[APP] Just Player W/ Ampache Music/Video Server - Epic 4G Apps

So i've been using Mandriva and Ampache for quite a while now. Up until recently it was my favorite "free" way (as in free beer and free software) to stream my music directly from my home media server, which is a headless Emachines tower in a cabinet in my living room, through my fios connection and to my phone via my favorite android supported client: Just Player. Now Just Player has been updated to support video it is truly everything Ive wanted as far as media capabilities on my epic. I now have my entire music and video collection on accessible to me wherever i have 4g and besides my electric, my fios, and my sprint bills i don't have to pay another company squat. If anyone would like a good how to on installing ampache post in the thread! maybe i can draw something up for everything i had to do on the server and client sides.

Cool. Vary cool.
Any more specs on the software, version nubers? Etc...
Sent from the Drivers Seat of my Suby txting and Driving doing 100MPH+ in a school zone! Ha.

How did you get this? Market won't let me install it.

Thanks schnowdapowda! Going to try this as soon as I get home.
Have a Linux box at and have been playing with different options. I recently tried Subsonic, which I like, but it's only working for music currently.
Not sure if you tried Amahi server. It's an open source media/web server that has many extentions. Ampache is one if it's "Apps". I ran it but could not find an app to stream to the phone. May be time to open the port for it now .
Can you create playlists on the fly?

How many resources does this use? I want to run it on my mybooklive NAS. I think it has a 800mhz PPC cpu and 256mb of ram.

Ok min reqs are pretty low.. as you can imagine my emachine. Isn't much more powerful. Basically if it'll run apache (or any other web server) you should be cool. So look up the system req's for apache on your device. Besides a web server you will need PHP and MySQL.
Cd's or tapes?

Ok lunatic- justplayer is in the market, not ampache so look for that. The big part for you will be installing the server side.
Taclm- no I hadn't tried that. Ampache meets all of my needs now and yes you can create playlists on the fly. Ps I tried subsonic.. didn't care for it.
Zman- I use ampache 3.3.3.5 and the newest justplayer.

It says that it is not compatible with the Epic 4G, and refuses to let me install it.

Weird. Ill post the apk tomorrow when I'm at my computer. Do you have amapche installed?

Its the stupid new market, need to revert to the old version

[Q] How to force EVO to treat 4G as wifi for apps that works wifi only?

I have few apps that are restricted to work on wifi only.
Since 4G is unlimited and same fast as DSL (in my case) I'm looking for a solution to go around wifi only restriction.
Couldn't find any app that would do that.
Thanks for your help
x2......yea my friends who own that other phone by the rotten apple always throwing that app they have that tricks the phone into thinking its on wifi so they can do facetime as they call it
I have been trying to find the answer to this question myself. This is probably the only thing I have not seen on the android side that iphone was all over. There must be a solution to running WiFi only apps via 3G/4G.
What apps only work on WiFi? I've never seen one yet. (not that they don't exist, just curious) You may want to talk to the developers, seeing as any app is allowed to use 3G/4G by default.
Nova is what I was referring to. It's a gameloft title. The game is set up to allow for multiplayer marches via WiFi. But with 3g unrestrictor on the iPhone you could play via 3g. It was pretty sweet to drop some head shots while sitting in lax or dulles how do suggest I propose this functionality to the developers?

also uploading to Youtube can only be done on Wifi
Evidently Grooveshark vip has this problem with hq songs as well. I knew I shouldn't have paid $30 for an app. I miss my 3g Unrestrictor.

The $30 is actually dirt cheap. It's a music streaming app with a library of about 22 million songs. The $30 is for an annual membership.
By comparison that's 3 months (or 2 for multiple devices) worth of Rhapsody which has 10 million songs. Although I have used Rhapsody and there are pros and cons to each. Rhapsody has more organized search results, but Grooveshark allows you to search other users playlists, which is where I am finding a lot of new great music.
Overall the amount of music you can find and the overall interface on Grooveshark is better. But I'm learning now that it's quite buggy in this latest 2.08 revision. I'm hoping for a quick move to 2.09 and hoping they add scrobbling to last.fm like their desktop/laptop version does.
Overall though it's awesome to have so much music on demand at all times.
^^ so you paid $30 for a membership to an app because the library of songs is bigger? so how long would it take you to listen to 22 million songs as opposed to 10 million?

I loved the band "The Grays". Grooveshark had it, Rhapsody did not. I've noticed that for many other bands/acts and radio station releases too. 22 million means they're more likely to have what you want to hear.

Good for you. My cable is flakey and for some reason dyndns keeps dropping out on my NAS. Believe me when I say I tried to go a similar route. But I don't want to leave my computer always on (thus the NAS) and I'm lazy and my music collection is a MESS! What's an id3 tag anyway. But really I like the radio function. Its like having Pandora rolled into it. And I love searching through other people's music collection. It's like the old school days of going to Top 10 Records, except everything is paid for already! I like.

To get back on topic, is there really no CDMA 3G workaround to fool Sprint and Grooveshark (or the EVO itself) into thinking you are on wifi when you are only using 3g?
This is an age old problem that bad programmers always tend to implement. If a feature, method, resources may not exist one should check for what may be missing without assumption. In this case they have assumed that anything but wifi has enough bandwidth (resource) when it could obviously be incorrect.

Most Gameloft games, (and HD ones especially) can only be bought straight through Gameloft's site. Its not too bad. Nova is $5 for the HD version (read: the kind that runs on the Evo). You could have it billed through Sprint if you look for their wap-like apk file. Definitely look up Let's Golf 3d. Its free for us Evo users . That's how I got their gateway apk, which takes you to the mobile store and you can buy games on your Sprint bill.
Nova is a fun game, but its usually buggy over wifi, so I never thought to try it on anything slower. Now that you mention it, all the Gameloft games require wifi, huh? I hate those kinds of restrictions. I wish you all luck in finding a 3G unrestrictor.
Any luck?
I'm freakin dying to play Modern Combat 4 online with 4G on my Galaxy S3!! Has anybody figured this mod out yet? I'm willing to rewrite and modify some code for this one you guys! And also, if iphones can run android, why can't Androids run iOS???? Is I possible?
iPhones can't run android....the system itself it different
Maybe iPhones can run android on an emulator, but that's completely different. Android on iOS is like trying to run a desktop EXE on your Android. Two completely different architectures.

Widows desktop EXE IS possible on Android!
Android is a very open source OS and can be modified create custom ROMS and install other Operating systems.
Such as: Windows Mobile, Windows RT, Windows XP, Full Ubuntu OS, and Ubuntu Mobile (coming soon)
Here is a post on an HTC HD2 running on Windows RT:
http://www.xda-developers.com/windows-mobile/htc-hd2-refuses-to-die-now-runs-windows-rt/
Here is another link to a tutorial on how to install and run Wimdows XP on Android:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EUE-gJmcGKk
Here's another tutorial on bow to install the full Ubuntu OS on android:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d_diU7i7Z0
Here is a heavily modified custom iOS ROM running on an Android phone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LrVLMyINhk
And also, here is a video on some Chinese guy running iOS on an old HTC Android Phone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IOEqpJtr_E
But finally, here is a link to a page that some guys are making this project called iEmu and are cooking up an emulator boot loader that will boot iOS on different devices.
http://m.geek.com/geekdotcom/#!/ent...un-ios-on-android-or,4e668d9bd298d13d03000004
So IT IS yet to be possible (if the iEmu project succeeds) to run (or emulate) iOS on an Android devices sir. But back to question A:
Is Modern Combat 4 online over 4G possible yet?????

How hard is it to do this?
Plug in USB, turn on Disk Drive mode on phone, open windows explorer, find the appropriate folder and put your music or whatever else you want on there.
Much more faster then using other programs. iTunes is a horrible program, don't even know why you would touch it with a 10ft pole.
HTC Sync 3.0 introduced iTunes syncing/Windows Media syncing
its glitchy on Windows 7 and Vista but it works fine on XP
sometimes it won't detect the phone on Windows 7/Vista
but once HTC gets the kinks worked out, it will be officially available to the US.
Currently 3.0 isn't really supposed to be made available for US phones, but it does work with the Incredible.
ya... this really cracks me up.
reminds me of the CNET iphone vs android review that gave android negative points because it was so DIFFICULT to DRAG AND DROP your music... SRSLY?!?!

[Q] The best true (non-cloud) audio streaming apps?

Hello all,
In light of the recent congressional events regarding ("shhhh") downloaded music, I am now in the wanting to play it safe mode. At my age I have more too loose.
What I'm looking for is the best home to phone streaming app that does not also utilize web based streaming like Audiogalaxy and Subsonic. I am now using both of these but would like to see if there are any alternatives which...shall we say...'are more private'. Simply an app that does not require any website registration but only needs ones own IP to access music.
I would also welcome discussion on the legalities of steaming already downloaded music (home to phone).
Thanks for any thoughts on this topic.
Edit: Now trying Gmote. Can anyone recommend a better one?
Just use Grooveshark.
if you have a daap server at home, say itunes or WDLXTV firmware, there is a simple daap client in the market that works well

Thanks for the reply. After trying Gmote for a couple of days I've decided to ditch it. It tends to start/stop too much on a 3g network, and the UI is horrid. The daap server sounds interesting. If you could recommend one that will work on either XP or W7 I'll try that...assuming there is such an animal.
Is there any app to stream live radios station ?
I move from WM to Android, and I would like to know if there is any app to stream live radio station Wm normally use WMP, but android doesn't support Wmp
please if some one know something about it point me to the right direction.
there are ways to use VLC to do it.

Not yet, have looked that one over a bit. Gmote lags too much on 3g so I'll try Homepipe next. Oh yea, and my Bucs almost came back on your Ravens last Sunday. If only Freeman had started his "famous" quick offense earlier.
@dsuare021979 For music streaming try:
Pandora (unlimited access is 36/year but has the best quality sound IMO.
A Online Radio (the "A" is part of the app name)
iheartradio
Last.fm
Thank you for the help, but none of them work with the radio station I normally stream
MEGA 97.9 NY. I hope we get an app like wmp soon.

Checked into Homepipe a bit more closely and it's another type that requires a website registration, which is what I'm trying to avoid. Gmote is what I'm looking for, but it's too buggy for me. Guess I'll keep looking but use Audiogalaxy in the meantime. I like Subsonic but on the EVO it has a tendency to repeat the first song all the time. Anyway, thanks for the input.
Just a question to see if you know something that I don't... if you go through and Retag all of your mp3s there should be no real way to see where they came from... ripped from your own cds or otherwise.... at least that's my opinion. But maybe you know something that I don't?

My only experience with re-tagging is to get the files to look right in Audiogalaxy. I collect alot of "Greatest Hits" albums and most of the tracks each have their own album tag. I wish I knew the answer to your question for my own benefit. Anyone else?

Lumia 900 - What I need to switch

Hi
I am interested in buying the lumia 900 as soon as its on the market in my country. just a couple of weeks off.
anyways, im on android now. not doing very much with the phone, but there are a few things that are must-haves for me.
so, id be glad if anyone could take the time to check if there is a counterpart for the lumia for the following:
- podcast app that automatically loads my podcasts (video&audio) during the night using my wlan according to a time schedule (on android, beyondpod does that for me)
- playing divx and other popular internet movie formats without any decoding etc. (android on sgs2 does that out of the box)
- sending/receving emails with all kinds of attachments
- streaming from and to the smartphone to my pc/tv (allshare from samsung does that for me)
- backup app that uploads all my taken pictures to the cloud ONLY when I am connected to a wlan (not 3g, my dataplan is not large enough)
- full torrent client, not remote only (ttorrent on android)
- moving any kind of files to the device without any restrictions. drag and drop preferred.
that are the must-haves for me if I make the switch to windows phone.
thanks and br

If those are "must haves" then don't waste your time. I don't see why you would need a full torrent client, but it can't and won't exist on WP... Along with some of your other points

If your not going to use torrents on a mobile network I would just keep the android phone as a media player and for games. You can still use it on wifi for torrents. I'm doing this with my inspire because I was worried about app selection

hmm and apart from the torrent client? is the lumia capable of the other points?

kinda limited it seems - no wonder it has difficulties to penetrate the market.

There are numerous, countless, exhaustive posts ALL OVER the internet, not only here, about what Windows Phone is and isn't. I think it's ridiculous, annoying, and pretty ignorant to continue to post comments like this. You came in asking for answers, they were provided, there is no need to throw in a fanboyish jab.
I really don't see the need to receive .psd attachments on my phone, I really don't. I don't see the need to use it as a flash drive, I never did when I had the ability to on WinMo or Android. I also don't see the need to. I understand others have different needs... And I respect that, I just don't see the need to call it limited because it doesn't do things I personally consider unnecessary. I mean, with that logic, Android is "kinda limited it seems" because it can't last anything on battery, it can't run stable, it can't give me a consistent experience, it has stolen IP everywhere, it has an asshole CEO, etc, etc...
I hope you find a phone that suits your needs, the Lumia (and Windows Phone in general) is a great experience.

Zune player lets you sync podcasts and set it to download them as soon as they are available using WLAN. You can set it to 'download 3 latest episodes' for example. Scheduling when it downloads them is not available, but I don't see why you'd not want them on your device as soon as they are available.
- playing divx and other popular internet movie formats without any decoding etc. (android on sgs2 does that out of the box)
While I am not sure if WP will support every codec out there, the only way to upload a movie to WP is using Zune, and Zune automatically decodes the movie to the proper format. It takes 15-30 minutes to do this but you don't have to worry. You just drag the movie you want to your device and Zune takes care of the rest.
Another option is to get an awesome app called Plex and set up a HTPC at home which will allow your windows phone to stream any movie in your collection from anywhere that has an internet connection. 3G Data limits may be an issue for this method...
- sending/receving emails with all kinds of attachments
WP email client can do all this stuff. Infact the I find the WP email client as good if not better than Android and much better than iOS.
- streaming from and to the smartphone to my pc/tv (allshare from samsung does that for me)
Streaming form computer to smartphone: PLEX does it very well.
http://plexapp.com/
Streaming from smartphone: various DLNA clients are present on some windows phones. I am not sure if Nokia has one, but my old LG and Samsung Focus had it.
- backup app that uploads all my taken pictures to the cloud ONLY when I am connected to a wlan (not 3g, my dataplan is not large enough)
WP was the first device that allowed things to be backed up to the cloud automatically. However there is no Wifi only uploads. It will do it in 3G or Wifi. The picture quality will be compressed and they will be smaller in size.
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsphone/en-us/howto/wp7/pictures/upload-pictures-to-the-web.aspx
- full torrent client, not remote only (ttorrent on android)
Not available on WP
- moving any kind of files to the device without any restrictions. drag and drop preferred.
There is a homebrew solution for this but the device needs to be unlocked for you to apply it. I personally wouldn't bother with this considering I have a tiny USB key on my keychain that is larger than any WP out there (Other than the fujitsu one )
that are the must-haves for me if I make the switch to windows phone.

Using Disney Inifinty Base and Figures to play movies.

Hello everyone! I have no experience when it comes to how nfc works, especially when it comes to the Disney Infinity base and figures, but I had a really cool idea when thinking of my friends young son. I was wondering if there was any way to get the base to speak to a PC, so that when I place a figure, it would play the correct movie associated with that figure.
With my limited knowledge, I would assume you would have all the movies ripped to a drive on your PC, then once you figure out how to get the base to speak to the PC, you would run a script or program that would recognize the figure and then play the correct movie, so a Buzz Lightyear figure would play Toy Story, a Baloo figure would play Jungle Book, etc.
The kiosk in the stores worked in a similar way, it would play a demo video when the figure was placed on the base, I was just wondering if there was any way to do this at home. It would be cool to run something on a HTPC so that the little ones could grab their toy, place it on the base, and their favorite movie would start playing automatically.
Any advice on what to research would be greatly appreciated.
Alright, so I'm pretty late to the party, but this isn't going to be possible without drivers for the base under Windows. Oh wait, they don't exist.
It DOES work as a generic HID device under Windows, but with no way to activate the device, good luck even parsing the raw input.
Best course of action is a USB sniffer with a console. You'll need to read the init process from the console, and then replicate that. Then it's just a matter of reading the data sent back.
I'm not sure if the codes on the figures are unique, but I'd guess they are. You'd have to have some fun getting dumps and matching them up to what the figures are. Nobody seems to care about Infinity. Most people care about Amibo, or I guess Lego Dimensions.
Then, once the hard work is done, you'd just launch VLC with the correct video file as an argument.
