[Q] 1st time EVER rooting - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I know this has been on here a few times but I am new to this whole thing with modding phones a forums and stuff. So I have a EVO 4G i just got about a month and a half ago. When I got it it originally had android 2.2 but the guy at Best Buy that sold it to me turned it on and did the OTA 2.3 update saying it would make my phone so much better. Well I tried using unrEVOked3 and it came up with "error: failed to get root. Is your firmware too new?". Is there anyone that can help me out with doing it any other way? Just keep in mind we need to do this rooting for dummies style as I am as noob as you get with this. LOL. I will put up all the infor from my phone so anyone that needs to know does. Thanks ahead of time!

What exactly does a "root" allow me to do. I know I can make my phon e hot spot is there anything I could do with it?

unless you actually want to use hotspot or wanting to use the full power of your phone without all the crap add-ons that sprint puts on there, then don't root. lol.
Root allows you to have magical powers that will allow you to be a little *****. :-d
But mainly it gives you magical powers. :-D

If you have to ask, then you may want to do more reading; no disrespect. Though you can use the hotspot for free, remove stock apps, install custom roms, theme, change the bootanimation and splash screen, over/under clock the processor, ect.

what is a good site or thread that I can look at that can tell me everything I need to know in regards to that.

please read up before asking a question u can answer for yourself..google is your best friend

[Q] i just got my evo

hi, guys. i just got my evo on august 6th. i tried using neckface's root method but got the message 'main version is older - failed'. can i still root my evo?
these are where mine stands now:
firmware version - 2.1-update1
build - 1.47.651
software - 1.47.651.1
pri - 1.40-003
i'm a linux user and comfortable with the command line so i'm happy to use any method you guys suggest and i'll even be happy to get my feet wet with adb.
please let me know if there's any way to root my phone.
thanks.
This is a question, therefore it belongs in the Q&A section.
i'm sorry. i'll move it right now.
It does belong in a different section, but to answer it, you can use Simpleroot (found in this forum) to root a .1 phone.
There are many ways to root your phone. Simple root will work as well as doing toast 1 and 2.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701245
This can give you some directions. Also most of the main guys that develop on the Evo are on #htc-evo freenode.net chat room.
Yep. But Simpleroot's the easiest way for a new user, which is why it's the only one I mentioned.
Before we shove the guy over to Q&A, maybe his phone could be used to extract the PRI 1.40. Especially since the Op has Linux knowledge.

Only ones ive tried are toasts and simpleroot.. use simpleroot bro. Have fun with ur evo

I have the same specs as the first post.
Just my PRI is 2.33_003
I am also using windows 7
I am comfortable using DOS and all that.
I just never have rooted a phone before, but this is a phone i bought that was flashed to work with boost mobile.
When I hold down the power and down button it shows S-OFF HBOOT 2.10.0001
Thing is....when i install titanium back up or wireless tether....it says i am not rooted.
from what i know revolutionary won't work with my hboot version and simple root is next to impossible to find now since all the links are broken to download the needed files.

Omg help please

Im going to make this simple...since froyo..sniff...multitouch and tethering tried rooting and i did do th ota update btw so i guess thats my initial issue

So what is your question? Not to sound like an ass, but you sound like a 5 year old who just dropped his ice cream cone!
Have you searched for what you are looking for already? There is a lot of threads that deal with 2.2 and tethering.
From what I can decipher from your horrid grammar is that you installed the OTA over your root and now multitouch and tethering don't work.
For right now you're screwed. Should pay attention to the forums when it said to NOT apply the OTA until it was rooted. Oh well. Sorry.

I was thinking more along the lines of Capt. Kirk on the original Star Trek: ""Was rooted....did ota....now...my...phone...doesn't.....work" LOL
ya and just like alot of us he is waiting for scotty to beam us up...
I;m given her all I gots cpt...The froyo is pushing 2.2...anymore and she gonna blow...LOL!!!
You've been here over 2 years and don't know to avoid OTA's or even more pathetically how to ask a question?
not sure how you installed ota over a rooted device. maybe you only rooted with no nand unlock and stayed on stock rom. i rooted and nand unlocked when I first got the phone and went to custom roms, and this would give me an update error of the triangle with the ! in middle when ota updates were released and i tried to install update. don't make it simple, try to give more detail please. there is talk about droid multi touch keyboard not working on 2.2 and talk of no wireless tether working either. it's been said that certian roms with godzsons kernel will get you wifi router to work, but it changes your cam down to 3mp. I have htc ota froyo 2.2 (rooted) odex rom from netarchy and was able to find that a search for wireless tether come up a new version not on the market. search for wireless tether 2.0.5 pre7. If you still have root on your phone, that will give you wireless tether without messing up your cam. good luck
I know this has probably been asked before, and I know that it is probably in the forums but I don't have the actual time to fully search right now. Is it possible to downgrade to an earlier version of android on the Evo, then root? I know when 1.6 was released for the G1 and MyTouch, you could go back down to RC29, exploit the loop and then root with the new 2.1. Any answer, no matter how simple of one, would be greatly appreciated.

[Q] New and want to root

I would like to start with an apology,
I have been reading what I could for a couple weeks now and am just honestly confused.
I have a sprint evo 4g and would like to root it.
I have seen a few posts saying it can't be rooted because I took an update a few days ago and don't know if I blocked myself from root. Also I was wondering if I just reset to factory would it undo the block?
Again I'm sorry if this question has been previously answered.

I am new here to, as far as posting. I love this forum, but there is ONE bad problem; there is TOO MUCH information on some topics. Search is easy to say, but very hard to do and sift through sometimes HUNDREDS of posts and still not be able to find what is needing to be found.
I swear, I wanted to find if there was a STOCK ROOTED ROM, available to me, and all I could find after an hour was a listing of I think maybe 50 ROMS, and NONE of them stated it was a ROM that would unroot my phone, or if my phone would stay rooted after the flash. I still dont know. I gave up looking.
I purchased a launcher pro license also, but I'm finding that I like GO Launcher EX and most of the GO Dev team's apps better. It's far more customizable and bacon-y.

Crappy? I own both phones and the 3d is nice, it has a couple bugs that need to be addressed but the dual core makes it much faster and I'm getting about 13 to 16 hours battery life on a stock battery, I'm barely getting a little more than that on my extended battery in the EVO... Sidenote: the OTA gingerbread update made me switch phones, my og evo hasn't been the same since

I've seen people with my version rooted, but don't understand enough yet so I thought it would be appropriate to ask. Again I have been reading about rooting this phone since I got it, but as this would be my first root I wanted to be certain I moved forward correctly first.

Here is a stock rooted rom for when you get root http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830153 There are a lot of things to view in this forum but honestly it takes time to understand stuff. I did not learn to decipher new from old and right from speculation right away. You got to sip through the crap and especially before asking certain things. Hey better yet PM a person if you have a question and you think they may be able to answer you. The mods made changes in this forum as well as others a while ago to make developers post things in a certain manner to make it easier. I read this from one of the stickys... which I recommend everyone to read..
[ROM] 08/03/11 | SPRINT LOVERS | 2.3.3 | 4.24.651.1 | Radio/Wimax/PRI All-In-One
[Kernel]Golden Monkey 1.1 (31-July-2011)
etc.... take a minute and take it all in it could be overwhelming

some people with your version were rooted prior to the new software upgrade so that is why you see them rooted. Right now you have to wait and believe me when it is rooted you will know and no need to ask anymore. Keep checking Develpment section.

Yes, you are able to acheive root through flashing a pre-rooted rom but aside from that, no, you cannot get root just by re-rooting. S-off just means the security flags are off for your device meaning the boot loader doesn't discriminate files. As long as it's PC36IMG.zip you should be good to go. If you want an appropriate way to flash roms, I suggest looking at twrp. It's sexy as hell and I love the red rum theme for it.
It's the first themable recovery, and it looks great. Then you can look at getting cm7 or any other rom you want regardless if you want AOSP or Sense.

Thanks. I remember when I took OTA update and thought that I was screwed, but only to find I was S-off. There was a thread where I flashed amon ra recovery and was able to flash a custom rom (mikmik). I went back stock and have not messed around with my EVO (other phones and tablets Lol). Just been out the EVO loop lately and was not sure if flashing amon recovery was the preferred method still.
Going to take a look at the recovery you suggested and give it a go. I'm just so use to cwm. Even having amon was a different feel for me.
The dual core processor is probably the difference other than that is the same crap and I forgot to mention about the 3d camera its horrible!! Htc said you don't need glasses I just a video for a few seconds and got dissy it doesn't make any sense about the whole 3d deal. And also why would they lower the megapixel of the camera specially if your going to have a 3d phone? I think no body is able to use the 3d feature because of the quality

honestly, why did you do that??i just looked at androidcentral.com and the update doesnt fix anything special..anyway im sure a dev will have a rooted version soon..and just like he said, did it change the hboot?
You should always assume that an OTA update will break root (since it will not have Superuser installed) and that it may NAND Lock your phone (take away your S-OFF). If you want the update just wait around for a short time and a rooted version will appear here.
Well, try using an app that requires root permissions to see if it broke it, like titanium backup.

Hboot version is 2.16.0001
It was not clear from your OP if you had already rooted and then took the OTA or you wanted to know if you could still root your phone.
That is the same Hboot as the previous OTA so you may still be able to root with Revolution if you have not already. If you did already root your phone you need to check to see if you still have S-OFF and a recovery that you can use to get CM loaded.
Boot to recovery (hold Vol - and Power button)
What version of HBoot is it?
Cardinal Rule:
Once rooted, never bother accessing the OTA section of your Sense ROM.
Sorry, I have never rooted and am a complete rooting noob.
[my reason is that I've had blown speakers, cracked screens, etc. and have had 5 different replacements from Sprint and don't want to void my warranty unless I can get it back to make it appear as though I've never rooted]
I did find that this Hboot version still seems to be supported with the new root methods. I have one real quick question, and I have a hard time sifting through the posts, threads, forums.
I want to root, flash a new ROM and want to be able to recover my stock Sprint ROM in case I need to send my phone back for the aforementioned issues. If I follow the root procedures and install Amon_RA's backup and backup the current ROM, I should be able to flash that ROM and get back to S-ON? or would I have to go through some procedure to get back S-ON?
Again, my apologies for posting what's been posted probably 1000 times, you can just link me to a thread....I haven't been successful in my searches for a definitive answer. And the "noob guide" sticky on the forum hasn't been updated to the new root methods, so I'm not sure what will brick me and what is usable.
yes, I will never OTA update after rooting, but in case I want to get back to a stock ROM from Sprint for warranty trade in purposes.
follow up noob question to rooting, all the proper radios and account information will be imported into my phone after flashing a new ROM? Or will I have to know specific radios, PRLs or basebands after I root. It's my primary device so I can't afford to be without.
Damn. Just rooted a few days ago under the assumption Sprint has moved on as far as supporting the EVO.... Dig root but I hope this doesn't create a problem when the update is forced on me.
You can always turn off auto update, and you can also hit cancel if the auto updater pops up. You do not Have to ever update your phone if you dont want to
And if you do decide that you want the update you can wait for a rooted version to appear on XDA and flash that.

*noob alert* Those normally appear in the Development forum, correct? Is there a particular title I should be looking for?
No offense, and I really mean that, but you should not root your phone if you are that worried about the consequences. If you aren't willing to accept that Sprint may be able to tell you rooted you phone then deny you warranty repairs just stick with what you have. Once you get past that point then its time to have some rooting fun.
Seriously though, everyone is going to tell you how great root is, but I bet 60% or better never actually do anything with their phone that would have required root to being with!
But to get back to a factory state, all I'd need to do is flash a Sprint RUU and turn S-ON. I'd assume that's pretty straight forward, I was just curious if anyone here knew the best instructions that were easy to follow.

Using older root methods (pre-Gingerbread), yes. But the new root method for GB/Hboot 2.16 installs a new, non-official hboot - 6.16. No one has been able to get the s-on tool to work or downgrade to a different hboot. You can flash an RUU that will take you back to stock, but you cannot gain s-on. Whether or not Sprint cares about the s-off 6.16 hboot, I don't know. Sprint is supposed to service rooted phones as long as the firmware is stock. If it's not, they'll RUU for you. You may have problems or you may not, kind of depends on who you deal with.
The revolutionary root method is still in a beta phase, what I believe they call a "developer preview" or something. Perhaps once it's released officially there will be an easy way to gain s-on.
I think that if you are worried about rooting or don't know why you would be rooting ("it seems cool" is not a legitimate reason) then you shouldn't do it. But that's just my opinion.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
my reason is that I'm sick of Sprint/HTC's flaky software that breaks things like wireless-n, my ability to stream music/contacts with my car stereo over bluetooth, icons constantly disappearing after reboot, Sense rebooting itself, etc. I don't care about its "cool" factor, I want control - its android, right? otherwise I'd just go get an ibone.
Thank you for that update on the 6.16 Hboot change and S-off/on status, its very helpful. Any thoughts on my question of new ROMs will know how to contact the Sprint network with all my information properly, or do I have to do something fancy to that.
I don't know...last month I couldn't root 2 or 3 weeks ago root pops up for GB 2.3.3 I rooted my phone and to tell you the truth I ain't gonna lie I'm still a noob when it comes to rooting...but I think once you try it yo ass ain't never goin back lol cuz I've been on CM7 this whole time and I'm blown away I'm gonna try out vaelpak RC2 tonight when I get home there's just so much you can do...but that's jus my opinion
Spectacles, Testicles, Wallet & Watch, evO²·³·³
does anyone know what sense version this update is or is it still the crappy sense 1.0

[Q] Frustrated, need root help, yes, I'm a noob.

I've searched, and I've searched, and I've searched...
And I'm still confused.
There's so much old info out there, so many different versions of the same phone, and so many new words I'm not used to, I just can't find the right set of instructions that I need for my phone. All I want to do, is a simple root, and get those stupid freeloading apps that "S" pre-installs off of my phone; I want maps and telenav to stop starting automatically on bootup; I want my battery to fully charge, and I want my mobile hot-spot! I don't want special roms (I'm only 95% certain I know what they are), or anything else special for that matter. Just access to fix my phone so it's not completely useless and constantly rebooting the home screen due to lack of ram.
Here's my stats:
Android version:
2.3.3
Baseband version:
2.15.00.0808
Build number & Software number:
4.54.651.1
If you need any more info, I'll happily post it.
I am NOT asking for someone to hold my hand through the process, just to point me in the direction of the correct guide. I must have read at least 15 different guides now, and haven't a clue which one is the one I need to use.

I would suggest that u search for revolutionary.io and you will get the info u need. I've used it on 2 of my 2.3.3 evos

I used revolutionary and it was painless. Follow the instructions on the site and the assosiated information and you will not have an issue.
Once rooted you can install another recovery (amon ra) or just use clockwork which revolutionary offers to install. Perform a backup in recovery and reboot your phone.
Get titanium backup and you can start removing the apps you want.
That's what I did, hopefully it helps a bit.

Thanks, revulutionary is exactly what I needed. Seems like every guide I searched and read, went other directions.
maz - I was giggling about the dude remark, not mad about it (hence the "lol"). Seems maybe you need to save that chill pill for yourself.

Revolutionary is good. I recommend you read more about custom ROMs after that, there's a good chance you will find something that suits you better than your stock ROM. MIUI and CM7 are both great ROMs to play around with. Make a backup before you do anything with ROMs.
I've helped alot of my friends that are new to android/smartphones/rooting to understand it all and get up and running, if you need help just let me know.
