You can flash the froyo ruu. Temp-root then write the froyo hboot and update to gingerbread.

That method has only been tested and confirmed after using the AlphaRevX S-Off method for Froyo. There has been no confirmation as to whether the method at Rootzwiki would work the same for those of us that used the Revolutionary exploit for Gingerbread. It would be nice if somebody would test it though. I'm not brave enough.

Since AlphaRev worked with Revolutionary for the new exploit, it's a pretty safe bet the same method would work. Additionally, Hboot didn't change between 2.2 and 2.3, the issue preventing AlphaRev from working initially was simply being able to get temp root on Gingerbread. One they were able to get temp root, there would be no reason to change AlphaRev's original Hboot S-off process in any way.

That what I am thinking too. But this is my only phone right now and I don't want to risk any complications. I would like to be 100% sure that it will work.

I hear 'ya, I'd be happy to test it out but I'm tied up with some work ATM, and I did the original s-off with AlphaRev, so I'd have to undo that, upgrade to GB, s-off again using Revolutionary and then undo THAT one, and then of course, redo it to get back to where I am now!!
If no one has done it by the time I find some free time, I'll do it and report back.

Thank you so much! That would be greatly appreciated! And in the meantime I will keep an eye out on the other forums to see if anybody else may have tested and I will let you know.

[Q] Unrooted: Why still S-OFF?

I just unrooted my phone by running the RUU update for 3.29.xxx and at bootloader screen, it is still showing S-OFF. Shouldn't it be S-ON? I'd appreciate some feedback as I am heading back to the sprint store and want to be sure the phone is completely unrooted. I recall the other time I ran this same procedure, it went back to S-ON.
TIA
You need to flash the Unrevoked s-on tool. It can be found in several unrooting threads.

Thanks. I suspect it was the tool I used to root that had the Unrevoked component (never had this problem first time around); should've read the fine print...

so you need to re-root (maybe with unrevoked even) and then flash the s-on tool through recovery. it can be found in the unrevoked wiki. after that, then run the ruu.

Yup.... exactly. Thanks.....highly appreciated. I guess this explains why most prefer not to use the Unrevoked method.

glad i could help. another reason people dont like unrevoked is it is now outdated. if you run it with the new protected hboot 2.02, you will get screwed pretty bad.
it used to save people hours of struggle, now it kills ruthlessly (haha)
Just flash this as PC36IMG.zip:
http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/RUU_...0.09.01_NV_1.77_003_release_154209_signed.zip

Does this downgrade HBOOT to .76.2000? If not, please list the exact steps + files to use. I have copies of Hboot_0.76.2000.zip and Hboot_2.02.0001-Patch but not sure of the other in which to flash them.
Thanks.
EDIT: I was able to get back S-ON, although I observed that bootloader doesn't show the updated value after flashing the unrevoked-s-on zip; not until you attempt to flash the stock PC36IMG file. The above RUU allowed me complete the unrooting process (now with hboot 2.02).
I guess the other pressing question is why do I need hboot 2.02 and not .93 or .76.2000?

[Q] NewB needs Help installing Rom =(

Ok.. so I'm absolutely new to this rooting and flashing roms and stuff. I want to install the SkyRaider 4.0 ROM. I believe the first step I need to do before I can install this ROM is to root my phone? Do I do this through Unrevoked or through ADB??? Like in this link? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=709220 . I checked the WIKI for DInc and it doesn't mention anything about ADB.. So do I need to do that??
So lost. Thanks so much for your help guys
Use the unrevoked program, its so simple, literally one click. Once you have root you'll want to make a backup in recovery before you flash skyraider.

Thanks. So what's up with ADB? Will I need it at all? Do I need to follow the guide as in the link I posted above?
First root using the unrevoked program as mentioned above. Then post back for more help on the ROM flashing.
I wouldn't worry about adb right now. Don't need to use it for rom, kernel, radio flashing.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Honestly, I've never even had to use ADB. Definitely not required. It's nice to have sometimes. But usually something like root explorer will suffice.
*should have refreshed first.

Gotcha. So what's the diff between Unrevoked 3 and unrevoked forever? http://unrevoked.com/#inc
Unrevoked forever gives you permanent root. That is definitely the way to go, and the best way to get your ROM successfully flashed. ( And stay that way ).
Also let's you flash unsigned files in hboot, like radios and splash screens.
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Just thought I'd add that you can also go back to stock S-ON later on if needed (warranty replacement, etc).

And in case he doesn't know what S-ON and S-OFF means, it refers to the state of the security "flag" on your device. With S-OFF, your warranty is void, however you can turn the security back on as well if you need to take it into verizon or something.. Using unrevoked forever, it will turn S-ON to S-OFF.
Can SkyRaider work with S-ON? aka without dealing with Unrevoked Forever at the moment?
No, I don't believe it will. Is there a reason not to do unrevoked forever? It take less than 5 minutes to complete

You should be able to. S-OFF is the way to go through, you can still revert S-ON later.
The whole "security" title it has is meaningless against actually security of your phone, with S-OFF you're more free to tweak your phone.

Unrevoked for the Inc comes with Forever already, hence S-off

S-OFF is not required to flash ROMs. Its required for radio flashing and splash screen changing though.

I see, but I hadn't done unrevoked forever (yet I still had root) and flashed over my first ROM... didn't have much luck. It ended up reverting to stock everything automatically, which was really strange. Haven't had any problems since S-OFF though.
Well, I did both unrevoked3 and forever in the end. Got it up and running with skyraider now =) thanks for all your help guys!

Huh, thats odd. I was rooted and S-ON when I first did my starter ROM: SkyRaider 2.something lol. Didn't encounter any problems except for wonky audio with flash, but that was an easy fix. That was back when stock Incs were rockin' Eclair lol... Sorry bout my off topic reminiscing :S
I'm glad you got everything running good OP! Enjoy the wonderful world of the rooted Incredible!

Yeah, S-OFF isn't required for ROM's. I flashed many ROM's before S-OFF was even out for the incredible. Back in the 2.1 days

I wasn't able to download it before either I and was able to get it off filecrop.com. Give that a try, just search for unrevoked....

You may have to install the Android driver manually. I had to when I rooted my Incredible. For some reason when Unrevoked tried to do it, it failed. But it installed fine when I ran the standalone driver installer.
Does unrevoked work with the Gingerbread update? I am getting a replacement phone from Verizon tomorrow and I am sure it will come with 2.3.4 on it and want to make sure I will be able to root it again.

You can root with it but you cannot achieve s-off. To get s-off back you will need to downgrade first to 2.2 gain root and s-off then upgrade to a gb based ROM.
Here is the thread you wanna read:

[Q] Anyone ever had problems with Revolutionary?

Hey-
I want to S-OFF my phone but I am a little cautious towards doing it, and want to see if anyone has ever had any problems?(Brick/bad flashes etc)

No issues what so ever mate.
When I found this method it was a god send, worked first time on my first attempt at rooting.
I have since flashed RUU's and revolutionary sticks around so no need to re-do this method.
Message me if u want a full guide
No..everything works fine for me.
I didn't have any problems, just read the instructions though
(got my instructions from www.theunlockr.com)

nope ! never had problems. let the revolutionary do its thing and your next step is flashing the rom you want..
No problems whatsoever, just get the right drivers, and do what it tells you to do.

No but i remember having to run through unrevoked again after flashing an RUU. Possibly to add root/SU app again as i think the RUU i used removed the super user ninja app. But Revolutionary stayed on the HBOOT screen. And unrevoked took like 2 mins to complete
make sure ur RUU is version 2.1 or lower in order to use unrevoked tho
No, at the end it will ask you if you want to root your phone as well, not a big deal
I had... because I installed a 2.2.1 froyo rom, and due to that, i was unable to reinstall newers rom versions. It kept the S-OFF, but kind off "broken". The problem was solved, using this tutorial! hope it will help U.

I just Rooted it yesterday and had no problems with S-off or root.

[Q] Just took the ota update. Is it too late to root my One?

I updated to Kit Kat this morning. What are the necessary steps for me to gain root? I haven't rooted a phone since my Droid X, so I might be out of the loop on some things. Thanks for any help!!!
So why would you take the update before asking this
Sent from my HTC One VZW using Tapatalk 4
You can still root it. If you go into RUU mode, flash one of the older system RUU's, then get s-off before updating. You pretty much gave yourself a **** ton more steps to do it, but yes, you can.
This link has the info to flash back to an older version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216&highlight=s-on
You won't need the s-on / lock part of that, but you will probably need to flash one of those old system images, then use rumrunner to get s-off and unlocked, then you can update to 4.4, then flash a recovery.
Use firewater-soff.com. Use the temp root method.

If you are s-on hboot will not allow you to flash an older ruu version than you are currently on (downgrade). So that wont work. But as stated in the post above firewater will get you bootloader unlocked and s-off.
