using handcent and after the helpful post from other users explaining what was going on, I have corrected the issue. You must admit, that Cyanogen doesn't handle everything perfect. I've flashed Fresh and the rooted Stock and I never had the same issues I've had with Cyanogen, such as the voice mail and the text message limit. So before you think everyone is attacking your bible of a rom, you should take a step back and breathe.
I've read a lot of your post in the past and you are a very helpful person here to everyone, but you shouldn't get so defensive.
Landmine: Fresh and rooted stock are both Sense based roms. CM is an AOSP based rom. The AOSP messaging app does not auto-split sms messages. Cyanogen didn't write the app. As said before, it's not a bug.

Again, I'm not saying it is a bug with Cyanogen, but stating that you must be able to understand where the idea is coming from when people are using Sense based roms and having issues with Cyanogen.

This topic is solely about txt messages over 160..Thats all I have responded to. Does cyanogenmod have problems? Well of course it does I never implied it didn't.
What I am correcting is this is not a bug or a fault of the ROM. Nothing more nothing less.
The only reason this doesn't happen in sense ROM's is because HTC has their own messaging app that seperates them. So using Handcent with cyanogen is no different thats all.

We do and its exactly why we are trying to inform people of the correct information. We may be a bit harsh sometimes I'll give you that
I can't stand the "go send a email" comments. Depending on the words and the size of the words its easy to pass the 160 mark in a text and not really say that much. Unless you do cuz, u, etc.. I like to fully spell words out.. except definitely for some really reason I do def... some people don't really have much to say and just text. While texting you think of more to say or something pops up and keep texting than you would otherwise on the phone. Or its just me everyone is different.

I agree ^^
I just installed King's Ultra FroYo Unleashed and I love it.
I still have not had this phone long, just a week. Coming from an LG Lotus it's quite a change. Haven't learned everything yet.
Anyway, was wondering about a few things I can't figure out:
1 - I'm sure like many of you, you are using Handcent SMS. I can't figure out a way to disable the SMS notifications so that I don't get two notifications for every SMS.
2 - I'm not sure if it's a bug with the current build or if it's just messed up on my phone. The loading or sync (not sure which) circular arrows that appear in the notification bar have an issue with the graphics. It switches between two different types of graphics so it looks kind of gnarly. Is there some way I can replace the graphic file to fix this?
3 - Can't figure out a way to make my own pictures display on my contacts instead of their Facebook pics. Many of my contacts are synced to Facebook, which I like, but I want to be able to set my own pictures for them if I want. When I edit the contact and select the picture, it will still only show their Facebook pic. I'd rather not turn the syncing off, I like it. Is there something I'm missing?
Overall, I'm really starting to like my new EVO because of this rom. I tried MIUI based on other recommendations, but I just didn't like it. Was too buggy also. This rom is great. Very fast, much more battery efficient, especially for me using netarchy kernel, than it was on MIUI. I think I'll be sticking with this rom.
Thanks for all help answering my questions.
You'd be better off posting this in his forum

Unfortunately I don't have user permissions yet.
Ok #1. click on stock messages app. When loaded hit menu then settings. Uncheck any boxes that have notifications.
#2. Yes that's a problem on his rom.
#3.while in contacts app go to whomever and click on them once it will open that persons info at top left is a camera click that choose gallery and get your pic.

i absolutely love cm7 but the biggest hassle for me is it not having an enter key anymore like the old 2.2 keyboards did.
i really dislike not having the ability to use the enter key while texting, due to the fact that it helps making everything a lot more understandable like when answering several questions within one text message.
i've googled and xda-ed this problem a number of times and haven't found a solution, so would anyone else be willing to give me a heads up on this issue and if it has a fix?
i have the same problem!
bump
any solutions how to remove smile key and back to 'enter' in messages..??
Use a different keyboard? There are other free alternatives on the market.

It really depends on what you're into.
Since getting this phone, I've been getting into 3D gaming like FPS like Modern Combat 3 and CS Portable. The big screen is excellent for such things.
If this is your first ICS phone, I'd suggest trying out the Chrome browser. It has lots of new features and runs very well.
As for utility apps, I use a few and have rooted mine, of course use of Titanium Backup is recommended.
ROMs? Eh...the community is growing so we're getting new ROMs day by day but it's very slow and finding a page that has a list of ROMs and such is rare to find. The one, currently in my signature, is a project I began to create a list with various ROMs and such but no where near complete or finished. I am using the FreeS3 ROM and it is pretty cool although not really different in terms of looks. I got it mostly because I wanted to have scrolling wallpaper. A new ROM popped up that is really for people looking for a drastic change called JellyBomb Domination ROM and can be found here.
Anything else? Hope you enjoy your phone as much as we do
I like the new Swype beta.....it is a superb keyboard IMHO. App backup and restore helped me port all apps from my Photon to my SG III. My son has me using oovoo video chat which is very ez to use for video chat
I've really been digging AOKP. JB is great and Task and Ktoon have done an awesome job.
Root that thing and throw Clark44's FreeGS3 on it, absolutely great ROM

+1 for Swype beta. IMHO It works incredibly well for Swype type typing ( ) and the voice recognition is also very accurate (and fast too!)
Also a fan of Swype. Infinitely better than the stock keyboard.

Since everyone is talking about keyboards...
I use the Thumbs Keyboard the most and have been since I got it with my HTC Evo 4G OG. It was free on the Amazon Appstore for a day through their special promotions (get a paid app for free once a day chosen by Amazon).
There are many different ways to customize the keyboard in terms of looks AND funtionality. You can put keys in many different orders. I like it because everything is nearby like the alphabet as well as my numbers without having to use the long-press feature (long pressing a key for a few seconds until it becomes a secondary key stroke like the B into a 5 or something.)
The many different skins are beautiful and the keyboard was designed for use with your thumbs especially when used in a horizontal orientation. It is made more so for bigger screened phones like ours and works very well. You can also change the sounds that each stroke makes as well as vibration on or off which is standard with most Android keyboards nowadays.
I used to use Swype all the time, but it got me upset lots of times when typing "or" or "out" when it would instead put a "our" or vice versa for any of the others. I used to only use Swype for when I had long pieces to write like a full fledged e-mail and fix the mistakes when I was done or writing a rough draft and then switch back to my other keyboard. Swype is excellent for typing without your eyes directly on the keypad if you are like me and have memorized the QWERTY lines and know when to stop and where to turn. I WOULDN'T ADVISE IT FOR ANYONE, but sometimes I would text with Swype while driving by keeping my eyes on the road and moving one finger across the keyboard. lol
Swype is great, but I personally prefer Thumbs. I would recommend trying as many keyboards as you can find if you want to find the best keyboard to use. You may end up being like me and keep all or most of them and switch back and forth depending on what you type at the moment.
This happened to me on my old note 2 on many various rom's, now it's happening again on my new note 2 running novella...
After sending a certain amount of text messages or mms's, it'll stop displaying new text messages and if I go into the text message list, nothing is there at all... Until I reboot, then all my new and old messages show up again.
Any idea's? Being a heavy texter this gets really annoying, it's happened to me 5 or 6 times today at least.
It happens in Go SMS Pro, Samsung default SMS and any other SMS app.
Found these two threads
Text Messages Disappear @ Android Central
Note 2 Text Messaging But @ Phandroid
Are there any reports of this happening on the S4? I saw it was happening on the S2 and S3.
So if it's happening on the S4, then the Note 3 is out of the question for me and I'll buy another phablet to avoid this issue altogether.
Sounds random among Samsung devices. Hasn't happened to me yet either stock or non-stock.

From what it sounds like and all I gathered from the 2 threads specifically about other Note 2 users having the same problem is TouchWiz is the culprit.
Dialing my own number letting it pick up and go to voicemail and then the dialer/phone fc'ing and hanging up afterwards fixes the problem until it randomly decides to happen again.
I'm thinking of trying a non-touchwiz rom and seeing what happens.

Never had that problem with TW.

Yup TouchWiz seems to have been the cause of my problems, been using PACman for a week now and not a single text message disappearing error any.
Just kinda sucks not usng TouchWiz it feels like something is missing a lot of the time, first time I went to take a screenshot I tried to use the S-Pen three times in a row then remembered. LMAO
Giving MyRom Revolution 7.1 a shot, it looks like the perfect mix of TouchWiz UI and Others...

Not sure what it is that's exactly causing the problem, I've even tried disabling samsung's sms app and it still happened sometimes, I never changed anything in the app settings, but it is odd that when I don't use a touchwiz rom I don't encounter the problem at all.
I'm really hoping they fixed it in the s4 and 4.2.2 and it'll be fixed forr the Note, S2 and S3 with that new release of jelly bean.
Trying out MyMiUi 3.5.10, to see what happens, kept getting a lot of FC's in MyRom Revo 7.1, but I do wanna keep some touchwiz stuff and it'll also be an interesting test to see if even though there's very lil tw integration if the problem still presists with that lil bit of tw incorporated in the system.

No real way to count and see how many messages I have when/till it happens.

Well uninstalling Stock TouchWiz SMS App is a solution pretty much I've found it hard to trigger the bug again it really only rarely ever happens anymore, before it would happen multiple times a day being forced to reboot and or dial your own number... So if ya don't wanna go with a CM Rom, this is the best way I know to avoid it from happening so often.
Im on stock touchwiz and I have over 10k messages stored on phone. Stock messaging app aways crashes when I try access thread with thousands of messages but go sms has no problem with this high count.

That's what I've been using too GoSMS, GoSMS has a default/uninstalled stock sms app option, where if ya uninstall the stock app it'll act as the stock app.
