[Q] GPS Problem with HTC Phones in Upstate NY? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

There seems to be a problem where some HTC phones in upstate New York are reporting their location to be Gazost, France. I'm experiencing it on my phone (details in sig) and my girlfriend is having the same problem on her stock/unrooted incredible (both in Syracuse). I googled it and it looks like a few people on Yahoo Answers are having the same problem http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110818161956AA9gHNS
Has anyone else heard of this? or have any ideas on what to do about it?

I am having the same problem -- HTC Incredible, Upstate NY. I just talked to a Verizon tech support rep who said that they are getting calls about this issue. They stated that it is something wrong with the Android OS for certain phone manufacturers and that they (Verizon) contacted Google and Google is "looking into it". To monitor other people's discussions, here are a few other posts I've bookmarked:

I am having the same problem in the Albany, NY area.
The sad part is I thought I screwed up the next release of my 3.0 ROM with the latest kernel or something until I found a thread about this on one of the sites linked above. I even went back to prior versions and even the stock November OTA.
The part that bugs me the most is I spent hours wasting my time trying to fix it

Yeah this is a real pain in the butt. I spent hours re-flashing to different roms I new worked before. I tried pure shooter which I freakin love but thought it had GPS problems, turns out its Verizon. I hope this gets resolved soon. I called them yesterday so we'll have to see.

This fix worked for me.
download "GPS test" app; put your phone in airplane mode; make sure wifi is off, go into gps test, go to menu-> settings - hit clear AGPS a couple times, wait a few minutes, hit update AGPS a couple times, wait; i then went into navigation with wifi off let it sit for awhile; backed out turned on wifi and went back into nav and it worked. Went into GPS test and it picked up my long&lat as well as a few GPS sat's.turned off airplane mode went into nav again and it still worked.

Thanks for the help... I found this fix and it worked for me: http://phandroid.com/2011/08/22/ver...-weve-got-a-temporary-fix-for-you-forum-talk/
It seems to be pretty much what you did except a little simpler (no waiting, no doing things "a couple times," and no "update AGPS")

http://twitter.com/#!/demarcmj/status/105710726299123712
here's hoping that the twitter hashtag #upstateNYVerizonHTCGPSpocolypse catches on. Ha

I cant get either one to work.

Some Motorola users on Verizon were having issues with this as well (have a friend with a Droid and another with Droid 2). According to some other forums, the issue seems to be resolved as of yesterday evening/this morning. My friend with the Droid has her GPS working again (confirmed 15min ago). Haven't heard back from the Droid 2 user yet.

[Q] Wi-Fi Error

Please Help. I have had my Inc for about 3 months now and have tried different ROMs. Today I noticed that my phone was not connected to my Wi-Fi at work. When I try to enable Wi-Fi the only thing it says is "error." At first I thought it was mabye the ROM, restored from a back up from a different rom a couple days ago, still get error when enabling Wi-Fi.
CWM 3.0.0.8
hboot -0.92.0000
radio-2.15.00.07.28
ROMS Kingdom Stock Sense 3.0 Rls 1.1 and IncRom 1.6
Do you think my Wi-Fi is broken all together or should I try to upgrade my radio, or try some other solution?
Can your phone not connect to ANY wifi network or just this one in particular?
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
Will not connect to any. Wi-Fi can will not enable. Every time I try it says "Turning on..." for several seconds and then says "Error" and Wi-Fi is still unchecked. When I try to enable Wi-Fi Tether for Root is fails and instructes me to check log. The log is as follows:
Loading bcm4329.ko module (fw_bcm4329_apsta.bin from /etc/ firmware)...failed
Starting access-point...failed
Activating WiFi interface...failed
Enabling NAT rules...done
Enabling IP forwarding...done
Tethering now running...done
My laptop can not connect or see my phone to tether to it. Yes it has before.
I'd think that it sounds like a hardware issue if it was working before, but it can't hurt to try a different radio. TBH I haven't really heard of many other situations like yours, wish I could think of something...

Thank you for the help. I think I will restore it to bone stock, take it to Verizon and see what they can do. My last Inc thay would not help with but sent to PCD where these phones are refurbished for HTC, they replaced the mother board and sent it back. Took 4 weeks though.
Well just restored phone to complete stock, still no Wi-Fi. Looks like I will be visiting Verizon on my lunch.
Well after several minutes at Verizon and them determining that yes there was indeed a problem with my Dinc, they warrantied it out and sent me a new refurb. Got that one yesterday. Got the phone activated, played with it for a while. When I went to lunch I really put it to use. Watching a short 15 min video the phone got warm and rebooted. And then rebooted again. When the phone finally powered up to a workable state I let it sit and cool down. Today for me lunch I decided to get it to reboot cycle again. Yep it did, took to Verizon which is about 20 min away and the entire trip it would keep rebooting. By the time I got to the store it would only boot up to the HTC Incredible screen until I pulled the battery and tried again. Still only HTC Incredible screen. Showed the sales rep, another one on the way. This will be my 4th phone since March of this year. I love the phone but if I can't get one that works it doesn't do much good.

[Q] GPS Not detecting any satellites

Okay, recently I had an issue where on my Evo the GPS would not detect any satellites at all. When I use applications that require the gps such as google maps and gps status the gps icons blinks indicating it's in use, but I never get any signal. On gps status no satellites show up. Currently I'm using sense 4.22 rom, I also tried with 4.24 and cyanogenmod and still no luck. I also tried the sense fix with the ##gpsclx# (something like that I think) and still no luck. Any suggestions?
have you tried that yet?

Okay I'm going to try that right now

Okay tried one of the drivers, still didn't work, I'm going to try wiping everything and re-installing the 4.22 rom
I've run into the same problem myself.
I've been switching between cm7 nightlies and mik's. Initially things worked just fine, but in the last day it won't get a lock. All I get is a flashing gps icon.
Tried the different drivers floating around, gpsclrx, etc. Not sure what to do at this point either.
Yeah, I just completely wiped everything and installed a fresh rom and still nothing...could the radio's have something to do with it?
I did that too.. No go.
I restored a sense rom, did a profile update, reboot.
Surprisingly, that seemed to work. Trying all the other things, I never did the profile update. So who knows... ymmv.. Good luck!
Btw, if you're on an airave, turn that off if you can when doing the profile update.
Okay thanks I'll try that.
If you don't know what it is, you don't have one.
An airave is sprint's version of a femtocell. A mini tower that uses your cable/dsl connection and broadcasts a low power cell signal. Used for areas of no/weak signal.

Okay so I just tried it, and rebooted multiple times but still a no go. What version of sense did you do it on?
I actually restored back to mik's 2.1 rom. Any sense should work though. Of course, as screwed up as this is, it could have very well been coincidence?
Hmmmm....okay, I think I'll try going back to a froyo rom and see if that works

Okay I don't know I'm about fed up with this. I have tried everything and nothing works. The GPS simply won't pick up signal!!!
Okay just another update, still nothing is working still says searching for GPS none of the Gps apps pick up signal, could this be a hardware issue?
Lol, okay I know I am practically talking to myself, but I just remembered something. About 2 weeks ago I went to the Sprint service center to have my back camera lens replaced. However, I haven't used the gps for a few days after that, but later that week, I noticed that it wasn't working when using my jogging app on the phone. So today I read online that someone else was having gps issue also, and it was the fact that a little connection in their gps antenna came loose. It could possibly be that while repairing it, they accidentally knocked out one of the connections to the gps antenna. I think I'll head over there tomorrow.
Good luck!
Evo HW 003
MIUI 1.6.17
Okay so I just got back from the sprint store. I told the guy about my problem. At first he insisted it was working because in Google maps it shown my location but then I informed him it was just satellite signal. Lol so anyway..after about 20 minutes they decided it just didn't work, they're ordering a replacement phone which should be in, in about a week. Lol fun stuff
Glad you're getting it resolved.
As for me, anytime I have the device connected to the airave, the gps fails to acquire any satellite signal. As soon as I kill the airave and the phone connects to a tower, gps returns. This was not the case before, but the airave has been troublesome more times than not.
Practically however, you're obviously going to make use of the gps when not home, so it's somewhat of a moot point.
Lol yeah...well at least hopefully the replacement phone will work well...now..I just have to deal with rootig that
Okay another update my phone came in early, and the GPS on this one works!!!!!! Yay!!! Lol..now i'm just waiting for a root method hahaha

Anyone in the NYC area have working GPS?

I have been having terrible GPS. It either won't lock in or if it does (on Google Navigation) i get the large blue circle around the nav arrow indicating that it won't lock in. I tried GPS Status and it helps a little but it by no means solved the problem. I also tried the app FASTER LOCK that supposedly helps the GPS lock in faster but it does not work either. I also tried the thread in the DEV section with the flashable zip. All of the above was done on Calkulin's and then after a fresh ODIN to stock rooted EL29 ROM.
After exhausting all these options I actually called SPRINT. They advised me that they are doing some maintenance on the antenna or satellites or some nonsense and say the ETA for the fix is 2/1/12. This service is supposed to be in the BKLYN/Queens and part of Manhattan area. In a nutshell I want to know if any of you NYers have experienced any problems with the GPS working properly. Please let me know because this is driving me F'n nuts and I don't really take Sprints word about these "repairs"

Mine too, but I almost never use GPS. I remember trying a while back and it wouldn't work (I'm not outside right now, so I can't try). I live in Bay Ridge and work in Manhattan and go to college in Staten Island.
I don't trust Sprint about any "upgrades" they claim to be doing. Since last January, they told me they were doing "upgrades" to fix 3G data speeds, and mine are still garbage. Better than they used to be but still garbage.
thanks for the input Fred. This nonsense is really pissing me off! Everything works great on this phone except for this GPS. The funny thing is that I don't use it that often but when I do use it I want and need it to work properly. There is nothing worst than being on the highway relying on Google Nav to get you to your destination and all of a sudden you get a "GPS single lost" notification.
Hopefully this gets straightened out one way or another
...i just took mine back yesturday to get a new phone mailed to me in the next couple days...apparently its a global gps issue meaning all e4gt have it at least the first batch...i got mine in october and my gps worked here in ny for awhile but recently same problems you described...most ppl report having better luck with a new phone...yours should b covered under warrenty so you get it for free...well ive heard some have to pay 35bucks unless you have insurance...id advise taking it to sprint and complain and demand a new phone...if rooted just make sure you remove root and if on custom rom make sure u go back to stock

So should we stay away from any specific sirial number? because i've tried the flashable zip and i still dont get a GPS lock... (Charlotte NC)
Running Calk's 2.8.1 and gunslinger 1.4.1 w/ gpsfix.zip
It is indeed with a lot of people. I have the same issue for a long time. I just recently got a new phone via insurance cause I lost my old one. It still has GPS lock issues. I can't say if it is a new model however.
What works for me (TO A POINT) is turning Wifi on for it to narrow down. Its really upsetting because I have my old Evo next to me and it gets GPS locks no problem. It is an issue with the phone.
I know that I have good company in regards to this problem. To illustrate my point I went to a Sprint corporate store in Brooklyn today and asked him about this GPS situation. To be honest he didn't know his ass from his elbow but the only upside was that he has the Epic 4G as his personal phone so I asked him to step outside of the store with me and open NAVIGATION and then MAP to see if it locks on. Sure enough, his phone wouldn't get a lock either.
Too make a long story short it seems that this phone has messed up GPS or maybe Sprints network in my area really is undergoing some repairs. Whatever the case is it is very irritating to me. I sold my NUVI GPS because my old EVO had some kickAss GPS but this phone has been a nightmare. I'm going to give it a few more days and call SPRINT again. I'm not going to be stuck with a phone w/o working GPS for another 1 3/4 years!
The thing is that GPS has nothing to do with network. Even if something was wrong with the towers and you couldn't use network location to pin you onto the map, GPS itself is totally independent and should work. Maybe it's the LTE rollout?

Your guess is as good as, if not better than mine considering you do tech work on Sprint phones. All I know is that the day is going to come when I need to get somewhere by car and the fact that I can't rely on my "award winning smartphone" to get me there pisses me off.
You bring up a point that I am interested in. Like you mentioned, I thought that our GPS signal is directly related to the GPS satellites and the only thing data is needed for is to load the maps. In theory we should be able to use a NAVIGATION type app w/o data at all if the full map was installed to our phone and we have satellites for the GPS?
Does Sprint have their own GPS satellites or does everyone on the planet use the same one? I have no idea how that kind of thing works.

GPS isn't touched by Sprint. Another thing you can try, in case it IS the phone trying to pick up your location by the tower, is to turn off network location and only use GPS. See if you can get a lock like that.
PS I don't work at Sprint anymore; my boss was a total douchebag pothead.

BUMP!
I can't believe that with all of the prior issues, that we have yet another basic device function that DOES NOT WORK. What's weird, is that it seemed that there was a time when it DID work ok, but tonight I used it for the first time while navigating (kept my in-dash GPS on for comparison), and this thing could not find it's way out of a box. Even when there was a GPS lock and I was driving on a highway (in NJ), it had me on back roads and was spewing nonsense directions.
I also have GPS Stats, and all of the other suggested 'fixes' installed, and this is just plain broken. I was on all EL29, though recently my Kernel was moved to EL26. I'm going to go back to EL29, but I seriously doubt that will help.
If anyone has more information on this, please share.

Is my GPS broken? (running stock jellybean) - UPDATE see post 6

Ive had my phone for about 2 weeks now, and the GPS is basically unusable. It takes up to 5 mins to get a lock, and sometimes it just never gets one. Even when it does, its not very accurate.
Ive read somewhere that the upgrade to jellybean caused this, and ive been running JN since i owned it, so maybe thats my problem? Anyone else experience this issue? Anyway to test if its just the software?
Id like to figure it out, so if i have to send my phone back i can. Thanks.
I think the Jellybean connection was more coincidental than anything else, since a lot of people were having GPS issues (on both ICS and JB ROMs) around the time that the JB OTA began rolling out.
Try disabling "Google's location service" in the location services setting and see if that helps. If it works, then try reenabling it and try again. That seemed to resolve the issues of most people who were having GPS issues a few weeks ago.

With it enabled, i just get the huge circle, and it says my location is somewhere in there. With it disabled, i get "waiting for location", and then "your current location is temporarily unavailable."
Anything else i can try. Like i said before it works, but maybe 1 out of 10 times. Even if it worked half the time it would be useless. If i cant depend on it then its really not worth anything to me.
Try this GPS fix. It worked like a champ for me and many other people.

im not rooted.
Ok i just called google play, and asked what i should do. He suggested i do what ive already done (check and uncheck google services, factory reset), both of which had no effect on my GPS. He then told me that a fix should be coming out within the next few weeks, and it should fix it on all devices.
So right now im debating flashing a custom ROM like AOKP or something to see if that fixes it. Im a little worried about doing this to a phone that may be faulty in the first place though. Should i even bother, or should i just wait the few weeks for a fix. If googles OTA fix doesnt fix it back to google it goes.
another update: GPS now works (not sure what made it start), but it still takes forever to lock, and is extremely inaccurate. Usually when you use nav, itll tell you when a turn is coming etc, but the gps thought i was over 100yds behind were i actually was. Even when im in my house, it has no idea where i am, closest it can get in down to 3 houses wide.
Im having flashbacks to my captivate - which didnt work at all - but if a gps only works sometimes and when it does doesnt work very good - then its basically worthless. Am i really going to trust it when i need it?
GPS status from Google play store. Install it and let it download agps data. That should greatly increase accuracy and decrease lock time. You don't need root to use it.
Hope it helps

[Q] GPS Not Connecting...

I am on my 3rd GS3. The issue I am having is that my Navigation programs (default and telenav) will search and search for satellites, but won't connect. But when I restart my phone, it will work fine for a day or two then back to no connection.
I have spoken to Sprint and this is an unreported problem... until me. So, Sprint will replace my device. I am unrooted and completely stock. I know that Sprint is in Nashville, TN working on installing the 4gLTE towers. It isn't live yet, but they will turn on and off periodically.
I have searched these threads and I have not heard of any others with this issue. My first GS3 was rooted, but I have not done the two replacements. This has only occurred on an unrooted device.
Has anyone heard of this issue and know a resolution? I am considering rooting again to see if that is a fix. This is not a horrible issue, it is much better than a device that won't boot, but any help is greatly appreciated.

Currently Rooted running the people's rom (3.06) GPS works flawlessly. I have tested and used Scout (By Telenav) Telenav, and Google Maps with no issues at all (tested in FL, MS, And parts of AL during my drive there and back) Haven't had any issues tho.
Mine worked fine while unrooted but started not initializing for startup apps that needed it after i rooted it. I would have to go to the app directly for it to start the GPS. Otherwise the app would continuously look for location. Unfortunately I haven't been able to narrow it down to any one Rom or kernel. Any one else with this issue?

I have the same issue but haven't been able to figure out the cause either. Notice it mostly when I set my destination from my house, and wifi connected, then change location after leaving, and phone has kicked over to 3G.

Before I returned my phone for another replacement, I decided to delete all of the apps that I had downloaded. I then rebooted my phone. After 2 days, it worked fine. I then began installing apps one by one. I figured the problem had to be app specific and only apps that use gps. There was one of two apps I decided was the culprit: Facebook or JuiceDefender. I installed Facebook and it worked fine for 2 days. Ample time for the issue to appear. I have figured out that all along JuiceDefender is the problem. It is shutting off GPS like it is supposed to, but not turning it on when it is supposed to. The problem started when I reverted to stock and took the OTA Android update. I am just embarrassed that it took until now to look at the apps as the problem and not the phone. I am going to contact JD and let them know what I have found. I hope there can be a fix, JD really works well... except for my gps!
Anyways, look at apps first as the problem child before running to a repair shop (like I did!) .
Hope this helps others...

JD is designed to disable data connection to conserve battery, You can set it for a threshold where it will keep the connection alive if it's transmitting information back and forth.. (Must have Ultimate for that i believe) So if your disabling the data connection, then it'll kill GPS.
It is set on balanced. That is why I didn't think of juice defender first. Never had this issue until android updated.

I am having the same problem. My GPS will work, but for me, it's only for about 15 mins or so (while in an App that starts it). Then, if I stay in the app, it will just lose connection. If I exit the App, and the GPS turns off, then when I go back it, it will not turn on again. It isn't like it is searching and it doesn't get a signal...it never turns on. The only thing to bring it back is to reboot. I noticed it while on a custom ROM (TPR) and thought it must be that, so I flashed back to stock. Still the same thing. I then tried doing a factory reset. Still not working properly. Anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks in advance.

I took it in to Sprint they said it was the bad antenna and will give me a refurbish phone. This phone is less than a month old and why I will take a refurbish phone. Like I bought a brand new car and come in for a fix and they took me to the use car lot for a factory certificated car.
So I sent to Samsung and they claimed replacing a part and got the phone back, same problem is still happening.
Anyone can help us on this. It seems a common issue to a few of us.
Here is a simple GPS fix that works well.
