I can't get Gingerbread on my DHD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bought a used HTC Desire HD A9191. It has 2.2 android.
I tried to update to 2.3 ( Gingerbread ) by the “over the air” from Settings>About phone>System software update> Check now. It says “Your phone is up to date: there are no updates for your phone”
That is crazy because the gingerbread is available OTA since May 2011.

I tried to access the root by ConnectBot by “su” : permission denied
I used root checker : no root access and no busybox
I noticed that Security is OFF “S-OFF”
So, I have no root but I have S-OFF
Is that phone modded (or rooted) or it's stock?
How can I get Gingerbread either by OTA or ROM ?
Note: the phone is not branded, I think. It has no logos neither at boot nor on packaging. Also no mention of it in the purchase receipt
I’m sorry if I talked to much, I have been searching the forums in hope to understand the status of the phone and what can I do for it but no luck.
I’m kind of geek but it’s my first android. I don’t want to wreck it.
I appreciate any help and Thank you for your interest

yes, the phone has been modded, but it has a stock rom on it now. but the previous owner left the radio s-off.
the phone seems to be branded. if you look at the build number, it says x.xx.415.x . on an unbranded the 3rd number is 405 (x.xx.405.x).
i'm not sure why you don't get the update, but maybe it's because you have radio s-off.
if i were you, i'd root the phone and put a custom rom on it. just follow the guides here.
because you have radio s-off, you just need to create a gold card and install the 1.32 rom through the bootloader.
Sent out of my Free Candy Van.

I decided to follow your advice and rooted my DHD
I read several guides and I used this one
- While on your phone, go to Settings>Applications>Development, and make sure "USB Debugging" is enabled -
- Install and then open Visionary+
- Tap on Temproot now
- Tick Run visionary.sh after root" and "set system r/w after root" (optional. I guess it's mostly a taste option)
- Tap on Attempt permroot now
- Allow super user access if needed  This is recurrent, always be on the look out for such requests and allow access
- Wait for reboot
- You can test root availability, check the bottom of the guide
Click to collapse
I verified root access with root checker . Also,It said that I have Busybox V.1.15.2 (which i didn't install and not listed in app manager )
I didn't downgrade my DHD to 1.32.405.6 WWE, do I need to do that? ( It was said that it may cause wifi or GPS problem )
As mentioned above, it said "ACE PVT SHIP S-OFF RL" in recovery mode
What is the difference between SHIP S-OFF and ENG S-OFF and Radio S-OFF?
Do I need to do a Radio S-OFF or ENG S-OFF or both as in the following quote??
- Extract the Radio S-OFF zip file into a folder on your computer
- If by any chance you have disconnected the phone from your computer, reconnect it using "Charge only" mode
- Make sure you have HTC Sync installed on your computer
- Make sure your phone screen is on at all times as you may need to allow superuser access. I recommend disabling screen timeout
- Open "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe" (Windows 7, right click & run as administrator)
- Choose the first option (RADIO S-OFF, Super-CID and Sim Unlock)
- Click "Do It"
- Your phone is now Radio S-OFF.
- Extract the eng s-off zip file into a folder on your computer
- Connect the phone to your computer in "Charge only" mode
- Run "Desire HD easy s-off.exe" from the extracted folder
- Click "S-OFF" it
- Your phone is now ENG S-OFF
-You can test that your phone is ENG S-OFF and Radio S-OFF and it is recommended that you do. Check the bottom of the guide
- Force closes may occur, in this case reboot, and it should be just fine
Click to collapse

So, I installed Rom Manager and flash ClockWorkMod 5.0.1.0, then did a ROM backup
Then, i went ahead and did the Radio S-OFF then the ENG S-OFF (ENG bootloader)
I confirmed in bootloader, I have "ACE PVT ENG S-OFF"
In System info sub-menu in bootloader
CID-11111111
OS Ver.-1.83.415.4
I guess everything went OK in-spite of having "OS Ver.-1.83.415.4"
OR do i still need to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 WWE ?
I was thinking of flashing "Android Revolution HD™ 5.2.6" ROM, do any body have other recommendations?
It needs Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2, do i flash radio first or ROM?

do i still need to downgrade to 1.32.405.6 WWE ?

It doesn't 'need' Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2 - it's just the recommended one.
Flashing the radio can be dangerous - tread carefully.
If you've got S-Off and root access, you should be able to simply flash a new ROM from the SD-Card. The downgrade shouldn't be necessary.
Check out LeeDroid and - my personal favourite - Virtuous Unity.

[Q] HTC Desire HD Unlock problem

I've just bought a HTC Desire HD locked to Orange. I insered an o2 Sim but upon boot i didn't get the unlock message box where i could enter a code (after spending £15 on one). So i read about flashing a custom rom and this should work.
I ran Easy Radio tool v2_2 doing the option for Radio S-OFF, Super-CIDE and SimUnlock but this didn't work. The post also said to run EasyS-OFF which i did as well
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403
I then flashed Android REvolution HD 2.0.6
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040
following his link for radio update and isntalling S-Off Bootloader.
The rom flashed fine but after booting back into phone and putting in my o2 sim I'm still getting "Limited service" on the lock screen.
Can anyone help me where I'm going wrong. The phone works fine if it has Orange Sim but won't accept anythign else.

In bootloader screen at top you should have eng s-off then
For the radio s-off and simunlock that's needed to unlock your branding check under system info on bootloader see if says cid 11111 if so then maybe change your apn manually for the network you sNt to use if not maybe it would be a good idea to downgrade back to 1.32 and back to original state and start again check downgrade 1.72 to 1.32 in this forum and then check my guide on how to flash radio.img the links are there to unlock your phone before flashing anything

Old Radio
You have an older radio it appears, flash the recommended radio off the Android Revolution HD page, then write about the changes if any

Try flashing radio first using the guide it might fix it if not try starting from scratch you might be able to downgrade to a stock Rom which should wipe any branding out altogether

do you run permant root first via visonary
did the radio super cid go through this time ?
if so go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 and do eng s-off
The guide says "Open Visionary and tap temproot, then attempt permroot now. Your device will reboot" which i did and phone rebooted.
When i did the end s-off it said pushing files to SD card and then syncing, then done. How will i know if it succeeded? Is there a way to check?

Just got the DHD from an Ebay seller in Korea. He claimed the phone is unlocked and it was previous lock from KT-Olleh(Korean provider). Haven't got a chance to try out any sim since I am still at work.
I did searched and seem like the seller did perform the One click Radio S-OFF tool. Here are the info from the bootloader screen:

Thanks for the help. Is this the first option you're talking about?
So, in detail, the Root & S-OFF process goes like this:
Install Visionary
Open Visionary and tap temproot, then attempt permroot now. Your device will reboot.
Connect your phone to a computer (make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Connect charge only!)
Open my "Desire HD easy radio tool.exe" (Windows 7, right click & run as administrator), choose the first option, click "Do it"! There may be a SuperUser request on your phone, allow it.
Done. (Remember to click the thanks button)
But you might want to continue if you are a new user:
If you want to flash a radio (to improve signal and battery life) some day, do ENG S-OFF (no need to use Visionary again, just run the tool)
To flash a custom rom: Get Rom manager from the market, which will install a ClockWorkMod recovery for you. Just open it up and tap "Flash ClockworkMod recovery"
Download a custom ROM, put it to your SD, and flash it using Rom manager or ClockworkMod itself. You can access ClockworkMod through Rom manager. It is recommended to do "wipe data / factory reset" in ClockworkMod before installing ROM from SD card.

I will have to do this step if i find out its still locked.
Yeah, that's it. If it is locked, you can also use the SimUnlock option in the tool instead of the first option.

[Q] How do I root version 2.50 on a branded DHD with S-off already?

Hi there,
So I've been using my Vodafone branded DHD for 9 months or so on stock Froyo and then decided to root my phone. After a bit of reading, it seemed Radio S-off was the way to go so I did that on software version 1.32 using Advanced Multi Tools and got Radio S-off and SuperCID. All was working fine however I had to upgrade as I had some Exchange 2010 issues which was fixed in Gingerbread so did the OTA updates which took me to software version 2.50 and now I'm no longer rooted.
So a few questions I have that I couldn't really find an answer to:
How do I get root back on 2.50 considering I've already got Radio S-off?
Do I need the goldcard since it's branded or not? Or just the PD98IMG.zip approach?
How do I get temproot first so I can back up all my data, apps, etc first before wiping or downgrading it? I tried the Temp Root option here but it didn't seem to work.
Here is all the details
Branded on Vodafone - CID was (and maybe is again as I cant check in the bootloader): VODAP021

You can try using gingerbrick if not use an RUU to downgrade to version 1.32 then use one click root to root your DHD
Yeah you will need a goldcard
Sent from my HTC Desire HD A9191 using XDA App
I am not sure you will need to do all that as you already have s-off. That is the most important part. The new hack kit doesn't even require you to downgrade anymore or cause you to lose data. I have been putting my foot in my mouth lately with not so correct advice so I won't say too much more. But I sure wouldn't start over till someone responds that has more knowledge of this. Especially with all the updated tools available at this point.
As Agoattamer mentioned you already have S-OFF and presumably Radio S-OFF too.
The only beast holding you back is attaining root.
I believe fre3vo will root 2.50.xxx.x builds.
From THIS thread, grab the Downgrade.zip from the end of the first post.
Then follow this adapted guide.
Connect Desire HD to a computer. Charge only, USB Debugging enabled!
Open up a cmd and go to Downgrade folder, execute commands:
Code:
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
adb shell
./data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FBB00000 -end FFFFFFFF

That should root your handset. Now just install SuperUser from the market. You'll probably need busybox too, again grab that from the market after SuperUser.
Let us know if that works.
Credits to jkoljo for the original guide.
@4tifjaved, thanks for your response. Gingerbreak unfortunately didn't seem to work.
@Agoattamer, thanks for your suggestion. I tried what @andyharney suggested but it doesn't seem to have become rooted - e.g. Root Checker still says it's not rooted and I can't use a screenshot application as an example.
It scanned through various regions but in the middle of all the text that it showed, it had:
Code:
Potential exploit area found at address fbb6cc00:1400.
Payload verification failed.
...if that means something?
Any further guidance would be appreciated.
Any further suggestions?
I've searched through the forums but am not sure what to try...
Have you tried this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1259821
After reading abit of the advanced ace hack tool it says not to do it if you have s-off but also says it wont brick but you might have some problems. But if it gives your root then you can flash a new rom, etc via recovery.
Ace Advanced Hack Kit worked

Thanks for your suggestion to try the Ace Advanced Hack Kit. I had seen that kit previously but was a bit concerned with the 'Please do NOT run the hack step if you are already S-OFF' note it had. I think the warning is mainly for if it's S-off and a custom rom.
So I went ahead and used it to root - followed the instructions and within 5 minutes was rooted! It's a great kit, worked well and preserved all data.
Thanks for your help!

Please i need help to remove some apps that i cant use in my HTC Desire HD phone. I bought it off someone who is not reachable anymore.
I have switched off and powered on with down button and this is what i get:

Please from what i can see the phone is s-off. But is it rooted?
What i really need is not to remove the orange apps that came with the phone. Since i do not need them.
Any suggestions?
Help please. I am new to this forum and new to tinkering with phones and would love any help given.
Thanks.
go to the development thread and read the stickies. You will learn everything you need to know and then some.

your phone is already S-OFF, so you don't need to do run anything at all. Go to the play store, install Superuser and update the binary. Reboot and Voilá...you are done.
Thanks @glevitan.
One question, does it affect me when i upgrade to Android 4 and sense 3.6?
Then i have installed superuser but dont know how to update the binary. Any help?

The binary would be the files that are updated from the superuser app.
If you do the OTA update, I believe you lose root, not too sure with that one.
Sent from a dream.

Yeah, the binary is updated from the app. find it in the options menu. It is not suggested to run the OTA update, you will lose root and if the update comes with a bootloader you will lose S-OFF as well. As far as I know, the ICS OTA will patch all known exploits, so you won´t be able to be S-OFF until a new method is found. Just flash the ICS update as a custom rom and you will be fine.
Thanks you guys for ur response. But lets go back a bit.
In my initial post, i put the info i got from the phone. Now, what does ***Locked (OOW) *** and "IMAGE CRC" mean?
Secondly, is the phone rooted?
Thirdly, i have installed the superuser and read a bit on it and what i seem to understand is that with the superuser app, i can grant root access to apps i want to install that needs root access permission.
But the thing is, i do not see the apps already installed on the phone in the superusers list. Which still brings me to my question which is how do i remove the apps that came bundled with orange that i do not need?
One thing i think i should mention is that when i got the phone, it was using an older android version. and by then i did not know anything on rooting os s-off. I saw that a friend of mine, who also got the same model of the phone, had upgraded to the version 2.3.5. So i also upgraded.
but i think that meant that the phone was already s-off before the upgrade and it still remained s-off after the upgrade. I dont know if it was rooted or not. And if it was rooted before the upgrade, is it still rooted?
I have issues with the navigation after the app was updated with the 3D thing. The app keeps launching on its own and drains my battery. Is this as a result of the whole s-off rooting thing?

Have u rebooted the phone? make sure that after updating the binary you reboot the phone. If SU is not working, then try using SuperSU from play store...to check root access or u open an app that requires that or install terminal emulator and type there.....it will prompt u if you were granted SU access or not.

Lollipop is the latest Android version for your device variant which is a LRA.
You can get the 4.21.512.4 RUU here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=66044439&postcount=37
then OTA to 4.21.512.5 but most probably you need to change the CID from SuperCID 11111111 back to stock LRA__001 for OTA to install successfully as explained here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67516629&postcount=26
Then you can install any Marshmallow GSM ROM with Verizon support.
Note : Never ever install any Verizon stock firmware or any GSM firmware to your device, it'll brick the radio and you'll lose network & data.
Think about it before you do it...

It's awesome you actually got great advice and refrences to how to do what you need to do. I'd like to add this though: Consider whether getting Lollipop is worth re-locking and doing the things you need to do, including putting your device from s-off to s-on is worth it. And yes, you can run a RUU executable and extract the rom.zip from your computer's temporary files, but unless you have some mad coding and manual programming experience, with the version of HBOOT you have listed if you want to be s-off again you may be out of luck. or find yourself in a bootloop or your computer unable to find your device, or even unable to access stock recovery even with the correct button sequences. At best, you may find yourself unable to access mms apn settings (not even sure if you need or care about that), and if you can access them (apn and mms settings), unable to get the settings to stick (or actually apply themselves so your phone even uses them at all), or only have internet access but no mms even with the exact settings for mms you need put into a third-party texting app such as textra. etc.
if you are already or end up s-on and updated to the "latest and greatest" for your M8, maybe everything will work out perfectly for you . But, just something to thing about before doing all of those things. If you are lucky enough to get a bonafide XDA member's attention and help, as you have already, you are still by default expected to think of these things and do your own research. What you probably won't find out along the way is that when you run into some strange problem, there's no one knowledgeable to help you decipher it. There's tons of unanswered posts on this forum alone that have been viewed many times, that go unanswered.

That's a wrong advise and wrong understanding.
Once a device is S-Off, there is NO NEED to relocking bootloader and there is NO NEED to change S-Off to S-On.
Only S-On device needs relocking bootloader to install signed firmware and signed RUU. S-On device can't install unsigned firmware or RUU.
S-Off device can install any unsigned or signed firmware and RUU (no relocking is needed and not advisable)

thanks,so my device will still ***UNLOCKED*** after i install RUU right?
btw we dont have verizon provider on my country ,thats mean i cant do OTA update ?
so i guess RUU if my only option to update my device,?it is possible for my device to use marsmallow or nougat?

Leave it UNLOCKED so it will still be UNLOCKED after RUU is installed.
Whatever you do now or later ... no need to relock it, leave it UNLOCKED.
You can do OTA as this is not a Verizon device but LRA. Now you can't OTA because you have a Verizon ROM running. RUU 4.21.512.4 is stock LRA, you'll get OTA notification once you install it.
The only thing is you need to change SuperCID 11111111 to LRA__001 to proceed OTA (as experience by other user in the above link I gave you).
Frankly speaking I don't see any good reason to have SuperCID on this variant.
Once you updated to Lollipop you can use Marshmallow ROM which support Verizon (there are a few of them). Nougat .. not so sure but you can always try later after you updated to lollipop but definitely won't work on your current firmware which is a KitKat.
