So i run 2.3.3 unrooted and updated to the latest firmware.
Problem is my battery goes down so fast now. 08:00 to 18:00 and it is dead. I havnt even used it much.
Normally i can just about squeeze 2 days out of it, now it is only lasting 10 hours.
If i click tools, settings, battery use, the processes display very fast, then disapear so i can not even see what is draining it.
Can anyone recomend a battery app so i can see what is using all the juice?
Use battery life calibration to reset the battery cache first.. Also see what is eating your battery after the reset

Thanks for the suggestion, but.....
1) I am not rooted as stated in my original post (so cant use battery calibration)
2) I cant see what is eating the battery as the processes disapear when i try to look, as i also stated.....
lol
Any other ideas?
Could be that your RAM is getting chewed. Buy juice defender ultimate and memory booster lite? See what's running around in the system and do something about it, root or ignore
Reason your phones dieing fast? Maybe you DLed alot of apps and they run in background, using battery.

Sorry I don't have any suggestions to your problem but there's definitely a bug or two in the new fw?
This is how my battery usage looks like. First fpse took up three rows of space but then it all of a sudden took five rows?

Havnt downloaded anything since i updated. Apart from the firmware update, everything is exaclty the same.
I think i have found the answer anyway.
There is a new feature in the firmware update that tells you when you lose signal. I presume that it then searches for a new signal and thus wasting the battery in a way that it didnt do before.
I work in a concrete building where the signal is constantly on and off and i believe that the phone is constantly scanning for a signal, probably a new feature of the firmware update.
I am going to swith the phone to GMS only tomorrow and see if it makes a difference. (gsm is a stronger signal where i live).
Im quite sure that is the reason.

Yes, this is the exact problem i have too.
Definately a bug.
Also take into consideration that if you have xLoud switched on this is also a sure way that your battery life will drain if you have a lot of audio playing.

Yes i know.
But the way the Xperia Play does this has changed since the Firmware update.
I know it has changed because now there is a message that is displayed as a notification. If the notification process is constantly cycling, which it now does since the update, and not before, this may be eating up more battery power than necessary.
Since i have not changed anything on my phone, the quick death of the battery is most probable something to do with the firmware update. I believe this change to be the most likely candidate since it is the only thing that is constantly cycling on and off.
Either that or the SE data widget is eating up the battery since that is the only thing i have added to the homescreen.
Both are possible i guess.
Your device searching for a signal is exactly what is killing it. I know on any of my verizon phones I have owned when I am in an area that has little or no signal my battery will die in just a few hours. Not sure what the device is like over seas, but any time I have a crappy signal my battery will deplete very very fast, but it usually shows up in battery manage as cell standby.
Ok,how do permanetently SHUT DOWN the Phones Signal Searching? It also drains my battery too >_>

Settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile Networks, Network Mode ----> GSM only.
This will not eliminate the problem, but it will prevent the phone searching for the superior WCDMA signal. The downside is that you can only get G and E data connections. But......this doesn't matter because if you are in a weak signal area you have no hope of getting an H connection anyway.
GSM is generally a stronger signal in my area. Probably yours too (and thus reduces signal search cycling even further because you are going to have a signal for more of the time).
I will test this tomorrow and let you know how it goes. I am sure the Firmware update has caused the phone to cycle more frequently when seaching for a signal and this is why the battery now drains faster.
Thanks to the poster above who confirmed this drains the battery too.
What you could do is do what I do... I use Tasker and have a profile that turns on airplane mode if it sees that the connection has dropped to 0, such as when I'm in the underground parts of my work building. Then every 9 minutes, it will turn off airplane mode, check for signal again for a minute or two and if there's still no signal, back to airplane mode and repeat.
There are also a few apps you can use such as NoBars that can help you do the same thing easily.
The same problem after Update to newest Version. The Network Standby is the Energy-eater in my Batterystatussettings.

Is there a solution to fix this?
Im currently losing 10% battery every hour and not even using the phone!
Anyone has any suggestions?
I currently consider my phone broke since the battery goes so dam fast.
I have not used my phone at all and am now down to 35% after 4.5 hours usage.
This, at the moment, is completely unnaceptable. Will make an offical post on the Sony forums when i get home.
Firmware update has definately broke the battery usage when you are constnatly traversing in areas with little to no signal.
Use Nobar, airplane mode....

I guess it will happen to all phones with the new firmwarw and constantly in areas with little or no signal.
I am guessing the signal search frequency has been altered for more search attempts per minute or whatever.
Going to try nobars. Thanks for the suggestions all.

EDIT
I was able to solve my battery issue by formatting my SD card. Something on there was causing the battery to drain 2-3 times more quickly than normal. After formatting, I went from 6-8 hour battery life to around 20 hours with significant usage (Google, Exchange, IMAP, Facebook all on push, 3G+Bluetooth+GPS on, 4G and wifi as needed for extra speed).
Important to note, I am not entirely convinced that the Android OS and battery drain are related since I still have Android OS near if not at the top of my battery consumption screen, but the improved actual longevity is very significant. I recommend anyone having their battery run out format their SD card (and possibly USB storage) and see if that helps (obviously back up any important data first!). Good luck!
ORIGINAL POST
I'm getting pretty bad battery life, and it looks like "Android OS" is consuming most of it. I've rebooted (as suggested in other threads), checked OS Monitor for high-CPU usage processes, but nothing stands out. This is un-rooted, stock OS with no third party launchers installed.
I have a feeling if this issue was fixed, I'd be getting great battery life. This happening to anyone else?
Screenshots show the device at 38% after 6.5 hours off the charger.

That's an awful lot of awake time with no screen on time. Do you have things updating in the background frequently? I.e. social hub, Facebook, news widgets?

No, I don't. I have fewer widgets and fewer accounts (haven't set up my work Exchange yet) than I previously had on my EVO, which got great battery life.
I've been on Android over a year and am quite familiar with how it works... I'm just unfamiliar with Samsung specifically and unrooted devices and was hoping someone might have a similar experience.
I have the same thing. Significantly more awake time then screen on time, and Android OS eating the battery. Also stock.
Same here too
I had this exact issue and no longer do. Here is what I did and posted in another thread:
OK I hope someone finds this useful and/or can verify. I was one of those people getting awful battery life, meaning lucky to last 8 hours from 100% to 0%. The "Android OS" process would take hours of CPU time. Now it will take up maybe 30 min over the course of the day. Here is the only thing I did between the time it went from bad to good. I changed the wifi sleep policy. It is by default (for me at least) set to never. I changed it to "when the screen turns off" and left it there for about an hour. Then went in and changed it back to never. From the point of doing this my battery life has been great.
I know it sounds strange but it seems to have worked for me so I thought I would share.

I rarely use wifi as well but this setting seemed to affect the phone in general, if your using wifi or not. I might just be crazy though. Either way I no longer have the issue so
does the google voice widget pull data in the background or is it a push thing?
I'm seeing high usage (60+%) by AndroidOS also (stock, unrooted, not using WiFi, not using 4G), although battery life has not been bad that I have noticed.
Watchdog Lite indicates that this is primarily due to two processes:
events/0
suspend

my galaxy nexus battery seems drain very fast, for standby it goes around 4-5%per hour, is it normal?i have a screen shot here, looks like the launcher eats a lot of power out of it...
by the way, I'm using the Android Revolution HD 2.1.5 ROM.
Could anyone please tell me how to improve the battery? just posted a thread and this took 2% in 2 mins! I'm using WIFI connection...
I tried battery calibration, wipe battery information, still don't get any change...
Firstly 4.0.3 gives better battery performance. That's the main reason I switched from ARHD to AOKP; which also has power saving options to switch off wifi and 3G on screen off. Secondly, I use custom kernels which are mainly tuned to better speed and battery. I can also undervolt the CPU too eek out the extra juice. Finally, minimise apps and widgets that keep wakelocks. Use apps like betterbatterystats and CPU Spy to find the wakelocks and remove those apps.
So yes. It seems your battery drain is on the high side for the usage you describe but don't expect miracles. I'm running a really lean system and I can get something like 2-3% over 8 hours when idle. When actually using the device, the battery drain is, of course, high.

Hi there, thanks for your reply and advice! I will switch to AOKP too. the problem I got was that the phone sometimes loses signal for no reason at all. I will use AOKP and find a better radio baseband. Could you tell me which version of AOKP and kernal and radio you are using? I would love it if I can have my phone standby 8 hrs and only down by 2-3%.

turn off the services you donot need (when not using) - like wifi, bluetooth, data, gps ....
a lower screen backlight also helps
do you have a good network coverage in your area, if not this is the main reason for battery drain
changing network selection to manual is painful when you travel from one zone to another (as you have to manually choose operator network again and again) but it saves battery in cases where network is weak
and lastly - have your battery checked .. could be chances of a bad battery if it is too old

These stats don't really mean anything unless you look at the big picture. In general, it seems you may have too many wakelocks not allowing your phone to go into deep sleep. Get BetterBatteryStats and CPU Spy from the market and hunt down the apps responsible.
There are tens of threads in this forum alone that deal with the issue of battery drain and wakelocks so let's not expand this thread. Please search and, if all else fails, PM me.

If you uncheck data that will save you battery power definitely, also you can leave data disabled and still make and receive calls normally. None of this will affect wifi, you will only have to enable mobile networks once you're not around a wifi signal but need data services

In the last few days, I have noticed that the process "Android OS" has been using maximum battery life (about 16-35%) and has also been consuming large amounts of data.
The only thing I have done recently is allow the facebook app to upload all pics from my mobile.
Any connection? FYI, I have not added a Samsung account.
Apologies if this has been answered earlier by I did search for it.
what version of android are you running?
what ROM? what kernel?
how long ago did you start to notice this?
is it a constant issue, or does it fix itself after a reboot or something, or with data connection turned off?
do you use google now?
if you are on the jelly bean 4.1.1 version, did you update OTA or odin? just curious, probably not related anyways...
what recovery are you using?
just trying to get some info before i help. many things in the android OS can be directly or indirectly related to each other but still have a side effect on battery life.
16-30% in general has been relatively normal on JB. (Usually between 14-18% is where it settles to)
Keep in mind that unless you are at least halfway through your batt cycle its going to be higher. If you're at 90-95% batt it can be much higher, just due to percentages and battstats being reset.
Not sure why you didn't find anything though, this has been covered a great many times in the past 6 weeks! Did you look at what the top processes are under Android System?

I had installed root66 prerooted JB rom. When I noticed the problem, I installed stock ICS through odin, updated to stock JB then rooted again but the problem continues.
I have been noticing this for about a couple of weeks. Restarting doesnt help but I havent yet tried turning off data. Will try that and let you know.

Is this something peculiar to JB? I didnt see this in ICS. The top processes currently showing in the battery stats are Android OS: 28%, Voice calls: 17%, Screen: 11%, android system: 8%...
Is there anyway to check exactly which app is using the battery and data which is showing as Android OS?

Odd... mine is usually only around 10%
Mine generally sits between 11-14% depending on use. But it can show 30+ if you check it at certain times.
For example, if you've fully charged the battstats will have reset. If you reboot the phone it will kick off the media scanner which can run for a while (this can also be the cause of it heating up for a short time). So once its complete it will have used a rather sizable chunk of the overall battery use. Since it usually doesn't run again, the percentage will steadily drop as other processes use the battery.
I know we aren't really discussing the media scanner, but I use it as an example that is pretty easy to see if you watch it.
Android system has a lot of processes which are listed under its category so depending on how each person uses their device it can vary a bit. Most screenshots of 'normal' reports that I've seen usually are around 14-18%. For me its lower, but I'm pretty sure I don't use mine the same way others do. There are times though where it can go higher for me, depending on what kinds of stuff I'm messing with or testing out.
I believe transferring large amounts of data over mtp is one thing that can cause it to go up...
Hope that makes sense.

my phone just started this last night. i took it off the charger around 11 last night (100% charged) and it woke me up at 3:30 with a low battery indicator, i checked task manager and nothing was open battery stats showed that android os was at i think 38%. i put it on the charger this morning at around 9 am because it had died fully. it's now 1 pm and it's at 95% charged, typically it takes only a couple hours to charge. my phone is fully stock running jb.

What kernel/ROM and version of recovery are you using?
You can track data consumption of Android system apps via Droidstats
You'll be able to know wether it's Google Maps or any other service that uses data
I am fairly confident I've tracked it down to the touch sounds. Sounds dumb I know, but I believe they are wake locking excessively. I have much better results with ANDROID OS drain with them turned off. Interested to see if others do too.

Hey there,
im having a similar issue with my Google Nexus 10 running stock Android 4.2.2 (fresh install of factory image and then manual update with ota update.zip).
Here are two screenshots (didnt want to include here because they are HUGE and I dont know how to resize them in forum "code"):
One
Two
I havent been using it much the last days and im a little spoiled by an iPad 2 standby time so this is not very acceptable
I'll try Droidstats and see what I can make out of it.

Looks like you haven't used the tab (screen time) that much over the two days, making Android OS seem overtly guilty.
Try disabling touch sounds -- settings-sounds- touch sounds
Then let us know. I am convinced that is the culprit of the wake locks, keeping the Android OS (kernel & drivers) high and eating battery.

Sorry, forgot to mention it. I have them disabled since i own this tablet (and I checked it again).
I wanted to try DroidStats, but it seems to be an app for calls, sms and data
Can you post a link to this app (if its allowed )
EDIT:
Yesterday a friend of mine showed me the battery stats on his Galaxy S2 and had almost 40% "Android OS".... but he has never had better battery life. I start to think that (because of the percentage system) the built in battery tools are almost useless
Is 4 days a normal standby time for the Nexus 10? That would be very bad in my opinion.
I've just started seeing the same thing with my Galaxy S3 (Samsung issued ICS, rooted). Normally the battery will last around 24 hours with light use, but currently it's draining from full to warning level in about 4 hours with the screen mostly off (wi-fi, bluetooth and GPS are off at the moment). Touch sounds have been set to off from day one.
Yesterday, the culprit looked to be Beautiful Widgets (around 38%) so I turned some of that off (weather update animations, etc) but I'm still getting the same drain speed - now showing Android OS 26%, Cell standby 22%, Android System 15%, Screen 11%. Not sure if I trust the results though, the BW issue from yesterday could have been a red-herring.

[SOLVED!!]
i have this problem with my galaxy grand phone ,the battery discharges in 20hr , default OS was 4.1.2 official samsung , i changed my rom into a slim custom rom based 4.2.2 , but the battery has same problem again , Android OS battery Usage Was 80% !!!! and screen usage just was 9% !

[SOLVE]
first go to Settings -> Developer Options -> Apps Tab -> checked Don't keep activities
set brightness to auto
then go to location services -> off access my location
then go to wifi -> advanced Wi-Fi -> keep wi-fi on during sleep -> change to Never
now go to application manager -> Running Tab -> Force stop some apps with extra ram usage like settings
my phone just uses 5% battery in 13hr sleep mode ; ENJOY!
Hello,
I was wondering if you guys would be kind enough to help me figure out what has been going on with my battery lately.. First up, here is all the relevant info:
Phone: Galaxy Nexus GT-i9250 GSM
Network: T-Mobile USA
ROM: Paranoid Android 2.54 - this is based on 4.1.2 - NOT the latest 4.2.1
Kernel: Franco Kernel Milestone 6 <-- My battery issues only started after I switched to this kernel. I had to ditch the stock kernel than came with PA because it was slow as molasses.
Here is the battery drain that shows 43% of total battery was drained in 6 hours

Here are some more details that show how much time the phone was awake:
Partial wakelocks are shown here using BetterBatteryStats. I don't know what AudioOut_2 is but it's sucking down battery. Exchange is another battery hog evidently.. I don't understand why Google Plus is running, I NEVER open the program.
Here are the kernel wakelocks:
Here are the alarms that show which app is waking up the device how many times. LightFlow and Exchange seem to do this a lot. I have no idea why maps keeps waking my phone, I haven't opened Maps once or changed locations but the location service is relentless.
Here is CPU Spy showing that Deep Sleep is definitely working:
Please can anyone help me figure out why my battery drain is so out of control? I forgot to screenshot screen on time but it was less than 30 minutes. You can sort of see this from the graph on image #2.
Thank you in advance.
Bumping this in hopes that someone is able to help me figure this out.
it seems like your signal is fairly bad most of the time, that will drain your battery pretty bad since the device will try to seek better signal.
also, i would suggest you to upgrade to latest PA along with latest franco r361, I see a significant battery improvement after the upgrade.
light flow is keeping your phone awake as well.

Thanks. Yes the signal is not great at my office, but it hasn't changed in the last few months. What has changed however, is how drastically my battery is now dying, this is recent.
I would update to the the new PA with 4.2.1 but there are a few things I'm not ready to give up yet like the old toggles etc. Once the new PA builds some of those older features back in, I'll be upgrading for sure.

Yes it is, I don't know why it wakes up my phone so much. I tried checking the "reduce phone wakes" option, but that seems to miss notifications all the time.
Overall, even with not so great signal and light flow running, this battery drain just seems WAY too much, would you agree?
what is your screen on time?
and light flow has been known to kill battery. id honestly remove it.

How often do you charge the battery? Do you plug it in all the time? Do you run it dead all the time? Your battery may be getting shot out, happened to my wife's to the point it would not take a charge. New battery fixed it. Buy a battery of eBay for ten bucks. Worse comes to worse you have a backup battery if that wasn't the problem. Audio out only took 3.5% and most of the time was deep sleep. I think your battery is dying

I charge it at least once a day - every night. Sometimes I'll plug it in during the day if I know I'm going out in the evening just so it'll be topped off when I go out. But I thought charging these batteries a lot didn't affect their ability to hold a charge?
I'll definitely buy a new battery either way, hopefully that's what it is.
In case anyone else has any other insight, please do share in the meantime.

For Maps wakeups. Try disabling auto location update if its not already. Open Maps > Settings > Location update (something like that)

Cheers. I do already have everything turned off, screenshot attached.
Could it be Google Now that's causing these location updates? It always knows how far away Home is when I'm away from Home.

The more I think about it, the more I believe that Google Now could be a major culprit in draining battery. I'm going to try disabling it entirely to test. Do you have any experience with that by any chance? On how it affects battery?

You're right, I set it to "do not update your location". What does this do exactly? Looks promising though.

Okay so I know people have been having the Cell Standby battery drain issue which I am affected by as well however turning off WiFi fixes that problem temporarily, My main issue is with Android OS and Google Play Services. Turning off location access seems to help with the Google Play Services but Android OS loves to eat the rest of my battery and honestly i'm lucky to get an hour of screen on time.
Anyone know of any solutions to this? I'm running stock everything, baseband version G925TUVU2COF6.

So I don't know how or why but I just restored my phone twice in a row and it's fine now. Why did I do it twice? Because the first restore caused the phone to lag and the fingerprint sensor stopped working. Anyways, I've been using it for like 3 hours and my screen is actually the most battery consuming thing like it should be so if it changes back to its old ways I'll report back.

Greatly appreciated. How is it today? I guess restoring is an option I can try but such a pain
-Collin-
So it's back to its old ways and I'm guessing it's because I updated Google Play Services and after that the issue started happening again. However I should have noted in my last post that while doing the initial setup of the phone I did not allow tmobile diagnostics like I normally do so that may play a role in this, but I'm pretty sure it's just google.
The restore though did appear to fix the cell standby issue that I previously had because I'm leaving wifi on 24/7 even with wifi power saving mode off in the service menu (dial *#0011#) and it's not causing excess drain anymore.

What's WiFi power save mode?
Edit: nvm. Just Googled it. Lol. Does it stay off or do I have to keep turning it off manually? Seems like the S3 guys back in the day said they had to keep turning it off manually. My WiFi connections are actually a lot better right now. Usually get bad connection in my room.
Mine stays off I don't have to keep switching it. I keep mine off because apparently samsungs are finicky with ASUS routers. :/

It will start acting up again soon. You can boot into recovery and just clear cache and get the same result for a day or two.
UPDATE -- I have fixed my drain issue on WiFi
So I just recently received my S6 Edge on Monday. Rooted it immediately using the AOU kernel method to not trip KNOX. After that, of course turned on Wifi to get all my apps back and downloaded. Later on Monday, I was at work and phone was perfect without any drain. Got home and it connected to my Wifi and it just smoked through my battery sitting doing nothing.
Started research and seen it was dealing with WiFi. Well I am here to tell you it is not. It is SPECIFICALLY due to the com.tmobile.pr.adapt. I had this keep popping up after rooting and it wanted access...so given it was tmobile I granted it. This morning, I woke up, turned off VoLTE and left WiFi on and it did nothing but draining my battery 4% in 20 minutes sitting dark on a table. Turned off wifi and it worked great(basically stopped it in its tracks) so I went to the market, downloaded Package Disabler and disabled that com.tmobile.pr.adapt. My phone has now been sitting at 95% for 25 minutes. Welp...just dropped to 94% but I would say my battery drain issue is solved.
I will most likely be using Titanium and deleting it but wanted to just turn it off for now to see if it was the issue.
After 1hr30 minutes, I have dropped 3% and this is while using the phone and letting it sit idle.

Big mistake.
Com.tmobile.pr.adapt is what tmobile installs on these phones to check for root.
Once enabled it reports to tmobile that your device is rooted, and if any issues come up warranty wise they will reject your warranty.
Aou warns in his thread not to grant su permission to this app after rooting.

I just noticed that disabling the service requires root, so my journey to success was rather short-lived.
I don't care about my warranty, but why on earth would this app be responsible for the battery drain issue if all it does is check for root? Argh.
Still happily draining 25% per hour while phone is sitting idle...
-Collin-
When you go to "battery" and click on detail, then click on the app you can see how much info this app sends in your data usage back to tmobile.
This how most of these apps suck up your battery.
Pp.
I switched from a 5ghz network to 2.4ghz network and can leave wifi on without severe battery drain. Stock, not rooted. Cell standby is still #1, but there is a noticeable improvement in battery life and you get to keep wifi turned on.
So I was able to root my phone without tripping knox and I installed Wakelock detector, here's some screen shots if this helps someone out trying to figure out exactly what is causing the issue, because even with root battery drain is still there.
