[Q] Help!! My Desire is stuck on HTC logo - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Guys hello again. The sh*t has just hit the fan…
I have been on miui-au for months and was currently running version 1.8.22.
This morning i noticed that when people would send me text messages i would go into a reboot…
This happened 2 or 3 times and then i decided to remove the battery and do a cold reboot.
When i turned the phone on it just stays stuck on the htc logo.
If i keep the volume key pressed it goes into the screen with fastboot etc, but i cannot enter recovery or boot into my phone…
Can anyone suggest anything that i can use to recover my phone?
I am on hboot 0.93 001
Thanks a lot

Thanks, that's both constructive and creative.
I have been a member of this forum for 3 years longer than you, therefore not a newbie and i have obviously searched, but sadly did not find something that seemed like a solution to my problem.
Also, its not very easy to keep a cool head when your phone just collapse.
Thanks once again for all your help, and i am sorry that your knowledge and non-newbieness could not be more productive for my situation.
If you cant help, just be quiet.
Are you a mod?

I'd try:
Code:
fastboot flash recovery [path-to-recovery.img]
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
then try to boot into recovery
I suggest to flash Amon_RA 2.0.1, it can't restore CWM backups but "just works" without any major bugs

So what? I should pray you as my lord? I've done much more in 10 months than you in 3 years. That being said, GTFO!

So you're member for almost 4 years there, and u still dont know that questions should not be posted in Development section?
Intriguing.
On topic:
Like alexadrou said,
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img (should be in same folder as fastboot.exe)
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader

Go into recovery, wipe everything and reflash.
If you're S-OFF i would advice to flash 4ext recovery, from my sig.

Post in Q&A section, you may get better answers.

I posted here because it was a custom rom that created the problem.
Have a nice day, and thanks very much.

Boot to bootloader, choose Fastboot and connect USB.
Open command prompt (in windows Menu Start->Run->CMD, in linux- any terminal), browse to AndroidSDK/tools folder and execute these commands. Simplest way is to copy recovery.img to /tools, you won't need to type in path to .img but just a file name

What's the point in saying how long you've been a member of XDA???
I've been a member for less than a month, and even I know that the "Development" thread is for developers, and the "Q&A" thread is for any and all questions.
It's easy, the clue's in the name...
"MOD EDIT: BEFORE POSTING ANY THREAD IN THE DEVELOPMENT SECTION, PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING:
If you have developed a ROM, or are working with others to do so, the development forum is somewhere to discuss and share ideas, post useful feedback and logs or crash dumps, and to discuss a common goal developers are trying to achieve.
It is NOT the place to post your question because it gets higher traffic, or because more experienced users frequent it. Doing this just annoys those who are working on the device, and drives them away. Developers don't want to wade through 20 threads of "Help me urgently" to find their threads for porting and fixing camera issues etc. Similarly, if a thread is designated as discussion for developers say, porting a camera fix, please do not post in there asking "When will it be ready?", "Can I flash this yet?" etc. This is both completely disrespectful to those working on the project (you evidently haven't read the important posts in the thread), and also is making it harder for developers to find comments from other developers or testers when required."
Solved.

now im coming from many other android related phones but what i remember most that may help....ima test this but i remember ClockworkMod Recovery being used for MT3GS.......we go into our stock recovery; click update.zip (which was the clockwork recovery) and it would boot up a recovery mode that way; has anyone attempted this?
....Just a thought towards root or atleast custom recovery

The way I understand is the locked or bug in NAND will not allow for a recover. It removes all SU permissions on reboot.

Have you contributed anything to the G2 root effort? Some of the best Android hackers are working to root this phone; in fact many of the same ones who came up with the method you posted in your first post.
im actually attempting but with any type of movement requires a brainstorming; so i was literally brainstorming outloud......i cant help if my ideas have been thought of you kno
There's a thinktank thread, it was posted there, it won't work.

Not trying to be rude, but present some facts. Try it out. Show us the code. Explain your findings. And present your idea in a clean, intelligent, organized manner. That means capital letters. That means punctuation. That means use the space bar.
I agree with, I'd say, ~90% of the other users here. All the useless crap in this forum is doing absolutely nothing towards getting actual development accomplished.
Mods: Please lock and/or delete this thread. Also, I apologize for wasting an entry in the SQL database. =P

Haha good luck. People keep posting about what should be done yet have no idea what actually goes on to do any of this stuff. It isn't as simple as "making" it, you have to know HOW to make it. Please go to the think tank thread.
thinktank thread is good but the WIKI is even better. I just wish it was updated more often -- but anyway this thing has everything short of #g2root irc
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Intro
READ THIS REALLY F*CKING CAREFULLY --- it is great reading. If you have ideas after reading it (i said read it dont glance it dont masturbate on it just read it as if it was your last will and testament) and then speak up.
Look not to rain on ur parade buddy but in order to do that on the mts you first had to install the enginering img to the phone that allows unsigned packages. Now since we have a copy of the eng img for the g2 (we as in the devs not me) and the phone will not let you downgrade to it so therefore the mts way of loading a custom recovery won't work. I traded in my mts to get my g2.

As for OP, post this in the thinktank thread. Why did you bother making your own thread? You only had an idea, which is what the other thread is for. If you had tried it out and had success, then it may be a different story.

[Q] there is noobs here we r not all devs !!! so take it easy on us

oh people come on i really appreciate all the work your doing here but your talking about flashing custom roms and unlooking boot loader !!! and stuff like that but the thing is i don't even know how to install a cutom roms and i'm sure there r many guys like me out there so please be easy on us so here what i want to know and i'm sure if you answered this topic it's gonna be a useful one
1-do we need to backup out things from phone memory and sd card before unlocking our phones using the new htc dev thing ? and if yes so how to make a full back up ?
2- we will do the unlock boot loader thing and there is a good tutorials out there
3- after unlocking the boot loader i think we have to do a complete wipe or some thing like that and then flash a cutom rom right ? so please tell us how to do that wipe thing and install a rom and which rom is the most stable one out there
4- can i go back to the old rom which is htc 2.3.5 if i didn't like that boot thing
5- with custom roms is it posible to install apps from the market ? and what are the deferences in general between the 2.3.5 official and any rom i will install after rooting ?
thank you for reading this post all, i'm asking for is an easy 1 2 3 .... complete guide for noobs
Well, problem is not you guys are new. Neither your lack of knowledge about the topics.
Mostly the problem is that people do not read and open new threads for topics already existing. I wrote 2 tutorials and I think I wrote them a way new users can understand.
Using a searching machine or forums search is no advanced topic. When I was new to it all, I spend like 2-3 days of reading and finding out myself.
So, look at our point of view: we write tutorials that are detailed and answer questions all about in the respective threads. We can't write a whole tutorial again for everyone not willing to read.
And to almost all questions, there already is an answer. And I think if you want to do stuff with your phone you should search and read. then you still can ask questions. But often people come here this way: Hi, I'm new, now tell me exactly what I have to do.
theq86 first of all i appreciate your time
but you can't judge me !!!! i spent 2 days reading and searching all i could find was people talking about new roms and stuff like that and expressions that i don't understand
and i tried to the search tool btw if u type noob you will find tons of suggestions with no match topics
so i'm not taking the easy way or any thing
and rather than complaining from my post you can point me to those threads your talking about for new comers it would have been nice of u
I don't blame you in particular, I just give examples. So sorry if you understood it that way.
Well, here we go:

Yes, I'd recommend that. You can backup all your PIM data (calendar, cntacts, messages) with MyPhoneExplorer. If you have synced everything with google you can restore it afterwards with a full sync. But I'd recommend MyPhoneExplorer, because you have your data on pc then.
During the process of unlocking the phone and all of it's data will be reset!

When you flash a custom rom, be sure to wipe the cache partition, the dalvik-cache and the data partition. otherwise bootloops or malfunctions could appear. Wiping all these is very easy once you have a custom recovery tool.
4- can i go back to the old rom which is htc 2.3.5 if i didn't like that boot thing

You can go back to stock rom. But this will not recover your warranty. You can even lock the bootloader again if you really wish. How to do so is stated in my bootloader unlock tutorial, too.
5- with custom roms is it posible to install apps from the market ? and what are the deferences in general between the 2.3.5 official and any rom i will install after rooting ?

Yes, in case you use the cyanogenmod rom you will have to insall the google apps manually, but market is available on every rom.
The differences between stock rom are manifold:
themes and designs can differ
custom roms often include fixes and tweaks to improve device speed, stability and battery life.
Most roms are debloated. So never used apps are removed.

thank you very much for your time i really appriciate it , but i still have some more questions
1- after unlocking my bootloader do i have to install a custom rom or can i keep using my current 2.3.5 i understand that it will be like starting from scratch
2- what is the clock recovery mod and where to find it and how to use it " in this question i'm using the easy way beacuse i know i'll find info about this thing if i searched the fourm but who want's to take the hard way thank's to you "
3- i've read some thing about adding an sd card partition to the phone memory or some thing like that please give me a full description about this thing and can i add this partition to my current stock rom after unlocking the bootloader with out installing a custom rom if it's possible ?
oh sorry i forgot 1 more question
people are saying that cyeanogen rom is the best but i keep reading that it's not an official realese and the radio and wirless and camera etc ... is not worknig but there is the 7.2 version i saw recntly on the dev section which is said to work perfectly so is it stable ? it it fast ? do you recomend me to use it ? i'm asking this question beacuse i noticed you r a cyanogen mod fan
and to install any rom of course i'll have to do these steps
1- flash the clock recovery mod which you will point me to how to use it
2- flash the custom rom and that's every thing
and to flash these things i but them on the root folder on my sd and disable the fasy boot option then turn of the phone and power t up holding the volume down button and it will do the magic am i right ?
Search on marketplace for clockwork mod - use it to boot to recovery mode - then, if you have a flashable zip rom stored in the root folder of your phone you can just flash the rom from there - best to backup and wipe first

Hi sramie, this should be in general section but basically, and I'm not going to get too detailed here, hboot is your original bootloader. Same as when you first rooted a Samsung through Odin. You had to boot the device into its bootloader before you could do anything.
Fastboot is effectively you're first OEM version of Odin and or recovery but on the phone itself. You can boot into it and then flash everything else via commands from a pc. Some of these commands are Adb some are fastboot. So these commands are behind the GUI of Odin. When you try and flash a Rom on a Samsung these are the commands given just through a graphic interface without you having to type them into a command prompt.
Ruu is just the original software installed on a device in its entirety. It can be region or provider specific. That's why we don't all get updates ota at same time.
I'm not going to go into step by step here because searching and learning is the best way to understand what you are doing. And there are heaps of tutorials already on these forums. Try search terms recovery, adb and tutorial. Should give you what you need.

I would apreciate some help here as i got really confused.
I just unlocked my bootloader from HTCDev just to discover that I cannot install custom recovery, I cannot have root access and there are no recent custom ROMs to install (I need a stable one but recent, not older than mine - 2.3.5)
Could you help me by answering, what's the point of unlocking bootloader if I can't have the above?
I need to use sdcard for apps but for this, Root is required which is not able.
I need custom ROM (if there is one which is fine tuned with better performance, battery, and lighter)
I need to use apps that need root access, i.e titanium backup, etc. how can I use them without root?
So is this forum really dead? I remember it was more alive a few months ago.
I'm abandoning my efforts since I have to recover the phone back to normal use but it's a pitty that things are like that here.
First things first........as a senior member you should know well to post questions in the General section ONLY
Second..... if you have unlocked the bootloader correctly(i know you might have done that), root via Doomlord's easy root kit....
As far as the recovery is concerned...use Rom manager..... it's the easiest way
And the "aliveness" of the forum is quite well as compared to other fora...... the other mid-range phones may have more roms but a majority of them are PURE KITCHEN WORK while others have a little framework changes in CM7..... so there's no extra choice as compared to our phones.....
If you want good roms, mindhaxer/einstein.frat's(they both are the same) roms are good sense ones
Or you can try CM7 or CM9 if you are an AOSP fan
I hope this long post is the answer to all your points in your 2 posts
First of all, thanks for answering.
Second, even if I posted in Q&A, I don't believe I would get any different answers and,
third and most important, I have done my reasearch thoroughly but couldn't find this part you mentioned anywhere so I was trying to gain root with many other methods like super tool, etc. Now, if those guides are not stickies how could I possibly know where to find those steps? they were not even in the first 4-5 pages of the WFS forum.
Yes as a senior member I decided it would be wiser to post here in order to have better chances but maybe I'm wrong.
Anyway, I have to thank you again because you guided me to find the DooMLoRD package which wasn't mentioned anywhere else and now in a few minutes I managed to root the phone which I abandoned a few hours ago.
I still insist though that this info must be gathered here as sticky otherwise new comers will always be confused and need years to manage something which in other forums is managed in minutes.

I agree with you I've been trying to figure out the rooting of this phone for the past two hours, I never bother posting for help as you always get scolded and people say duh use search which is really helpful.
I did I didn't find the answers. this forum is a bit of a mess tbh compared to the onex forum..

If you need any help from here just let me know. I have already root on my phone and it's quite easy once you have all the steps in hand.

I went from complete noob to unlocking, installing cwm and then a custom rom by doing a lot of reading in xda and other forums. The info is all there!
You expect to spend 2hrs reading and know how to root, you need to spend more time learning, and the more time time you spend the less chance of messing it up.
I spent a lot more than 2hrs and all went fine and I've never had a problem.

Its not about getting an answer to your question. Its about keeping this section clutter free. Its the development section for a reason, and I'm mighty sure I'm not seeing a custom ROM in this thread.
So follow the rules and post in General or Q&A next time.

Ok I see. Now I have 2 options: reply or shut up and leave. I'll do both.
Firstly I apologise for intentionally posting in the wrong thread (I had my reasons). I won't do it again, actually I won't post anything here again as that was a one time task for me.
Second, I see that you are ready and willing to give me lessons and increase your thanks meter between each other but before teaching me how much time of reading is necessary before you root, let me tell you that I was in xda long before you and I know very well both how much reading is necessary but I also know what the spirit of a community is. There are mods here who didn't get irritated as fast as you. From the speed of your answers I recognise that you must not be older than 25 which doesn't make you mature so @scott_doyland, your opinion is accepted but I was a noob on 2005 and I have performed the root procedure on more than 6-7 phones just by reading so I've done my homework plenty of times and you know what? You don't need 2 hours to root a phone. Actually I need about 30 minutes max including the reading I do on the instructions of each phone. Only on this forum I didn't find all the info gathered and before you jump answering on that, I'm not complaining about this but that's the reason I posted in order to get an answer and avoid the research of 200 pages. It's you guys that got inflamed about that. So take a lesson from a veteran who broke the rules. The idea of the community is to help each other even if the answer was given several times. Some people may not have the time to read or maybe they have read tons of info on other forums and they are visitors like me and can't spent the same amount of time in all forums for each phone they have to root. I'm adraid that if you can't accept this, you are also breaking the rules. Do you see my thanks meter? well, not even one of those thanks was taken from posts like yours. Every single thanks I got was from help providing to noobs and to people who didn't do their homework. Maybe you should visit some forums in the DHD section and see what the spirit of community is all about.
I'm sorry for disturbing the calm waters of your forum but you won't see me again anyway. As I said, I spent many hours on other forums of xda, that was a one time stop for me because I had to root this phone and leave and since this forum doesn't have the most friendly structure in regards to info availability (stickies, etc.) I had to ask. I apologised for posting in wrong thread but I also had to pass the message that people willing to become teachers will have to become students, that's why I answered
Now, go ahead, feel free to start attacking and exchanging thanks between each other. You see, I contributed to your community in my own way. Many of you will double their thanks meters by tomorrow. I don't have the time to continue discussion, I have other things to do so, mods, please feel free and delete this post at some point since it doesn't lead anywhere but just take my feedback if you want and organise better the structure of your forum (if you want).
Ok bro. I have a S-ON, Unlocked Bootloader just like you. There are no way to root after u unlocked bootloader (because u need to update to lastest Hboot in order to UBL). I'd tried all tools i can find on xda and NONE of them can be use to root. There also don't have any clear guide for S-ON with UBL show how to install custom rom and get root.
But after few days digging up the forum, i'd managed to install custom rom + root. I share with you:
After your phone bootloader unlocked via HTCdev, your phone sure will have either HBOOT-1.08.0099 or HBOOT-1.09.0099. You'll need a ClockworkMod recovery image on your computer to install rom + root. And you'll need a working Android SDK with Fastboot to do get ClockworkMod working on ur S-ON phone.
OK let's say now you have fastboot folder alr, and know how to use it.
1. Download lastest clockwork mod .img here: http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager
2. put the file .img just downloaded to the fastboot folder.
3. Turn off phone, then hold volume down + power ---> wait the menu searching for the zip file (of course we ignore this) then press Power again to go to fastboot menu.
4. connect phone to laptop via usb cable.
5. Open fastboot folder, right click choose open command windows here.
5a. If you are on HBOOT-1.08.0099:
Copy this and right click to the command windows, paste then enter, ur phone will automatic restart to CWM menu:
Code:
fastboot -c "mtdparts=msm_nand:[email protected](misc),[email protected](recovery),[email protected](boot),[email protected](system),[email protected](cache),[email protected](userdata),[email protected](devlog),[email protected](hboot)" boot recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
5b. If you are on HBOOT-1.09.0099:
Copy this and right click to the command windows, paste then enter, ur phone will automatic restart to CWM menu:
Code:
fastboot -c "mtdparts=msm_nand:[email protected](misc),[email protected](recovery),[email protected](boot),[email protected](system),[email protected](cache),[email protected](userdata),[email protected](devlog),[email protected](hboot)" boot recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.8-marvel.img
Ok men, now u just download any rom u like, put it to ur memory card and flash rom like normal.
Remember that, everytime u flash new rom, u need to repeat the whole process from step 3 to step 5.
Hope this can help you bro. Cheers for our S-ON
BIG THANKS to this topic http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1374926
Dear guy, your topic not yet help me to S-OFF my phone, but it gave me the temporary solution to install custom rom. Cheers to ur good work!!!
P/S: to the thread creator: Why u gave up so early bro...Xda-developers is great forum.
Ok, because many people are confused and PM me about what's next after unlock, here's the answer. Don't try the Super Tool, it doesn't work. At least for some people.
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
and use that script instead. It will flash Busybox and su to your phone. That's it. You have root acces then.
@Ghekua: If you have unlocked your bootloader then you have already installed the apropriate HBOOT. Just run that script from the post I attached above and you will have root access.
Edit: Oh, sorry, I read your post before edit and got different meaning. Anyway, thanks, I used the post above which is much faster and easier and I'm done.
Ghekua, if you install a custom rom it will already have root access, no need to root a custom rom.
I rooted my stock rom just by flashing cwm and then via cwm flashed a root.zip file from xda.

i know it bro haha. I just post the post there. But i wonder if there is any chance to keep the CWM for S-On so everytime we flash a new rom, we no need to flash CWM again.

Flashing a new rom does not wipe cwm.
Cwm is always there unless you flash a different 'recovery'.

it's true for S-OFF bro. For S-On every time flash new rom need to fastboot to flash cwm again.
(i'd tried to install cwm by rom manager app, by flashable zip downloaded from clockworkmod website, no use)
I find downloading alquez's recovery and replacing the android_info file with the last RUU/update [of same], then flashing via hboot to be the simplest solution [since it works on marvel & marvelc].. I just keep that PG76IMG.zip on my sdcard and swapout android_info as needed [no need to sign or anything]. Of course then if you wanted latest-and-greatest [gsm] you'd root [Heritz guide works across board gsm & cdma], install your Rom Manager and reflash. But I like simple solution that works on both my wildfire s's
I do agree this is a general topic and if anyone has read my simplistic thread responses, I've stated above philosophy repeatedly in various threads.. and it seems to always work

How strange. I'm s-on and I never have to reflash CWM. I've only ever flashed it twice and the second time was just to upgrade to a later CWM.

HELP! Flashing ROM boot issue!

Alright... I'm gonna be the first to say, I probably messed up really bad... So I was running stock rom with TWRP, when for some reason I wiped the entire phone through TWRP, not factory reset I went to advanced and wiped the entire phone. Now this is where first off I say do not smoke weed, you might get cross faded and delete Android. Anyways I downloaded a ROM from Team Venom (Viper), Pushed it through ADB to the phone, and installed the zip... I didn't swipe to install super su (as TWRP prompts) but when I reboot my phone it boots straight to boot loader. I can still access download mode, and TWRP but can't boot into the rom... Is there something I missed? Please help! Thank you!
P.s. I have ADB and Fastboot along with the drivers...
You may want to read the FAQ in the ReadMe thread (Q10 to be more specific).
Flippy, what ReadMe thread, I am unable to find one. Please either a link or tell me how to find it
