me: focus on 7720
I have 31 apps in app list on phone but it's using the alpha sort headers. What gives? Is it including the number of games to determine when to use the alpha sort function? Is there some way to turn it off?

Oops. I misread your post. I have no idea why the jump list would be visible with only 31 apps. I wouldn't expect it to include games, but who knows?
31? Lucky you.
I need to have 45 apps in order to get that jump list.

+1 you need to have 45 apps
Well, I only have 31 listed and I have a jump list...
So my 31 apps plus the 17 alpha placeholders makes my list 48 items long. It's pretty annoying as it's ugly and inefficient.
I have 30 games installed and I have considered uninstalling some of them to see if that collapses the jump list but I don't want to lose settings and saves...
Sent from my SGH-i917 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
31 games? or 31 apps? Because those are both stored in 2 different places.
If you are talking about games, I didn't even know that the games hub could show the jumplist at all. But then again, I've never installed that many games to find out.
The app list is only supposed to trigger the jumplist at 45. So, your phone is probably bugged.
31 apps. 30 games. App list has jump list. Games hub is normal. Either the games + apps is counted to trigger the jump list, or there is an error somewhere. I fear I'll have to hard reset and restore to pre mango and update again...

45 apps here means, you need to have total 45 icons appear the same time on the app list to get that jump list.

I know that we are only supposed to see the jump list once we have 45 icons in the app list, but what I am saying is that I only have 31 icons in my app list AND I do have the jump list. It's ugly and I don't want it. I am trying to figure out WHY on my phone the jump list is activated.

Oh well, I don't know my friend. I think jump list. Is Is really useful, I don't have to scroll down all the way to open the setting.

I have 43 APPS, and it's showing the jumplist.
Weird.
Just deleted 3 apps, down to 40 and I still have the sort list.
JAJA WOW!!! is somebody really complaining about this? people wanted an easier way to keep track of apps installed in the app list but now that it's here there's complaints? revert back to NoDo if u don't want it. problem solved.

I'm not sure how many apps you need to have, but it is indeed based on the # of apps. I upgrading to Mango & had the jumplist, uninstalled all homebrew apps that no longer worked & the jumplist disappeared.

I doubt it. They all run the same resolution (WVGA/480x800), plus what you are running is a generic Mango RTM or Beta, not the official. So, there's no OEM/Device specific code yet. This may be the case for the Retail though, who knows if OEM's have control over that.

I don't think the OEM had a chance to touch the 7720 before Microsoft release it.
I mean that is what Microsoft did with each ROMs for each Devices before they rolled it out for their OEM.
Smaller screen may result in different configuration, who know?

No, I mean after the RTM. RTM means Release to Manufactorer. This is when OEM's start testing & tweaking it & possibly updating their device specific drivers. As for having different # of apps for jumplist depending on device, that depends if MS gave OEM's a registry to tweak to control this setting, it's possible. I don't see it being done though because of a smaller screen as all device have the same resolution & therefore the same amount of content shows up onscreen, no matter it's physical size. It just looks bigger on a larger screen. This may be the case for the Tango Chassis 2 device from what I remember will be more like a BB/HTC Status in design with a smaller screen & keyboard on the front.

For now I'll stick with my HD7. I got it for $30 with 2 yrs upgrade, so no upgrade for me, plus I'm unemployed atm. I really want more info on this eternity though. If it's worth it, I'll probably get one anyway once I find a job & if it is indeed on T-Mobile USA.
What's I really like is a Mango HD7 hardware with slide out keyboard like the 7 Pro, bigger battery & Super AMOLED Plus screen & better camera lens. I hate how they make you choice between 4.3" screen & hardware keyboard. Plus MS needs a landscape mode for the start screen.
EDIT: Oh, & better speaker that actually have decent base.

They are starting develop the 4.5 inch SAMOLED i think. I read that article somewhere.
Eternity with SLCD is good enough for me. Probably buys some new jeans with bigger front pockets sometime...
After Leo and Schubert, i know i can't stand anything smaller than 4.0 inch on my hand....
T-Mobile is getting through AT&T... not soon... so let's hope.
if not, i will get the International Version then.

Market filters:
When a user searches or browses in Android Market, the results are filtered, and some applications might not be visible. For example, if an application requires a trackball (as specified in the manifest file), then Android Market will not show the app on any device that does not have a trackball.
The manifest file and the device's hardware and features are only part of how applications are filtered — filtering also depends on the country and carrier, the presence or absence of a SIM card, and other factors.
Changes to the Android Market filters are independent of changes to the Android platform itself. This document will be updated periodically to reflect any changes that occur.

Not being able to get apps? Did you read the link? Doubtful. Uh sure. Have fun with vanilla 2.2 and 0.0 apps.
I'm sorry, did you read your own link? If you had scrolled down, it shows several examples of what can be filtered. The filters are implemented by the application developer themselves, and if they don't, they still show up in the market.
Besides, filtering by the application has been in Android since 2.0. Any application that deems a device incapable of running it (for example, a lack of a light sensor) can stop itself from running.
some kind of filter (the ones I've heard of so far are incompatible screen resolution, unverified builds, and protected apps) is already being applied to 2.1 in the AOSP build. I couldnt see Yelp, the Android Community and TMZ apps for whatever reason

Oh yeah, how suspicious. French people couldn't possibly prefer apps in French and people with that new Dell pad thing probably still want SMS and contact apps.
Yeah
so you are saying not upgrade to 2.2 because marketplace will filter apps for our phone, but stick with 2.1 because it doesn't?
well genius, why don't you go and install http://www.appbrain.com/app/com.yelp.android on your phone and let us know how that 'no filtering' works out for you.
When I was running my Vougue we ran into this problem as well, its not a big deal at all. from what I remember it was checking about the build.prob and screen size that is setup in your startup. what I used to do was set my phone to my the specs for the G1, then install the apps after adjusting the density to fit everything on screen and then reboot using factory startup. it worked pretty well for most of the apps since many only blocked off whatever border the developer had.
heres the problem though but with the pace we are going it wont come up for a while, once we decide we have a rom stable enough to flash we lost the abilty to change the settings since WM is copletely gone and no haret was used. I switched over to the Touch Pro and we had the exact same problem which was solved in the EXACT way but we were not flashed still(TP2 still has a LOOOONG way to go sad to say), kept the touch pro 2 for only a few weeks before they replaced my Sprint Line TP with a Touch pro 2 due to all the TP1 problems and i'm still saddened by the slow progress. I am a developer myself and even an avid budsmoker and was still able to help out. now Refer has done a great job but from my understanding he is just doing most changes to the Android Filesystem, theirs a couple other guys working on the kernels which would be were all the hardware problems are going to be fixed from. no matter what build we use something in the kernel is either not right, or we dont have the driver in place for Android itself and since we have few Hardware level developers working on these things it seems to be low progress.

To be fair, I'd say Swiping through screens has been there in Android for long, can't recall when exactly, but I think YouTube app was one of the first, the tiles do give out a hint of WP7, but again, I find the styling bit more close to Web version of the Market.
As for slow refresh, yes I do notice that too !! I'm sure will be fixed in future updates
the tiles on the front screen was the wp7 thing.
swiping left and right - didnt even cross my mind

Yeah, google should also put an option to disable the preview page, the one with bigger images, for each category..It works good on wi-fi, but can't work on low 3g or edge..After 10 minutes i browsing the market, it downloaded about 16 MB of data..too much
Really want to install this but the amount of data it consumes seems kinda crazy.
I've been using the new Android Market for about a day now and I'm really enjoying it.The new layout is nice and gives the market a more premium feel. Some new great high quality apps would make it almost perfect.

According to this leaked accessory document AT&T is preparing to release another HTC Smartphone, the HTC Eternity. From this document we can see that a battery, a dock, and bunch of HTC cases are going to accompany HTC Eternity.
After some email correspondence with HTCPedia Shop (from whom we received this document), we were told that HTC Eternity will be a Windows Phone 7.5 Mango smartphone, featuring 4.7" display, a 1.5GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 8MP camera, HDMI port, and more.
We were not able to get a confirmed launch date for the HTC Eternity, but a confirmation on a carrier was solid, it will be AT&T. Our rough guess for its release date would have to fall around 2011 holiday season, so very soon.

The XAP is still there in the rom taking up space sure there is no tile anymore in the application list but that doesnt mean the XAP is gone. For instance if you take a Samsung Focus from AT&T and flash the Rogers ROM to it (99% vanilla) you get about 200MB more space also you dont have the at&t crap boot logo or thier ringtones/wallpapers cluttering things up. You also get 100% of the functionality Samsung designed into the phone.

EDIT - 23rd FEB - Version 2.4 fixes the issues with 'Events'.
The LONG awaited update makes facebook kickass! I just got one on my Titan. Exploring it, but so many visible changes already. Update this post soon. If anyone noticed changes do update us!
EDIT1: You can get it manually by going to marketplace and then facebook, press update
It will forget your user ID and password, so re-log-in.
EDIT2: It's a complete revamp of the UI. Excellent speed... Now supports time line feature too!
EDIT3: supports groups and pages as well as very reliable checkin. Photo albums load as quick on 3G as on wifi in previous version, even faster! Still can't "poke" back from the app. Push notifications need testing though
I've already changed my rating and review and given it 5 stars. Hope most users do it too so that others get an idea of how good this official app has become!
5 stars for me too. Therefore long wait for this update. With carbon for Twitter, I appreciate my omnia for a long time.

Just installed the update a couple of minutes ago. Man, THIS is how it should have looked and worked like in the first place. Really sexy and overall pretty useful now.
Sorry to say but the banner is even bigger and its just as laggy and slow. Try scrolling the panorama, it freezes and slows down... Quite disappointing.
Also there are still no notifications when pinning the inbox to the start screen...
Yes it got a bit better. But not much, the messages still take ages to load (implement a database!).
Push notifications still come in very delayed (but this might be an FB issue and not their fault).
Lets hope they will fix this soon and not let us wait another half year.
But the good thing is the design is better and it has more features. There is hope for a next version
EDIT: Other parts dont seem to be that laggy. Its mainly the frontpage and probably due to the collapsing of the appbar, that slows down the panning of the panorama.
Hmm no update showing available yet on my UK titan...
Edit...
Installing now
Is it just my or did they really remove the shake-to-refresh feature?

For me Panorama/without Panorama, the scrolling and panorama was a breeze! Could it be the internet connection difference? I am not sure about the notifications on mine yet. Ironically not a single notification yet
Message loading is much improved that last version, it could defo be better though.

Well try panning the mainpage panorama from the news feed a full cycle back to the newsfeed. I mean horizontal panning, not the vertical scrolling itself (which is quite smooth). The horizontal panning freezes constantly and lags (Lumia 800). Which makes it a bit unpleasant to use...
I have just downloaded and for sure it kicks asses.
But this just makes me confuse. Is Microsoft trying to integrate everything in WP Apollo?
i mean, mango is first step when we have Facebook and Twitter deep linked in ( notification through Me Hub), but why MS keep updating the apps ?
i don't mean this is a bad move, but does it makes people care less about the social - life ability of next Windows Phone build?
Or they just wanna drop some stuffs to temp fix what Mango can't do about Facebook at the moment and then include it in Apollo?

I am using an HTC Titan and I just tried it on my wife's Focus. It doesn't do anything on her phone either. Wierd!
The hardware and design of this phone are top notch - most features work really well except anything in regards to multi-tasking. I am very disappointed that its missing basic functionality I thought should be pretty standard these days especially on a flagship device. Case in point - Usa today app, its always been really nice while traveling since I can sync it before flying and read all the articles while in-flight on my iPhone during airplane mode, with the One X any open browser page or related app becomes a useless blank page when airplane mode is switched on. Heck even the picture I had open in the gallery section closed and took me back to the main gallery (picture) folder and of course this does not need an internet connection.
It looks like Sense 4.0 has eliminated multi-tasking, as much as I like the device otherwise I just cant give up so much basic functionality that I have been enjoying for years on other phones... Will probably have to return and go back to my iphone 4 for now.. Bummer -
It does not appear that HTC recognizes this short-coming as a problem and considers this normal functionality so I cant just wait for an update/fix...
Anyone else feel this way ?

multitasking is a bit of a joke on this phone. I hope HTC addresses this in a future update.
sent from my HTC One X
Since Sense + OS alone consume most of the ram (> 80%) on the device, I suppose integrated Android task killer is configured in some paranoid mode and is killing backgroups apps like crazy.
If this bothers you, I would install one of senseless ROMs on your HD2 and be happy Possibly there is also a way to make task killer more civilized in custom Sense ROMs.
Sadly, Sense 4.0 is quit bloated and One-X should have at least 1.5GB of RAM to begin with.
Yup, I agree, multitasking is really bad... All my dolphin browser pages reload if I click the home button and try to go back.

When I change the wireless state on my i9100 the same thing happens so it's Android, not HTC or the One X. Even if the USA Today home page was retained clicking on any of the stories would result in an error because there's no wireless connection available. Get an app like Pocket that allows you to save articles from across the web for offline reading. The CNN app also gives you the option to save stories offline.
The multitasking on this phone sucks period. There is not justification. I should not be here looking for an answer. XDA devs should be enhancing the phone not trying to fix basic functionality. I hope HTC solves this problem before my trail period.

Do any of you understand how multitasking in Android even works? Even if a task is killed by the OS, apps developed that follow the published standard will re-launch in their last state in less than a second. And the better XDA devs should know that. So while HTC's memory management may be aggressive, there's more to it if individual apps aren't behaving correctly.

If you're not happy w it, return it ASAP. Why do you have to care about what others think? It's your money, your experience.
Case closed. Meetings adjourned lol

Its called a forum, in which I can and will reach out to others to get feedback on what I consider a situation with a very flawed segment of Sense which is making me contemplate returning an otherwise very nice device.
Look Apple has been doing this puesdo multi-tasking, app-pausing just fine since 4.0 what the heck is HTC thinking ? Browser tabs store just fine for days WITHOUT an internet connection. I geuss I am just expecting too much.
Sorry to interupt move along nothing to see here - lol
If you really want to pile-on, head over here. The XL'rs are far more up in arms than the X'rs.

I've asked the same questions of people that say the way multitasking is implemented is a real hardship but no one's answered. What's the harm? Of "X" hours a day using the phone, what percentage of your time is actually spent active in two (or more) apps simultaneously? And with a powerful processor it shouldn't matter whether a background app is in state or has to be restarted based on the way Android works (see below). I'm not trying to pick a fight I'm trying to understand the depth of the issue.
And since no one's read the article I linked to, here's the cruxt...
Once Android determines that it needs to remove a process, it does this brutally, simply force-killing it. The kernel can then immediately reclaim all resources needed by the process, without relying on that application being well written and responsive to a polite request to exit. Allowing the kernel to immediately reclaim application resources makes it a lot easier to avoid serious out of memory situations.
If a user later returns to an application that's been killed, Android needs a way to re-launch it in the same state as it was last seen, to preserve the "all applications are running all of the time" experience. This is done by keeping track of the parts of the application the user is aware of (the Activities), and re-starting them with information about the last state they were seen in. This last state is generated each time the user leaves that part of the application, not when it is killed, so that the kernel can later freely kill it without depending on the application to respond correctly at that point.
And based on this, the SGS3's handling memory managment just like the One X so there don't appear to be a lot of options for those with special multitasking needs.

The GS3 has the same multitasking "issue" as the One X. I have tested it. That's all the more reason why I don't expect HTC to fix it in an update. I believe it's how the manufacturers intend it to work, for better or worse.

Try to install Apex launcher free version and set it as default launcher. Reboot and see is situation get better. If works for you then it is sense problem.
It works like a charm on my X. No any problem for multitask. And it is so smooth.
Of course if you do want sense launcher then have to live with issue. But no harm to try Apex to see at least multitask can wrok or not
BarryH_GEG everything looks nice when you write it down like that but i remember SGS did better multitasking then my new double ram HTC One X, on daily basis it kills everything when i9000 never killed my GG chatting app or music player - both just should be ON all the time i was using them thats only 2 apps to handle
At a co-workers urging I installed Go-launcher today in hopes of a quick fix. yeah nothing, still re-renders everything fricken thing it touches.
Should I stil try Apex ?
Apex so far is best launcher for one X. I used it for 1 month. If it is not work for you I will post another solution which may help.
Apex- ok you might be on to something !
Can still hold app data while in airplane mode...

If your rooted then flash Jan's Advance Notification toggle to enable Airplane Mode it will retain the webpage because you're not going into a different app.

I dont think this is caused by sense taking up too much resources. Seems to be an ics inherent thing. The sgs3 was just reported to behave the same way.
Oh yes i tried the ipad3 the other day. The display was perfect but what surprises me is it multitasks amazingly well. I can have 5 - 6 apps open including youtube and browser with multiple tabs and it switches between them smoothly without once quiting the browser. Really sad to see android/ ics regressed to this state that ios significantly beat it.
if it is ics problem why I can use mutlitask on my one X?

I keep asking the question "what does it mean?" and everyone keeps replying "it shouldn't be this way." If a doctor says "there’s something wrong with your liver," there's a big difference between hepatitis A and stage 3 cancer. Other than the perceived loss of something you had how does the way that the One X handles multitasking affect what you do every day? And how often is it a problem?
I had a i9100 and in practical use I don't notice a difference. The exception being the browser that stupidly reloads itself every time it restarts but it does that regardless of whether launched from recent apps or directly from the app drawer or a shortcut.
And if this is true it doesn't really matter what a Desire, HD2, or SGS did.
