[Q] Have Rooted, now a bit confused......! - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Oh god, heres hoping no-one gets cross with me for starting a new thread..........
I am obviously what you call a "noob" here!! I have researched lots and learned alot of stuff reading these forums and very grateful, but now a little confused as what I need to do. Here goes....
I have successfully rooted my phone HTC Desire with no problems with revoked 3. I rooted my phone due to internal memory issues! I have superuser in applications and have downloaded Titanium Backup from market and backed up apps and data using that application. I have not as yet backed up using HBOOT recovery yet....
My confusion is here. I have checked my phone which is PVT4, 20,000 (checked via Terminal Emulator) and it states S-ON. I have not partitioned my sd card. Am I right in thinking if I want to partition card I have to s-off my phone FIRST? Can I partition with S-ON? If I want to install Insertcoin do I have to do all these bits first or can I just go for it? The threads I have read about partitioning seem a little confusing to me and have also read about Alpharev etc.
I think I need someone to tell me step by step which way round to do things if thats possible??
Again, sorry if I am making people repeat things. I have tons of pages saved to favourites and I think I have overloaded my brain a bit and got myself too confused.
Thanks for any help I get!

Well, the post above was very helpful! Thanks so much for understanding!! If you read my post, the first thing I did was explain and apologise, and secondly, I HAVE searched the forum and read a huge amount. In the process, I have confused myself and got into a muddle with all the information available.
Why bother to reply to my question if you are irritated by it. Just ignore....especially as someone had kindly already answered.
THANKS VERY MUCH FOR THE FIRST POST I RECEIVED. I have not seen that tutorial before and will be using it this afternoon as it seems very clear to me, and thanks to the XDA Developers Forum in general for being here!

u dont need s-off to partitioning the sd card to create an ext partition
s-off make u change the partition table on ur phone by flashing a new hboot (stock hboot have for example system/cache/data with these dimension 250/40/147)..by flashing a new hboot u change that size..but is not required for some roms
for insert conin there are 2 versions i think..one for the stock hboot and one for the cm7 hboot (if u have s-off and u flashed the cm7 hboot of course)
the ext partition on the sdcard for insert coin is required..as the rom doesn't fit in the desire rom, so need the extension on ur sdcard
if u want s-off anyway u can try revolutionary.io (much easy and fast) if ur hboot is 0.93.x or 1.02.x..after s-off u can flash with fastboot the hboot u want from alpharev.nl..but u will need the rom that fit that hboot..read the requirement for the rom u want flash

I definitely was not irritated by it! I fully understand your post (that you are confused). But it should definitely not a problem for a user here on xda to start a whole new search. All questions you asked were answered. It's not a problem that they confused you (we all started without any knowledge) but next time you should write what exactly confuses you in the answers.
Nevertheless, I did not want to offense you in any way! If I did, I feel sorry.

Thank you for a response! I was slightly offended but no worries. I do see how frustrating it must be to constantly get people asking questions that have already been answered elsewhere....the problem being that there are so many threads answered by so many people with different solutions/links that it can be confusing to decide which path you take next....but thanks for your apology
Anyway, the link I was given at the beginning is brilliant and I have managed to S-OFF my phone so really pleased. I then went on to partition the card, downloaded GParted etc and booted up computer. Followed all instructions as per video but when it gets to the page to start doing it and the guy says be really careful you choose the right bit or you can mess up your computer.... well I only seem to have one choice. When I click the drop down menu it doesnt look like it has found the sd card in my phone. Now seriously worried about doing anything as I dont want to mess up my computer.
Any help massively appreciated..

Yeah, gparted can be a bit confusing when using the first time. On gparted website you find a very good documentation:
http://gparted.sourceforge.net/documentation.php
In the red market area you choose your device. Because its size is also listed, you cannot do something wrong:
After choosing your sd card, you have to partition it. Choose the unformatted area. and go to "Partition > New". A window appears:
In the area "Free Space Following (MiB)" you type "1024". As filesystem you choose fat32. In the field "create as" should stand "primary partition" by standard. Then press add. After this, choose the unformatted space and create parition like befoere. Now you only have to change the "file sytem" field to ext4.
To apply changes, you click on the green tick. If it completes successfully, you have partitionend sd card with a fat32 partition and a ext4 partition. Congratulations.

Oh,thanks so much for answer, I am now in the correct bit but.....I only have a 4 gb card!!!!!! Is that too small?? What sizes do I need to use if the card is OK?
Thank you sooooooooo much

That's absolutely no problem. You can also do these steps for a sd card with only 4 gb space. Removed the phrase "I assume ..." because it's not important.
Do not forget the thanks-button.

Ha, yes!! Erm, pleased its ok but just not sure what numbers to put in the boxes now.... has it changed cause I have a smaller card?? At the mo it says:-
Free space preceding = 1
Primary Partition
New Size = 3758
Free Space Following = 0
FAT32
and nothing in label
Thank Youuuuuuu

Change free space following to 1024. This is enough space for most a2sd roms (even sense). Then paritition this free space (primary partition/ ext4; rest standard).

Just doing it now.... THANK YOU!!!!

@annaluba
Don't feel sorry for asking for help. The threads on here can be so confusing, and when you use the search you usually find a load of stuff that has no bearing on what you want to know...
Just follow the guides and if you get stuck just ask. There's loads of good people on here to offer help if you need it. That's one of the reasons that XDA is here.
At least you did your research and tried to solve your problem first before posting the thread. The annoying people are the one's who don't search and try to work things out for themselves.
Follow the advice of MatDrOID and people like him and you can't go wrong.
Good luck.

Hey, i'd completely forgotten!!! Ha ha
You have been very helpful to me and totally forgiven
I think I have done it and now a very pleased lady......now to do nand back up and then a new ROM

If I can suggest a first time new ROM try GingerVillain 2.8 (AOSP)
I put this on as my first ROM and it's great. Easy to install and works like a dream. I've installed Go Launcher EX over it and it's fast and stable. I've had no problems with mine.
Alternatively if you want something completely different to HTC Sense try MIUI XJ. I put it on my friends Desire the other day and was very impressed.
Search the Android Development section and have a look at the ROM's on there. There's something for everyone.
Good luck.

With all due respect, recommending roms is a bit senseless, because it depends so much on personal preferences which rom is the perfect one. Anyway, I am pretty sure it's a good help for the op.

@MatDrOID
Yeah I know that in the end it comes down to personal choice, but I was just giving a starting point.
When I first rooted I went onto the Development section, took one look at all of the different ROM's and thought "how the hell am I supposed to choose a good one?" It's fine once you've flashed a few and know which sort you prefer, but as a noob rooter it can seem a bit daunting.
Just thought because of the ease of use to flash and requirements GV would be a good place to start.
It was only a suggestion. I wasn't telling her to definately flash THIS ROM. I'm sure annaluba will flash what she wants to flash.
@annaluba
Good luck, and enjoy your new rooted Desire.

Hey Guy's,
Thank you both for your suggestions and input. I am VERY pleased with myself that I have got this far thanks to the original video tutorial and help from you all. Have looked at ROMS and it is difficult to decide which to go for, but probably Insertcoin because it has Sense and Gingerbread...is that correct?? Am going to leave the ROM bit till tomorrow though - brain has frazzled now!!
Hopefully all will go well for me...
Thanks again to all

Well, if you believe that a sticky can help, go for it... Didn't mean to bother anyone... Just to be helpfull...
Good efforts, but do remember, we were all noobs once! I hope people start reading instead of typing!
Well, im n00b xD
When the wiki say that:
¤ Requires the installation of an original carrier ROM before installation in order to avoid system freeze and spontaneous Hard Resets
I think, how is that?, i must extract OS.nb from the RUU_Hermes_CINGULAR_WWE_3.62.502.3_6275_1.54.07.00_108_UOOS_SVN05_Ship.exe by example, and flash it? (thats it?)

Pretty much. You need to extract OS and ExtROM, and recompile them to nbh. Do not reflash radio all the time! Its dangerous!
Can someone explain the last point better?
I mean, is it really required? Why?
I'm simply having a working phone and never had to mess with the original rom...I've always flashed many Schap's roms without any SPONTANEOUS HARD reset ??? Why should they happen?
[p.s.] I just wanna learn...this story is sooo strange to me

I can't recall Schaps ROM being big storage and compressed? you only need to do these steps when you are flashing a big storage and/or compressed roms.

Hhm...I thought they have big storage even if I never checked/used...ok, actually I never used to know what it means!
I've just checked the wiki and found only a sentence saying it's a "merged" storage+extrom space...
Anyway, just to be sure, I'll flash a non-ANYTHING
Wish I didn't appear sooo noob, but these are the facts...

You can find it in settings/system/memory ... if it is big storage will have over 70 mb on the left side being ROM
Mmh, I'm almost sure I didn't have so much storage!
Anyway,
I've just noticed the ROM I wanted and actually flashed is the one in your signature
Seems great, cool and complete enough but...
I'm getting strange glitches in the main screen...it needs ages to reload the screen image there...
This happens also if I open the start menu and close it! Its image stays there for 3-5 seconds
I've tried many settings of sys cache, glitch cache, filter cache etc (mainly around the advised ones) but I had no luck of getting it faster
I think I'll look for other substitute of Schap's....even if it's surely a hard seek!
Sorry for the OT, and thanks for the help zocster!

hmm try flashing a shipped rom first, i don't experience this, this rom is damn fast as it is without tweaking.
the compressed rom has started from me or dvha on pdaviet, so i think for an old build just normal rom

No order

Hello, guys!
The forum is super but here is ocmplete disorder. Where are the ROMS?
How can one find a ROM file here?? The forum is huge and the search leads to discontinued results (2008 year)
Can someone point me to ROM file archive here?
BR
I'd demand a full refund of the money you've paid....
Seriously, if you scroll down through this list a few pages, some kind person has compiled a thread with all the links in one place. Search is terrible and you have to spend lots of your own time. Still, it's free.
Man its full of ROMs. Most active topics or most discussed ROMs are showed on first page. U dont need to search, just click on thread one the rom u like. Its noted by Cook, Built, WM version, sense version, and ROM Version.
Its easy as it can be.
But it's a mess here!
No normal instructions. All are outdated.
Well, as it was said - it's free and therefore it's messy.
ROMs here - one file, no Ruupdate.exe , no nothing. Like if any user comming here is a professional HTC developer. I am simple user and i am sick of spending hours of my time by gathring info by tips. Well, like i said -- good forum, but no order.
What are you complainin?
Please just have a look at recent posts as already said.
The threads where you have a lot of activity are the threads with new roms.
There are also plenty of tutorials!
For example this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=416211
For sure you will need some time to compare different roms and find your best fitting one....which comes with the big choise of roms.
And also there will be little problems from time to time which I'm sure you can solve in a short amount of time.
I can recommend the google search, not built in forum search.
Concerning flashing you don't need to use Ruupdate.exe, it's way easier to name your .nbh file DIAMIMG.nbh, move it to the phone's internal storage and flash directly (see tutorial)
Kind regards and have fun with your new roms

My complain is that forum is full of unimportant trash in topics and no really helpfull info. Like now, i have found a ROM, flashed it and i lost TouchFlo ) Super!
And no original ROMS, only some outdated.
Well, i am a bit tired reading this forum today within 8 hours to find more or less fresh tut, so i can not tell you exactly what is wrong, but i am telling you - i am professional software developer, not a lamer and not a pumpkin head BUT i lost in this forum, jumping from link to link.
I would delete ALL and put all in order:
Flash (ROM) files here:
Radio files here:
Boot loaders (Hard SPL or whatever it's called) here:
Flashers (Software) here:
Tutorials here:
Discussion here:
Instead i see 13248 topics with xxxxx messages inside and 1% of useful info.
Well, if you take donations then make it user friendly.
I will donate 100 USD to make it in order.
And PS - this is a problem that there are Plenty or tutorials!
Like we say in my language - brevity wit! Try to write the less and put sense the more.
Like when i read - hard SPL... then 100 lines text, cheers to authors and then - a patched bootloader..

Android FAQ - Starting point for Android newbies

Due to a lot of newbie questions arising in the Kaiser forum lately, I've decided to open this topic. Maybe we can all contribute to it and also make it sticky. Hopefully it will prevent pollution of Kaiser Android forum with common newbie questions that were answered like 100 times already.
Here are some common questions I've seen lately, with answers. Suggestions and corrections are welcome. I invite all experienced Android users to contribute to this topic with their Q/A posts or maybe suggestions and corrections for my Q/A post.
Q: I'm trying to install Android, but don't know where to start and how to do it?
A: You have to options, SD install (keeps Windows Mobile on the device in case you change your mind about Android) or NAND install (it wipes your Windows Mobile of the device). Follow the guide for SD install here or the guide for NAND install here.
Q: Everybody is talking about DZO's repository for kernel (NBH/zImage) files. Where can I find it?
A: Here!
Q: Found the kernels but I'm confused now. Which kernel / panel should I choose for my Kaiser?
A: You will have to find out which panel type is your Kaiser using: 1, 2 or 3. If you pick wrong you will have errors on your screen. The best way to test is to start with an SD install, use zImage kernel and edit andboot/default.txt with the "board-htckaiser.panel_type" set to 1, 2 or 3, until you get the righ one for your Kaiser. User zenity wrote also about this here.
Q: I'm trying to do an SD install to ext2 partitions but don't know how to format SD card?
A: You will need an Ubuntu Live CD. Get it here. Then boot it and just follow this great video guide by user loserskater.
Q: I installed Android 2.1 (eclair), but camera and BT audio is not working. What am I doing wrong?
A: Camera and BT audio are currently not supported under Android 2.1 (eclair) on Kaiser devices. You could however use one of the older Android builds (Donut), like Myn's Warm Donut. Camera and BT audio are supported on most of the Donut builds, but keep in mind that quality is still not comparable to quality on Windows Mobile.
Q: How can I mount SD card through USB?
A: Here is the same problem with a solution.
Q: Which is the best Android build for Kaiser?
A: Hard question to answer. Actually there aren't many Kaiser dedicated builds. Luckily Vogue builds works on Kaiser, if you apply Wifi and BT updates (if they are available). You should probably try and decide by yourself. Keep in mind that older Donut 1.6 builds have camera and BT audio supported, while newer Eclair 2.1 builds have more functions and also better UI. Two very popular builds are Myn's Warm Donut and Incubus26Jc's Super Eclair 2.1.
Q: I installed Android but now everything is blurry.
A: It's due to wrong resolution. Kaiser phones have panel for 230x320 but you're probably using 320x480 build. Here is a post by user tatnai where he explains this situation for Vogue devices (it goes same for Kaiser).
Q: I have Android up and running. Now I need navigation software. Which one to use?
A: Well, iGo & iGo Amigo works on Android, so does Ndrive and Sygic. But you may bump into the resolution problem if you are using 230x320 and want to use iGo. Read this topic.
Q: My battery status is wrong. How can I fix this.
A: You need to "calibrate" the battery with your Android. Here is a guide made by user Millence.

I'd also invite all Android newbies to go through Android Vogue FAQ topic as mostly it's all valid for Kaiser devices as well.
BT Audio work in the old polymod build. Use delta or gamma+BTUpdate.
Sd Install guide.
I just checked out the SDcard link its outdated, doesn't reference androidinstall.tar. Having l33t xperts direct n00bs to easy sounding guides which result in failure is a huge pet peeve, so please stop if your not even going to test your own advice. Newb's, like myself?, are having issues because we are trying to use haret or otherwise we are trying things reported to work, yet seem to have never been tried in recent times. FYI: Haret method is broke. If you don't believe me disprove me, please disprove me. Start from scratch, reference http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=680963. For now it seems that sdcard/nand not using haret is the only way to get a working droid w/ sound and everything. That guide is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=680963, but I haven't gone that route as I like my winmo. The furthest I got with haret was booting droid w/o sound and no one has been able to offer any advice that i haven't already tried. I tried a bunch of different kernels, a few different radios. Please prove me wrong I think requiring users to nuke their winmo when android is still beta and lacking drivers is insane. (i.e. my winmo takes about 6hours to install and tweak everything and I use it regulary, why should i have to wipe it just so I can preview the development progress?)

I almost forgot that BT audio works on polymod. Couldn't we just take the fix and apply it to other Eclair builds like Incubus26Jc's Super Eclair or mssmison's CM 5.0.7 test 3?

I'm Haret booting every day. It works. With sound. On some builds also with camera and BT. But you're right - the links are outdated, it's for the old SQSH method - sorry. Can't find any newer in-depth SD install guide (if somebody knows one please post a link) but here is a quick quide by user tatnai that works.
However I believe Android on Kaiser is still not ready for prime-time use. If you need a stable OS where everything works as it should, you should stick to WinMo at least for a while. You want to contrubute do developement? Welcome. If you have a problem / question? That's what forum is for and we will help you if we can.
I made this FAQ in a good faith to help users start - I had problems starting Android on HTC also when I first decided to do it. But I tried & tried, read the forum throughly and eventually I succeeded.
Android on Kaiser is still in developement and things change on a daily basis. Thta's why forum is for, so we can discuss that and help each other.
Versioning?
Maybe its cause I've used the newest sources or because my hardware is different, would be nice to know either way what it is that causes me not to have sound. I basically did follow that guys guide, but I'm still sol. Can you download the newest ones and give it a go? If it works then I'll follow your instructions, if not can you backtrack which sources you used so perhaps we can do a diff on it to see what needs to be done? Please check out the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=680963 and post a solution if you can come up with one that produces an android w/ sound via haret, about 3-7 of us who have posted there would appreciate it, and god knows how many others who are keeping their mouth shut as well.

Let's try it like this.. Here is the link to copy of my andboot folder, with incubus26jc's & Vilords Tattoo Sense Android androidinstall.tar build for Vogue and Kaiser. This one is native 240x320 with working Wifi and Camera on Kaiser. Latest dzo's zImage is included. This one works for me superbly. Build still lacks support for BT but I think it will be solved soon.
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/72524/andboot.7z
Download it and install it. Before installation change (in default.txt) panel setting "board-htckaiser.panel_type=3" to your panel type and also set "board-kaiser-battery.battery_capacity" parameter to 2000 if you're using 1350mAh stock Kaiser battery. Please report if your sound works with this configuration. Hope it helps.

If you have flashed winmo ever before, you shouldnt have a problem. just boot into the bootloader and flash as usual.
i install system in NAND and data in ext2
but when i check in my sd (windows only can detect fat32 format),
data.img in my sd. it is normal?
You suppose to put data on sd card partition. Its kinda confusing.

Hey milanche, thanks a million for making this FAQ. It has been very helpful for me. I am LOVING android on my Kaiser! I got a sweet sweet taste of it when using my friend's X10 and was HOOKED. Now, I'm HOOKED UP!!!
deezy7?
Deezy, are you using haret? Did you get sound off the bat?
The 'local ept for program xxxxx' error is normal, as are the first ones about tty and job control, I see these 'errors' every time I boot, and it seems to have no effect, the rpc ones i get sometimes, usually followed by a load of FC's once android starts, the init sys_prop ones I have seen before also, with the same results.
Basically once this happens I have to pull the battery and reboot, which usually fixes things, in my case that is.
However I'm beginning to wonder if there is something more serious going on with your device, having followed your trials it seems that no matter what you try you are dogged by bad luck, I'm sure it's not you, or that you are making mistakes, simply that, for whatever reason, android hates your Kaiser.
Sorry I can't be of more help, this one simply baffles me.
@tyler51773
Did you try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=6570064&postcount=7
And what were the results?
what option i have to take if want install system in NAND and data in ext2??
because when i choose system on NAND and data on ext2, my data.img will go to my SD

I really don't think you needed to start a whole new thread for troubleshooting when one already exists for neopeek.

You don't think you can find the fix by asking in the thread in which you got the build you are using? Neopeek's build is the only build that requires multiple partitions, so his thread, since he is the developer for that system, should be the one you are asking.
Use GParted to create the partitions. It should be as simple as clicking the GUI. I never had any mount problems when testing this neopeek build, or the XDAndroid multiple partition setup, nor did any of the other testers that I talked with. I dont know if you are trying to manually mount that drive, but for me it always did it automatically when i put the SD card into my card reader. Perhaps I would start from step 1, and take them very slowly 1 at a time. Its usually something very small you overlooked.

Hi ?
where is the option to enable fingerprint locking as could be done in moto G5? ?
Hello!
Anybody knows why the content on the status bar isn't on the status bar? I enabled developer options and chose the "Hide" option on the device cutout tab

When you choose to hide the cutout, it blacks out the top portion of the screen in an attempt to hide the camera cutout. It's not trying to take the shape of the cutout. It's just trying to hide it by blacking out the rest of the space.
Thing is...if you choose to hide the cutout, I think that's what it's supposed to do. I could be wrong though. But I think it's normal for this case that the status bar is also moved below that "virtual cutout". Basically it's treating the entire top portion of the screen as a giant "notch". In my opinion, that's a waste of space, so I'd suggest to better leave it default.
However, if you wanna have the status bar on a black background, so that the camera is not that obvious, and basically hide it a little better, while also having the status bar up top, simply choose a different wallpaper, one where the top part is black, or edit one, so that the top part of it is black. But...I think that might look kinda weird. So if that's what you're looking for, go for it. If not, just use a regular dark/black wallpaper.
Personally, that camera cutout doesn't bother me that much. And I prefer it over a regular notch in the middle of the screen. But that could be just my personal preference.
I have enabled hidden screen recorder in adb settings where I can get the settings and how to save recordings

So this won't work for my Moto one action (2013-4?)
"SIM 2 Not Allowed"
When placing two chips in the device, sim 2 does not work and a message "SIM 2 not allowed" appears.
How to solve this and use the two chips normally?
Hey brother if this helps I relocked mine but got the same screen but I did see a message via CMD Windows 10 during fastboot when relocking the bootloader saying that I had to go under developer options and enable OEM bootloader unlock then re send the command via fastboot in CMD so I did so and that pesky warning screen on my motto one action about unlocked bootloader went away that's also after using the rescue software to rid of TWRP, Magic and root and put the original stock firmware north american latest back on my phone.

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I unfortunately do not understand much about build.prop but I'm wanting to understand. I've factory reset my phone without fixing my issue so I took a look at my recovery logs which look like this tmp/recovery.log, I am hoping someone has a stock build.prop for the xt2013-4 and what is the best way to tell if there is something wrong with the phone?

Sorry for posting even more questions, but I'd like to know:
I'm currently on LineageOS 18.1 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-unofficial-troika-11-lineageos-18-1.4276001/) and wanted to try out the LineageOS 17.1 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-unofficial-troika-10-lineageos-17-1.4158525/)
TWRP seems to flash the ROM just fine, with no errors, but when I try to flash Gapps, it gives me error 20 (incompatible android version). Anyone have any ideia why that might be happening?
For reference I'm using TWRP 3.3.1, and I'm doing a clean flash.
Also, if I wanted to get my device back to stock. Like, factory stock, as if just purchased. What would be the best of doing it?
Someone posted a link with the stock roms but they're not flashable with TWRP. (https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/troika/official/RETBR/)
Lastly, while I am satisfied and grateful for the custom ROMs currently available, I must admit there aren't many options to choose from at the moment. Why is that? Is it not popular? Or not a worthwhile device? Or are developers simply not interested?
Thanks in advance for any answer

Motorola devices have largely lost the interest of Devs.
As android has matured and most unique features that custom roms had, are now part of stock android.
Most people that care about the android version, buy a new device every year or two.
So fewer people are using custom roms.
and Roms are built by the owners of the devices.

I see... I thought it was something exclusive to this device but in that case it's more of a general "problem".
Like I said, I'm happy with what we have of course! I was just curious because I think the Moto One Action has some potential, so when I came here for the first time I thought it would have a more active scene.
Thanks for the quick response btw!

Also Motorola is a small part of the Android market.
With so many Android OEMs, and fewer active Devs, you just don't see many options for many devices anymore.
