[Q] R800x 2.3.2 not working with gingerbreaker - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to use gingerbreak 1.20 on my r800x 2.3.2 and it just kept running the exploit in the app for well over half an hour with no reboot or change. Is it possible to run the root on the r800x or did i just somehow screw up?

This is the people get flamed ...... lol
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk

Well at least its in the right section and not in general. Suppose its better than nothing
You cannot root the r800x normally like the rest of us (since verizon patched the gingerbreak loophole in 2.3.2 before they released it). See the [How-to] R800x Root thread since you will need to unlock your bootloader to be able to root.

If you need translation to "me not think good" english, look here after looking at the first posted link

I know it is just easier to post, but really, do look through the forums a little (try search) to see if something comes up before posting.
The issue with the R800x (CDMA Verizon version of the SonyEricsson Xperia Play) is that Verizon subtly changed around a few bits of the inner workings on the ROM prior to release in order to close the GingerBreak exploit hole. We still have not found a suitable exploit to root without unlocking the bootloader.
Currently in order to root, you must unlock your bootloader and then flash in a "su" binary and a SuperUser app. Mind you, the SE method of unlocking bootloaders will _WIPE_ your phone. No exclusions. Originally SE bowed to Verizon pressure and would not release codes or methods for unlocking bootloaders for the CDMA variant (r800X). However, Mills and Asher (wonderful folks, those) did a bit of handy-work and pulled how to convert our CDMA MEID into an unlock code (much like how GSM IMEI can be converted into one).
Luckily they have already found ways to re-lock the bootloader as well for the GSM variant. It may work for the CDMA, but not sure yet. I don't know of anybody testing it out.
Blagus has also been incredibly influential as well in helping development along.
However it comes down to this: No publicly known and working exploits for current versions of the r800X Xperia Play exist at this time.

Confused with Debrading and Rooting...SOS, help pls?

Hi everybody, Frist if all I apology if this is a repost and dumb question. Feel free do give a link that can answer my confussion.
I have Rogers branded Xperia Arc (LT15a.181). Now I want to debrand it, remove this junks from Rogers, unlock bootloader abd then root. I also want to upgrade to 2.3.3 as I host my protect 365 in facebook and fix those security issues they fixed. I woukd love if I will keep getting future updates as well (better not via rogers as they are always late).
What should I do? First debrand or Bootloader+Root? There are many artices and XDA-posts. But I'm really confused because I want both.
Also, is it possible to unlock the phone?
Thanks a lot, please help me. At least, a brief answer with details are enough.

Read read, then read some more, bit of practicing what you've read then read some more when you screw up.
To Sim-Unlock you need the code which you have to pay
To de-brand you can use Flashtool and flash the file you like into your phone(get more information by reading @ development section)
There is no 4.3.3
Its 2.3.3 and its not available for North America, but some people have reported that you can flash World Generic.
There are links for all these and you should be able to find them by searching.

Thanks you both!
Yeah, I read that I need to pay to get a code. I wonder if I should Root the phone first or de-brand first.
I wonder if I will lost future updates from Sony Ericsson because of any of those methods?
Your phone is branded(got it from Rogers right?)
- bootloader can not be unlocked (for now)
- If you want 2.3.3 on your phone then you need to get World Generic (i have NOT tried this myself) and install it (get the version with 181 ending) root it and then do an OTA update.(I am not sure if this method works on lt15a)
If you are fine with North American version which is 2.3.2 then you get the file HERE and then use Gingerbreak to root.
Good Luck

You don't have to have your bootloader unlocked to flash your phone. You could use Flashtool to flash an unbranded (Generic) firmware to your phone. There is the .181 generic firmware on Development forum which you can use. That firmware is the latest Generic one for LT15a.
If you want to go further, there is a .184 firmware UK Generic (LT15i), it's a little more stable and faster than the .181, and you still could use Gingerbreak to get your phone rooted. The only downside (minimal), is that your phone will say that you have the LT15i Model, but it still will use american bands (850/1900/2100). it's Hardware related, not firmware.
The Generic .145 firmware is the latest, but by now, it can't be rooted if you have a locked bootloader, in fact, I'm waiting for a new gingerbreak or something to apply that firmware.
If you root your phone, you still have support from SEUS, don't worry.
Cheers.
Everyone's already answered so hopefully you're on your way.
Just a few extra points:
SIM/network unlocking is ONCE and PERMANENT. Flashing/rooting does not affect it.
Rooting is done after flashing and is optional.
Debranding the arc:
Check out the other videos. Almost everything should be covered.
Dear BlueChipJ, Nimche and chaqo71, Thanks VERY much for the complete guide on rooting and debranding this awesome phone. I really appricate it.
I will follow this and root on this sunday or Monday! *fingers crossed*
Have a good weekend!

[Q] Verizon Xperia Play Paid Bootloader Unlock

Hello everybody. I just picked up a Verizon Xperia Play today, and I am now aware that there is no free solution to unlock the bootloader at this time, but there is a paid solution.
After playing around with this phone for a few hours, I am desperate for root now. All of this bloatware and this auto-brightness "feature" is driving me absolutely insane. So I have reached the point where I am willing to pay for a bootloader unlock solution so I can root. I wish to know how I can go about going through with the paid solution?
I have tried sending a PM to Ashergray, and Blagus regarding this solution (as instructed to do in his topic), but for some reason I cannot send PMs..? Also, I couldn't reply to the thread in the dev topic to ask this question because I don't have ten posts yet. If a kind fellow nerd could tell me what I should do? There is nothing to click on Blagus' site that allows me to obtain this service.
I really don't want to regret buying this phone. The gaming experience on this is so fantastic, and an unlocked bootloader with rooting would make this guy happy.
Thank you for any replies.
<waits to be flamed for doing something wrong>
PMs are a pain in the butt, sometimes they show up when you send them, sometimes they don't
Over in the General section, Alejandrissimo has the paid solution to rooting/unlocking your play.

@TSBroich you don't have enough posts yet to send pm's, you'll need 8 I think.
Regards Dousan...
Got the paid service, and now my bootloader is unlocked. It was very easy.
Thank you guys for your suggestions and input.
No problemo, just be careful when an OTA comes out, the euoropean edition (800i) was bricked by having an unlocked bootloader...

Wow that sucks. I will definitely be extra careful, especially since I'm trying to install the European R800i stock ROM onto the Verizon R800x Xperia Play.
I've gotten it to boot up, I just cannot do anything except bring the notification bar down, and browse through the Xperia Play games cover flow..thing.
Still trying everything to get this to work.
Why would you have regretted buying it without the root ability? I'm still on the fence about this phone and trying to gather info
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Well if you like playing SNES, N64, GBA and PS1 games, it shouldn't even be a question about whether you should buy it or not IMO.
Although, if I could go back in time, I would have bought the unlocked R800i version instead of the one from the Verizon store (R800x).
Even without root, the R800x is still a great phone, and gaming is top notch. However, without root, you will have to live with quite a bit of bloatware and the screen is permanently set to auto-brightness.
But the one thing that really gets me is that the Verizon version is stripped of the whole Sony Experience (No Playstation store, etc).
I dould definitely recommend this phone to you, but root it and get the unlocked version.

Are you using a CDMA or GSM Verizon for your image? I know Verizon is CDMA and AT&T is GSM, so make sure you're using a CDMA version.
Also, try installing a home replacement app, see if that lets you do more...
Also, downloading the 800i apks (they are in the system dumps somewhere in the development section) can allow you to install the apps we're missing on the 800x.

The CDMA version is Verizon's version, so it doesn't have the features I'm looking for. That's why I'm flashing the EURO R800i image. Here is my process so far, and the outcomes:
It boots up just fine (new boot animation).
However, I am stuck at one spot. I cannot do anything except bring down the notification bar, view the Xperia Play games when I slide out the gamepad (VCast is gone!), and change USB options when plugged into the computer.
Here are the steps that I have taken:
-Full stock restore with FlashTool
-Flashed doomlords boot.img with the command "fastboot flash boot boot.img"
-Flashed frasertag's system.img with the command "fastboot flash system system.img"
-Flashed the system.sin from the R800i Firmware (I extracted it) with the command "fastboot flash system system.sin"
-Disconnected USB then turned the phone on. It boots just fine.
Hmm, you don't say. I wonder how I would go about installing APKs (including a new launcher) on the device even though I cannot navigate through any menus...or anything else.
ADB here I come..haha.
Hope this helps, it's a quick guide on using adb to install apps:
http://androidcommunity.com/forums/f4/how-to-install-apps-using-adb-4482/
Thank you for this reference. I was going to look for that myself, but you saved me the trouble.
A theory I have on why it didn't work is that the Nandroid backup was from factory stock, and NOT rooted.
So what I'm going to try next is:
-Do a Nandroid backup while in a rooted state, and all of the Verizon related software removed. Try restoring that.
-Download the system dump from the R800i, and install the R800i Launcher APK via ADB Shell.
With a launcher installed, hopefully we'll be able to, you know...do stuff.
Once the launcher is there, and it's confirmed that we can navigate the pages, we can go about installing the R800i apps if they aren't already there. But I shouldn't be getting ahead of myself now.
Haha, you good sir, are my hero, i read the other thread you opened, and i think i'll start following that one now
I'm curious if they were lazy and left the framework for the apps in there, but just removed the apps... well, we'll know since you're our brave guinea pig.
Got the Playstation Pocket Widget/App/Store onto the R800x successfully, along with the other Sony Ericsson widgets.
If I can confirm that the launcher will work, then I will do a Nandroid backup of this (so I can come back to it later, and to test in the restoration process), and go ahead and try all of this again. haha

Couldn't you re-unlock the bootloader and root again even on 2.3.3? I have seen it done by other people (not me though. I am sticking with 2.3.2 unlocked and rooted).
Also, if anybody wants to make their R800x Verizon Plays look, feel and act like the R800i, here is the link to my long post about using the R800i launcher, widgets and apps. I failed at getting the ROM to fully function, but these are almost as good as having it on there.

kexec-tools
Hey everybody first post so I hope I don't sound like a total noob. I don't know if this will work but after rooting my phone and exploring some of the files I found a kexec-tools file. I have read that some phones have been able to have a custom kernal flashed using kexec-tools. Just thought I would put it out there and see what others had to say.
can a verizon be unlocked and used on gsm carriers?

dead link
Hi. I've already rooted my phone. Now I want to try the ICS firmware from Sony and need to unlock my bootloader. The link provided. Above appears to be dead. I would be happy to pay for the unlock code or service. Thanks for any info.
Unlocking R800x
Okay I don't think I'm a complete noob at this as I've already rooted an HTC Hero, Droid1, and Nook Color. Could someone please explain how I'm supposed to unlock my R800x bootloader in simple terms? I'm getting conflicting directions everywhere I go and I'm more than willing to pay for it but no one I pm will reply for the unlock code.

[Q] Rooting the R800i without unlocking bootloader

Hello!
I'm interested in rooting my recently acquired Xperia PLAY (French version), because the bloatware is taking up too much space. However, I don't want to unlock the bootloader as I don't want to void my guarantee. Is this possible?
On a side note, I've heard that some people buy phones that have allready unlocked bootloaders; is there any way to find out if mine is too?
Thanks a lot,
Si1ver Shad0w
Buying phones with unlocked bootloaders is impossible unless it's used. You heard wrong
You can relock bootloader anytime anyways, but track id and qriocity will be gone forever
I used the XDA App to post this, what did you use?
Yeah, I knew that I could relock it, but still, I would prefer a rooting method that doesn't require this.
Also, to root it, I have to install some kind of new kernel or firmware, right?
OK, apparently a way to root without unlocking is to install the 2.3.2 FW and then do an OTA upgrade. But I can't find the ftf file. Can someone help me?
Also, for a French Xperia PLAY, I guess the UK ftf file is the best?
EDIT: Also, the XDA forums are very restrictive to newbies, no replying in the development section, have to wait 5 minutes between posts, etc...

[Q] Confused about Verizon R800x options

Can someone please clarify the available options for customizing the Verizon Xperia Play model R800x? With all the different versions of the Play, and all the threads here, and then changes upon changes, I've gotten a bit confused. Here is what I -think- is available at this time:
Root - this is most easily accomplished by using the ZergRush method described elsewhere. (Took me about 5 minutes or less to achieve root via this method.)
Firmware - R800x 2.3.3 Full 3.0.1.E.0.88 FTF is the most recent stock firmware from Verizon. It will completely restore your phone to stock, replacing any missing software. The easiest (only?) way to flash this to your phone is to use FlashTool.
Bravia - I remember reading something about this being an enhancement to the look of videos and photos when viewed in the Gallery. It can be installed in a manual fashion and is enabled after a reboot.
And that, as far as I can tell, is that. The Bootloader can not be unlocked by conventional methods and references to the paid (illegal ?) method have been pulled from the forums. Without the Bootloader being unlocked, custom ROMs, recovery, overclocking are all unavailable. I think that also includes Fastboot mode, although I never used it anyway.
So, have I missed anything? Is there anything else I missed, some really cool functionality I'm missing out on, whatever?
Thanks for the clarification. I'm trying to move beyond Noob status with this phone without bricking it in the process.
The Bootloader can be unlocked by contacting those members. That their threads have been wiped doesn't mean they're not doing the stuff. My thread has been recently updated to mention the issue.
I'm working on porting some of the cool mods from ths other versions. And don't be too scared of a brick I've bricked mine more times than I can count and I've been able to recover it every time.

[Q] Can I still root?

I've spent many hours reading and searching and am confused. I just picked up a Verizon R800x. I updated from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3 via verizon. Does that mean I can't use the zergRush exploit to root? Everything I've read seems to say that after NOV 2011, zergRush doesn't work anymore.
"MAJOR WARNING - ICS (4.x) doesn't work with it & any update to GB (2.3.x) after November 2011 won't either.
Quote:

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312859
Also, what about unlocking the bootloader? I've gone into the service menu and ....Service info > Configuration >Rooting Status does not exist. So that means I can't unlock?
I see theres some sort of "wire trick", but you need someones help and I've read that the guys that were doing it (for money) aren't doing it anymore, or can't get the code or something.
I thought Sony was was all for unlocking now?
So, to sum up, now that it's December 2012:
1. Can I root w/zergRush (or some other method)?
2. Does no "Rooting Status" in the service menu mean I should forget about unlocking?
Thanks for reading...

If you want to root, just use SuperOneClick on 2.3.3. Or if you want to install custom rom, just unlock its bootloader from Sony site then you can flash a custom kernel that has ClockwordMod included.
I wrote this instruction to root and install CWM to the Verizon Play before Sony allowed it to be unlocked: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961298
if youre already unlock, it is better because you can flash
via fastboot any kernel for play and have pre-rooted custom rom flashing
