you don't need to if that's what you're asking.

busybox is a unix toolkit. If you don't know if you need it, you probably don't, lol.

It wouldn't hurt to get it, the downloader is free on the market, and there are a few root apps that need it to run. So no, you don't need it, but there really isn't a good reason not to have it. Also, most roms have it built in.

[Q] How many use Rom Manager

Just curious because I don't. I just really don't have a use for it. I do everything manually or through adb. At times, It seems more work than doing it manually.
I do. I am selective with what I use it for, but I do use it.
Absolutely not just my preference
Sent from my Incredible 2 3D using xda premium
I use it sometimes. I prefer to use CWM cuz I like to wipe myself instead of automating it.
Sent from my rooted, MiUi/Go Launcher EX combo.
I use RM mostly to flash little zip files. Touch install ROM from SD card, select the zip you wanna flash, and don't wipe anything.
Way easier than going into recovery to flash a zip.
I've been checking out lots of custom lock rings lately...

I use it to make and manage my backups.
Sent from my ADR6350 using Tapatalk
Okay, I was just curious because I'm thinking about giving my nephew that option. However, I don't want their to be any issues. He has a droid incredible 2 that a fixed. LOL.
When I try to use ROM manager it says I need to install CWM, but it already is, will it break anything if I let it install over it?
Sent from my ADR6350 using xda premium
Nope. Rom manager likes to keep cwm current also.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using Tapatalk
The only thing I use ROM Manager for is making nandroid backups, because I like to give my backups descriptive names (usually including ROM and kernel names) in addition to the date and time. AFAIK you can't give backups customized names in clockworkmod.

Couldn't you just rename a nandroid with astro or something?

Sure, but why would you do that knowing RM let's you name the backup?

Because then you wouldn't have to use Rom Manager

you'd have to edit the name in the md5sum file as well I do believe.

No , it will not break anything , and there is an option to override that request ( some times don't work ) . usually that request comes on first use of Rom manager

As i remember Rom manager name a backup without spaces . if you named it wrong . Rom Manager will not be able to use that backup .
Personally, I think RM is a very valuable tool. For backups, installing certain zips, and quick access to see what some of the latest roms and nightlies are up to.

i guess its just preference, but i prefer to do everything via recovery. That way i have total control. Its great that so many people love ROM manager, but i guess i'm just old school.

Ya, it seems pretty complicated. I've always had someone else root it then I do all the rom business. Is it as hard as it sounds?

Total noob question. I went through all the steps and it looks like it everything went well. But how do I know if i'm rooted? On my nexus one,I get a big unlock symbol, but on the s2 everything boots up the same.

Root without a computer?

I know it's possible to root *some* phones without a computer. Does anyone know if it's possible with the Hercules?
No! You need a computer
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk
Wow...... well I guess that answers that one.
lol
Thanks
I think you can not root without a computer (because of all the ODIN stuff), but I guess ROMs can be installed using ROM manager. But using clockworkmod recovery seems easier.
You can't root without PC. Odin is the only way, my adhd girl can do this!

trolling?? or... just plain... nevermind
Rooting without a computer is the DUMBEST idea in the entire world. IF you screw up your phone, like most n00bs these days do, you will have NO WAY to recover your device without sending it in... not to mention no way to read XDA to discover what went wrong.

Rooting is not the part you need a computer for..
You need a computer in order to install cwm so you can flash the superuser zip

No need to install CWM from PC.
For this method you have to download 2 files (CWM.zip & SU-Busybox-Installer.zip) to you phone and you are ready to go.
Check method 1 on this thread -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794

This is to give root access, but to gain the abilty to flash SU to gain root access, you need ODIN and a PC. On the T989, it the only way to flash CWM. To summarize, SU is the saddle, but whats really important is the horse, CWM

Yeah thats right, even you can get a horse without PC. There is app called mobile odin which makes this possible. You can flash firmware with cwm using that, mobile odin requires rooted phone, which we did using prev posts.
I have su access with cwm installed on my phone without imcrease in flash counter and yellow exclaimation at boot.
I am planning to install good rom on this. Once I do it successfully I will try to put small tut on it.

Isn't half the point of the ROM Manager app to install a custom recovery? If you have root access, you can flash CWM through it. It's literally the first action listed when you open it.

Yes, you can install Goo and yes it will download the current version of TWRP but touch is still flaky. I changed to CWM until TWRP is adapted to the Note 8.
Is there a legitimate reason to have a recovery right now? With what is currently available to root users as far as roms and what not I just havent seen a reason to install one yet. Plus I tried TWRP a week or so ago using goomanager and it fails to install the script.

Thats what I'm thinking at the moment. I wish to root as the tools i like to use require it (FolderMount and SetCPU), but none of the Kernels or ROMS are mature enough for me to flash and while I'd like to support testing them, I will be using the device as my diary, calendar, organiser, sketchbook and note pad, and I dont want to jeopodise my ability to use it with an unstable build.

Is there an update.zip?

Is there an update.zip I can use to root my phone from stock recovery? Iv had my phone for 3 weeks, and havent been able to sit still enough to root it with the computer. I know that it has been asked if you can root without computer and the answer was no. Was just curious if it was possible for someone to make an update.zip for people like me

Using an update.zip to flash in recovery would almost be like rooting without a computer.... wouldn't it?
Yes, it would be rooting without a computer. But im wanting to know if someone is able to make one? Or is it not possible?
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
the update.zip would need to be signed by Samsung to be flashed through the stock recovery...
Will never happen...
Sorry about that but you need a computer in order to root.. unless an app exists if their is a vulnerability in the stock rom.
