Model ID incorrect - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Have a Desire HD, got a refurb from AT&T for 50 dosh.
Anyway, 1.84 is the firmware.
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-downgrade-htc-desire-hd-to-root-it-after-ota-update/
Was following this and all was going well.
However when I get to install the old firmware after boot, it says model id incorrect.
Any help? Seems like I need a gold card or something?
EDIT used goldcard version 0.0.7 to make a goldcard, said it was successful.
Seems to be stuck at loading pd98diag.zip hmm

rage rage rage rage
Reason it locked up because goldcard was corrupted or something.
Redidd it this time hitting the format, and it said it worked, it's called goldcardi n my pc now.
Followed instructions to downgrade and bam
same error of Model ID incorrect...
Help please?
EDIT: Tried it manually, and tried a diff micro sdhc card

This actually uses a different ID for the goldcard than the other utilities detected for my phone, which is what the main part of the problem was.

[Q] Un root HTC Bravo...

First off, Yes I have searched more than this site for an answer to the point where my handset would not do anything but go into the recovery menu.
What I want to do is put stock HTC Android on my Desire.
Currently it is rooted but has to be un rooted to go onto works E Mail server. Yes I know it makes no difference but my employer insist on official firmware on handsets.
The handset is a GSM HTC Desire (Bravo)
BRAVO PVT1 SHIP 2-ON
HBOOT-093.0001
CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY v2.5.0.7
I have tried several RUU's only to be told of a boot loader error.
Can some one please tell me how this is done?
I asked my network and they could not help so unless some one can help me im going to have to ask HTC.
THANKS in advance

Hi,
I've seen a few posts that refer to getting the HTC ROM changing it's name to PB99.img (or similar or ...) Then reoot the phone. Try searching the forums for this type of solution. I'm sorry but can't remember where I saw it in here.

Thanks for you input mate
Hmmm,
How would they know if the HTC Sense ROM just happened to be rooted. One could argue that the ROM was a valid HTC ROM. I know it's semantics but ...
The "About phone" would still show HTC as the ROM.
There must already be a variety of ROMs on HTC desires already used in your company.
The Clockwork recovery would give it away mate.

This might work for you Not sure if you have tried it but try again
WAIT, BEFORE YOU START, CREATE A GOLDCARD. IT IS VERY NECESSARY. THINGS WILL GO WRONG IF YOU DONT.
Firstly, download this file. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13240777/Desire Downgrade.ZIP
Extract the files.
Run the win-down.bat file.
Follow on screen instructions.
After the process is completed, Head to the root of your SD card and check if there is a file named PB99IMG, there should be one.
Secondly, disconnect your phone and turn it off. (MAKE SURE PHONE IS CHARGED TO AT LEAST 70%++
After that boot up your phone while pressing the volume down button and the power button.
The bootloader should be checking for files after awhile and once it found the file that is supposed to be in the root of your sd card, press the volume up button (NOT EXACTLY SURE, SHOULD BE THE ONE THAT SAYS YES AND CONTINUE)
It should be writing files to your phone. and replaces everything. E.G: HBOOT, RECOVERY,RADIO and such.
It should be writing files successfully and then it would ask you to reboot. Continue with the reboot and you should be having your Desire back to stock. Perfect.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THERE ARE RISKS INVOLVED LIKE FAILURE OF WRITING TO THE HBOOT. PLEASE REMEMBER TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MAINLY, DO NOT BLAME ME FOR ANYTHING THAT GOES WRONG.
FINALLY, YOU SHOULD BE READING EVERYTHING UP TO HERE AND THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GOLDCARD (A GOLD SD CARD)
Hope this helps you and please ask if you have further questions. PM me if the questions cannot be answered here. Good Luck

Oh, one more thing, that error you get i think it is because you don't have a GoldCard. You need one to do the above too

Yup, "ERROR 140:BOOTLOADER VERSION ERROR" The only time you can put a lower bootloader version is when you have a gold card.
The above method posted by Shockem should work. A second method is to just put a gold card in your device and get the latest WWE RUU. Check my signature for the file. Once a gold card is in, it will work. Note that this method unbrands your device, so if you a branded device with visible logos, dont go for this.
Third method is by flashing the OTA zip file you got from your operator if you have it. Again gold card should be in the device. But is is likely that it may also work without since CustID is same. Advantage: preserves branding
So do I still need a gold card even though my device is rooted?

Certainly.........
Point is you say you've tried several RUUs and they dont work..Hence we have to assume it's a branded phone. HTC even brands some phones with the brand HTC (Eg Indian HTCs). To unroot a branded HTC, you need a goldcard.
i had same problem, i was trying for days till i rememberd that i can downgrade hboot, install android 2.1 and ota update froyo. ( if your desire wasnt branded you dont need goldcard). problem was that i couldnt find stock froyo, only eclair
this thread helped me :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768256
i hope it helps
Point is some people (including me in the past) dont realize that they have a branded phone. There may not be any visible branding. So better be safe than sorry, by creating a goldcard.. Once the device if bricked, you cant (in most cases) create a goldcard
Thank you all so much.
I'll be doing this tonight.

I think your goldcard isn't working correctly, make sure you follow the steps to create it precisely.

Troubleshooting:
- "Main version is older"? You did not type everything correctly. Please try it again and see if any errors come up.
- "Error opening backup file"? You did not use "Charge only" -connection, or your SD card is faulty.
- "CID mismatch/CID incorrect"? Your device is branded. Just make a Goldcard, put the PD98IMG.zip to the card again and go to the bootloader.
- "Model ID incorrect"? Some Telus DHDs get this, just make a Goldcard.
- Zip will not load in bootloader? Format your SD card to FAT32, no quick format! You can also try another SD.
- Problems while making Goldcard? See this post.
- PD98IMG.zip md5sum is: C3D244A9F056E48EE3851A14FF52204C

Are you sure you are running on the Carrier firmware? Also I am unsure of the process for those as mine was unbranded. If it is the very latest carrier build it may have been massaged to deny root. I will have a gander and see what I can find out.
Just found this quote in the FAQ - "CID mismatch/CID incorrect"? Your device is branded. Just make a Goldcard, put the PD98IMG.zip to the card again and go to the bootloader.
well this video makes it clear, ... , very clear .. i just rooted using this guide approx 2-3 weeks ago....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AkbmKLCkDWg
then u'll reach the "CID incorrect !" error (if your phone is branded)
if it is branded::do the following
i then suggest you download the GoldCardHelper app and install it on your phone.
you need to jot down the MMC2 Reverse CID ... (make sure you dont copy it using the 'menu -> copy' method, rather jot it down on a paper, because the copy method copies the MMC1 reverse CID, and you need the MMC2)
then you can use the GoldCardTool.exe to install the goldcard image (emailed to you from the website)
copy the PD98IMG zip file onto the sd card, and then downgrade
hey guys i appreciate all the help, ive tried loads of times and yet i cant manage, its always producing cid incorrect !!,
Im going to reset my phone and try again, ill tel u guys how it goes, thanks again
Goldcard tool never worked for me.
It often doesn't work using high capacity SD cards so use a 1 or 2 gig one.
I used this guide:
http://android.modaco.com/content/general-discussion/305672/creating-a-goldcard/
andrew, is your firmware 1.73 or 1.75? - because these guides support only these firmwares ... im not sure if these techniques work with newer firmwares.
My downgrade guide works even with 2.x builds. Please do not link to addictivetips, it is hard to provide help when people mix guides..
mine is 1.84, anything i can do ?

Simply follow the downgrading guide in the dev section. It works for 1.84 too.
I have the same problem used all guides and followed the videos. simply it doesn't work. In the beginig it used to say CID Incorrect then after making the Goldcard, it doesn't give me any response and just goes back to the original bootloading screen after saying image not found for like 3-4 times. Please help with any simple way

In my experience, the "No image!" error is experienced when you have the SD card formatted as FAT16 rather than FAT32. If you used your phone to format the card then this might have happened (I think it defaults to FAT16 when the card is 2GB or less - I hope someone else can confirm this)

Finally it worked after trying soooo many guides and videos I used this simple direct one http://theunlockr.com/2010/03/10/how-to-create-a-goldcard/ and it worked. But to be frank with you it looks like the issue is the SD card itself, not all SD card accepts the Goldcard process. My last attempt after trying 4 different cards I pulled my camera card and I said this is the last trial and it worked although it is SanDisk same I tried with 3 before and I even tried Toshiba brand. Any ways thank you all you are the best to help now I moving to next step S-Off

Help returning HBOOT to 1.01.0001 please

Hi everyone,
I am trying to install Cyanogenmod on my new wildfire. I'm following the instructions here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Wildfire:_Full_Update_Guide. However my wildfire is on HBOOT 1.01.0002 and to use Revolutionary I need to downgrade this to 1.01.0001. I've tried the instructions here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028 with no luck. I can produce a gold card but it does not downgrade my HBOOT. I next tried a stock ROM from the collection here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1275680 but that gave me a Error 131 Customer Error saying that I had the wrong RUU file.
My phone is unlocked but currently branded to "Three" which is a UK network. It is running Android 2.2.1 (Froyo)
Can anyone please supply me an RUU ROM file for this carrier?
If you have any other way I can install Cyangenmod please let me know
P.S. I would have posted this in the developers forum but I don't have enough posts yet.
Thanks all
.

Perhaps I'm too pessimistic sometimes - just in case - you probably better point out that you mean the second link in your sig
its been a while since i did the process but im on 3 uk and this is the guide ive used on 5 occasions without any complications ...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15156610
this is from memory so i may be a little cloudy but you should get my meaning.....
make sure that you are creating the gold card by using your s/n and not imei number (maybe the other way round but the number that your prompt to use) as the goldcard will still be created if using the wrong number but wont work.
i used windows 7 with all my antivirus etc etc turned off but ive seen that pc os can be the issue sometimes.
sorry i cant remember much more to assist but keep going at it. sometimes a creation of the goldcard again can help.
goodluck.

That guide worked for me, too. I'd approve everything slymobi mentioned (besides that I'm not on 3 uk) including that I'm also not sure if there were any difficulties (can't remember). I'll try to have a quick look...
What I slightly remember is that there were reports that using a different SD card helped when the gold card process failed...

having a look at this turned out that you might have messed up that part a little bit (I couldn't remember either lol): at the gold card generator you'll need the serial of the SD card (CID), not any info of the phone. Just wanted to make sure...

and yes, I slightly remember (looked into my steps as far as I could still find out) that I've also had some problems with generating the gold card. If I'm not totally mistaken I looked for an alternative solution and found the one you seem to have already tried: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132028
The author suggests the following:
If you get a Customer ID error while doing this, your goldcard is not working!
Create a new goldcard and re-run step2

ah! maybe it was the 0.80 to 1.01 process that involved the s/n or imei but im sure i needed some number from battery or original box at some stage still i used the guide on 5 phones and for mine i used the memory box and guidelines of master yoda back in the day. i had to upgrade boot not downgrade.

[Q] Soft Bricked Telstra HTC Desire

Hiya Folks, I recently attempted to unroot a Telstra HTC Desire (GSM) that I have not used in about a year or so, it was originally running Froyo then unlocked with the unlockr and had Leedroid loaded in. I looked all over and found an unroot + flash to stock on the unlokr, However the program aborted about halfway through (it required me to be using HTC Sync), the phone or the system stopped talking to one or the other and has now soft/bricked the phone. Upon boot it will not go past the Telstra NextG loading screen. Is there a way to unbrick & reflash stock or am I now stuck with a paperweight ?.
I have read the other similar threads but most of those seem to require you to be able to access the boot loader
Any help is appreciated in this.
With the phone turned off, hold volume down + power
If it boots into bootloader then read this guide and do it the PB99IMG method
