I'm using the EvoV8 RevA froyo build. I'm using Bettercut to replace my home screen shortcut icons and for the most part it's working fine. When I try and replace my "Contacts" application icon I get the error "Application not installed on phone" when I try and launch it. I'm trying to circumvent that problem by using App Organizer to change the icon but all that application seems to want to do is group apps into a folder. I just want a single custom icon representing my "Contacts" application on my home screen, not a folder that contains the "Contacts" app inside it. Anyone have anyway to achieve this knowing the Bettercut has problems with this particular application?
Im having the same issue with some apps. everyone told me use FloderOrganizer and that works better imo

i wanted to do the same thing. i couldn't get it working, but i can't call myself an android expert either. but i think this method SHOULD work
1) download the rom and unzip it in windows
2) unzip the stock Contacts.apk
3) go to /res/drawable-hdpi/
4) find the icon
5) adb pull Contacts.apk from your phone
6) replace the original icon with the one from the stock rom
7) re-zip the file
8) adb rm Contacts.apk from phone
9) adb push edited Contacts.apk to phone.
obviously a nandroid backup before all of this is fairly important. if anyone else can confirm that this would work that would be helpful. i wanted the stock Contacts & Camera icons and ran into the same error you did.
You guys need to get Folder Organizer. Once I got it, I uninstalled both BetterCut and AppOrganizer. It's way better.
Cheers...

Okay...you don't need to remove the contacts.apk....when you push the new one to your phone it automatically replaces the old one. So there is a step or two less......
Are you renaming the new icon the same name as your old icon? Also....are you keeping the exact same size, example 72x72 pixels is app icon size for the EVO.
Hey all,
Just thought I'd chuck this quick guide together for those of you who think the new messaging application on the SGS II is a bit naff, and you''d prefer the one from Cyanogen Mod 7.
Firstly, you'll need the file I've attached to the bottom of this post called Mms.apk.
This guide is for beginners who don''t know ADB, so for this we''ll be using root explorer. For this. You will require root and to have purchased Root explorer from the market (It's only a few quid and very handy!)
So, here we go.
Backing up original Mms.apk
1. Copy the file you downloaded here (Mms.apk) to the root of your SD card.
2. Unmount your SDCard from your PC.
3. Open up root explorer. At the top, hit the option where it says ""Mount R/W". If you've done this, it should change to saying "Mount R/O""
4. Go into the following folders. System --> Apps
5. Scroll down until you see Mms.apk. Select it, and hold for a few seconds.
6. You'll now be prompted with a box. Select "Rename"
7. We want to back-up the original app in case you want to revert. so rename it "mms.apk.bak" and press OK.
8. Select the file again, holding as we were before. Now select, Move. You''ll see we have some options appear at the bottom, ignore them for now.
9. Now hit the back key on your SGSII until you''re back at root (Displays in top left as :/
10. Scroll down until you see the folder, Sdcard and select it.
11. Now, we need to use the options at the bottom. Now we're in our sdcard, select the open "paste"or move"".
12. You'll see that we now have mms.apk.bak on our SDcard
You'll want to repeat this process for the mms.odex file that was located in system/apps as well.
Well done!
Installing the new one
Basically, it's the oppisite of what we did before.
1.Select the new mms.apk from your SD card. Select "move"
2.Hit the back key, going back to root directory.
3.Go to the Systems folder, then apps.
4. Hit the "paste"of "move" button.
5. Scroll down to Mms.apk and select it by tapping once. It will now go through the install process.
Note: Make sure you have the unknown sources box ticked to allow install. If not, you''ll be prompted to change it before continuing install.
Voila - you have backed up your original Mms.apk and have the CM7 Message application installed!
If you've found this guide helpful, please don't forget to hit the "thanks" button.
That's cool. I'm yet to get this phone but it feels good that hacking has already begun.
opps wrong thread sorry
A great improvement in my mind!

Can someone please update screenshots of this ? I have looked all over and I can't see it anywhere :/
wrong section but Id like to know if this would work on the galaxy s 4g (awaiting a tmobile version of s2),
and also if someone could post a few screenies
Cheers for the post but I have a 'mute' symbol above 'Compose'
Done how do I do this with any market app? Go SMS installed but didn't replace the system mms.apk
I renamed it..does anything else need to be done to make it a system app?

I'd also quite like a screenie as I quite like the default one, but always looking for improvements!
Sample screenie.
Way much better than the stock messaging app.
Lost the Messages icon on the home screen ... any idea how to get it back?

Brilliant! Anyway we can invert the colours so we get white text on black background?
EDIT:
Worked fine for about 2 mins, then all of my contacts disappeared, then Messaging FC'd, rebooted and Messaging keeps FC'ing
You either didn't remove the .odex from system/apps or you didn't click Mms.apk afterwards to install it. Until you install it, you will get a force close.
I tested it on all of the latest firmwares, and it works just as I'd expect.
Thanks alot dude, been waiting for the CM7 messaging app to be released or working on this phone.
Just tested it now with your very in-depth instructions and its working fine.
Works fine for me except I can't see my avatar on my own messages. It's not a big problem but it looks weird...
Any idea ?
edit : That and the "New message" icon is actually a mute icon (a little speaker with an "X").
this is mint! no irritating iphone style bubbles, black back ground nice and simple! Also not having delivery reciepts come in as new notifications just as a tick is awesome. just put the cyanogen music player on too. Porting CM7 one app at a time. love it!
Hmm.. when I rebooted my phone I need to reinstall the mms.apk again. How do I make it permanent? I mean without the need to reinstall again after a reboot?.
Using the method described I had no such probs after reboot. Make sure you rename both the apk and odex files during the install.

Thanks
This looks like just what I was after. Will be trying this as soon as I get home today. I was just wondering if there was any way to do something similar with the calendar and contacts/dialler app, as these are the only other bits of touchwiz that I can't seem to get rid of just by swapping launcher.
The original thread with the files is located here
Basically this will allow your Android phone to display Softbank Emoji encoding. This is not limited to just your text messages, but will also allow applications to display emojis that people have in their profiles or whatever.
Things needed before you install:
1)Root Explorer (from the Market) You can use a different file explorer app, but it must be able to mount your system folder as read/write
2)A program that can open a 7z file (you can find that online here The file that is provided is compressed with 7z format. There is probably an app that can extract that on the market, but I haven't looked for it.
3)Your phone MUST be rooted!!!
To install:
1)Download the droidsansfallback.7z file to your computer
2)Uncompress the file and move the droidsansfallback.ttf to your SDCard somewhere
3)Go /system/fonts with root explorer
4)Click "Mount R/W" at the top
5)Long-press on Droidsansfallback.ttf and click delete and then Yes to confirm
7)Navigate back to where you placed the droidsansfallback.ttf
8)Long-press on droidsansfallback.ttf and click "Move"
9)Go back to /system/fonts
10)Click "Paste" at the bottom
You're done!
moved, this is belong more into Theme-ing than Development
Make sure you give permission 644 or rw-r--r--

Hybrid roms have a bug in their stock keyboard. You cannot type alphabets in it's 9key keyboard. It registers them as numbers. So there is a fix for this.Follow my tutorial for the fix.
1.Go through the thread below and download the file 'Flashable-Deodexed.zip'.Give credit to the dev created it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1433071
2.Now using root explorer copy your current keyboard from system/app/AxT9IME.apk and paste it somewhere on your sd card.
3.Now go into cwm recovery and flash the zip file you have downloaded before.
4.Check whether the keyboard works now.It should work now.
Proceed to next step only if you are not satisfied with the current keyboard.
5.If you are not satisfied with the keyboard you got, just like me(the keys are not very clear and not pleasing to the eye) there is a way to make your backed up keyboard work.
6.Using root explorer push the AxT9IME.apk you backed up on your sd to system/app and set the permission to rw-r--r-- and reboot the phone.
Voila! now you will have a working stock keyboard.
If you have any problem do let me know..
And please note that this works only in Hybrid roms.
sent while doin' some burnouts
I recently was running the Amoled Blue theme for Paronoid Android and found out that there was a issue with the Phone.apk. the issue I was having was that when I received a phone call, I was not able to answer since the answer and ignore buttons were bunched up.
The fix is you need to use a file explorer (I use the one from Rom Toolbox) navigate to system -> app -> find and delete the Phone.apk.
Next go to SDCard -> Download -> look for the original Paronoid Android zip folder. Click on it. Go to system ->app -> click on Phone.apk. and then Extract. Take note to where your file explorer stores the apk file (mine made a Extracted folder) look for the Phone.apk. Copy the folder and then paste the Phone.apk into the system folder of your current rom (which should be the AMoLED BLUE Theme) then to the app folder and paste it.
Last you have to fix permissions and set them to rw-r--r--. There you go. Problem fixed.
This worked for me. Hope this helps.
can you attach the phone.apk here ? :highfive:

Hey sorry for the late reply. There is the phone.apk file. All you have to do is download it and edit the permissions to rw-r--r-- and place into the system/app folder. I have taken a screenshot so you can see how to set the permissions. Hope this helps
