Can someone please explain to me radio updates? Are they the same thing as modems updates?
I recently changed my stock epic 4g to Syndicate Frozen and I have noticed that where I used to get a wonderful wifi signal, it can hardly pick up a signal. Not at my home, but in other places.
So I recognize this needs some tweaking, but I could use some knowledgeable well explained info before I just start updating. I've made mistakes before that has brought the odin out in me when I act without haste so I'd rather not go through that for the forth time
Any info and or links would be greatly appreciated.

Yes
That's where I found the ROM.
Maybe a special radio or modem is needed to properly supplement the ROM.
Sorry if I offended you.
I don't know much lol but I believe they are the same (radios & modems). Its a very simple flash with odin just put modem.tar in phone slot not pda, takes maybe 30 second for a modem. But as it goes backup first always. Also, hate to tell you but you posted this in the wrong area. This thread should be in q&a section.

I appreciate your response, but I'm looking for more info on specifics. What radio is best for wifi or what radio is best for 4g or what radio is best a custom ROM.
I suppose I'll post elsewhere. I hope I can find the right place to post these sorts of questions.

I believe the radio/modem/baseband firmware has no bearing on either WiFi or 4G.
i know the modem doesn't impact wifi (use the same modem for EH06 vs an EC05 rom and you'll see a difference in wifi signal strength) but i don't play with 4g enough to see if the modem affects anything. 4g is still too spotty in my area to use regularly..

So this is my problem. I never use 4G either but the wifi is a problem, especially when I'm using public networks.
Thanks for the info.
I am using SyndicateFrozen Rom 1.2 and I installed the EH06 modem and noticed a big difference over the EC05 modem.
Do you know where I can find this modem?
There is a bunch of them here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1123103
Android development its stickied all the modems...and I think I heard that the modem has control over wifi/4g/bluetooth. I personlly dont think wifi tho

Nope, none of the modems produce better 4G for me. Getting 8Mbps on EC05. I'm sticking with it until official GB.

I know for sure my wifi reception is worse on this new ROM (Frozen Syndicate). I'm going to flash the radio for ECO5 and see if that helps.
So the Frozen Syndicate ROM started throwing an error that interfering with my incoming and outgoing calls and voice mails. I've switched to StarskyROM Alpha v2 EH17 and so far I'm very pleased.
But I'm seeing that my wi-fi is not at full strength, even though I'm right next to the router. I know they say to try different modems and find the right one.
But I'm looking for a method. What should I try first? EH17 because that's in the name of the ROM? Or EC05 because that's in the Baseband version? Or should I go through the list and try them all? If so, how do I test them to see which one is most effective?
Thanks.

Mine does this too. At work I'll have full or 5 bars w/ 3g and it will drop when I'm surfing the net or doing something on the phone. That happened today actually, and I'm on the EF10 modem. I was thinking of swapping to EF02 to try, but I wanted to try ef10 for a few days.
it happens everywhere
im using the ef10 modem.
I get that, mostly at home, with the EC05 modem.
is there anything you do that helps? do i need to change anything in the data menu? ##3282#
Yeah, I've just recently started having that kind of weird behavior too. I just watched my bars rocket from full strength to one. My 4g had been weird too, works, then just goes to sleep in the middle of downloading or something....I'm running srf 1.2 on ec05 modem...just flashed genocide 1.1 kernel which is awesome on battery life already, btw!
Anyway, all I can think of is to try some different modems...

@mookdawg7 im running the same rom, kernel, except the modem, im running ef10 but plz if you try out any modems or if anything you adjust in the settings please let me kno cuhz this problem is really getting annoying:/
I have an evo equipment number 0004 rooted with one click root. on stock rom shows in status bar 3g but when I flash any custom rom will show 1x. but from what I see I am still getting 3g speeds on data. put my evo up with my wifes evo and they both load in the same amount of time. not sure what happened with this wondering how to fix this problem. any suggestions will be very appreciated.
Thank You.
Which rom are you using? Radios? PRL? Posting that will help get you an answer. You did say the stock rom was OK?
I am using evo deck version 1.2 gingerbread 2.3.4 currently. I flashed the newest radio prl version is 01115 I didnt take the ota update flashed the new stock rom from the user that posted it on here flashed all the new radios.
OK, looks like you are not the only one that has had that issue with deck's rom. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14374227
whats weird is that even on sense roms I get the same issue besides evo deck like mikG or other sense roms. even before the updated radios I had the same issue. maybe its not anything to worry about just seems odd
Download speedtest and run some tests. That will clue you in to if it's a real issue or not. It could be just a reporting bug in the roms or it could be a borked 3g radio.
If you reflash to a stock rom now, does the 3g notification work right? I know you said that it did work on the stock rom, but was it recent?
ok I will try that I dont get signal at home but before I leave the house I will flash stock rom back I used stock rom last week and it said 3g in the status bar. what speeds should I be looking for on a speed test? should I use the speed test app in the market?
Speed test is in the market.
Download speeds should be in the 1300kbps to 1500kbps
Just to get you some real world numbers, my 3g speeds in Santa Clara were 900kbps to 1331kbps on 3g and 2600kbps to 3400kbps on 4g
I am somewhat new to the epic scene, and had a few general questions that i have searched for over the forums here but get such a broad variety of answer im unsure of what is true and what is not.
Basically, my phone is set up with the following :
Firmware Version : 2.3.5
Baseband : S700.0.5S.EG22
Kernel : 2.6.35.7-g67f7514
Build : CleanGB.b13.EI22
I haven't updated to the latest CleanGB (which i plan on doing when i get home today)
But the problem is as follows:
My data connections suck..... I have replaced the phone 3 times (in less than a month) I have updated the PLS, changed the wimax settings with the MSL code, and had sprint flash it as well. But my connection speeds are so messed up.... I get 4-12 mb's Down, but only like .2-.8 up.... Can anyone recommend a GB build (if the updated one of CGB is better that's fine too) and kernel/modem to use in combo with each other that may help with this problem? It doesnt seem to matter what build i use, they all seem to have this issue.
Thanks alot!
Try updating your modem. You need to Odin the EC05 modem then flash the EC05toEI22.zip. If you think it is software related as opposed to Sprint network problems (i'd bet on that) then Odin in stock EC05 and test it there.

Thank you. I will try that when i get home as well.
Is the wimax and wireless running on the same thing? The reason i ask is becuase when i connect to a wireless network it will do 10+mb down and usually 5+ up.....

They all go through the modem. But 4G is dependent on Clearwire's network nearest you and wifi is dependent on your router switching speed and network speed.

Gotcha thanks!
So after having to flash my phone about 15 times.... i thought i had broken something, i flashed a stock rom, them CWM..... then black screen and wouldnt power up. So after messing with the phone itsself for abit i finally got it to cycle again. But now im Running ASC/Samurai with the ec05 to ei22 modem. Runs so much better, and my wimax upload has almost doubled.
Thanks again for the help.
I like this phone a lot but the 4G connection is so unstable that it makes the whole experience very frustrating.
I used to have an HTC EVO 4g, and despite all, it would connect to 4G inside my office and most importantly it would stay connected the whole time.
The same thing with my Motorola Photon, The phone didn't have full bars while on 4g but it would stay connected to it as long as I wanted.
My SG2 however, disconnects very ramdomly.
Say it's connected to 4G and as soon as I wake up the phone, it turns off.
Say it's already on and connected to 4G, as I open an app, it disconnects.
One of the worse parts, is when it disconnects and doesn't even give a 3G connection but a 1X
Ohh it's very frustrating. I love this phone and its features but if the software is so unstable I would consider replacing it.
btw, I'm in NYC, My phone is rooted with the StrongSteve Odexed Blue EL29 custom ROM, and I got the latest modem (FB27).
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

I'd recommend updating your PRL and profile under system updates. I flash a lot of ROMs and right after I always seem to have connection issues. Then I remember to do the updates and everything works great.
Good luck!

Have you tried any other modems?
There are a few newer ones out there now (since FB27).
The one I've had the most luck with is FC07. Here's a link to it off you'd like.

I had flashed to an AOKP rom a while back and had since had a very significant and noticeable drop in signal strength. So much so that I was unable to get a signal at all in places when I would normally have 2-3 bars. Other people still get signal in those places with the same service provider. I decided to try to flash different modems to try and fix the problem. I have since tried 3 different JB modems from rogerwilco's modem repository for the E4GT. Every single one I have not been able to get a data connection at all. At most I have been able to get 1-2 bars and no data connection. Even if my signal strength was low I could care less as long as I could get a data connection at all... can someone please assist me? Has anyone else been running across any other type of issue? I also wanted to know... when I update profile and PRL... is this stored in /data or does it burn it to the same area of memory as the modem image? Primarily... does it get wiped when you wipe data?

Interesting... I have to say... it is rather difficult considering I can't find much as far as compatibility information for modem images... not with between versions anyways. Meaning... what is compatible and works with what. All I can seem to find out is what stock image they came out of.
JB modems only work with JB touchwiz based roms. All other modems work fine with all other roms. The FI27 modem worked just fine for me on various aosp roms.
The FL24 modem works great for me on AOSP. The leaked JB modems do not work on AOSP. I didn't have great luck with them on stock rooted roms either though (FK23 and FL04).
I would try a stock rooted build like FK23 and run it for a while and see if you get your signal strength back.
Them you can figure out whether it's your radio or Rom.
