[Q] Using iphone headsets with the Glacier - myTouch 4G Accessories

I have a set of Ultimate Ears 500vi, with a mic and remote.
Part of the remote works, but no such luck with the mic.
Any ideas on some adapter I might be able to buy to make the mic work?
More importantly, does anyone know WHY the mic on iphone headsets doesn't work with Android devices?
If I can figure out why it doesn't work, I can make a custom PCB to adapt it...

There's something about how the headset is made that dictates whether it will be able to function on some android phones, the OEM headsets have controls, but others don't always work. Try the OEM headset on iphone, if it doesn't work that means the mic/control implementation is different and can't be recognized by certain boards. I was gonna buy some better headphones like beats or maybe sennheisers, but fear the controls won't work.

I am pretty sure the MIC and GRND leads are reversed in the iPhone headsets. Also, Apple uses a chip in the remote to signal the phone; HTC uses resistors of a known value in series across the MIC and GRND leads.
You can disassemble the stock HTC headset and replace the earbuds with a standard 3.5mm jack for alternative headphones.

Everybody looking for good headsets, I strongly advise to try the Logitech Ultimate Ears Superfi 5vi. They're fully compatible with Android and are studio quality. Downloading PowerAmp is a plus.

i'd take a guess and say its just the brand? /: i had sony in ear headphones with a mic that was supposed to be for the iphone that worked on my mytouch 4g, but the sound quality was pretty choppy, dont know whether it was the product itself or if it was a compatibility issue.

I posted a thread about my Jlab headphones. I lost them, so I have tried various others. Schosches didn't work. Skullcandy's seem to be doing well, but aren't as clear and crisp as my Jlabs. I plan on ordering another pair.

Samsung 3.5 mm Premium Stereo Headset Bulk Packaging - Black
These are awesome. I have bought multiple pairs for about $5 on amazon.com. They have and in line mic with controls, soft clear ear buds with extras in different sizes and they hold up well even with being thrown loose into my purse regularly.

For anyone who's curious, my Dr Dre Beats Solo HD work great with PowerAMP as a music player. Unfortunately, the mic doesn't work...so that's a bummer...
I'm using the Panache which is essentially the same phone. Quote disappointed because the mic was working great with the Nexus One. Also works on my cousins GS2...and of course works on iPhones.

[Q] myTouch 4G and 3rd party headsets?

I recently purchased an HTC myTouch 4G but didn't like the headphones that come with the device, although they do work as advertised.
I have, and would rather use, either a pair of philips "actionFit" or "Beats by Dr. Dre". On These the sound works fine, however the microphone will not work with the phone. I don't see any difference between the jack, so can anyone tell me what's going on? Is there any way to get these 3rd party headphones to work with the myTouch 4G?
Me too
I have had a terrible time trying to get a wired headset to work on mytouch 4g. The mic and the controls don't work on the headset. I've tried a bunch including one's that supposedly work, but they don't (bose, diddy beats, plantronics 216,etc). A user in a different forum told me that he use the klipsch s4i's, so I'm going to try those once they arrive in the mail. I have a theory kim yet to try, that if the headset has more than one byron, its not going to work (unless its the one that came with the phone).
I've tried a 3.5mm adapter to 3.5mm adapter, too, and that didn't work either. I've searched all over the net and can't find an answer, but I'm glad to hear someone else is having the same problem! I spoke with t-mobile and they sent me a replacement, but it didn't work either...

Did the S4i's work? I'm dying to get my hands on some of those if the controls and mic work with the mt4g.
Final scoop on mt4g and headphones
Okay, I'm posting this response as a service to all those infuriates out there struggling to find am explanation why we can't use headphones like everybody else. We find this out when its too later to do any refund and we convince ourselves that headphones are not a dealbreaker.
Well, before I got the s4i's, I had pretty strong evidence that all headsets would not work impresa they only had one button (including those that boast several clicks do current things-although it won't on your phone). When the s4i came, the suspicion was confirmed. However, I was very disappointed by sound quality anyways, so not a big loss. I felt like I liked my headphones without controls for sound quality anyways.
So, fellow mt4g users, jets what to do. The best headset with mic (you can still use the button to ffwd and pause) that I've found so far is the jbuds j4m. Very clear highs and mids, with decent bass. Very durable and look cool. Chord is a little long though. Better still is a bluetooth device made by cellular innovations found on amazon for about 30 bucks. Its a bluetooth with music controls that clips on your short or whatever and you can plug ANY of you favorite headphones into and listen to your tunes.
I would have to second the JBuds. I love them. It is best to break them in by using the program on JLabs website, after that they sound even better, especially on the low end. Plus they have a lifetime warranty. Can't beat that.
For what it's worth.... the reason our beloved Mytouch 4g does not completely work with most 3rd party headsets is that the ground and mic pins on the phone are reversed.

Anything we can do to make a current headset work?
FYI the bose mei2 mic doesnt work and only the play/action button on the controls work, not the volume buttons.
I had a pair of skull candy FMJ that did work however I washed and dried them like 4 times and they finally gave out.
Making others work...I second that...

+1 on this. I'm not averse to getting out the soldering iron, if necessary...

I believe only 1 button mic's will work, and you can use any headphone with a mic adapter.
Search amazon for "Headset Hands Free 3.5mm Adapter + Microphone" should give you a few options to choose from.
I Know that any of the Eelectronics options do work and the button and mic also work. but, they are very bass heavy so if your not a basshead, it may not be the best option. If you love your bass the M6 has the best sound (IMO) and if you don't like wearing an over the ear model the M9 is a very close 2nd.
I am planning to try Etymotic HF2's next, hope they work.

Hi there,
What is the advantage of using this "Headset Hands Free 3.5mm Adapter + Microphone"?
Thanks,
M
"Beats By Dr. Dre" headphones are extremely overpriced for what they are, for the same price you could buy a pair of higher quality (perhaps two) headphones such as the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s. Bose, skull candy, and virtually all other mass-marketed products of that nature are the same way (overpriced).
This is an old thread but I thought I'd just throw this out there for others who might stumble upon it later

headphone audio gain

Hi guys
I would know if there is solution for boost the audio with headphone connected at the phone
thanks
To me this is a major flaw of the defy so far. I can hardly listen to my music when I am walking outside and I really don't understand why the volume is so weak when using the headphone
get better headphones?
Hi, I'm using the Sennheiser CX 200 Street II (excellent price for the quality) and I never use more than half of the volume. So, good inear pieces (those with rubber tips) might help
PS: Please don't tell me you're using the stock headset! They might work for one or two calls but not for enjoying music.
PPS: Does anyone know a compatible headset adapter? I mean one with a built-in mic that allows you to use your own headphones without the need of a soldering iron
As far as I noticed with my girlfriend's ipod touch, she can use my headphones to make skype calls. I can only suspect that they work the other way around. (her headphones are far but I might use someone elses iphone headphones tomorrow)

The iPod/iPhone Headset works, as I read several times. Unfortunately, you can't use your own headphones with that headset. Know what I mean? I'm looking for something that provides a mic and a 3,5mm jack for headphones
€: Finally, found what I was looking for: http://cgi.ebay.de/e12i-Stereo-Head...812849?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f064f7f31 I hope the quality is not so poor.
I use the music app Poweramp. Apart from being the most comprehensive music app there is, it also has a built in software amplifier to boost volume. I highly recommend it, definitley an app worth paying for.

One of these days (I'll have to go buy a 3.5mm socket) I'm planning to give an old Nokia 3.5mm set of headphones a new life. I only have to study how the mic/button work (might be some different resistors involved).
I'll get back with a how to after I'm done.
Anyone try the ZaggSmartbuds for www.zagg.com they have a 3.5mm jack, inline mic, inline volume control(analog). i normally use my SD9-HD bluetooth headset when listening to music but sometimes I prefered to be wired. Have been considering the Zaggs real hard.
But exist some head phone with mic and noise reduction function all in one?
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Well... the ZAGGsmartbuds, the iPhone inears, the bose headset, the V-Moda Vibe
II w/mic...
I have found this
http://cgi.ebay.it/ZAGG-SMARTBUDS-N...UK_Mobiles_Accessories_RL&hash=item5d2d8b12e4
but I have read in the footer ad there is wrote this:
"Some non-US smartphones, such as the Samsung i9000, have a unique jack configuration that requires an adapter for use with the ZAGGsmartbuds."
So, for My Motorola Defy (France) could be some problem with this headphone??
thank's guys
We might have a different cable configuration at the jack, but we'll never know, if no one tries
PS: I'll tell you if the headset adapter that I ordered via eBay works for the european Defy and how it works.
I was more thinking of some kind of software solution to amplify/unlock the Defy's volume (I guess it is limited for health reasons).
The ones I found on the market just don't work.
I do not intend to buy a new headset as I use it 5-10 minutes a day at most.
Try the poweramp music player. It offers a graphic equalizer and the opportunity to amplify the volume. Remember: too much amplification results in bad sound.

quality headsets with microphone

I looking to buy a quality headsets with microphone that will be compatible with my Galaxy S2.
I am thinking to buy the Zagg smurtbuds.
Do you know if they will work with the Galaxy S2? will the sound be good? the microphone will work? the controller will work with the Galaxy S2 player?
If this headsets are not compatible with the Galaxy S2, do you know about other alternatives?
Thanks!

Could you please elaborate. I'm pretty new to this so I apologize.
How would this work? Through bluetooth? RF signal?
Haven't bought any of the brands above so am not sure.
Also what kind of adapter with remote do I need to buy? (Name?)
Any links if possible would be great for both.
Thanks in advance!

Get a SonyEricsson MW600 bluetooth adaptor and plug any headphone you want in. It has Play, Pause, Back, Forward, Volume buttons and microphone. Problem solved.
Thanks for the quick response - will check them out. Which earphone would you say is the best on audio quality for listening to music (as well as using it for handsfree)?

The problem with Bluetooth remote's is that the audio stream get's compressed, so that kinda defeats the purpose of getting high end ear/headphones. As technology stands today, wired is the only way to go for achieving the best sound quality.
I suppose the real question is this:
For ear/headphone microphone sets that we know work with the SGS2 (such as the one that came in the box) which have four connectors, I suppose the next thing to try is to see whether or not ear/headphones designed for iPhones will work correctly. If iPhone designed headphones work properly (including all controls etc.) then this makes finding a decent pair of working earphones a HELL of a lot easier.
I think that the headsets that comes with the device are quality, dont you think so ?
yesterday i bought the "Bose MIE2" and they are just great.
link for the international site
there are not many controls. just one button that lets you pick up/hang up calls and play/pause/skip music. thats more than enough for me.
the sound is so great but the best thing is the design of the speakers itself.
there is something called "Stay here" attached to them, which makes it almost impossible for them to drop out of your ear.
this works so well that i am even considering to use them for sports too...
unfortunately they cost about 130€ which is a lot. but for me the quality makes it worth it!
So far i'm enjoying the phonak pfe122 on my S2. Sound level seems to have improved possibly due to better isolation and clarity is second to none
I haven't had the opportunity to try out as many earbuds as this guy but his opinion in iem/earbuds is very similar to mine
http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showpost.php?p=128853&postcount=1
I've bought A-Jays Four and for the price range they just sound amazing. As for inline remote, only middle button works, but thats enough in my case.
jays.se/products/earphones/a-jays-four.html
I recommend atomic floyd, a great product and exemplary customer service.

The MIE2I's are excellent imho, but like most others the volume buttons don't work with the SGS2.
Headset button controller app is workable and for me worth the hassle to use these headphones.
Mic works well. No one has complained about the quality when I call them.
Totally agree with nimroth. Very few earphones will stay in my weird ears, but these are perfect.

i meant a wired adapter not a bluetooth one, bluetooth is not reccomended for high end headphones especially because flac and uncompressed formats are of a way to high bitrate to stream correctly
if i meant bluetooth i would've said so , i haven't tested any with my sgs as i dont have access to any atm but what i would do is find the cheapest possible headphones with remotes that work maybe even old htc ones or something laying around, then cut off the headphones above the mic/remote section and attach a 3.5mm jack so i can use my Q-jays
least that is my plan.
the loss of quality from the extension will be negligible and either way the sound out of any phone cannot compete with high end audio device anyway, so if you really care about audio quality start carrying a Cowon player.

just for you in case you didnt know: there are two different models:
- the "mie2" only have the mike and ONE button for pause/play/skip/accept or end call (those are the ones i have)
- the "mie2i" are the ones for the iphone and have more buttons (like volume and stuff)
just like MarkyH said the mike-quality is really good (maybe because it is quite next to your mouth), but the volume controls wont work with the sgs2 and most other phones because of a different framework.
i decided to buy the mie2 because i dont mind the missing volume controls or the "one track back" button...
Thank you Nimroth and Also thanks to MarkyH..
Good to know that the headset mie2i works well i.e compatible with SGS2 except for the volume controller.
I've already one and I going to get SGS2 soon.
does the fm radio still work with the mie2i?

Same problem. It seems that headphones with the 3 button apple control do not work (mic + buttons except for the center button sometimes) and they don't even allow the phone's microphone to work while plugged in. I have used apple headphones and klipsch image s4i's.
The center button works fine for me. It's the only one that does. Using CM9, not sure if that makes any difference.

I had the intention of picking up the klipsch s4i when i was in bestbuy. The one i never go to happened to have the s4a which i did not know about. I've only had them a few hours but the main issue is finding a working remote, install the klipsch app and you can customize what the buttons do! Amazing headphones once again from klipsch, worth every bit of $45 premium sound and a android compatible remote with mic. I highly recommend them.

Thanks for replying. Well you say that any headphones should work on any device but the headphones that came with my old Samsung Galaxy S and before that the pair from my Sony Ericsson Xperia X1 certainly do not work properly on my Galaxy S3 or my Nexus 5. It's like those headphones were based on a different standard - same jack, different output. That's why I asked.

All 3.5mm sound peripherals are standardized but there could be some alternate function that interferes with the phone's operation if it has inline controls. If it has a mic that should be pretty standard as well.
Most 2.5mm and 3.5mm mobile audio now used TRRS where ring 3 is used for ground and sleeve is mic - standards (CTIA/AHJ) that are good for Apple, HTC, Sony & most Android devices. Some might be wired with ring 3 for mic and sleeve is for ground instead. If you come across it, you can get an inexpensive adapter on eBay to reverse/conver it.
The left & right audio channel are the same, however - so for listening purposes, they all should work ... :fingers-crossed:
I have not received any headset with the N5...but I would like to buy one motorola bluetooth headsets for my N5 as I just used of one of my friend and I really like them...so wondering to go for them....
N5 does not come with nor ship with any headset.
Standard & popular bluetooth headset are fine, I've both Motorola & Jabra BT headset setup for use with it, recognized it & did not even ask for a PIN - but I did change the device name to something more unique so that other BT headsets nearby won't connect to it by "accident" although I usually turn it off unless I'm on the move.
