If u mean about the official updates, that is possible, as gingerbread should be the final android version that htc gave us..maybe some minor security fix later eventually..but we will still have cm and miui that will give us the latest android version available of course
Well minor GB updates should be possible. I mean, it's not like complete overhaul like 2.2 -> 2.3 was.

i don't know about minor updates..because they didn't release the ota for all user (and they will not do that in future), its only an ruu for devs..
I doubt any updates will come our way. That would really be too much to ask. I think that Desire will be discontinued soon enough anyway.
When i wanted to buy my Desire, Vodafone Romania was out of stock. When asked when will a new shipment arrive, they've told me that the device is listed as End Of Life and no new ones will be brought. They have since removed it from their website/on-line market.
IMO, there will be no further updates for the Desire, either OTA or RUU.
Yea sad but true. A more than 1,5 year old phone is around EOL. Htc need their customers to move on to newer more profitable phones.
edit: also just checked. Almost any store i can think of have taken it off their product list.
Yep it has been discontinued.
Its on the HTC website. I doubt they would remove it off that.

no, the solution is cm and miui...they will give us the latest android version available untill the hardware can support it..so maybe more than 1 year at least (android 2.5?)
As long as the Nexus One gets new updates, be it Ice-Cream sandwhich or even the next Android iteration that comes after it, I'm sure the dev's will continue to cook us new roms up to a point where it is no longer possible.

I am a noob to these forums and this seemed the best place to ask considering it is a Q&A forum. Considering the G2 is a stock android device how hard would it be to make a stock gingerbread ROM for it? Are any devs out there working on it? Is teamdouche working on CM v7 based on 2.3? I have been looking around for any inclination of this but have seen none whilst other devices get gingerbread ported over/compiled for them. Just want to know the status (or hopefully an ETA) on a Gingerbread ROM for the G2. If I posted this in the wrong place or this has been posted before my apologies.

I don't know if it's out yet, mang... but I'm sure that once it is, it'll be a hot commodity. The modding community is absolutely amazing and I think they seriously need to be hired by some of the mobile companies out there. Their work is fantastic.
well nobody can make a rom or anything until the source code is released...and that hasnt happend yet. as soon as the nexus s comes out (which is this week) then the source code will be extracted from gingerbread and itll be able to be used. right now we just had a SDK file, and that really isnt used for anything but looks. mainly used for themes and such.
Then why does the EVO have a full working ROM for gingerbread? I believe the DESIRE and the HD2 also have it going.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
There isn't a working gingerbread ROM for the EVO, it's just FroYo with some parts ripped from 2.3. Gingerbread will be released in a couple of days along with the Nexus S, after which the AOSP will be ported to existing devices - but it'll still be a few days, if not weeks until something stable comes out.
I wouldn't hold my breath for it.
My apologies for my ignorance. I thought they were actual 2.3 builds considering the XDA posted list says "devices running gingerbread". So absolutly nothing can happen with gingerbread until a device with gingerbread (nexus S) comes out?

Not a problem, you were just asking
All we have running Gingerbread right now is the android emulator, from which we can pull apk's and libs, but most of them need tweaking to get them to work on FroYo. Plus I don't know if the market works on Gingerbread.

Is that an actual statement from teamdouche/cyanogen or just from studying release behavior in the past? When you say release you mean T-mo pushes it as an OTA correct, I know someone on here will "release" 2.3 long before T-mo stamps it for approval.

So at the moment there is no actual gingerbread (save for the reveiw models floating around phonedog, mobileburn, etc are unboxing) out just froyo with the modified characteristics of gingerbread? Pardon the question if it seems silly, most of the comment went over my head.

I'll bet we have a ported ROM before New Years, usually a huge release like this gets all the attention of the devs. Especially since with perm-root, s-off and several stable 2.2 ROMs, the devs don't have all that much to work on atm.
Team Villain were working on one, but it became clear that there was going to be no way to make Audio work until AOSP is out so its on hold until then.
and without audio a phone is useless, no ringing, no sound in calls, no music etc etc

Highly doubt that's true. I came from a CDMA Hero running CM6 RC1 (Froyo) and as most of us know, the lower end devices (such as the Hero), never got an official 2.2, yet there was a fully functional, highly stable CM6 out for it.
Which ran magnificently BTW.
Ah yeah, those seem to be more like proof of concept. Once a retail version of handsets start coming out with Gingerbread, as well as the source code, I imagine we'll start seeing custom ROMs based off it.

I'm hearing of some unbranded UK Desires receiving an OTA update to Gingerbread, has anyone else seen this? Nothing on mine yet, and since it's unbranded I imagine it's not a staggered rollout.
Anyone know what's going on, or are my sources false?
I've not heard anything to maybe a fail. I guess if you find HTC's RUU then it will be rolling out soon. About now is when it's rolling out so maybe so.
Well after some checking I can confirm that a desire, possibly on TMob got a system update a couple days ago, but can't confirm whether it was 2.3 or just a pre update of some sort, also not sure if the desire is branded or not.
unfortunately the phone is a work phone that my friend doesn't have currently so can't get any more details at this moment.

HTC Official Update
I received the following email today from HTC Customer Care in response to a question as to when they will fix the widely reported Google leak (potential security flaw in Android).
In regards to your last response, in order to to get the security update when it is being issued, you have to have a base of the 2.3 Gingerbread update on your handset, in which case will be released this summer for devices such as HTC Desire.
Currently we do not have a specific date as to when the 2.3 will be released for other handsets as at this time the update is only being issued to HTC Desire HD and HTC Incredible S.

Check my sig. I can't say I noticed something actually does not work, which I can say for some other roms people swore are rock stable, but it drains battery and there is obvious lag especially with alternative launchers and animations. That said, I can cope with some lag, but I can't cope with memory leaks, bootloops, ads etc.
So you can't just yet say it is as it is meant to be, but it comes to that this actually works. Not extra smooth, but it does.

Officially, no, but trough xda developers, yes
Desire HD is more than capable. the problem is with HTC. Somehow i doubt that we will get the official ICS.
What's good about android is that we get to have independent developers developing roms for us so I'm pretty sure we will get an early port for our device once the sources comes out.
Google should start releasing sources now!!!
I think this update will be the reason i finally root my DHD. ICS looks awsome. I'm currently just using the GO Launcher with a honeycomb theme and that looks and feels a damn site better than Sense
no official news by now.

I hope it will come soon officially. I really love HTC and their work but if they keep ignoring previous models to sell the new ones, I will definetely change to samsung or sth else. Making you do things which only they allow is one of the reasons I hate about Apple, which even they are upgrading their previous devices, HTC is acting even worse. I already feel extremely disappointed about Sense 3.0 or 3.5 not coming to DHD officially, that would be too much.

Huh?
It will be great if Desire receives ICS but I doubt because of marketing reasons. The guys from HTC want to sell their new phones to old customers as well as new ones so the old Desire won't get an ICS update, as it didn't get an Gingerbread one (with new Sense).
Desire isn't a recent device anymore

Yeah, but I think there's a bit of good will at stake too. Many people are on contract with months left and aren't willing to shell fora new device just yet.
If HTC nurture the customers that have had a good experience with the desire (I'm one of them) perhaps they won't be lured off to samsung, motorolla, lg, huwai, nokia etc come end of contract.
I reckon if they could do it with sense they would.

Desire was never a recent device in the first place.
If HTC could release ICS loaded with their sense experience, while leaving room in the rom for carrier apps they would. Perhaps it's naive of me, but there you have it.
Problem isn't the age, or the cpu, or even wanting to force you into a newer phone. It's the limited memory with which to drive a relatively high pixel count on the screen and a version of software that probably wasn't even dreamt of when the desire was getting her specs.
The development community will possibly be able to shoehorn ICS on, without sense, but htc is saying they don't have time to bother with that level of customisation for an older device. If it were simple they'd do it.

HTC's making money out of selling phones. The End.
Not from supporting new shinny flagship os's for "Mezozoic" phones.
Look at Apple, they support almost all new os's for deprecated phones but with small feature set and performance penalty.
Is that what you want?
