[Q] Hardware troubleshooting - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So basically I have gone through a lot with this phone.
I flashed it to boost mobile, the screen then cracked. Bought a new digitizer, broke the frame, bought a new frame with digitizer, and then broke the LCD Strip, so bought a new LCD.
Now the digitizer is dirty on the inside **REALLY DIRTY** i think the glue or something spread around it i dont know. Or it could been me when I wiped it with Windex.
Now also the headpiece (i dont know what to call it, but from where you listen in a call) does not work. Speaker and headphone jack work.
So basically my question is, should I buy another digitizer and fix it? And how will I fix the headpiece?
Or should I just buy another Incredible?

[Q] Broken Screen

I recently replaced just the broken glass screen on my evo. When I turned it on now, the screen is all black now. I hear it still working, I hear SMS and phone calls, but cant see anything. I didnt replace the entire LCD just the clear part. When I was prying the clear screen off, it was sticking to the lcd, which also was cracked. So I got the screen off but the other part came with it. I dont know if it was connected to the LCD and it was broken off or if its ok seperated. Its just the dark looks like tinted glass that goes directly over the LCD and under the clear screen (digitizer). So, can anyone tell me if maybe I damaged the LCD screen.
Thanks in advance.
So before replacing the glass/digitizer, the lcd still worked fine? Based on your description it sounds like the lcd. You may just have a loose ribbon connection...have you tried redoing the ribbons?
I'm about to dive into the same mission. Thinking twice about it now.....
Yes the glass was broken for about 1 month but it still worked fine the LCD was working. I've tried reconnecting the ribbons various times also tried connecting the old glass digitizer, but still the same result. I'm not sure if that tinted screen was part of the LCD and is now broken or if I somehow damaged something else when I was connecting it.

to tell the truth changing just the glass is definitely the cheapest route, but from what I've read is more difficult than buying the whole replacement LCD. I paid $25 on eBay but the whole LCD is closer to like $75.

So you mean it is easier to purchase a digitizer and LCD that still connected as one piece (http://www.globaldirectparts.com/Sprint-HTC-Evo-4G-LCD-p/htc736815.htm) as opposed to doing the digitizer or LCD individually? If I went that route I would just pay a 3rd party cell phone repair shop to do the work for 100 bucks...then you can hold someone else accountable.
I found the LCD here for cheap: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250782149841&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Supposed to arrive tomorrow so I will find out if the lcd is indeed the problem
thanks for that link, I may have to try that.

Is krazy glue conductive or something?

Hey guys,
I tried replacing my DINC digitizer again and everything went smooth until I booted the phone up. The middle of the touch screen doesnt work very well. I checked the cable to see if it was loose multiple times but that didn't work.
So I took the whole thing apart again and looked at it closely and realized the Krazy glue I applied was applied on the side roughly where the problem lies....
Is it possible it is messing with it so that it is detecting a touch there or something? I used krazy glue on there because I thought it would be like plastic.
Or is this just impossible and the digitizer I ordered is defective? It works besides the middle section of the screen.
on the contrary superglue is insulative which could also be the issue since the digitizer needs to be grounded not sure what it is like under the digitizer but is the area it gets glued to kinda metallic if so that could be your issue if not then it could be a bad digitizer i dont think i would have not used superglue i would have used double stick tape or something like that... or hell with how my case i have on mine is designed i would not have used any adhesive just left my case to hold it onto my phone incase it ever got broke again...
Hmm, ah so perhaps it is just not allowing that part of the screen to be sensed.
In any case, I replaced my "new" digitizer with the old one that is slightly cracked for now. I used krazy glue and it worked perfect this time, but then again i was careful with the application.
I will clean off the "new" and try one more time, but I suspect now that the "old" is working so good that it was in fact a defective one.
sorry to thread jack, but since there is discussion already started, I have an slcd dinc, can I directly swap the amoled screen into it? Would you guys happen to know?

it will not work. the board requires different drivers and i think a different power output. (i could be wrong) but its like if you bought a plasma tv and swapped for an lcd panel.
kind of figured that. thanks makes sense.

[Q] LCD Replacement???

Hi guys, I got my hands on a MT4G with a broken LCD.
First Q, is it worthy getting a replacement off cheapbay? What other options are there?
Second Q, is it hard to replace it? Is it possible to do it myself?
Thanks for your advise...
I haven't replaced an LCD myself but I am looking to replace a digitizer for my wife's phone.
Someone posted up this link for me in another thread I started.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/FULL-LCD-DI...984?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a12834fe0
This should take out the hard part of disassembling the digitizer from the lcd and reattaching and the adhesive itself.
It's the complete the front housing, digitizer AND LCD in one. Already assembled.
I haven't ordered it myself yet but I AM tempted. Especially after watching some of these disassembling videos.
Let me know what you decide and how it worked out.
Just PM me.
Thanks bro and good luck.
Thanks a lot, I will check it out, the adhesive part really has me in doubt.
I've replaced the LCD without the digitizer attached and you are both correct. It can be done but the finished product is not factory quality. I looked at the ebay part posted in the link and that would be the way to do it. Otherwise you have to use a hair dryer to heat the glue and its not fun.
If you are not familiar with taking electronics apart look for a video tutorial via google; I used one to take the MT4G apart. Also label the screws as they come out by drawing the phone on a piece of paper and placing the screw accordingly on the paper. Makes assembly much easier!
Hope you take on the challenge and good luck.

Yeah my only thing about ordering this complete assembly is that my wife's phone has the SO screen and I don't want to replace with an SH, which I'm sure that part is going to be. (99.99% sure)
Add to that, she doesn't even need a new LCD and the digitizer alone is just 25 bucks.
Decisions, decisions.

I have to clean the dirt out between my digitizer and lcd! Can't tell you how annoying that is. Suppose someone could do a better job resealing it... It would be nice if a digitizer/lcd kit came with new adhesive.

I saw lcd screen and touch screen digitizer for HTC mytouch 4G there.
I've been taking electronics apart since I was 7 tears old. The MyTouch 4g finally beat me.
There are a lot of really delicate connectors that break easily. Be careful

You'd better to buy non-working phone (maybe from ebay) and make one from two phones. You should have the screwdriver. Easy to replace.
It is not really hard i saw a vid on youtube just search it up super easy actually
I bought a digitizer LCD already together for like 75 and it wasn't too bad to exchange and put this new one in but when I powered the phone the bottom left of the screen didn't work and it impossible to take it back out of the silver bezel without breaking it so I sent it back to get my money and lost the bezel. Its not too hard but be careful take your time and don't pull or yank anything.

I replaced my digitizer. I agree, there are many delicate connectors, but nothing to be afraid of. You should watch the YouTube video over and over. Also, be careful not to push on the bottom buttons while taking it apart. This was the most frustrating thing because they wouldn't sit properly when reassembled. I took it apart 5 times before I forgot to detach the power ribbon and ripped it off! There are motherboards available to fix this, but saving it for another day.

That's funny that's the same exact thing I did pulled the power ribbon right out so I just said screw it and just bought a new phone on eBay

I have six of them, but they all have the bad emmc chip and have failed... So i dont think you would be too interested in those. so i highly doubt you will find what you are looking for as well, if it is in good shape, then why would they want to sell it, and there are few, if any other than me that have tried anything like hardware hacking these things...
is it possible to swap the emmc chip from one board to another?

not that i am aware of, check ebay for a board though...
the board i have now has a good emmc chip in it and works great except for the lcd connection point. the top plastic broke off to the ribbon cable is loose and it causes the screen to flicker real bad. ive looked online and a new board is around $120 new. im trying to get a broken phone off of ebay but so far they have all had bad chips.
Epoxy might be the dirty fix you need...
Me too!

I have the same problem. The LCD connector is all messed up after attempting to replace the screen. Did you find a solution?
Me too! Let us know if you figure out either how to fix it or where to get some good motherboards.

Messed up screen replacement, is it repairable?

So I dropped my screen a few months back and the glass cracked. It still worked $100 percent and since the glass wasn't shattered it didn't prevent me from using it. It was only annoying me so i decided to order a new glass and replace the glass. During this replacement I completely ****ed the phone up.
From what I understand there are 3 separate pieces, the LCD, the touchscreen digitizer, and the glass itself. I was supposed to pull the glass apart from the digitizer but instead pulled both up leaving only the lcd behind. In the process I completely shattered both glass and digitizer and severed a ribbon cable.
I couldn't link to an imgur album and the images were too large to attach so i put them in a rar file. As you can see in the pictures my new glass is completely transparent and the old broken one has a tint to it, and an extra layer attached. That was how I came to the conclusion it was the digitizer. I have tried to see if I could just replace the digitizer but all the pictures I've seen don't show the cable that I severed. I have no idea what that cable does, only that it was connected to the tinted portion of the glass.
Important to note is that the phone works. I hear it power on and if i get a notification it plays the sound and vibrates no issue. I just can't SEE anything. Does this mean the LCD is broken too? Or will it only power up when it has the digitizer attached? Is this repairable, if so, how? if not, where did I go wrong?
At this moment I am not due for an upgrade til June, and I don't have more than $100 to spend on a replacement so if I can I'd like to fix this one to both save money and not have to downgrade to a lesser phone.

You can buy a replacement screen with a digitizer attached but it will cost over $100 and the way your phone is now it may not be worth doing yourself. You can get a pro install for around $200. You may want to wait for your upgrade then.

Yeah I was hoping there was a cheap fix but I screwed myself. I ended up buying one off eBay that has a bad charging port for $100. I'm just going to swap the mobo and I should be good to go.
Sucks I had to spend the money, it was a gift from my brother for a birthday tattoo, butit's a learning experience. If I ever try to tackle a glass replacement again I know what NOT to do.
