[Q] Safe to install OTA after root? - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I'm new to the DHD, (I had experience with my LG GT540)
I have followed root and s-off guides, gold card, radio etc, but now I want to know is it safe to update to the newest OTA without losing root permissions. If not I will just install sense 3.0 or miui or something. Thanks for understanding and helping, (I did try to search first but nothing came up) Quinny898

If you install an OTA update, you will lose root permissions...
So don't install an OTA update...

I have been lurking around for quiet some time and I can't figure out which is the latest and best method for rooting? I am currently using desire z with latest 1.82 firmware. I new to android and rooting. So i decided to ask before i make mistake and brick my phone. From what i have read there are 2 methods:
1. Downgrade to 1.34 and root it.
2. From wiki(not sure if this will work for 1.82 firmware i have)
Appreciate the help.. thanks..

You need to downgrade to 1.34 if you are on 1.82 in order to root, and yes the downgrade process for 1.72 also works for the 1.82 rom.

[Q] Installing OTA when root

Is it okay to install official OTA if S-OFF with Alpharev HBoot?
NEVER INSTALL OTA UPDATES ON ROOTED PHONES.

Answered at least a million times.
It doesn't work no matter what you try. My Desire's now back to factory default because I sent it off to be factory reflashed after rooting it and finding no way to install the latest OTA update.
All the threads with people having issues after doing it says something different. Also a Ruu should have worked fine to get latest official rom. Which is the way to go if you don't want a custom rom but do want the latest OTA update.

New ota; safe to update?

I have a rooted htc desire, with stock rom, but with clockworkmod. Today, I received a notification that a new ota update is out. I understand that I will lose my root, but is it safe to update through ota? Will it replace the custom recovery?
I already have problems with cwm. It doesn't work... it says that it can't mount cache, and I can't flash anything with it, nor make a factory data reset.
Is there a risk my phone will get bricked?
I really want this 3.0 update.
So...is it safe to update?

Download the update first. Before installing it, upload it here and let's have a look at it. Btw, its highly unlikely that the update is 3.0

Tell me if the download works.
And I was talking about the new Htc sense 3.0. Did you see how cool ot looks? XD

Thanks. I'm taking a look and will try to get you a flashable zip for rooted phones tomorrow. Can you upload your system/build.prop after renaming it to system/build.prop.txt ?
This is the build.prop.txt

This is a rooted OTA update for 2.29.405.5 which upgrades it to 2.29.405.14. To be applied by people who've rooted their phones, but havent applied any custom rom. It's a collection of binary patches for 2.29.405.5 firmware. Applying it should be safe in the sense that it shouldnt disturb your recovery/kernel.
This has not been tested on my phone, and hence is an alpha at the moment. Follow usual precautions like taking Nandroid backup before applying.

Thanks, anything juicy in that OTA?
No way to know unless someone installs it and sees. There should have been been a description in the original OTA notice.

[Q] Can i update with root?

Hi. Quick question, if i just root my phone (and don't use any other roms etc) then can i still receive the updates from HTC Or carrier?
Thanks
From what I understand as long as your using stock rom you will still get the updates but you will lose root
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using Tapatalk
You still can. If you get superSU premium there is an option to try to keep root after an ota. I would try that if you would like to keep root.

[Q] Which ROM have an option to HTC update..?

Hi everyone, can any one answer my question ...!
Which ROM it have an option to HTC update..?
and
what I will get & what I will loose after update ..?
Thanks..
Question 1: the only Rom I can think of is the stock Rom.
Question 2: well you loose root and the ability to root until a new exploit is found. But I think you can still root if you are S-OFF.

but for for the answer of the 1st question I remember some custom have option for checking the official update from HTC. but witch ROM
I have no idea as I haven't been on a Rom where you can
Sent from my Desire HD using xda premium
I would suggest not to go for those ROMs
Hi,
I don't know where there are any ROMs that let you do that. I would advise that even if you get such a ROM, not to go for the OTA updates, as there are a lot of problems associated with it, including losing root on your device.
No custom rom will be able to update from HTC. While it will check and attempt to download and install it ends up soft bricking your device. If you want HTC updates then stay stock.
