I just bought a keyboard dock which is working great, but was wondering if it might be possible to change it so the "Mail"button opens up the gmail app rather than the default mail app.
Anyone know if this could be done and how?
Hi I just bought the same and love it, however I had exactly the same question. Do you by any change already had an answer elsewhere?
Thanks in advance
thats funny because i bought the logitech keyboard case and i want to do the opposite. My mail button opens up the email app when i want it to open up the gmail app. Trade? Hahahaha
Same here, when I hit mail it opens up the default e-mail app and not Gmail :-( Same with the browser button, I want it to open Dolphin HD.
What ROM are you guys using?
Cheers,
M

That's the same thing he wants, not the opposite.
I have the latest Overcome ROM on mine, is it possible for the keyboard to be mapped differently?
Is there a solution? I want to open Kaiten if I press the mail button - but I can't change it.

Hi. I just got the Galaxy S and set up my uni's Microsoft Exchange Push e-mail on it. It's working well but it's a bit of a pain to open the email app every time I get a new email.
Is there a widget that displays your more recent e-mails? I used to have a HTC Touch HD before so something like the sense e-mail screen would be amazing...
I've had a look around the Market and this forums but no luck so far. Has anyone come across anything like that?
Thanks in advance
correct me if i am wrong but in the normal mail client of the galaxy u can also enter how recent your email must be? so it doesnt show everything all the time?
Not sure you are answering the question here
THe idea is to have a preview of the recent mail on a widget without opening the mail app
I have this kind of widget with Touchdown but the problem is that you have to pay for this app and it's 20$!!
I didn't find somwthing like the sense widget for the mail ...

Nicolas
Moxier Mail has a preview widget, of sorts, or use Pure Messanger with K9 plugin.

Pure messenger (1.49 Euro i think)

But i found it a bit slow and limited with touchwiz
Works well as a scrollable widget on Launcher Pro though
ah yeah indeed i misunderstood the question. but i dont see the problem anyway when opening e-mail when u have new mail. u even get a nice popup in the top-bar that u have new mail which u can instant open from there..
but then again, maybe it could be better with a widget yea
Thanks for the advise. Guess I'll live with the default email client. It's no problem it's just that 80% of the email I get isn't important so it's nice to get an instant preview to see if it's worth reading
Sorry if this is not worth creating a thread.. But I am wondering what you guys use for your 3 buttons you get to assign anything to do for suggestions for myself.. I can't seem to think of any good ideas, I'm sure some of you have some pretty good ideas to help me.. Thanks a lot
1: Twidroyd Pro new tweet popup activity
2: Messaging
3: Launcher Pro.. w/ home button set to show notifications within LP. So home then notifs
I haven't even bothered to assign them to anything. Would probably be more efficient to just keep shortcuts on the home screen. I mean you get 4x4 apps per page with 7 pages that's 112 shortcuts. I don't really see the need to assign 3 buttons more.

I use them for the 3 things I use the keyboard for most: Messaging, Google Voice, and Talk. Once everyone starts using my GV number I'll probably replace messaging with Gmail. But I figure while I have the keyboard out those are the apps i'm most likely to be using, so I made them the shortcuts.
Hey Guys and Gals of XDA,
Kinda wondering if anyone has come across an app that will change how android handles when we get a new gmail email.
Currently when you get a new email you get a notification in the drawer.. Im looking for an app to change that. I dont want any notification in the drawer. I just want an unread email number to show up on the icon on the home screen. SMS message app does this when you get a new message.
If anyone has any known apps or wants to develop one id be full game..
Thanks
That is not possible for the time being. It used to be, but then GMail removed the API that allowed this (for security reasons)

We will have to wait until GMail offers this through some other type of functionality.

Use the plug in for Go Launcher (Go Notifications), of course, implies that you have to use Go Launcher, but it's a very good launcher.

The same problem I mention affects Go Launcher too (as well as any other apps that used to provide unread count)
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.gau.golauncherex.notification&hl=en
-------Important--------
The Gmail app has updated to new version and the API we uses to access your Gmail in our Notification app is being removed in Gmail.
We will continue support Gmail notification if your Gmail app doesn’t update to the newest version. But once your Gmail is updated, the notification option will be removed from GO Launcher.

So, this is a gmail thing, don't upgrade to the latest version or downgrade to the previous version. I haven't upgraded to the latest version, my notifications show up.
How do you enable dialing contacts by spelling out their name on the dial pad? This was my most heavily used feature on my TB. I'm hoping I don't have to flash a custom rom just for this! .. thx!
I know I'm using the exDialer which supports both speed dial (long press a single number) and the dial by name feature. Both of which are lacking from the stock dialer.
I'm also using exDialer and I like it a lot. Way better than the stock dialer.
After you bring up the dialer hit the search button bottom right.

Yes that feature sux as it requires 5+ clicks as opposed to dialing it directly....
honestly there are tons of features that are just missing from this phone that I used all the time on my TB...
like a global search button (?!? wtf google) I never use the google search bar... and I wish I could reverse the home / back buttons...and remove altogether the recent apps button (I never use that either).... i guess my only option is a custom rom? any good ones out there that allow this? Or do I have to replace the launcher? I'd rather not do that tho bc i dont want any lag..... thx!
I use exdialer as well. If you're on a custom rom, there's a cm9 dialer that adds this functionality, but it doesn't work on stock roms.
Use the microphone icon on the google search bar on the homepage. "Call Dave on mobile". Works fine for me.

Yea I'm sure it works but I'd rather not announce who im calling to the whole room sometimes... dial by voice has its benefits but its just not for me I guess..

I'm also using exContacts along with Desktop VisualizeR to replace the stock dialer/contacts launch icons. That way it looks stock but opens the extools.

Oh sweet... thanks!
This was actually something that I thought would be included in ICS stock dialer. Really surprised Google hasn't figured this one out yet. Oh well.
As many others have already stated, exDialer is a free app available on the market that satisfies all your smart-dialing needs. There's even a free ICS theme available as well. I truly love this dialer in comparison to the stock ICS dialer, which was lacking so much - which I noticed right away when I got my GNex. All is well now though with exDialer installed.
Texting as well?
A little off topic but today I transferred all my contacts from my Evo3d to my Nexus. This evening I tried to send a text message and thought I could just type the contact's name into the To: field and have the phone pick it up from my contacts list. It didn't happen. Am I missing something?
thx ill check it out
one weird thing that i've noticed is the avatars for my friends in the contact list is super low resolution for some reason... its the contacts that have facebook "linked" to each contact - any idea how to fix this? It should be showing the full resolution of the image not a 120x120 pixelated image.....
also how to search the contact list for duplicates? HTC does this automatically and suggests that contacts be "linked"..... but on the GN, you have to do it contact by contact which is a PITA when you have 400+ contacts..... ideas? Thx everyone for the help!

switch to go sms pro - its much better than the stock app! be sure to disable the notifications of the stock sms app after u install it.
Pure Android Nexus & AOSP Roms don't include the feature the OP is looking for.
Just to answer the OP's question, pure Google Android Nexus phones have never included the feature you are looking for, same goes for most AOSP roms. CM doesn't include it either.
Seems silly, I don't know why, I always dial people by putting in the first few letters of their name also and the number pops up. Wish the pure Nexus line included that.
Is there any way to outfit the Jellybean keyboard with emojis support like on the iPhone? Currently I can only use emojis in SMS and MMS running codename with a quick emoji button enabled.

You'd have to either get a themed keyboard or download a different keyboard from the playstore
If you have the AOKP ROM, in the Messaging App, you can turn on Emoji's and use them just like the iPhone. You can also insert them.

I'm running codename and I have that enabled and have a button on then side to insert without the need to go into the menu. However I'm interested in something that's universal and could be used with any app such as instagram and Facebook.

I dont know any personally, since I dont really use emoticons, but the one that comes to mind is the go keyboard, it has an emoji plugin, which i think should be what you are after
