Feel free to beat me to death with my own mouse if this Q was already obviously answered somewhere, but I have searched these forums and failed to find a definitive answer on the matter....
I downloaded the WM6 beta ROM (RUU_Excalibur_TMO_US_1.20.531.1_4.1.13.34_02.79.90_Test), and have CID unlocked my device via Gsmliberty.com. My question is...do I need to install the updated bootloader (RUU_Excalibur_SPL-1.11_UpgradeOnly.exe) on my S620, or is this bootloader only necessary for the Dash?
I want to make certain I am doing this right, in fear of bricking my device.
Answers?
if your bootloader is wrong the upgrade will give you an error message and restart your phone
The S620 is running bootloader 1.11.405.4
Just for kicks I ran the bootloader upgrade (which actually downgrades to lower version) and I got a (206)Connection Error.
I'm pretty sure you do need it. Like stated above, if you get an error when you try the upgrade, the answer is YES!!
You'll definitely need it if you try to go back...

But how can I install the RUU_Excalibur_SPL-1.11_UpgradeOnly.exe bootloader? When I attempt do so I get the Connection Error. I launch the setup wizard, my Screen gets the rainbow bar with the word USB appearing at the bottom. At that point the installer seems to hang or timeout and I get that blasted connection error. Even the device appears stuck and I have to remove the battery to bring it back to a state of consciousness.
Am i doing something wrong?
you really should read the available info regarding this subject before you attempt to do something like this. if you read the thread about 13 posts down regarding flashing a cosmo you will see how to do the upgrade. it worked for me on my s620. i downloaded the files that the person giving the instructions provided a link to instead of editing my own files.
Hi,
this is my first post so please bear with me.
Mods: if this is the wrong forum, my apologies.
I'm trying to root my Hero so I can try those amazing custom Roms that some of you are providing.
I've tried 3 methods now, which all are seeming to fail for me.
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=543571 - I get an error message saying "not allowed" (not 100% sure about the exact error message, I did it yesterday) at step 5). I tried it on my computer running Windows 7 64bit and on my laptop running XP.
2. http://theunlockr.com/2009/08/27/how-to-root-your-htc-hero-in-one-click/ - I think I have to downgrade my firmware for that because I have the latest. Problem is, I don't have a card reader right now but I will purchase one if it's the only way for me to root my Hero.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=559362 - This one was a complete disaster for me.
So my thought was that all those guides were failing because of my firmware. Is this theory correct or am I just doing something wrong?
I'm a very computer literate person (at least I think so ), but this is my first smart phone.
Any help appreciated.
Fabio

am i the only one who finds this phrase funny?
HTC Desire
bought 2 weeks ago from mobiles.co.uk on the Orange network (dolphin)
So, I've applied god knows how many updates, downgrades, "fixes", flashes and sdcard updates to try and get my phone screen back, to no avail.
I originally followed some guide on XD about installing custom Froyo ROM, Open Desire, and a few other bits to downgrade the ROM and root. Since then spent hours following all the various fixes on here, to no avail.
Need urgent support please to get my screen back.
No idea what is in the phone now so expert guidance welcome to debug my specific circumstances. Links to threads simply are not working for me. Need to start from the beginning and figure out what is in my phone in terms of S/W versions, and move forward.
RRUs: none of these work - all give "error 140 - bootloader version error":
RUU_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8_Radio_32.43.00. 32U_5.09.00.20_release_140022_signed.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_Europe_1.15.405.3_Radio_32.30.00.28U _4.05.00.11_release_121865.exe
RUU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_Radio_32.36.00.28U_4. 06.00.02_2_release_126984_signed.exe
RRU_Bravo_HTC_WWE_1.21.405.2_T2_Radio_32.41.00.32U _4.08.00.09_release_137222_signed.exe
Can anyone help please.
My phone is recongised by fastboot via a PC under SDK tools. Thats a start?

tell us how!?
pls, maybe somebody need your experience
Fixed by searching these forums. It seems that I'm too much of a novice to warrant specific responses and support. I had to do much of the digging myself. Took ages and to be hones, I forgot what I did. There was quite a few steps to go through and seveal iterations. Its finally working now.
Attempting to root my DINC2 (still running Froyo 2.2.1) via AlphaRev\Revolutionary Windows 0.4pre4 but getting "Failed-Go have some Lemonade" on the second boot into Hboot.
Phone’s HBoot Header still showing S-On. Is it because my phone doesn't have Gingerbread update?
If so, I tried to run Gingerbread RUU but getting another error (170).
Just to note, I made sure I connected in Charge Mode only, I enabled USB Debugging and I disabled Fastboot.
I would be really grateful for any assistance.
Just update from the phone. There are two OTAs that have been released after 2.2.1. Once you do that use revolutionary again. The newest revolutionary is for gingerbread incredible 2 only. I dont have the link for the old one...maybe someone else does?
I got it. Somebody else asked for it the other day.
Code:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OVF7AUG5
I cannot update via the phone (OTA) because carrier is not allowing update. I try the Software Update check and Check New but nothing comes through.
As for the link to the older revolutionary, thank you! But a follow-up question. Ususally in revolutionary you get a key from the web site after entering your serial #. How do I install it via this download link that you provided?
I have downloaded the zip and can extract it but wont I be prompted for the key?
Go to revolutionary.io same as normal to generate your beta key.
Another user in the gingerbread root guide thread used it with no problems.

OK. Will Do. Now If I already tried with the AlphaRev\Revolutionary Windows 0.4pre4 version (w/Gingerbread) can I use the same key from that attempt or start anew?
Last question, I promise.
Not sure. It would be best to start over. Just for good measure.

Then again. The worst that could happen is that it tells you the beta key is invalid. So its whichever you wanna do.
Sent from my HTC Droid Incredible 2 via the XDA app.
Both attempts 1) without generating a new key and 2) generating a new beta key both failed with "invalid beta key, aborting...". Any other thoughts? Appreciate your help.
Are you sure you properly put the beta key in?
Did you copy/paste the beta key? or did you manually type it?
Good question, I copied and paste. I will try to manually enter it as soon as I boot my daughter off the computer.
no go. Entered both beta keys manually. Both failed. I saw the thread where you shared the same download originally. I sent the person a private message to see what he did to make it work. Maybe I should try it on another computer?
Copy/paste is the recommended method.
You may want to contact lonati the other person that requested the froyo exploit.
Or try the Revolutionary irc chat. http://webchat.freenode.net/?channels=revolutionary

Another pc might work. I saw one person that had trouble getting it to work on Windows Vista.
Well visiting that IRC Chat was fun. NOT! Really a tough crowd there.
But what I was able to get out of their replies was to "Start Fresh" and "Download 0.4pre4 from http://revolutionary.io and generate a key there".
I will do both on my other computer tomorrow morning. Hopefully I will have better news tomorrow. I will update then and again thanks for your time. Tomorrow.
Sorry I couldn't be of more help. maybe starting completely over will get you rooted. Can you not bring your phone to a verizon store to have them manually update it? Then you should be good to go with a fresh gingerbread install.
Well, tried on a different computer but still no go. I sent a private message to lonati but no reply. I also tried the IRC Chat again and because of a "Newkeys" function in 0.4pre4, there is no way the newly generated Key will work on anything previous.
Im going to focus my efforts on getting the Gingerbread RUU update working. Everything works with that upo to a point when its trying to read the phone, then it comes back with a Error Code 170. If I can solve that then I can upgrade to Gingerbread then Root.
If you see this issue elsewhere please email me.
I haven't tested it but maybe you can update it using the RUU.exe Here: http://www.filefactory.com/file/ccf....01.0622_NV_VZW1.92_release_199487_signed.exe
It states that it will work for phones that are not rooted yet. Make sure you run it as administrator.
klabit87 I was able to get it installed. Another member suggested finding the ROM.ZIP file (while RUU install is running), rename it to PG32IMG.zip, put it on root of SD card, and turn off phone, hold vol down and power to get to fastboot and install the RUU.
That worked like a charm. Im in shock! Now I can root via Revolutionary once I finish enjoying this victory. Thank you so much for sticking with me. Every message made me feel more and more determined to get this done. THANK YOU.
And Thanks to everyone else who posted an idea.
Glad to hear you got everything working. I think I may have been just as determined as you. I knew about the ability to rip the zip from the temp folder but I didn't know it would flash with fastboot while you still have S-On. Have fun flashing your rooted DInc2!

Previously posted here but went unnoticed (with so many posts I didn't expect anyone to check regularly). I'm really sorry about this guys I know how much you hate people asking stupid questions but I really cant find the answer to this.
Hey everyone, hope someone can help me out, I've spent hours researching but this is one of those problems where I can't seem to find anyone with the same problem; basically I installed wallet using the old ZIP method, after removing it I found out I had to change files to be able to install the new APK method so I followed those instructions on this thread however I am not getting a weird error saying
"Hardware Not Supported"
"Sorry, this device is not yet supported. We are working too add support. Please check Market later for Updates."
Is anyone else having this problem or am I the only one?

EDIT: Just realized I posted this in the wrong place. Can Mod's move or delete this and I'll create another one in Q&A?
Should I just used the Zip method again, the main reason I wanted to switch is that I'm not sure if that method received updates.
I don't know if this helps however the VERY few (around 2-3 incidents) where I have seen this happen to other Gnex user's all had the LTE version however mine is GSM
