Ok, so I've been a lurker on the forums for quite some time, but I finally have a problem that I felt warranted a new thread, as the only threads I've found upon doing a search are pretty old and not specifically relevant to the issue I'm having.
I recently updated to 2.2 with the official OTA (the .6 firmware, not the early .3 leak) and basically ever since I've had no problems short of a universally ABYSMAL 3G connection. The phone stays connected, and I can browse the web, etc. but I'm getting speeds of about 7k down. Yes, 7. Not 70, not 700, 7.
I've tried testing both in the admittedly buggy speedtest.net app, which actually reported a much higher upload speed than download, and then again with mobilespeedtest.com just to be sure it wasn't an error within the speedtest app. My 3G speeds are so incredibly bad that my NPR app won't function at all. Youtube videos buffer for minutes on end even at low quality, even Google takes about 30 seconds to load. I've tried restarting the phone, I've updated the PRL, I've used the network app to make sure my PRL was set to CDMA Auto (it was)... I'm at my wits end and considering a hard reset. Before I do that though I was just wondering if anyone out there has been experiencing the same problems.
Any magic tricks out there? Am I all alone in this one? >.>;
Sounds like a rare case of your radio being internally damaged from flashing corruption. I'd take it to a Sprint store and they should replace it for you for free.
Good luck
Can you download the OTA manually and attempt to reflash it?
I was having the same problem. It started with the RC1 ROM, then I flashed to the new Fresh 3.1 Rom. Nothing I did helped then I found a page that had all the old radios. So I flashed a few radios back from when I had better service. Maybe you can try to flash a different radio. So far it had been pretty good for me. I didn't flash the Wimax, just try the radio.
Heres the page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485&highlight=downgrade+radio
I used to have cm6. When rc1 came out I had a lot of issues. Generally I liked cm6 and still recommend it. It was fast and my videos played flawlessly. I wanted 4g on my phone so I devise to switch roms. I tried a few different roms and they were great except one problem. My video were really laggy. Right now I am using Myn's Warm RLS 3 Rom and netarchy' recent stable cfs kernel also the most recent Wimax radio.
When I watch videos on rockplayer the videos are baggy like low fps. Also when I use ATK in cm6 it says i have 400M available even when u have 4 apps running but on these other roms I'm only getting 200-150M when having nothing running.
Also on all the roms I try I when I turn 4g on all it says is scanning. I live in Boston. Shouldn't there be 4g available? I upgraded to the newest wimax radio and its drill not connecting. Please help.

The video lag has been complained about a few times. The solution is cm6 or nothing, I think. You were getting much higher than you are now because htc sense, which is completely nonexistent in cm6, takes up a huge amount of memory. That is why a bunch of people don't like it. I personally love sense widgets, but hate the rest. The 4g issue: 4g is like AT&T service, spotty and incomplete. Bars can vary greatly by feet, and the 4g area is highly undeveloped. Try different areas where you know there is 4g. Or flash back to stock (or go extreme and unroot) and then try it. Good luck
Dk
I have experienced this on two Evo phones. Both versions of Fresh lose net connection after maybe 5 minutes of use. I have tried various radios to no effect. I assume there is an easy fix which I have overlooked - but someone please help me.
DUDE!...I thought I was the only one having this issue...I only noticed it recently, internet (3G and 4G in my case, not WiFi) just drops, then comes back after trying to load a page a few times.
This is really a show stopper for this ROM. But it seems not to be too wide spread, as I have only seen it mentioned a couple times before, with no solution found...
I had the same issue, so switched back to cyanogenmod
This morning I installed the Sprint Lovers ROM and it is great so far. Smoother than Fresh, no glitchy internet (Pandora does not stall now!), and super battery life. It is based on the latest ota, and I recommend giving it a shot. It is easily better than Fresh, IMO.

i have sense on my evo again because everywhere i went no matter my signal, the bars on cm6 showed 1-2 rarely 3 never 4 and the 3G was painfully slow. ran tests and i got .1 mbps on cm6, flashed sense to see if my phone was the problem and it got 1mbps, ten times faster? can anyone explain the potential problem here? its killing me cuz i love aosp but the 3G is killin me
Always had the same issue here. One of the reasons I stay on a sense based rom.

And just a suggestion, install a senseless ROM... Built off sense but has sense removed... Will be the closest thing to AOSP but will keep your speeds and 4g working.
The signle meter on CM6 only has 4 bars, the Sense one has like 8. You are getting the same coverage.
Secondly, wrong forum. This is development.
Third. I have slow 3G on CM6 roms too. I have no idea why, and everyone else will tell you it's Sprint. But I can be in the same place, and run speedtests and Sense based ROMs are always faster.
Thread moved to Q&A.
Yup. Sense will always have better 3G signal. Sometimes when I am on CM the signal even drops down to 1x.
Thats irrelevant .. he also posted the speeds he was getting. OP, I don't know what's wrong; doesn't happen to me. Is it on all aosp roms? Try messing round with the settings
A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on the IPhone. We now have the Htc Evo.
oops i thought i posted in q&a, my bad.
and i understand the whole bar ratio but on sense i get like 7 bars out of 8 rather than 1 out of 4. seriously it is almost ALWAYS 1 bar and it drops to 1x a lot! its never faster than about 125kb/s on a speedtest no matter where i am. its almost like theres a governor bogging it down
ALSO: ive flashed gingerbread roms galore, all the same issue.
On a AOSP rom the 4 bars are the 4 low bars outta the 6 in sense, so if u see only two bars then ur short 4 which gives u horrible battery. Also kernels play the biggest role in data if u want to believe it or not...

I had the same problem until I flashed a Sense rom, re-flashed the newest radio after first boot. Updated the profile then restarted the phone. I then could flash any AOSP rom with no speed problems. But every time i go back to a sense rom I must do that again if I want to go back to AOSP...
I don't know if it will work for you, but it did for me...

thanks. i will try that right now actually.
Home>Menu>Settings>Wireless & networks>Mobile networks
Make sure "Data enabled", "International data roaming", and "National data roaming" are checked, and "System select" is on Automatic.
And before you freak out, all of the EVO plans on Sprint have unlimited roaming.

hahahahaaha thanks i already know all that. and yes its all checked.
well it seems that the radio flash and updating the profile worked some magic. speeds are up above 700kbps
EDIT: nope. back to horrible speeds jk
can i get some feedback from more CM users please? this is so confusing
I had the same problem on cm6. Still don't understand why but I'm sticking with a sense rom. I get the best results on myns roms. Fresh was almost just as bad as cm6 as far as speeds go. Kinda weird imo. Maybe someone can explain?

If I had to guess, its due to the fact most sense based roms have the carrier spyware built in. (ksoftiq I think is the process name)
But, thats just a guess, I'm probably wrong.
I have the same issue with cm6 and the latest gb asop roms. Not with the display of the bars, but on asop roms only at my work I will bounce between 1x and 3g. I will lose data, then go to 1x, then back to 3g constantly. When holding, the signal isnt too bad, but it is almost as if the phone cannot pick between towers or something. I have tried multiple radio/pri combos and such and have no solution. Also tired switching back to sense and updated profile and prl.
Edit: Could it also be location based? This only happens at work in Burbank, CA. Just about everywhere else I am around LA I do not have this problem.
I suffered from this on cm. On gb I get great speeds for a while then it will act crazy and get slow. I reboot and it goes back to being fast again.

if u ever notice some of those extra processes running in the background of sense like IQRD or IQ agent for example... i believe some of those are qualcomm based programs that help ensure good data transfer speeds. And it's funny that we all hated sense because of those extra background processes that seem to slow the whole system down but some of them are actually helping to keep data speeds up in sense roms. Obviously in AOSP those processes are not present therefore speeds arent always as reliable and may drop in and out. Im just speculating on this and have no concrete proof but i did read up on one of the processes and it points to qualcomm's cdma based technology development so im assuming there is a correlation.
Hey guys my 3g is not as fast anymore after constant flashing of roms and radios and now I never get over 500kbps..any suggestions?
I've been having the same problem! I seen somewhere about reconnecting your phone with Sprint towers, but can't find the post about it again anywhere.
Did yall try updating your profile?

Ive updated my radios, prl, profile..and I always do complete wipes and wipe multiple times before I install a rom..also I tried that data govenor removal mod and still nothing..i really dont want to unroot and bring to sprint to replace
Sorry but thats all i got. Ive noticed sometimes i get bad reception but i havnt up dated my radios since fresh 3.4 came out. Ive been running cm for a long time so that might be it but its not enough to make me flash back to sense to fix it. I hope you get everything figured out.

Hey no problem man I appreciated the help..I guess my next move will be to flash fresh Rom..the speed seems to come and go on myns rls 5 but on any other Rom speed is completely horrible but let's see..ill get back with results.
I've been having the same issues. I've noticed when running the speedtest app sometimes it detects the closest server being over in Europe (I'm from Wisconsin). It appears to be tower related. When I'm on the tower closest to my house it detects the closest location in Missouri? Awkward. I'm on CM 6.1.2 running snap 7.6 with turbo enabled. Most times I see speeds of .3 mbit. Turn on wifi and I instantly max out my connection at 8 mbit. If only 3g were that fast, lol.
