Bit of a preamble...
Because I'm a stickler, I spent a while getting used to my device when it was stock and eventually with medium to heavy use I was getting 36+ hours out of the battery. It nearly always hit 1d 12h before I even considered recharging.
I then went with Gingerburst and was delighted to see that the battery life remained the same. Now, Gingerburst wasn't happy with my class 2 SD card and Sense restarted all over the place, before eventually crashing in such a way that I had no choice but to wipe it to get functionality back. I fancied a change anyway, so flashed Miui to my phone.
At this point, battery life went to the knackers...first run through on Miui was a mere 10 hour battery life. I stuck with it for a few days but it didn't improve, and a couple of other things irritated me as well. (Another story)
I've since gone to Ginger Villain, and although the battery life is a bit more than 10 hours - more like 18 - it's still nowhere near what it was. For example, it's on next to me. Wireless data turned off, just mobile signal and wifi for the last 15 minutes, and it's shed 7% in an hour and a half. By that reckoning I'll get 20 hours out of it.
Looking at the battery usage curve - on stock and Gingerburst, it'd barely decrease, being more or less a horizontal line, unless I started doing things, whereby it'd steepen. It seems like since flashing, it follows a steady decrease at a steady rate whether I'm doing something or not.
I've recharged to full and wiped my stats to recalibrate but so far, very little change.
Any ideas what's caused this, or how I could fix it? It's very frustrating to have to charge it so often again!
(P.S. Oh, and another reason I'm irritated enough to post - it went flat from 39% overnight. Whilst on airplane mode. Which meant my alarm didn't go off! When on airplane mode before this started, it wouldn't shed a single percent point overnight!)

So like everyone else my battery life sucks. No big deal. I bought the extended battery from Sprint, and I can see the battery diminish in front of my eyes. I mean dropping 1 percent per minute. Is there a way to test the phone to see if it is the culprit?

ther are lots of ways to check things. does it drop 1% a minute all the time meaning you only get 100 minutes? does it only do it when you take it off the charger at 100% where ti will drop to any where from 99-90% in a matter of minutes?
if the later then thats normal and is because the phone doesnt have a trickle charge. this means that the phone charges your battery to 100% then stops however the indicator on the phone will not change it will still show 100% once the acctual power reaches 90% the phone then charges again up to 100%. what this means is once you take your phone off the pwoer if it has been sitting there even if it says it is at 1005 it can be any where from 90-100% which the battery quickly changes to over first few minutes.
If it happens past 90% and all the time then something is wrong and you likely have at least 1 if not more apps running wild on you, you have things set to sync constantly, and you have everything under the sun turned on for your phone.
for apps the paid version of system panel is very nice for monitoring you can go to monitor top and top apps and see which apps are using the most battery/cpu.
witht he information you have given that is aobut the best i can tell you. I would not say everyone has crappy battery life with the evo as i have slowly gotten my phone set up and now with moderate usage i can get 14-15 hours and at least 8-10 with very heavy usage(stock battery) which i dont consider to be crappy battery life.
I appreciate the response, and I forgot to add that I'm running stock unrooted sense. This is not my first Android phone so I know about battery managing. I don't have everything sync every two minutes nor do I have everything turned on. It does drop rather quick even past 90 percent. I think it might be the phone it self. I doubt I got 2 bad batteries, one being extended. I'll see if I could get a device swapped out.

My first EVO was like that. It drained quickly shortly after charging. I could never figure it out. Till one night before going to bed, I noticed something weird about the bottom keys on the phone. They were " very dimmly " lit. The home, menu, return, search were all dimmly lit. It was I believe a defect in the phone. I got it swapped out. No problems like the 1% drain since then.

Sorry to post the millionth battery question on this board, but I'm not seeing an answer after searching around. I've got a rooted Evo running Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo RLS3, and I flashed a Netarchy Kernel this morning (the 4.1.9.1 aggressive undervolting one). I know that sometimes kernels take a day or two to adjust, so maybe this is a non-issue but I figured I'd ask anyway.
Basically it seems like when my phone is idle, the battery drops maybe 1% per hour, which is great. At one point it actually didn't lose ANY battery life in an hour of idleness. But as soon as I start using it, the percentages start to drop real quick. It's almost as if the battery really WAS losing battery during the idle time, and as soon as I start using the phone the battery indicator "catches up" if that makes sense.
So for example, today at work I decided to run some tests. I had 3G running but everything else was off (4G, bluetooth, GPS, etc). I've got Facebook syncing every two hours, K9 Mail pushing my Gmail, and I think that's all that's running. My battery was at 90% and I put it down and didn't touch it at all for like 2 hours. After two hours my battery was on 89%. So of course I was thrilled. But then I used the phone for 20 minutes reading some emails and checking out some websites, and boom I'm down to 79%. So I lost 10% in 20 minutes, in an area where I usually get good 3G signal.
The same thing continued all day. I'd leave the phone alone with the screen off for 2 hours, and the battery will have dropped maybe 1%. But after 5 minutes of use I would quickly lose 5-7%. Literally in 5 minutes. At one point I saw the indicator drop 2 or 3 percentage points in one shot; so I went from like 50% to 47% in one shot, without "passing through" 49 and 48%. Seems really weird...
In your experience does this sound like a "kernel needs to settle" type of thing?
Again sorry to bug you experts with noob questions but I love this phone and want to maximize its value. As an FYI this is with the stock battery and no task killers or SetCPU running. I do have the Chinese eBay 3000 battery, but I figured it's easier to troubleshoot with the smaller battery for now. Any advise is greatly appreciated.
I have noticed that every time I load a new Rom on my phone (including a wipe) my battery life is awesome as long as I let the phone get down to about 2 percent before recharging. As soon as I charge the phone without the battery almost dead the battery life on the phone starts to suck. This leads me to believe that there is something written to flash memory when you plug the charger in. For a while I had noticed that if I plug the charger in in the middle of the day due to heavy usage that my battery life sucks for a week or so afterwards then slowly goes back to normal after regular charging before I go to bed. Under normal charging conditions (plug it in when I go to bed) I can get about a days worth of charge. This is a stark contrast to the 2 plus days I get out of the phone after a fresh ROM load is loaded and I let the battery almost die before charging it in.
Anyone else observe this or have any idea whats going on that can be causing this. Maybe its just a simple matter of finding the file and deleting it. And yes I have tried doing a jump charge and wiping the battery stats. It doesn't give the same results as a wipe of the phone with a new ROM.
My battery seems good if i do this...
Install new ROM or not, just charge phone while i sleep (usually from 12am-530am) up and at work, coverage sucks in the building so i constantly switch from 1x to 3g ... battery life drains and i will be dead by 12 - 1230pm If i leave it on charge from then until i hit 100% (usually 30 minutes after) i take it off and head out of work, ill last all day and end up at 12am again with at least 60%
This is all heavy usage. Pandora stays running, facebook and plenty of texts/emails. My phone will never sit still without any activity for 2 minutes.
Switching kernels is the thing that saved my battery with now my kernel is 2.6.32.32-ck2-BFS by ziggy

It could be different phones handle the same rom/kernel differently too. I noticed this when i was running a blackberry storm 2. Both mine and my brothers, we would have the exact hybrid OS installed. let em sit idle after having done the exact thing....mine would drain a lot faster than his. could be phone vs phone in the same case as i mentioned, who knows? what rom / kernel you running?

I'm running Cyanogen 7 rc2 with the stock kernel that comes with it. I don't believe its possible to change the kernel on Cyanogen.

You can use whatever AOSP/GB kernel you want.
So its been a while since my last update but I wanted to pass along some more observations in hopes that someone can tell me how the power system works on Android phone.
For quite some time I have been able to use my phone for 2 full days before it required a recharge. This came about when I loaded Cyanogen 7 on my phone from scratch. As long as I charged it every 2 days the phone would have no problems lasting for two full days.
Two weeks ago I got stuck at a car dealership for about 8 hours. I passed the time by reading books, playing angry birds and surfing the net on my phone. About 7 hours in my phone was at 2 percent. I plugged the phone into someones charger and charged it for an hour or so so I would have a phone for the drive home. Ever since then my battery life has sucked. For a while I could barely get a full day out of my phone before it would die. I'm getting about a day out of it now which is acceptable I suppose but Its disappointing since I know the phone is capable of so much more.
So seriously what is the deal with the charging system on this phone? Why is it the phone has excellent battery life only after the phone is wiped and fully discharged before it is plugged in again? If a wipe of the phone fixes the battery what is it about the whip that does the fixing? Can it be reproduced without wiping the phone?
Come on guys. Someone out there is smart enough to figure this out. Hook us up.
It'll constantly recalibrate after you flash, so no real need to do the full discharge unless you really want to. If you don't do it then it'll get stable and better accuracy after a couple of weeks, but yes when you first flash a ROM it'll have sketchy battery life.
The battery is charging fine but your phone is still trying to determine how big your battery is, so it may not fully charge all the way. The quickest way for your phone to determine how big your battery is, is to drain it all the way down then charge it all the way back up. Some say this is potentially damaging to Li-Ion batteries. Personally I don't do it because of that, but if you chose to not do a full drain, your phone will figure out your battery size it'll just take a longer time for your phone to do it.
The actual battery life you get on your phone varies hugely on (in order):
1) amount of CPU you're using
2) data usage
3) reception strength
4) Screen brightness
So that in itself will cause some drastic day to day difference in battery life.
With all that being said, the battery life you're not getting during the inaccurate gauge period isn't that much. If you're someone who needs every last minute of battery that you need to have them right away, then personally I would suggest doing some other things such as under-volting your kernel and lowering your clock speeds.
Ok so after a hard reset and at 100% charge my HTC Radar says 1 day and 15 hours remaining. It has been like that for a few days. After about a week, 100% charge results in 20 hours remaining life. Eventually after a few more charges it averages at 15-17 hours remaining battery life. That is a big worrying decrease. These figures are always noted after a 100% charge and leaving it to settle for a bit.
So I started thinking what could be causing this decreasing stand by time?
Two theories:
1. It must be an app as I got excellent stand by time from a hard reset and with no additional apps so maybe a particular app is playing with the battery meter?
2. Could it be leaving the phone over night plugged in is doing something to the battery? Maybe I should unplug it as soon as it gets to 100%?
The strange thing is it can't be the actually battery degrading over time as the phone is new. Also, I have recently flashed a custom ROM to my Radar at a point when stand by time was at 15 hours at 100% and after the flashed ROM the standby time went back up to 1 day and 15 hours. Something is not right. It must be an app.
Any other thoughts/theories or anyone else in a similar situation?
Discuss please so we can all learn something to hopefully solve this problem for other handsets too!
My guess: calibration. The system estimates your runtime based on previous runtimes, that's why it's getting lower. Did your phone actually ever run that long, btw?

and does it now actually run out faster? I have noticed this on my ipod. It used to tell me 1h battery remaining and it would run for another 3h until i got home and another 2h the next day (when I noticed I forgot to charge). Also, are you using your phone more now? The biggest battery drain is the display.
Remaining battery life is estimated as follows:
Immediately after being removed from the charger is based on previous usage charging.
After this time estimate is based on current consumption.
In the first week after hard reset or install ROM the period are recorded in the system.
After a year of use of personal phone (HD7) and trying different rom and different settings for gps, 3g, edge, and light i found that the consumer eating large battery . After a more detailed study will say that is the main consumer.
Thanks for your comment Ovi but this is not about how the consumer is wasting the battery by usage. The question I raised was about how the standby time varied at 100% after a hard reset and after weeks of usage at 100%. The stand by time decreased without using the phone after a full charge. That is what is puzzling me. In theory it should be the same stand by time no matter how long the phone has been owned and the rate of discharge is due to usage - agreed.
Hello, a couple of months ago my battery started dying on me so I went to Samsung to get a replacement (my tablet is still within warranty). Despite the fact that my Knox counter is triggered they've changed my battery as well as my tablet's motherboard (don't know why). In the first few weeks I would get quite good battery 7-8 hours of Screen on Time, so far so good.
In the last month or so -though- I'm starting getting quite worse results. The battery leak while sleeping is 2% every 8 hours, so I'm great there too (amplify + greenify work miracles), so the only thing that I can think is that the battery has started dying again (already?). I've let my tablet reach 0% and shut down on its own. Then I booted into recovery and let my tablet on with full brightness for another hour until it was finally off. That's *one hour on* with full brightness!
It seems obvious to me that that's a calibration issue. I deep cycled my battery (twice!), but the results persist (battery is 0% after 5.30 hours of SoT, an additional hour of full brightness is needed until my battery is really depleted). I've made the calculations and found out that if I could actually use that extra hour of full brightness, I would still get 7-8 hours of SoT.
What happened? Why is my battery suddenly got itself "decalibrated" and why does deep cycling (or deleting the battery starts) never works? I think that I should get my tablet back to Samsung again (it's still within warranty), but I would prefer not to as it'll take another 2-3 weeks (again!) to fix it and I'd much prefer to have my tablet in the meantime. So do you have any quick and dirty method to get my 2 hours back?
BTW I know that 2 hours less of screen time , sounds little. But it's exactly the amount of time that deems whether I should charge my battery twice or once every day (yeah I use my tablet *that* much, as it also doubles as my laptop on the go)
