Guys I have an r800a xperia play version 2.32 rooted with Ginger break. what are my options for upgrading to a later version? last time I checked into this I heard you could not keep root access with 2.33. also I have removed many stock apps and gamez from the phone and I heard that you can't update without all these things on the phone. I am in Canada and have the Rogers play.

Hi guys im a complete noob to all of this mobile rooting so ive got alot of questions and as all the other threads i read make no sense to me i thought i would just create a new 1 so here goes.
I got a new xperia play r800i on tmobile it currently has android 2.3.2 and build version 3.0.A.2.184, i wanted to update to the new version to get the new features like xloud, themes etc but after 4 days of arguing between tmobile and sonyericsson tmobile have now said the update is not available so i have decided to just look at debranding or rooting the handset ( not sure what ones what or if there the same )
i have looked at so many different websites so many posts and a failed attempt at using the davinciteam option thanks to paypal not letting me pay, ive come to the conclusion i have no idea what todo or who to ask. can somebody give me a simple way of getting this fone debranded so i can update to the 4.0.A.2.368 to get the new features and remove the stuff tmobile put on there. i see something about gingerbreak but when i start reading about it i just get confused and frustrated.can somebody seriously help me here.
Go to wotanserver.com. Register for a new account (its free). Download the drivers and client software. Install drivers and open wontanserver software. Sign in and follow directions. Choose r800i 2.3.2 (3.0.a.??184 or something). Now download gingerbreak. 1.2( search forum or google) to your computer and unzip. Now connect phone to computer and drag gingerbreak to xperia play storage. On phone go to market and download and install "explorer". Open explorer and find sdcard/gingerbreak.apk and click on it. Now install and open. In gingerbreak press root and wait 5-10 mins until it reboots. Now go to settings/phone/system update. Only update Over-The-Air or else you'll lose root with pc companion/se updater. Enjoy your rooted r800i 2.3.3
P.S. Dont remove system apps unless you aren't going to update again 2.3.4. Use titanium to backup/ freeze apps you dont want to see in phone. Beware of what apps to do this to.

With reflashing there is the obvious risks involved what would you say the success rate is and simplicity todo this the way you have explained to me and would this effect future official updates. Sorry to be a pain but you can understand my precautions I hope. Thanks again.

100% success rate. To do official updates. Unfreeze or restore system apps with titanium backup and update ota only. You'll keep root and have the latest firmware

Hi guys I am a newbie here and need some help I have read through a few posts and still don't fully understand things to my specific needs I recently de-branded and rooted a xperia play and things went well I used some software that I was told to use and then used gingerbreak excellent stuff but now I have another query.
I have an xperia play running android 2.3.3 with the build version 4.0.A.2.368 originally the handset was on Vodafone I bought it 2nd hand and put my t-mobile sim card in and everything works fine, I have apps on there that relate to Vodafone customers e.g Vodafone store Vodafone updates and something called qype I do not want these an can not uninstall them there is also the apps that came with the 2.3.3 update like the wise pilot app that I don't need and want to remove. I also keep getting low storage warning and cant see why as I only have a few apps installed an about 10 games most of which I have moved to sd card using the built in option.
I have read about not being able to use gingerbreak with 2.3.3 I have read about downgrading to 2.3.2 and then using OTA to update but what I don't want todo is loose my games and apps that are on my fone can anybody tell me if this is possible and how I can do this. I don't want todo anything fancy like over-clocking I just want a way to free up space move apps to the sd card and remove the unwanted apps that I don't need.
I do apologize if this has already been discussed before I have searched and cannot find anything.
Look for thread in the dev section on how to root with zergRush, that should do it even on 2.3.3
And there's a thread about wich apps are safe to delete/freeze. Think it's located in the general section.
Regards Dousan...
thanks i will give this a try a bit later gona backup all the data i can just to stay on the safe side before going head with the it.
You can downgrade to 2.3.2 without loosing your data, just uncheck the ''Wipe data '' box, gingerbreak and then ota to 2.3.3 and you have root on 2.3.3 without data loss
I have A factory unlocked (purchased unlocked from amazon.com) xperia play r800i. Love this phone, considering rooting to remove the bloatware games I do not like, as well as a few other apps (the office app). Found rooting guides, but have a few questions and hoping you can clear them up for me (did not find the answers in other threads).
1. Since my phone came factory unlocked (rather than from a specific carrier, free to use it with any sim card from any carrier), does that mean my bootloader in unlocked, or are they two different things?
2. Once I root my phone, and install the apps I do not want (using the list here on the forums of the safe apps to uninstall), is it possible to reroot my phone?
3. Just to clarify, rooted or not, I will be able to update to ICS 4.0 official (not beta) when Sony releases it? (I know not OTA, they are doing it via their PC companion)
4. Long time reader, first time poster, thanks for all your hard work, keep up the good work, site is very informative.
Alright, Yesterday, My family bit the bullet and purchased Smartphones. I got the Xperia Play R800x, and upgraded it to 2.3.4 while in the store. After reading and looking around, It seems that unless I downgrade to 2.3.3, I can't root it. I then found that if I upgrade back to 2.3.4, Many features would not work. Is this true, or has progress been made so that I may root my Xperia without worry about the repercussions and drawbacks. I'd like to keep 2.3.4, but if I can't, or upgrading back to it has negative effects, how can I fix it. Also, how does the whole 'rooting' process work? I've read several guides and seen many methods, but, as a beginner, I'd like to know what's easiest and most effective. Thanks in advance!

Root works if you have the GSM xperia play on 2.3.4. However we R800x (CDMA users are hosed). There is no official way to root for 2.3.4 for us CDMA users other than root on 2.3.3 and update via OTA.

Sorry, define OTA for me. Does that refer to the Original Service? And are there any downsides to updating to 2.3.4 after rooting 2.3.3?

Over the Air Update, your phone fetches the firmware update from your carrier automatically when you use your 3g connection. There isn't any downside to updating to 2.3.4 after rooting, but since auto syncing of Google services is broken in 2.3.4 (not sure about texting), I recommend freezing or deleting mobile care using SystemCleanup and stay on 2.3.3.
Hi,
UK user on 2.3.4 build 4.0.2.A.0.42 Kernel 2.6.32.9. I've rooted and have frozen a lot of the Sony bloatware many moons ago. I was waiting for ICS before upgrading but obviously we aren't getting ICS
Anyways, I wanted to OTA to the latest version, but I have a number of questions/issues;
1. When I go to get an OTA update it says 4.0.2.A.0.42 is available - I'm already on this version - so why is it offering me this version? Ist it because I have frozen the bloatware? Should I just accept it, so I can get the next one?
2. I have "frozen" a lot of safe apps etc via titanium backup to get rid of the Sony bloatware - do I need to de-frost all this junk to make sure the OTA will work?
3. do any of the OTAs 42+ make you lose root? I have backed up root with superUser and also via Voodoo Root keeper - so even if I lose root I would hope I would be able to get it back?
thanks in advance
