I just rooted my evo 4g using Revolutionary and now I can't receive text messages. I flashed Cyanogenmod 7.0.3.1 and it works great except for the lack of incoming SMS. Outgoing works fine. I restored back to my rooted stock ROM and am not able to receive SMS there either. Any Ideas?
Thanks!
If you're back on the stock ROM (or any Sense ROM), try updating your profile (Settings->System Update). That seems to help some people with the same problem.

Do you have your phone number integrated with Google Voice?
Tried it a couple of times... No luck. Sent one usin a web text service and this is the notification I received to my email account that sent it. Maybe it will help.

Error 554 means the server rejected the message for some reason. Is there more of the error message you can provide (such as "Service Unavailable", etc)?
I Googled it as it relates to Sprint and saw that it could mean the server was too busy or the message was rejected because the provider (the web text service or your mail server) is on a watchlist. I was able to send one to my phone number @messaging.sprintpcs.com with no issues, using my Gmail account. Windows Live users have supposdly had this problem often.
There could be a temporary outage wherever you are -- but the only other thing you can try is "restoring" your profile.
Dial ##3282# from your phone, go to Edit Mode, put in your MSL (get it using MSL Reader from the Market if you don't already have the MSL), then click "Data Profile". Hit your Menu button and then select "Restore". It will do a few other things like update your PRL if needed, and then try to update the software. After that finishes, reboot and try again.

Did you find a solution yet? I just helped my friend flash CM on his Evo and he's having the same problem.
Solved
I ran into this problem and was made aware that I wasn't receiving texts just last night after 3 days of friends thinking I was an ass. Anyway, after a ton of attempts I was finally able to solve the problem. Here's what I did:
1. Create a backup of your current rom using clockwork recovery (there's nothing wrong with it so if it's customized the way you want everything minus the SMS bug, you can still have it... this worked for me).
2. Download the 2.2 Froyo stock Ruu: RUU_Supersonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.7.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe
3. Run the RUU yes, this un-roots your phone, but it kicks it back to Froyo 2.2 which is WAY more stable with the current Cyanogenmod rom.
4. Download Unrevoked 3 flash recovery & run to re-root your froyo HTC Evo, make sure you're patient because it will reboot your phone a couple times.
5. You now have a rooted, stock Evo running 2.2 with fully working SMS, just kick back into recovery mode and load up your original rom (the Cyanogenmod 7 that didn't have working SMS) and everything should work fine. I had a big flood of text messages show up so heads up on that.
It's a little time consuming, but I now have Cyanogenmod 7 running 2.3.3 on my phone with everything working fine now (as far as I can tell). Hope this helps!
BTW I didn't know if I was allowed to post links to the actual files, so just google them... they aren't too difficult to find.

I could use a link to that stock froyo rom. The only results I get from Google lead me to rooted versions on xda. Thanks for all your help! Ready to fix this issue!
It won't let me post the link because I'm a n00b on this forum. Google search "unroot gingerbread evo" (minus quotes) and look for htcevohacks link and it's on step #4. That's where I snagged it from.
Found The RUU
Fixed the problem on the first try, now to root again!
Thanks for all the help!
Thanks for posting the problem... it made me bust ass to figure out a solution when I ran into the same issue. Glad I could help.
Here is a quick fix. Worked for me instantly.
http://www.evo4gforum.net/htc-evo-4g-general-discussion/sms-issue/
Same thing, but...
Ok... I know, I know, I am a noob. I have searched on xda, androidforums and just plain ol googled it and this seems to be the closest to what I need to do.
I have an HTC Evo 4g, sprint originally but it is flashed to Cricket. it was originally rooted and (flashed?) to CM 7 (not sure which 7.____) supersonic. I downloaded gosms and handcent while looking for something to type Emoji into a certain app I use. They weren't what I wanted so I uninstalled them and got Emoji Keyboard which was closer to what I wanted.
If it wasn't that, I did go into my file manager and on the SDcard only I deleted what appeared to be empty folders. the previous owner didn't wipe the sdcard when he sold me the phone, so I had a lot of app folders I don't use. I did not delete anything that said mms, sms, or anything outside of the SD card!
My phone has not received any sms for over a week and I use the phone for work, I am missing important texts from clients and friends and it's extremely annoying.
ok so I took it to the guy who flashed Cricket to it (the guy who rooted it is out of town) and he said it must have been deleted or overwritten somehow. He put another ROM on it - CM 9 - Deck - running ICS now. That did not fix the problem as I guess it must be in the basic application folder. so my question:
Since this was able to work for CM7, will it work for CM9 also?
I don't have google voice other than whatever came on the phone (or this version of CM9) and when I went to google voice website it said my carrier couldn't do the port. I was gonna see if getting google voice and then uninstalling it would work. so I disabled the google voice application but I'm not sure if that will mess with any other apps... didn't do anything with my problem.
I uninstalled the gosms and the handcent, but they still have folders on the SDcard visible at least.
I went to file manager and in the system/apps/mms.apk I reinstalled that but no visible difference. rebooted and now I have written this post.
also I do not have a backup of the original HTC Sense, or a backup of the CM7 I originally installed... I have a .exe of the CM9 I currently have.
I'm sorry to ramble. please help! I'm sick of searching through threads! :crying:

You could wipe the entire fat side of your sd card and it wouldn't affect sms or mms so deleting that stuff is not the problem. Messing around in your root directory is never a good idea if your not really comfortable with it. That may be the issue. Or the Cricket flash wasn't done correctly. If I were you I'd do a nand back up and start over. Flash a stock rooted rom and update the radios. See if that helps. You could try clearing your caches in recovery first too.

hey guys.
i just bought a used Evo from a local. he had the phone flashed by VFC Mobile so it would work on MetroPCS. i have it connected to the network and most things seem to be working fine.
however, I have some (many questions).
1) the phone is running 2.1 - should I consider upgrading to Froyo?
1a. - if I do, does the flashing over to MetroPCS get lost?
2) how do I know if my phone is rooted? (there is an app called #superuser but nothing happens when I start it?
3) if it is, how do i access the adb I keep seeing in instructions to install bootscreens and such?
4) BIGGEST ISSUE HERE: the previous owner of the phone had his gmail account on the phone. until I moved the account over to mine, I was able to use android market. now that the phone is moved over to my account, i can't use android market and i keep getting a message that his gmail account can't log in. i can't seem to remove his account, even though I already added mine.
is there a way (easy or hard) to make my account be the default account?
according to the phone I have to do a full factory reset but then wouldn't I lose the network flash?
5) when researching flashing the phone, i had read there were some problems with MMS. my sister sent me several MMS and none of them arrived. my wife sent me one and it arrived. is this a problem with the MMS part of the flash or something else? can it be fixed?
i have CDMA workshop and not afraid to try things. so shoot any solutions/suggestions to the above questions, or anything else in general i should know (i like modifying my phones so don't be shy).
thanks for the help guys. i'm really enjoying this new phone and I'm looking forward to really making it mine

however, I have some (many questions).
1) the phone is running 2.1 - should I consider upgrading to Froyo? - YES but only after you root 2.1. if you dont, you cant root 2.2 yet.
1a. - if I do, does the flashing over to MetroPCS get lost? - not sure
2) how do I know if my phone is rooted? (there is an app called #superuser but nothing happens when I start it? - if YOU didnt root it, and you just got it,,, what do you think? - Super user, unless applications have already been granted SU access, will appear as if nothing is happening, SU will start to a black screen, you have to push the menu button to see the options - easiest way to tell if you ware rooted is to download something from the market that was designed for rooted phones, look for an app called shootme, its a screen shot app and it will tell you if you are rooted or not. you can also go under settings, then about phone, and software information, you can see what kernel and rom you are using. this is no guarentee because a stock rooted 2.1 rom will not have any indication that its rooted in that menu. try the market app i mentioned.
3) if it is, how do i access the adb I keep seeing in instructions to install bootscreens and such? - LOTS of information here about how to use ADB, start with the threads about how to root your phone, they usually have instructions for ADB
4) BIGGEST ISSUE HERE: the previous owner of the phone had his gmail account on the phone. until I moved the account over to mine, I was able to use android market. now that the phone is moved over to my account, i can't use android market and i keep getting a message that his gmail account can't log in. i can't seem to remove his account, even though I already added mine.

according to the phone I have to do a full factory reset but then wouldn't I lose the network flash? - you can remove the files with ADB but i do not know exactly how, you can also go under settings, then Accounts and Sync and see if there is a google account listed and remove it. - BEST way is to go into Settings--Privacy and choose factory restore, let it do its thing and when it boots up it will ask you to recreate your phone gmal account or just sign into YOUR account, which means you setup the market also
5) when researching flashing the phone, i had read there were some problems with MMS. my sister sent me several MMS and none of them arrived. my wife sent me one and it arrived. is this a problem with the MMS part of the flash or something else? can it be fixed? - Yeah you flashed a f'd up rom or the other owner did. you need to find out what rom you are running via the "about phone' -- Software menu to find out what you need to update to or reflash to
i have CDMA workshop and not afraid to try things. so shoot any solutions/suggestions to the above questions, or anything else in general i should know (i like modifying my phones so don't be shy). - CDMA Workshop isnt going to do you any good except for getting your MSL code which is only good for a couple of things.

It sounds like you probably need to wipe the phone and flash a new ROM. It will keep all of your sprint information but should reset everything to your google account.
You will need to find out what kind of bootloader/recovery you have first though. To find that out do the following:
With the phone off hold vol down and power till it turns on. It should come up to a white background and text saying it is checking for updates, if it wants to update or reboot tell it No (vol down)
There will be some green text at the top of your screen, that is your hboot version, security settings, radio, etc. This will tell you if your NAND is unlocked or not.
After you get that information scroll down to Recovery using the vol buttons and press the Power button to select it. It will show the EVO splash screen for a second and then go to a black screen with an icon in the middle. Depending on the recovery you will see a menu with green text and Build: ??? at the bottom. If this comes up then that means you are good to go.
If there is no recovery installed you will see an exclamation mark and the phone will freeze, just pull the battery to reset it. Otherwise you can select Reboot or Power Off to get out of there.
In order to use ADB you will need the Android SDK, just install that and there are tons of guides out there on how to use it.
this is what it said when I followed your instructions:

TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab

for recovery i have:
ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.1
and one of the options is "nandroid"...
-----------
before reading your post I had reset the phone to factory. I lost most programs but i didnt install them in the first place so i'm cool with that. however, up until yesterday (today?) i was able to use pandora, go to facebook, use the internet, etc on Metro's network. right now i keep trying and keep getting a data error. even the weather update isn't working.
you mentioned wiping the phone and flashing a new rom. problem is I'M NOT ON SPRINT. THIS IS A FLASHED PHONE TO METROPCS. we need to have this clear before you guys send me to flash a rom that will leave me with a useless phone. can I reflash to metro using a better rom you think?

Looks like your NAND is still locked, you should consider fully rooting & unlocking your NAND so you can update your Radio. Once fully rooted Amon-ra is another option for your recovery that is rock solid, apparently clockwork has some bugs in it when it comes to clearing caches. Also it is very important you Do Not Do Any OTA Updates, if you do you will be stuck without root access until someone finds a way to crack it.
As far as flashing a ROM goes I dont think it would hurt anything but I dont have any experience with setups like yours. There's a thread in the dev section that where you might be able to find an answer though. Aparently you're not the only one who had their data stop working on them too.

i am not trying to be a **** but why the f**k did you buy a phone for a network to which it isnt supported....
ANY cellular company can tell what phone you are using and kick you and ever EVO off the network if they so desire.
frankly this is an ongoing legal issue with the Fed's i think.
phone companies locking people down to using their network with their phones...
not sure if it is ever going to go anywhere but i think it's bull****, everyone use sims and just get a new sim for your carrier.
but that means all phones would have to be QUAD band if they wanted multi carrier access and that makes phones expensive and i doubt they will ever do it.
have many reasons to stick with MetroPCS while wanting to have the best phone. MetroPCS is inviting their customers to bring ANY CDMA phone to their network and they will happily flash it and connect it for you. problem is if you flash with their service then you lose a lot of features due to their mass-flashing software. so you flash your phone individually and you have all features minus Sprint's 4G (and minus Sprint's PRICE).
anyways, after reading all this and reading online I decided to go and flash it myself. i'm about to finish now...be back in a few to report how it went.
got the phone flashed to ava froyo v5.
this is what's going on after diagnosing what works and what doesnt:
mms out - error sending (generic network error)
mms in - no notification, never arrive
texts out - fine
texts in - fine
internet - fine
internet OVER WIFI - not working (opera mobile works, regular internet explorer wont?)
facebook - fine
email out - sending error (account settings incorrect - incoming server does not accept ssl) - works fine with WIFI
email in - Network Error - works fine with WIFI
weather updates ok
-------
anyone know how to address these issues?
thanks for the help
For about the last 2 days I have been unable to receive text messages on my phone yet I can still send out. Regardless of what rom I use I am still not getting any. I even called sprint and they said it seems like a technical issue. I didn't realize it until someone from work called wondering why I hadn't responded, I just thought no one wanted to talk to me :/ haha
Come on XDA geniuses! Please save me! I don't want to get a new phone
Edit : the only weird thing that has happened in the past few days was I flashed what I thought was a CM kernel but CWM said "Updating boot " I freaked out fearing that I did something wrong (I know on a computer if you mess up boot you're introuble) and quickly restored a NAND knowing that it would restore any boot image
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
happened to me as well, u have 2 update ur msid... if ur on a CM ROM, do a nandroid and flash the default evo rom, or any sense rom, i used the fresh rom...
then call sprint, n tell them you cant receive texts and you want to update your msid, and they will tell u 2 go 2 your dial pad, n dial ##2...# <<<--- some numbers, cant remember... jes enter those numbers, n dey'll tell u wat 2 do, its simple... once u update the msid, ur fone will reboot, then try 2 send urself a text from another fone or frm online, it shud work now....
once the texts start working, reboot into ur recovery again n flash ur nandroid backup 2 take ur fone back 2 how it was be4
if ur not on a CM ROM, u dnt have 2 boot into recovery or do nandroid or anything, jes call sprint straight up, n tell em about not receiving texts n need 2 update msid, same stuff as above...
This has been an ongoing issue for me for a few months now. For a time i was also unable to make calls as well. The phone would ring on my side but the other person's phone would not ring at all. I called sprint and they had me update my profile and some other things and that seemed to help initially as i started receiving sms again. But to this day, i still sometimes get messages that were sent hours late. Outgoing seems ok, but the incoming are delayed from an hour to 12 hours. I read this thread and it seems like this is a sprint issue.

1) "Flashing boot" means "flashing /boot partition" which is where the kernel is stored. No reason to freak out about that.
2) To solve your problem, just Nandroid Backup your ROM, flash over to a stock rooted Sense ROM (You can get 3.70.651.1 from here) and from there, update your PRL and Profile. You should get a slew of texts that you hadn't been receiving, and after that you can just Nandroid Restore back to your previous ROM.
This was a bug that we on the Snap team first found while beta-testing Snap 7.6, and we also found that flashing over to Sense usually cleared it up, but updating PRL and Profile always fixed it.
Really? lol I feel like such a noob (even though i am not really one) most kernels I flash say "Updating Kernel" and etc.
Also I figured that out about an hour ago when I read that on an HTC Hero forum.
and it worked I got like 50 texts hahahaaaa!
But thanks because if I didnt find that out earlier then YOUD BE A LIFESAVER!
I'm curious though, what causes this to happen?

I understand most of the main input from this thread here, and this is way aside from anything here but does it make a difference if I have a 1.77_003 PRI Version with 60674 PRL Version?
I see that they have 1.90_003 or something now? Is that updateable for my phone? Specs in my signature if that is any useful bit of info

Really? lol I feel like such a noob (even though i am not really one) most kernels I flash say "Updating Kernel" and etc.
Also I figured that out about an hour ago when I read that on an HTC Hero forum.
and it worked I got like 50 texts hahahaaaa!
But thanks because if I didnt find that out earlier then YOUD BE A LIFESAVER!
I'm curious though, what causes this to happen?

We never found out what really "caused" it, but my theory is that EPST (which only Stock-based ROMs have, not CM), "checks-in" with the radio, or keeps it in-check, and sometimes it gets a little messed up, and the EPST has to correct it.
One way to think about it I guess, is a vehicle travelling in a straight line; it won't always be straight, and needs to be corrected every now and then due to slight errors, or outside interference (wind, imperfections in the road, etc.). Random reboots, power-offs, bad updates, screwed up cell towers, and such might have a similar effect on the radio.
This is just speculation though, I have no real proof behind it.
Same problem. need help
Hi. I use this forum for a long time but it's the first time I comment. I have the same problem and it's really annoying. I am noob and I need help to do this:
1) "Flashing boot" means "flashing /boot partition" which is where the kernel is stored. No reason to freak out about that.
2) To solve your problem, just Nandroid Backup your ROM, flash over to a stock rooted Sense ROM (You can get 3.70.651.1 from here) and from there, update your PRL and Profile. You should get a slew of texts that you hadn't been receiving, and after that you can just Nandroid Restore back to your previous ROM.
I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S Plus with custom rom 4.3.1.
Thank you
Hello All!
I have no clue what I did but I'm not receiving text messages any longer. I THINK it might be related to deleting two handcent files in my SD root this morning, since I had deleted the program. Things I've tried to do:
- nandroid back to a previous save, nothing.
- Flash two different ROM's, nothing.
- DL Handcent again, nothing.
HELP!?!?
Any guidance would be appreciated!
Maybe call sprint CS? Dont tell them you're rooted obviously, but just have them check the network.
Try updating profiles?

Not yet, thnx, will try that next.
I just nandroid back to an old Sense ROM, if that doesn't help will try your suggestion.
Ok, well, it looks like nandroiding back to an old Sense ROM fixed the problem for me, it now seems to work.
So my question now is WHAT THE HECK HAPPEN?
All of a sudden, across different ROMS and even in stock/rooted, even with Google voice, my phone isn't receiving any texts. No notifications, nothing. I can see them if I open G-Voice in the inbox, but not if I open Messaging or Go SMS, but this started before I even installed G-Voice. Before that, nothing.
It started yesterday. Anyone else having this problem?? Is Sprint having issues or something?
Haven't had any of those problems and I'm in sprint too

I just reflashed my radios and now I'm nandroiding back to stock/rooted to update Profile and PRL....
Hope that does it
EDIT
Looks like reflashing the radios worked. AS soon as I got booted into stock, a ton of messages started coming in
ok, so how does one go about reflashing the radios? did you do that and follow through with the nandroiding back to stock like you said?
I'm sorry. I have an HTC Evo 4g, rooted, originally had CM7 on it when the sms issue happened. took it to my friend and he put CM9 on it to see if going to a newer ROM would help. it didn't. he stated that I would probably have to go back to stock, reinstall sms from there (?) and then go back to a rom if I wanted.
I have been googling the issue and found this: forum.xda-developers. com/showthread.php?p=34337380#post34337380 which had directions to unroot and go back to Froyo, then reroot and reinstall the CM7 ROM. If I don't have to go through all that I would love not to, and this thread is much newer than that one.
also: I don't think I have a copy of my original HTC Sense or whatever base setup. not sure if the guy who rooted my phone for me saved one... also, don't think I have a copy of the CM7 I had installed. I do however have a .exe of the CM9 I currently have. Honestly, I like some of the settings on CM7 more than the CM9 I have, but oh well, I guess.
Anyway, sorry to ramble. I have had this issue not receiving text messages randomly since about November 9th. I am on a Sprint Evo but it is flashed to Cricket.
Thank you for the help! I am learning a lot as I have been looking all this up, but more info would definitely help.
-Amber.
EDIT: Ok, updated the Radios with CM-EVO_Radio-2.15.00.12.19_PRI-2.33_WiMax_NV.zip. I did not nandroid into the stock rom though because I don't think I have it saved. I've found a few apparently-stock roms on xda but I read something else that said what looks like stock could just be another rom and not have all of the original settings refreshed. I am pretty sure that when I had CM9 put on my phone to try to fix the sms issue they did a clean wipe before they installed it, but I could be wrong.
I still have not received any of my still-missing texts. =( I can still send which makes me think it isn't necessarily that I'm flashed to cricket... any other help would be most welcome. thanks.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1200261..that thread should help you. It's stock rooted gingerbread with radio updates. Sorry if thats not what your looking for.
Are there in apps in existence that will restore a phone's proper mms/sms setting after being flashed?
I have an ATT Galaxy S3, running cyanogenmod 10.0 (10.0.0-datt), installed via clockworkmod recovery (ROM Manager). Everything works beautifully except that I can neither send nor receive text messages.
Now before you yell at me, yes, I checked the other threads, and I'm aware of the wiki entry over at cyanogenmod's site (can't post the URL on account of newness). I did try to update the SMSC number. I get update errors with the bare number and the PDU number. The only option that appears to work is to use the standard ATT smsc number in quotes. That doesn't yield an update error, but on refresh, I see "+13123149810",145 . I have no idea where the trailing comma and 145 come from. They just show up. Don't know if it means anything.
Anyway, I have also tried various combinations of removing the SIM/rebooting etc, though I have not yet tried a full reset. I have also checked the APN stuff, and it appears sound.
Here is another wrinkle. I did at one time run a CM nightly to 4.2, so I have that '0' directory on my SDCard. I haven't observed it to cause a problem otherwise, but...
So the symptom is that if I send a text, it appears to send but never arrives at the receiver's phone. If I send an MMS, it flat refuses to send, saying the service is not activated on the network, which is odd since I have an unlimited plan.
I'm now at a loss, but I don't want to go back to stock, or to do another full reset. Any ideas?
I've run cm10 for a bit it was whatever, but I've never run into these issues your having and I use cwm too. The only thing I can think of right now is maybe something to do with rom manager its just a crappy app its buggy and always gave me problems so I never ever use it! Try downloading it directly from cm and wipe everything and flash again

Well I tried the full deal again. I booted to CWM Recovery and did the wipe/reset, then loaded, respectively, CM10 and GApps. I did not load everything back on the phone or otherwise restore data. No themed Messenger. Still the same deal. Text messages go nowhere and I get 'service not activated on network' for MMS. No difference.
Do I need to get a new SIM? Would that help? Is there a way to debug what's happening when I try to send a text? I have ADB and the whole SDK and am reasonably comfortable at the command line. I just don't have the standard XDA tribal knowledge.

No, that won't really do you any good, UNLESS your sim wasn't provided with the device when you got it.
I would say to ODIN back to Stock, and see if things change back to what they should be. While in stock go ahead and remove that pesky folder you found.
Again see if that changes things.
If things have returned to normal, make your nandroid and then reflash the ROM you were using and see if things are still the same or if you have the ability to send again. If still the same then it's an issue with the ROM, probably in the APN.

I think I'd have tried ODIN by now, thinking along the same lines, except that I don't have any Windows machines in the house, or any immediate access. I have VMWare, but don't trust that where flashing is concerned. I've been trying to figure out if I could use Heimdall, but that looks like a non-starter at the moment. Maybe I'll have to see if I can borrow someone's Windows computer... And just when I thought I was rid of it.
