[Q] help with rooting mts! - myTouch 3G Slide Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been all over this site, trying every method listed to root and nothing works.
Currently have 2.2 loaded on the phone, but cannot get it down to 2.1 via the htc ruu, it ends up giving me error 140 bootloader version error.
i tried this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1189485
also tried this, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1108316
when i was doing the mt3gs rooter, it seems like there was an issue with the exploid, i have followed all instructions as written. I've made a gold card, pdanet is installed, I've got nothing that works.
I assume the main issue is that I need to get to 2.1 instead of 2.2
Can someone please help me?

A new one was posted yesterday: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245086

I tried that and it did not work. the cmd prompt seems to not work when it runs cd /sqlite_stmt_journals

Yup it gets stuck on that part on my side.
There are like 5 different methods to root 2.2.1 and i followed all of them no one really works. Always issues with all of them.

Can't Root using unrEVOked

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=776696&page=29 following this thread i installed the HBoot drivers and then i started unrEVOked 3.14.
It booted into console, then i rebooted again but after then the software on my PC gave me error message "unable to push recovery image to flash" .. ..
- I do change the USB mode
- I have HBoot drivers installed
- I have HTC Sync installed
- I am on Windows 7
- I am using HTC Desire Froyo
Remove HTC Sync.
You need it's drivers, but if you leave it installed it might get in the way.
Uninstalling will not remove the required drivers.

I followed the guide already and i posted the question after following the guide. it stucks and give me the error that i posted abov.e
i get the same error, so this is a valid topic.
there is Nothing that gives us any information about what else to try, bar sitting and waiting for the rEVOked client to be updated.
The latest version of unrEVOked is up. I tried to root my Desire through it. It rebooted my device couple of times (with previous versions I used to get error at 1st boot).
Now, I am getting this error Backup CID is missing.
Can someone guide?
latest revoked worked fine for me
3.21 sorted all the issues i was having.
Yep, the old unrEVOked (3.14) doesn't support FroYo...get 3.21 and you'll be fine

Use that guide. If it doesn't work ( as for me ) use Linux with a Ubuntu live CD. Worked first time for.me.
Windows is crap. Too many things to go wrong that wont be obvious making you sound like a idiot.

Worked first time in W7 x64 Ultimate when I did it with the RC
I have the same windows and latest unrEVOked but it didn't work. It gave me error Backup CID missing
Hmmm,
I have just tried to root my Desire using unrevoked 3 and it seems to go throught the motions but ends on an "internal error couldn't find misc" error message......
I am running a stock O2 Froyo Desire with HBoot .93.......Any ideas?
Try connecting your android in USB storage mode and debugging mode.
My first try gave me the same "internal error: couldn't find misc".
But with the above settings I was able to root my HTC Desire. Thanks unrevoked!
Hi,
A noobie questions.
I have Froyo 2.2 with HBoot .92 and i want to use unrEVOked tool, but before that my sd card has to be empty, or have to format it?
And after i use unrEVOked, i have to flash any custom rom?
Thanx
@ iamtotal, I already have it with those settings... Are you running Froyo?
@ pekas, no you do not have to use a blank sdcard.

Ok, so I have a Win7 x64 box, and have all the corect drivers loaded for my phone.
If I run unrEVOked I get the above error message......So my next step was to run in Virtual XP mode to see if maybe it was a X64 issue....Still the same error.....
Last night I reset my phone to factory defaults and re-ran unrEVOked.....No joy....So after trawling through more forum posts I came across how to run unrEVOked from an Ubuntu live cd.....So I downloaded and burnt off the live cd, ran the script as specified (really neat and easy to use BTW) to get the latest version of unrEVOked and run it.......Guess what......Still the SAME error message......Methinks maybe something screwy with the O2 version of Froyo?
Anyone else had the same issue? Are running an O2 rom?
I am stuck with the same error since the beginning. No success, with all the possible tries. I am not sure what version my FroYo is .. O2 or something but its EU region specific.
Bottom line is .. I can't root my Desire .. :|

I can't get my Incredible to gain root

I got it all figured out thank you for your help
joeyfeffer said:
So I just got my Incredible today. Unboxed it and am trying to root.
I've been following the steps to the T on here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Full_Update_Guide_-_HTC_Incredible#Unrevoked_Method
But after pushing all the files it says to push and then doing the "chmod" stuff when I get to the step to do "/data/local/tmp/rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" it just repeats the line then says "permission denied.
Then I just tried to continue and do the next step.
"chmod cd/data/local" then it just says "Bad mode"
I then still continue with the steps till I get to the last one
"./rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin" and again it just says "permission denied"
So after all this not working I did a factory reformat of the phone and tried again. Still same out come on everything. Then I tried the unrEVOked method and I the HBOOT drivers but the program just says "Failed to flash recovery image"
I have successfully installed AndroidSDK and I know this because I upgraded from the HTC Eris and I've rooted that. I have all the correct drivers (I think at least that stupid VZW media thing may be interfering)
So I just don't know what to do now and I just want to have my phone rooted and get CM6 on it. Any hellp would be greatly appreciated thank you.

It sounds like your system has 2.2 preloaded on it. If that is the case, unrEVOked3 will not work. Also, since the phone is not S-OFF, the other steps you are attempting will not work. You will need to do one of two things.
1. Find unrEVOked 3.2 to root 2.2.
2. Revert the phone to 2.1 and set S-OFF and then root the phone.

Oh and I forgot yeah its on 2.2 because its brand new just got it today. And the steps I was following on the CyanogenMod wiki were to downgrade my phone to 2.1 but thats where I was running into the problems listed below. And you can' get unrEVOked 3.2 until they release it again.
Just grab the latest unrevoked build from their IRC channel. You should be able to find the link easily and it should work to root your stock 2.2

[Q] Desire 2.2

I bought an unbranded/unlocked Desire a few days ago, and it had Froyo preinstalled.
It REFUSES to connect to HTC Sync, and it seems impossible to root using unrevoked too (i've tried Vista, Win7 and Ubuntu). All without success. I have tried EVERY method/guide/tutorial out there.
So my question is this. HOW DO I ROOT?!
I'm thinking of using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
And then using unrevoked on the stock 2.1, but in that thread it says
Update:
The new version of unrevoked3 (3.21) can now root froyo ROMs directly, and a downgrade is no longer necessary if you just want to root and install custom recovery, although there appear to be a few issues with this new release. If you want to rebrand/debrand your phone, rooting won't achieve this and you can use this method instead. If you cannot get the new version of unrevoked3 to work you can also run this and use the older version (3.14) that works with Android 2.1.

So i have no garauntee that unrevoked will work on 2.1 either, and i'm not downgrading for no reason.
Does anyone have any ideas, cause i'm running out of ideas here.

Does it have a new H-boot that unrevoked cant do yet? What is the H-boot on the phone?
Does unrevoked come up with any errors? Have you instaleed the correct drivers, adb for it?
What is your hboot #?
Power off, press down volume and power on should tell you at the top.
Then check the sticky topics, at the top of dev section, as they have solved newest hboot problems.
Ps this is best for the q&a section, good luck, and sure we'll all try and help.
Desire is the source of all suffering.
HBOOT number is 0.93, take it this is too new?
The non-connection to HTC Sync worries me, if it wont connect to the manufacturers software, what is there to make me think it will work with anything else?
Don't quote me on this but unrevocked should work on 0.93,
Best is to get suck into this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709146&highlight=unrevocked
And see how you do.
Goes through the whole deal with drivers etc.
Do you have ADB yet? because you can use adb devices to check to see if your desire is connecting to your computer, but as cjm1979 said you need to get latest drivers from the adb, but seem to remember you have to uninstall htcsync anyway to use unrevocked. But it should all be there in that guide.
But getting adb and drivers is important.
> Uninstall HTC sync 3.x version from your windows box and install 2.x version and then try it ( Important: Disable any firewall/antivirus tools when doing it)
The latest version of unrevoked should work.
Just found this in the unrevocked topic:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725738&highlight=solved&page=36
My HBOOT version is 0.93.0001
Follow the instruction to unrevoked,f after installed the HBOOT driver and enable USB debug, run unrevoked as administrator and connection "charging only",
the unrevoked still not start as follow, any idea?
Solved: I never install HTC sync.
Read all post found similar situation and I install and uninstall HTC sync. Problem resolved.
Never used htcsync for myself anyway.
Ok guys, i found the problem.
This is embarassing, But i forgot to uninstall DroidExplorer which unknown to me, was cocking it all up silently. Uninstalled that, ran unrevoked and it looks to be working, i'm currently on the ClockworkMod recovery screen. Yeah, all working now, and i should be rooted now.
Am i correct in saying that since the phone was unlocked/unbranded, i can now just whack an update.zip on my SD and flash it? Or is there anything else to be done before that (I know enough to do a Nandroid backup before that step)?
Thank you all for helping an idiot solve his non-problem!
I've uninstalled Sync, moved the drivers to system32, ran unrevoked as admin, ran it in compatibility mode, nothing. All required drivers/softwares/fairy dust is present. I really have tried nearly everything listed on tutorials. I've damn near broken googles servers just searching for a fix!
You don't copy any drivers, HTC sync installs in 2 parts - the program and the drivers.
Once installed, go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the program but leave the drivers. This works fine
Then make sure unrEVOked is running BEFORE you connect your phone, and make sure USB Debugging is enabled on the phone
One of the tuts i read said movng the drivers to system32 might help, but did it hell. I'm all rooted now, just installed TitaniumBackup, is it meant to ask for permissions 2000 times every time i do something? It just asked me about 20 times O.O

Once, when you've ticked the box,
Unless your talking about superuser notifications which you can turn of in the superuser app
Desire is the source of all suffering.
You mean the 'remember' box? Yeah, done that too but it keeps popping up asking for permissions anyway.

Yes meant the remember box, is the box always the SU box or is it a grey notification box saying SU access has been granted.

Cannot downgrade DHD

Okay, so since im new to Android i decided to wait a little till i rooted my device. The time came so i went to root to find this crappy 1.84 cant be rooted. I followed guides to downgrade to the older version build 1.32 but it doesnt seem to like me. Ive got an unbranded, untouched, stock device. I got all the adb and stuff working, but everytime i get into boot loader it says CID incorrect. I then tried flashing with a goldcard which was created successfully both manual way and using a tool (yes i used mmc2) but i still get this damn CID Incorrect. Why doesnt this want to work?
Can someone please help me? I really want Android Revolution HD on this thing.
Read this thread:

and in particular post 4. And then you tell us.
I actually used this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=970157
And as i said manually created the gold card too.

[Q] USB brick - Pulling my hair out - Please help!

Hi all
For the last few weeks I have been trying to fix my HTC Desire back to some sort of working state. After awhile, I managed to get back to stock (from CM7), but soon realised I had the USB brick and SD Card issue. For info I used the stock HTC 2.3 Gingerbread RUU and used Alpharev PB99IMG_downgrade.zip for HBOOT (I was using Alpharev S-OFF with CM7).
So, I followed this guide, http://android.modaco.com/topic/309939-usb-brickrickrolledb0rked-fixed/ and managed to mount the SD Card. However, I could not get the update.zip file to apply because I was no longer rooted.
So I followed the guide linked in the USB brick article, http://android.modaco.com/topic/307...ide-now-with-hboot-080-and-os-to-121-support/ and soon realised that I did not have the HBOOT version required. Either 0.75 and below, or, 0.80 and below. I have 1.02.0001.
Not a problem, I thought. I will follow this guide to downgrade, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256 as it specifically says that "...the downgrade does not depend on any version of HBOOT" which is what I need. However, first step is to get a working Goldcard. This is where I start to get into trouble and I'm already losing track of what I'm doing, but I soldier on...
How do I create a Goldcard? I followed this guide, http://android.modaco.com/topic/305672-creating-a-goldcard/ and got stuck at running the ADB command as because my USB is broken, Windows 7 (x64) refuses to see the Phone. Luckily, my father has the same phone, so I put my SD Card into his Desire and managed to create a Goldcard (he is running CM7 on his Desire too).
So Goldcard in hand, I go back to the downgrade guide and then spot my next issue. I can't get Windows to see the phone to use ADB commands and I also can't get Windows to see the phone when it is booted up (the charge light won't even come on now), meaning I can't run the downloaded application.
Not to be outdone I went back to the Rooting Guide and tried both of the downloads with the "step1-windows.bat" command just in case they did work, but both give an error, which on searching, is to do with the HBOOT version being incompatible.
I tried putting on the PB99IMG_downgrade.zip file from Alpharev again, then re-running the HTC 2.3 Gingerbread stock RRU and taking the ROM.zip folder and re-loading it on to the phone, but it hasn't changed the HBOOT version. So my cry for help is.... how can I downgrade HBOOT without using ADB commands or having to have Windows detect my phone? I'm basically stuck with Fastboot and my SD Card.
Even though my phone looks stock, I can't call people as it disconnects straight away, the USB is broken and the battery drains stupidly quickly.
Thanks for any help!
now this IS a sticky situation.. well done on what you've done so far by the way.
On my guide there's a section on how to temproot and flash recovery without USB connection, then flash a recovery that restores usb functionality, but it's only been tested on 2.2 and S-OFF... could be worth a try though

Hi bortak,
Thanks for the reply. It is a bit of a strange situation I agree. I've been putting off signing up and posting for help as I feel quite dumb for breaking my own phone, but I have to admit defeat on this one.

Appreciate you taking the time to post.

you could call HTC and ask if they'd fix it for you, and say that this happened after you did the update.

I´ll have a try
just fixed my desire 1 hour ago and it works.
look at this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1296916
What I did:
I was able to connect my pc and phone through wi-fi and adb worked (adb connect phones-IP-address ) and then pushed, chmod'd 755 and executed zergrush. Gained root via cmd with adb shell in windows and after that I just pushed flash_image and mtd0.img to phone and ran it like you supposed to in the guides (chmod 755 and execute). Rebooted and voila! USB connection is working and now my phone signal isn't dropping anymore - phone fixed!
I fixed my unrootet Phone (official GB 2.3.3, HBoot 1.02, S-ON, USB Brick)!!!!
I wifi connected with adb and got temp root with zergRush!
Then from cmd in adb shell I flashed the misc with mtd0.img!
Rebooting and everything was fine ))
Many thanks to all of you!!!

I can't do both of this, because my phone is not recognized by PC in any way, i must root it without PC.
If you have 2.3 connect to same wifi as your pc and adb connect to your phone's IP. Then run zergrush and you will have temproot over adb from your pc. Then you can flash your mtd0.img and your brick will be resolved

The phone is not seen by pc in any statement, not in bootloader, or fastboot, or recovery. I need to either downgrade to 2.29 rom version, or to root it in some way.
