Can't use fastboot (unlocked bootloader) - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ive been unable to use fastboot ever since upgrading my firmware.
I unlocked the bootloader previously and flashed with the 4.0.A.2.368 firmware which bought me upto 2.3.3 firmware on my Arc.
Since doing that i've been unable to root (via gingerbreak) or flash anything to the phone itself using fastboot (all i get is waiting for device)
Now I want to root my phone and flash a recovery to it so I can upgrade firmware in future with no problems.
I can still use flashtools, thats not a problem but I can't do anything else can someone help me trying to get this thing rooted and recovery installed.
I've checked the bootloader to make sure if its still unlocked and it is so I'm kinda lost at what to do next.
Any ideas

Hi
Gingerbreak wont work on 2.3.3
Best way is custom kernel to get root and recovery
Im using doomkernel its v good
Do u get blue light when u plug in ur usb (while holding menu key)?
If so, sounds like ya need to download drivers
Hope that helps

Sorted thanks, turns out I had the wrong version of fastboot on my computer and it wasnt communicating with my arc properly, replaced the fastboot and everything worked fine, succesfully installed Doom kernel and installed recovery, plus fully rooted through RootXperia. Everythings fine now, i can do all I need to with the phone, thanks

Glad ya got it going enjoy

No, I haven't. I have locked bootloader(yet). But read about it in some threads. Is this just an offer from me... Read the comments.
Ok finally after several research and try I find the following are the easiest method of getting root on the latest version (for people with unlock bootloader).
1. Flash using Flashtool any unrooted version 4 ROM
I used the following: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1209237
2. Switch off your phone, and boot into fastboot mode. How? When the phone is off, hold the menu button and connect the USB cable to the PC.
3. Using fastboot command, flash the boot image created by Doomlord. Here is the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172885
4. Boot your phone, and enjoy the rooted ARC
Yes kuailan thats the same method I used. Its not just a rooted arc now, with setcpu app you can under/overclock it, and i dunno if any other addons.
Anyway, remind yourself and everyone that once its in that state, never do OTA update as doing that on a bootloader unlocked phone will result in bricked phone. Its recoverable, but requires additional effort. So there's the warning.

[Q] How to exit boot loop

I wanted to downgrade my arc s from .62 to .42 so i can root. I flashed it and after the process finished, i disconnected the phone and it started into a boot loop. I can't do anything now. How to fix this? I tried flahsing it once more but the phone is not recognized. Im afraid that the battery will dry out and afraid that it will brick the phone because when i plug it in to the power suply, doesn't shows any signs of charging.
How can i fix this please? Thanx
Pull battery out to exit the boot loop.
And then reflash the FW using Flashtool.
if i pull it out, wont it brick my phone? Thanx
Why it should brick your device?
How do you put your SIM or microSD in without pulling out the battery?
You can fix flashing a new kernel, like DoomLord kernel v18.

Now that im rooted, how can i update to the latest firmware? As i heard, can i do it over the air? Now im .266 and id like on .62.

landis, the current firmware that he used should be not compatible with the kernel, some Roms not compatible, then i said to him to flash kernel, like DoomLord kernel, than fixed it...
You don't know which ROM he wants to flash, he just flashed .42 FW for root and ended up in a boot loop.
He can solve this with my instructions given in the replies, so there is no need to flash a kernel atm.

Thanx everyone for your replies. I managed to get out of the boot loop but i am still very confused what am i doing wrong because cyanogenmod doest work. I unlocked the boot loader, rooted, instaled clockwork mod, wiped the datas and caches, instaled from sd card and i always get stuck on that blue cyanogen logo while alternating witht the green press android to begin screen, 4 out of 5 times with unresponsive touchscreen. On time it managed to get to homescreen but briefly because rapidly in changed again to that blue screen loading and after a couple times i saw the cyanogen lock screen but without being able to do anything while looping in that booting or loading sequence with that blue logo screen. Im tired and confused of tryin this over an over again, and now im on .266 firmware and i guess because i have unlocked the bootloader i cant update to .42 ota and i cant find another .42 firmware for arc s that wouldnt get stuck after flashing. Any sugestions ? Thanx guys

[Q] [SOLVED] help I messed up and can't get in to CWM

I got my LT18i .42 Locked Bootloader. Rooted with zergrush, installed CWM using the Xperia CWM installer from the market, and all was perfect... Then updated my phone using companion %&@@&%. Then read that I can't root .62, so I downloaded a .42.ftf, flashed it booted it and noticed that now I had a LT15a at first thought it booted so should be ok I'll do a OTA update see what happens. Rooted, CWM installed. Reboot, reboot, press (any key) freezes at boot logo. Using Rom manager to reboot to recovery just reboots normally to android. For the past fiew days I was reading up on this, but could not find any definitive resolution. Tried reflasing proper LT18i .42, .58 using flash tools, and using wotan client. Tried repair with both companion and SE update service, then downgrade with flash tools and with wotan, obviously I don't mean all at once just different methods . Root seems ok titanium works I can get in and edit system/bin, /xbin. I tried manually moving the files for CWM, and changing permissions. All with no luck. Yesterday I came across a post that said that the LT15 room might have changed something to do with mounting the sd. But no explanation. I'm not a complete noob but need assistance on this.
Thanx guys.

I can't tell you for sure but I would suggest you to unlock it (75%) . Download this LT18i_4.0.1.A.0.266_CUSTOMIZED-UK -( mediafire.com/?ie832txe46ia2bh) Always worked for me to do a clean install if i was gonna flash-it, download ROM Manager again and it should work. Gotta love playing. .
I'll Try it Thank you.
flashing with flashtools, or wotan should wipe all left over date, cash, davlik, ect..
unlike using CWM to install update.zip where you need to do it manu.
or am i crazy?
I personally use only flashtool. That does the whole job.

No Cigar. still lockes up at first SE logo if i manualy want to get in, and if i use any software method from within android to reboot in to recovery it simply reboots back to android. Tried (flashing, rooting, cwm) with and without SD. This Sucks, what good is an Android device without CWM.
there has to be some way to get it to fff work.
Ok, so it goes like this.. Flash a new firmware, flash a stock kernel with CWM ( DooMKernel) through flashtool of course and the kernel through fastboot.. U done that?

I've had a similar experience today with a Arc S LT18i. Was on .42 (rooted and some system bloatware
removed). I tried an OTA upgrade last night, but this failed, presumably because I'd deleted some system apps. I then (without reading forums first - big mistake) upgraded with PC companion to .62 and THEN read that I couldn't root it again. After much reading of forums I found a version of LT15i .42 and flashed that - and rooted it again.
Then the problems started, I tried an OTA upgrade, and it failed mid-upgrade, giving me a blue arrow pointing down onto a screen with a yellow triangle of doom with an exclamation mark.
Flashtool didn't want to know for ages, then (fortunately) it suddenly let me flash back to .42. I've rooted it again, and any apps that weren't there have been re-installed. From what I can tell the LT15i (Arc) seems absolutely fine, with no visible difference from LT18i at all.
The question is - should I just leave it as it is and avoid risking bricking it again, or do I really need to try and get an ARC S version of .42 onto it with Flashtool, so I can upgrade to ICS when the time comes. If so, does anyone have a good link to .42 for LT18i pls? Ideally not from uploaded.to as that site was driving me nuts.
Thanks, and good luck to the OP who had similar issues.

That's cool. But with a locked bootloader there is no fastboot
So what I do is flash LT18i 2.3.4 .42 using wotan client, root using zergrush. Now at this point phone can be updated to .62 , using the updater inside the phone AKA - OTA, that way I end up with LT18i .62 rooted, Locked bootloader. It is very important to keep in mind that this method for update will only work if ALL oryginal SYSTEM applications are on the phone.
I tried To Iinstall CWM on a locked bootloader using : NAn's app from market, extreme tweeker, both CMD methods, and manual method using root explorer.
By now I can do it all with my eyes closed hehe, but still can't get in to CWM.

Is it posible to flash firmware .ftf (with flashtools) that is already rooted and has CWM instaled, on a locked bootloader?
also is there any way to flash CWM backup on to the phone, if i cant get in to CWM (convert it to .ftf) ?
Can someone post a link to LT18i firmware that is rooted and has CWM instaled. For locked bootloader (.ftf) ?
OK. So i'm a "GENIUS" LOL
i got a reason to belive that simlinks got screwed.
I failed to manchen that affter i upgraded the firm to 62 with pc companion, i tried to ROOT again but when: DooMLoRD zergRush did not work i decided to give a try SuperOneClick, then FlashTools... Kurrrr.
eaven thugh they all use Mr. zerg's methode there is another choice psneuter, if i uderstand correctly the two methods differ a bit.
So simlinks dont get whiped, nor deleated when flashing, or restoring with seus.
or am i missing something eaven simpler like "reflash with SD inserted But no SIM, take out battery(or DON'T take out the baterry untill rebooting the Phone twice" or some think briliant as such.
like the one for relocking bootloader in The SE X8.
Can i deleate the simlinks and what ever i belive wrong, then UnRoot, whipe, reflash, root, CWM?
Would that fix it?
the phone is usless without CWM
Unlocking BL is not an option for me, i'm afraid
SOLVED
Ok. I managed to install CWM using flashtool. Entering CWM no problems, creating backup no problem, but after restoring from backup the phone was freezing every time.

2. after stock rom installed, then unlock your bootloader, please refer to sony website on how to unlock bootloader.
3. root and install CWM.

[Q] Xperia play Gingerbread to Jellybean/Kitkat

Hi can anyone advise what the problem could be?
I have been trying to upgrade my Xperia play from Gingerbread to Jellybean and failed,
My handset is Bootloader unlock Status = No, although O2 unlocked the carrier so I could use any carrier.
So when I goto Sony bootloader unlock site the phone will not goto fastboot mode. Just says Waiting
When I open Fashtool I have successfully rooted the phone, but when I try to Flash the phone rather than go into Fastboot mode the just restarts.
I am using Windows 7 64bit.
Any help on getting this done is greatly appreciated

I have used search button whilst plugining in USB.
Does that mean bootloader is locked, so impossible to unlock?
The sticker on the back of the phone is W46. Read somewhere that using Flashtool may damage the phone.

SIM Unlocking the phone inst the same as Unlocking the Bootloader. If you Have Bootloader unlock Status = No you can still unlock your Bootloader via the Test Point method.
If you Unlock your phone with the Test Point method you will not have acces to Fastboot Mode, but you can still Flash Kernels via Flash Mode Using the FTF version of it(insted of a boot.img file).
Look in my signature if you want any FTF kernel.

As above, follow the guide above. Since you unlocked via the testpoint and there's no fastboot, you need to have your kernels in a .ftf file format.
Here's a thread with download links to ftf kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2739559
You will need to use flashtool to flash them. The JB ROM can then be flashed via recovery normally.
My Xperia PLAY was locked to O2 as well and testpoint unlocked, and these have been working fine for me so far... although for some reason my phone stopped working with ICS ROMs. GB and JB still works however.
Phone bricked.
I flashed the Lupus JB kernal and then entered recovery menu and deleted formatted and now it just a blank screen as if the phone is off yet plugging in the usb is recognised by computer yet flashtools and Sony companion can't repair or recognise.
Any ideas?
Grover
Exactly what did you delete/format under recovery? All I did was pick the factory reset option, then wiped cache and dalvik cache, and then flashed the ROM and worked fine for me. I'm using version 8 of the kernel however for the extra data space.
Here are the ftf files for the stock original Sony firmware, which you can use to restore your device if flashing goes wrong (.79 is the latest): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=43935357&postcount=2
I formatted the file as you did and it came on with a blank lit screen so I flash the default file in firmware a on flash tools to get nothing but a blank dead screen
Any help is greatly appreciated
Grover
1) Download the .79 ftf firmware and place it in Flashtool's firmware folder.
2) Open up flashtool, and plug in the Xperia PLAY in flash mode (hold back button while plugging in USB). Flashtool should report the device is in flash mode.
3) Press the flash button (lightning symbol) and select the stock .79 firmware, then confirm to flash that.
4) Wait for it to finish flashing. Flashtool will then ask you to reboot the device.
5) Unplug the phone and hold the power button until it vibrates. Let go and it should boot back into the stock Xperia software.
It should now be back to stock, and you can attempt to try custom ROMs and kernels again.
Unfortunately this is where the problem lies. Flash tools doesn't recognise that the phone is there hence can't flash it with stock firmware.
It is In a dead state. Is there anyone who offers a service to Unbrick it and what tools are required?
I am not dettered by having bricked my phone, as this is all part of my learning, although I would appreciated a possible fix to Unbrick it.
Thanks in advance
Grover

Yes, if you unlocked your Bootloader via the test point method for the R800x and the R800i you should have access to Fast Boot Mode. You only don't get access to Fast Boot Mode if you have "Bootloader unlock status: No"(and unlocked via the Test Point Method), witch is about 100% of R800a users.
As above. Sadly, all phones sold from O2 UK have bootloader unlock as no, so the normal way of unlocking won't work and only the tespoint method is avaliable... So no fastboot. Due to that, I buy my phones unlocked and unbranded now. Luckily thanks to the great developers on here we can still root and play around with custom ROMs.
What version of Windows are you using Grover? I'm not sure if it's related but I have problems with adb/fastboot drivers on Windows 8/8.1 with HTC devices. Everything works perfectly on 7 though.
